I edited the first post of the other thread, which in turn destroys your poll.

I don't think there was a clear 3rd place squad at the time of my mistake (several had 2 votes), so I added Norse in to give them a fair shot (they had 3 and were excluded initially).

If you think we should approach this differently feel free to speak up. Very Happy

If there are two teams, then I guess we could use the 2nd place vote recipient as a starting point and then go from there. It's probably worth validating the choice at that time though.

One quick question...

Are we going to attempt to get a few free minis to hand out like the last team or are we going to wind up having everyone supply their own? Since finances are tight for me atm... that may have a huge to do with what I can contribute. Either way I do intend to do my part with this team!

I intend to ask Fanatic again, but can't speak for them. Our back-up plan is for the NAF to finance a box of minis, which looks likely to be approved (request has already been made).

Another question for the crowd-
Should we be able to use non-GW figures or not?

I think it's probably ok to use a few competitor's mini's. As most of them will be GW figures, there should be enough to field a 11-12 man squad if you go to a tourney with just GW figs.

maybe purple/orange/gold?

What about purple and blue? So you have the purple from Minnesota Vikings and the blue for the "icy land" they come from Smile

The other thing I would like to to see in a Norse "well painted" team is the "white-snow"base Very Happy

I saw here in Italy a Norse team well painted with all the bases white painted, as to show the snow and the ice of Norsca.. and they were absolutely marvellous... in fact the team was called "Ice Breakers" Wink

There are a number of ways to simulate snow. Everything from a Woodland Scenics shaker bottle of snow, which can be obtained at a model railroad shop to baking soda from your kitchen cabinet. Look to Indigo's Christmas goblin for inspiration in that department. So the idea of snow effect bases easy enough to achieve.
As for colours, I wouldn't mind seeing a bit of white, brown or grey in there for any 'fur' sections. The thought of hot pink fur (we all have bottles of tentacle pink now, don't we... Very Happy ) leaves me a bit nauseous. Otherwise, most any colour combination works for me.

I was thinking, what with the Olde Weirde's Incanabulum article in the last White Dwarf could we base the team off one of the Northern tribes? Maybe even one of the Orient inspired Cathay tribes or something? If anyone knows more about these tribes than is published in the article we could get colours from there, otherwise purple and white or purple and gold sounds interesting to me.

I also like the colours of the Phoenix Coyotes (Off white and Maroon) and the Minnesota Wild (Forest Green and Red) in the Ice Hockey.

Otherwise, other hockey teams with appropriate names are: Chicago Wolves (Black and Grey), Pensacola (Ice Blue and a dark Turquoise), Adirondack (Blended red to Orange with White), Indianapolis (Purple and White). Please excuse the Ice Hockey fascination, yes I know I have a problem. Also there are teams like the Minnesota Timberwolves (Green and Black from memory) that we could look at.

Living in Minnesota, but being a Packers Fan....I must say GOLD is a must. As for the other color options: I think any of the following three would make sense and is pleasing to the eye: DARK BLUE (like royal blue), PURPLE (like the Lakers {remember where they originated!!} or Vikings (tough one for me, but I can suffer), or RED (like velvet).

I have to agree with Torpor the furry parts should be BROWNISH/GREY...please no pink...I like Jesse Ventura, but not his boa!

And for the bases, I thought the ice-theme is a given....makes it very easy for me right now to visualize it, with -21F/-29C outside temperature with wind chill:-41F,C!!!!

I just compared the size of the small, clear flight base to a standard black slotta. It is a bit too large (3cm vs. 2cm diameter), but not beyond the realm of a simple grinding job, if you want to give a player the 'skating on ice' look. Either that or have one of the coaches ice fishing. Laughing Plenty of time to experiment though.

-Torpor

(The large, clear flight base is worse proportionately to the big guy circular base --8cm vs. 4cm, but as I said before - a coach in a small hut ice fishing or having a team sauna for a dugout, it might work)

Maybe this is a bit out there, but what about putting them in Tartan? I think that could make the team even more unique, because doing a tartan pattern on 20ish mini's would take forever, but just doing 1 wouldn't take long at all, and would really make them stick out...

As far as colors, I like the yellow idea, but not the purple, as these guys aren't going to be wearing much, I would think you'd want it to be a fairly bright color, so it sticks out more... maybe yellow with red accents?

maybe?

