North America - Beantown Brouhaha II (Boston, MA - 06/25-06/26)

Melifaxis - Jan 24, 2005 - 12:32 PM
Post subject: Beantown Brouhaha II (Boston, MA - 06/25-06/26)
The second annual Beantown Brouhaha will take place on June 25th and 26th. Over the next two weeks I'll update the webpage to reflect this year's complete rules and information.

Last year, gken1's Desert Kings claimed The Hand of Roze-El. Will your team be the one to claim it from his wicked grasp?

I was planning to include a round of Street Bowl at the Brouhaha this year, but have decided not to based on feedback from registered coaches. I may run a separate one-day StreetBowl tourney later in the year.

In the meantime, if you have any questions feel free to contact me directly or post here.

If a moderator reads this, please make this thread sticky and if you can.

Thanks,
Rob

June. Excellent. That should be just far enough away to make it possoble. I was afraid you were going to hold the event in April and then I'd be out of luck. The Scarlet mist will try to be there. This year we're not settling for second place King

Rob - dumb quick question regarding Dauntless. Are you going to use the current ruling (2d6 > opponent's Strength) or the proposed ruling (1d6 + your Strength > opponent's Strength)?

Believe it or not, I'm toying with the idea of giving one or two of my gutter runners Dauntless to start the tourney.
Hoshi_Komi - Mar 29, 2005 - 08:58 PM

dauntless is still a doubles roll.
Opus - Mar 30, 2005 - 08:45 AM
Post subject:
GKent - you are correct. As it is written now, it's 2d6. But there is a proposed rule change, which would cause the roll to be 1d6 + the player's strength. Hence my question to Rob. Smile

Post subject:
Ok, I'm back online at work but not at home yet... Sad

Dauntless is a trait, so you could not give it to anyone to start with. You could elect to do so as your only advancement after round 3 though (on a player that has no yet been given a skill) as it would require a doubles roll.

It will be 2d6 though.

But just to clarify, that would only be for coaches who cannot play on both days - it would not be imposed on all coaches. I mean that would suck to come all that way only to be able to play for one day.

Mel,

Just reading the rulebook for the tourney, and was a bit confused for a while there. For skill advancement it says that the coach gets two skills before the tourney and after rounds one, two and four. At first I thought that they got two skills after every game - but the bottom part which tells the number of skills in total makes it clearer. You might want to throw a line in there which clarifies that there is only one skill given after rounds one, two and four.

But reading the rulebook is getting me hyped! More sure than ever that I want to be there!

Thanks Spazz, I just clarified that little point in the rules.

Last year, one of the guys was having a hard time with being away two days and having a brand new son at home, so when he asked me Saturday night I told him he could step out and I would cover the last two games as I was the odd man out. He had a shot at a high finish as he was 1/2/0 (W/T/L) at the time, but I only won one of the two remaining games.

This year, he and another guy both can only make one day each (luckily opposite days) and are trying to pre-plan it. I just wanted to run it by folks before going with my gut answer of yes. I do see the reasoning on the ineligible for top prizes and I think they'll be ok with that. I would still leave them eligible for best painted and best conversion (although to be honest unless they pull something out of their ass and WOW me, they aren't going to be contending with the likes of Bampf, Grasshopper, and Zinak) Very Happy

There is a chance I'll be there also, so here is my two cents on the issue...

I think it'd be fine to let people play one day and then let a new coach take their slot on day two. The NAF rankings will only be impacted by the games that they play so it's no real bother to any of the other participants.

Regarding winning an award...I don't think that anyone who does not play the entire tournement should be eligable for ANY awards. Even best painted...lets reward someone who is prepared to travel and participate in the entire tourney. If someone has a bad tourney and a nicely painted team shouldn't they be rewarded for sticking it out? No offense to the folks who can't make it for both days, but I don't think that they should be able to walk away from a the tourney with a prize when somone else has a nicely painted team, can play the whole tourney, and walk away empty handed.

