| You don't need to do any math or checking about. Just check the range ruler against a regular pitch to check the number of squares it needs to cover. If you enlarge the squares, just enlarge the ruler so that it covers the same number of squares. I think (Off top of head) that for a straight pass, once the hole is on the player, a QP is within 3sq, a SP within another 4sq, a lPL within another 3sq and a LB within a further 3sq. |

I'm scratch building a decent one this weekend. I normally use paper battle grids (because they're easily portable and simple) but I'll be making a nice one for my league. I'll have to upload some pics somewhere once I finish. I'm using plywood as a base and priming it to make it smooth. On top, I'll layer model train grass/sand for the pitch, and cut some foam to make benches and barriers. Those will of course, also be painted and finished.
EDIT: As far as scale goes, I'm just gridding it in 1 inch by 1 inch squares. Seems to work well with most miniatures, and I built my range ruler and other templates with it. |

Our league is trying to build several pitches for publicity - getting more players attracted to the game, and such...

The 2e styrofoam pitch was 1" squares. Looked great, but it really was too small. While the bases are 25mm, all the figures overhang them. When you get a scrum of players all together, there's really not enough room. And back in 2e, Big Guys took up 4 squares (and counted as 2 players on the field and on your roster -- all of which I thought worked great!). But now that Big Guys only take 1 square, they would pretty well fill up (9) 1" squares 
29, 30, or even 40mm squares work best since Big Guys have shrunk to occupying 1 square.
I've got a couple of the styrofoam astrogranite pitches, nicely painted up, that don't really work any more  . Someday, I hope to get enough interest from local players to run a Stunty League that would use these, and go back to a league rule that Big Guys take up 4 squares for this.

I just picked up some pink foam and am starting my first stadium today.
i am planning on 30mm squares. any oppinions on the subject are welcome

On the Specialist Games Blood Bowl site, there is a reference sheet for passing that includes a grid that clearly marks how many squares there are in each range band. With this tool you never have to have an argument about the passing range ever again. A great tool for the custom pitch maker.