What about just varying shades of blue..dark to light to add to the icy look/feel?

Did a quick google search too:
http://www.cs.vassar.edu/~capriest/vikdyes.html

Excerpt:
"The chemical evidence of textiles from several different sites seems to point to a preponderance of particular colors appearing in particular areas: reds in the Danelaw, purples in Ireland, and blues and greens in Scandinavia proper (Walton 1988, 1Cool. This seeming preference could of course be explained by any number of variables--availability of dyestuffs, the differing site climates, or the sheer vagaries of archaeological discovery. However, although it is carefully hedged, there is a hypothesis in the scientific world that this might possibly reflect regional color preferences rather than archaeochemical factors. It is pleasant to think that this sort of "Viking heraldry" might have been practiced."

Most colors are fine, i would not go for gold, however. Every true Norse player would rather drown in beer (bought with the gold buttons) than wear any gold ...

I'm just finishing a Norse team in classic white / strong blue (enchanted-> lighting) / metal and it looks really ... well ... Northern. I did experiment with gold on the belts and it just looked wrong, so i dropped it.

Most important imo is that you don't do the helmets in metal (like the GW minis on the old box) but in a flat color with some helmet design to make them look more footballish (the horns don't help much here).

EDITED as Tim posted while I was typing:

Well, if we want to work towards a July 31st deadline we have plenty of time. We do have to work out a few things before we can really get started though (color/colour scheme being one of them).

So far I have seen:
Off White / Maroon
Black / Grey
Ice Blue / Dark Turquois
Red to Orange / White
Purple / Gold
Purple / White
Dark Blue / Gold
Purple / Orange / Gold
Red / Gold
Light Green / Red
Tartan (cringe)
Varying Shades of Blue / Bronze
white / strong blue (enchanted-> lighting) / metal

We also need to nail down rules about participating/trading the team, and find out about the mini's themselves. After we have all that, folks can make an informed choice about participating.

Uniform bases sound great to me, but we brought this up last time and some felt that too many rules could take away from the fun.

Any other color combos?

I would like to see the NAF logo somewhere on the figures (a tattoo?), even the bases would be fine in my book, just to emphasize that this is a NAF project. As far as colours of the team, I agree that something other than red/black/white would be preferable. I don't think that you are being thick to suggest the colour scheme and I do believe that it should be one of the options that people could vote for, though I would not vote for it.

As for Phil's Valkyrie phigs - they are great models and if you would like to include one for the team go for it. Just post which one that you are doing so that others do not repeat the same miniature (phigure?).

Frozen Tundra is a very good theme for this team....of course we don't have to use exactly what the website shows, but somewhere along these lines should be ok

As an idea for discussion: Somebody suggested to keep the ring of the base in the same color...why not use all 3 NAF colors....have vertical stripes and change the colors every 30 degrees (zebra look)...trying to keep the order of the colors the same for all minis.

And just in case anyone did want to vote for the tartan... *Shudder*

http://www.mordor.ch/swichert/miniatures/tutorial_tartan.html

I think the standard Norse model wouldn't have a large enough area of clothing to paint a tartan on it without it looking a bit weird. A plain colour that's shaded and highlighted would look better on smaller areas of clothing.

As for the colour of the base edge - why not leave them as an icy colour such as Space Wolf Grey as shown here :

http://us.games-workshop.com/download/IG_popup.htm?/games/40k/imperialguard/painting/troopcamo/images/large/ice2.jpg

That would leave the front area of the base clear to paint the team number of the figure - not all the Norse models have shoulder pads that can take a number.

Of course, if we were to go for the NAF colours, we should paint the top half of the base edge red and the bottom half in black and white stripes. I guess it wouldn't be too hard to paint... White undercoat on the edge, paint the red top half with a steady hand, then add the black stripes...

Don't worry - I'll be quiet now Smile

The area around the bases should be the same. We can designate what color later.
As for the photoshop patch idea, I've tried it and it's real tricky to get working right. The ink may run or your print unclear... My biggest problem was the best paper to print on was too thick to conform to the areas I was planning to set the patches correctly. Just make sure to test it before attempting on a fully painted model. One mistake may lead you to starting over on the whole model itself!

I think the frozen tundra from HowlingGriffon's link, with the Space Wolf grey ring would look sharp.