And just for another way of looking at it...how about if someone plays Ogres on day one and has 18 casualties and can't make it for day two. If 18 casualties is the leader spot...why shouldn't that earn them a trophy?

Again...just my $.02

Good point Rob, and I hope you can make the trip. It would be easy enough to look at their total casualties and total touchdowns by day so they could grab those honors if they actually had some freakish luck. I think best painted and best conversion are a moot point anyways with these two so I have no problem ruling that either way.

I think it's just fine to have two coaches who split running the same team over two days. The problem with awards (like most TDs) would be deciding which one of the coaches was to get the award (since they're not playing the same number of games). Other than that, I think they should be eligible to win any award. But that's just me.

And you can count me *out* for Best Painted Team. I bought the team already painted. Smile

I think Rob made a good point. If one of the coaches, in just the games that he plays, manages to score the most TDs or cause the most casualties I would think he deserves the award.

Does anyone object to Gken1's Chaos rules for mutations in the Death Cup? I am loathe to change the rules at this point, but if no one is against it then we could add that in for this year as well.

Melifaxis - Jun 27, 2005 - 07:55 AM

Hmm...geocities site has already exceeded it's capacity today Rolling Eyes

Champion - Melifaxis' Necromantic (Some Kinda Voodoo)
2nd Place - SBG's Chaos Dwarves (Schwartzwald Beer Gutters)
3rd Place - Raphael's Dwarves (Peace in Varsovia)
Most TD's - Bampf's Elves (Rivendale River Raiders)
Most Casualties - Robert Daniel's Dwarves (Dwarven Kings)
Best Painted - Bampf's Elves (Rivendale River Raiders) just edged out Zinak's Skaven (Skaven Scurvey)
Wooden Spoon - Garth's Humans (Buffalo Jills aka The Dirty Dozen)
Best NAF Rookie - Shane Yeager's Dark Elves (Moggra Corsairs)

Opening Round versus Opus (Mark Oliver) and his skaven squad, The Mouseketeers - Ogun once again took to the pitch and the spirit of this match was akin to the much coveted battle for the wooden spoon at The Rhody Rampage. It was a role-playing heavy battle where the skaven gave better than they got, winning the casualty war. But, some risky play along the sidelines sent several rats into the loving arms of their fans who refused to harm them. Still, I was able to capitalize on a numbers advantage on the pitch and score twice.
Final Score 2-0 (1-2 CAS)

Round Two versus Zinak (Kent Nelson) and his skaven squad, Skaven Scurvy ??? Victory can be attributed to one thing really, breaking his Rat Ogre???s chain. It must have been very intimidating, which is why Brian later broke an arm of one of my werewolves in the final Wink Ok, so aside from feeling like an ass for damaging his beautifully painted team, this was one of those games that wasn???t a ton of fun as the dice were so lopsided. I broke armor constantly and every time Zinak tried to handle the ball it would squirt loose and land near a werewolf or wight. Kent was very gracious despite his ill luck and I look forward to a more evenly rolled match.
Final Score: 4-1 (2-0 CAS)

Round Three versus CyberHare (Brian St. James) and his amazon squad, The Scarlet Mist ??? This was about as tense as a game can get. One mistake on either side could have turned this into a win for either coach. I???ve been looking forward to playing Brian for some time and was glad to see not all of his ???zons were blodgers yet. The werewolves were effective, but it was Papa Legba that sent two ???zons out of the game. Without those casualties I wouldn???t have been able to stop the flood of amazons from scoring at the end of the match. Luckily the defense held.
Final Score 1-1 (2-0 CAS)

Round Four versus Bampf (Jeremy Smith) and his elf squad, The Rivendale River Raiders ??? I was nervous all night thinking about this match. I pulled out my first foul of the tourney early and got rid of his only blitzer without being ejected, and it was really the key play that made the difference. There were so many spots where side step could have been enough to break my defense. Instead, Jeremy had to dodge and his dice were nothing but CRUEL to him. At one point he had five ones in a row. Without the luck factor I would have lost this game. I fully expect Jeremy to join the NBA after this one???The elves tied up the casualties as time expired.
Final Score: 3-2 (2-2)

