Painting - Primer preferance

Post subject: Primer preferance
Let me start off that I've viewed most of the posts with painted figs and WOW! They are epic! I've been painting with my own style for 5+ years that is somewhat boring and finally caved in and started to check out some painting tip sites. I've learned alot and think my figs are looking better. I know primer depends on the team/army but over all what color do you use?

Also, what type of finish do most of you use? I usually use 2 coats of a gloss or matte.

I usually stay away from varnish like the plague (Sorry Squig, no offense to Papa Nurg) but now that my figs are getting (man)handled alot, looks like I may have to cave in.

i go back and forth between black and white primer.
i seal with 2 coats of wal-mart $.94 gloss clear coat, then one coat of citadel matte to knock the shine down. i'm about to try a little brushed on varnish for armour pieces though to see how it looks.

Depends entirely on the colour scheme. Anything bright (like most BB figs) I'll use white, but I've used black on stuff like Chaos and Chaos Dwarf, and I'll tend to use black on most LOTR figs (but obviously not for Saruman for example).
Should be an option for 'Depends' so I haven't voted.

And I use GW matt varnish. Several light coats with plenty of drying time in between work better for me than one or two heavier coats.

Black for all basecoats, and GW matte spray and Folkart Outdoors Matte varnish as varnishes, if I use varnish at all that is.

White for bright colors and models with lots of skin (High Elf, Norse, Humans, Ogres, Shadowforges, etc.) , black for dark models and Greenskins (Chaos, Chaos Dwarf, Orcs, Goblins).

I always use black now. used to use white but the spray doesn't seem to cover as well as the black, it tends to pool in the crevices no matter how lightly I spray it

My preference is black. It's definatly a lot easier to work with in my opinion. You can get away with being more sloppy and it actually looks good. As for white, if it's not perfect, the mistakes tend to stand out a lot more. I also like my mins looking darker as oppose to brighter, but that's just my preference.

I almost always use black, but I prefer a darker look anyway.

Thanks for the input. Seems like an even split for white or black. I've always used white but will try some black on my Gobo team to see the difference. Didn't even know primer could affect the outcome. I thought it was to just help the paint adhere to the modle.

And try getting a moody, dark result over a white undercoat Wink

I voted Black, but i currently use a grey primer, which I bought in an art store. It's doing a great job for 75 % of the price.

Actually if you want to paint yellow over black, use Leprous Brown first. It's a nice shade for yellow too.

I like to use grey myself for all my priming. It's a good middle ground.

I was always using black but when I started painting pro-elves and a norse team ( 4 a friend of mine, totally Fryslan boppe !!! ) It didn't seem like a good plan using black so I spreyed them white and it suits me just fine.

It really depends on what I what to achieve. Brighter colours get a white primer, and darker colours get a black primer. Mostly, though, it's black, as I tend to want darker, smother colours, and I get that with black.
