Rules Questions - Freebooters

Had a question come up the other day ... Can you hire "specialist" freebooters even if your team is maxed on the specialists?

For example, a Human Team wants to hire a freebooter for their next game. If they already have four Blitzers, can they freeboot a fifth blitzer?

No. Only players you "could normally have on your team". You can't normally have a 5 blitzers.

But you can normally have Blitzers -- And http://www.bloodbowl.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=1165&highlight=freebooter that old thread never confirms one way or another ... at least one person says you can, and at least one other says you can't ... (Sorry about the long URL ... I haven't figgered out how to fix that, yet ...)

You can. I'll look up the rule and post it.

You can't, unless they're star players. Star players don't count towards position limits because they no longer have a position. Normal positional players do, even when freebooted. So the only way to have 3 wardancers on your team is to hire Jordell.

LRB 2.0 pp42

A coach is only allowed to hire Freebooter players that would normally play for his team

I'll concede that this isn't as clear as I would like, maybe something that needs a clarification?

Just to split hairs, that quoted snatch of LRB text refers only to what list a team can hire from. Using the same example as the LRB that sentence basically means that a Human team can only freeboot players from the Human team roster.

Having said that I do agree that you cannot exceed the limits, i.e. you may not have a fifth blitzer on your Human team. Hiring a freebooter is exactly like hiring a normal player with 2 differences. The player costs half as much and leaves the team after one game. I see nothing that even implies that you can exceed the limits imposed by the team roster.

Nothing implies you shouldn't either.

Well, I think that's wrong. You're hiring a new player, a temporary one admittedly, but a still a new player from your own team's roster. So I think that at the very least implies that you would treat it just like buying players (LRB p17) where it explicitly says you may not exceed the maximums.

you can freeboot a big guy and they don't appear on the team rosters.

whatever - it's probable that you shouldn't be able to get >4 blitzers but it needs stating explicitly.

Not true. Human teams can hire rookie ogres even though they're not on their team roster. They can also hire the vampire star player who's neither human nor on their roster.

Yeah, but you can permanently hire big guys as well, as long as you don't have more than one. Mordredd is right, the same rules apply unless otherwise stated, and it's not stated otherwise.

Same rules apply. Why write two sentences when one does the job?

No, it is true.

Star players are covered in the paragraph after and in the star players section on p18. Just because you have to freeboot star players in a league does not make them freebooters (just a bit of semantics Wink ).

Serious question now. Can you freeboot Big Guys? Has this been Q&A'd? I can't remember, but they're not mentioned in the freebooters text so going purely on what's said in the LRB I would have said that you can't.