Championship Match versus CyberHare (Brian St. James) and his amazon squad...again!! Scarlet Mist twice in one tourney....cruelty! I laugh at myself for thinking the first game was tense. All match long I felt like I was playing down men even though my wolves inflicted an early casualty. The blodging zons were everywhere! We both scored fairly early, but it was Brian controling play in the second half. It looked like I had managed to hold him off and we'd be headed to overtime when one of those legendary touchdowns landed in my lap. Ogun blitzed! He crushed a zon to death freeing up the ball for Damballah-Wedo. He grabbed it and ran foward GFI'ing twice for a desparate handoff. Despite having only one arm (Brian accidentally knocked one off) Bako grabbed the ball in his teeth, dodged, and charged forward spiking it into the endzone!
Final Score: 2-1 (2-0)

Thank God he said "final" Wink

I almost had a wooden spoon at DB I (1-0-4), but VBZ and his humans took the honors after our match-up. I think he ended up doing better than me in the Deathbowl round if I recall though. It just wasn't quite enough to make me take home the spoon.

I almost had the wooden spoon at the Rhody Rampage too. Opus and I battled it out at the bottom table and Ogun (Flesh Golem Extraordinaire) came through with the game-winning TD to stave off spoondom once again. That was a riot of a game.

TORONTO -- The NHL and the players' association wrapped up five days of labor negotiations Friday, slowly moving toward an agreement that will end the lockout.

Talks are scheduled to resume Monday in New York.

"It was a very long week but I think both sides are working really hard to resolve and move the process forward," Bill Daly, the NHL's chief legal officer, said Friday before boarding a plane for New York.

"We continued to make progress this week but there are still some issues that we need to talk about," he added. "We've made significant progress on most of the critical areas but that's all contingent on everything being resolved."

Daly would not say when he thought a deal could finally be done.

"There's a real sense of urgency of tying to get this behind us," Daly said.

The league and union met for about 15 hours a day this week.

"The two parties engaged in lengthy negotiations every day this week, and while progress has been made in a number of areas, there remains a considerable amount of work to be completed in order to reach an agreement," NHLPA senior director Ted Saskin said in a statement.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman canceled the hockey season Feb. 16 because of the lockout, which started Sept. 16.

The last thing I heard was that the owners want the players to put 25% of their salary for the year in trust... if the league makes less money they they expected, the players are to give money back... that is the linkage..

DO YOU BELIVE THAT??? Would you take a job and if the company did not make ENOUGH money give some back??? If I did a good job.. no way!!! not on your life.. If the following year they said.. you suck.. well offer you this.. ok.. but to hold some of the money earned and then ask for it back????

I would not accept it.... The players are being REAMED UP THE CHuTE... what do they have to loose at this point.. I would stay out. Or on mass go to Europe.. As it is... the new rookie cap they are looking at might see players like Sidney Crosby go to Europe for the first few years... more money than NHL... no longer the primere league it once was.

The players just need to realise that the Gravy Train is gone and that the days of milking the owners is over.

1. Would we be expected to give back money if the company was losing money? NO...but we could instead lose our jobs outright. In leiu of that maybe the players should be vested in the profitability of the company. Maybe those players that dog it in the third period might be more inclined to play hard all the time.

Also, look at how this has effected other people who have(had) Hockey-related jobs...they just got axed. Do you think some of them might have preffered to keep their jobs with just some of their salary being linked to the performace of the company?

or...

2. Give the owners the ability to fire players with no financial liability after the severance packages of course.

It might sound inane, but short of this...the comparison of what you and I would experience in the workforce is not relevant to the conversation. Compare apples to apples.

what are you talking about?!?! Rolling Eyes

That wasn't at all the comparison - the growth of a sport has inevitably found those initial teams struggling to maintain their dominance or excellence, and there is an accompanying cry, usually a minority of players and/or fans, who bemoan the 'good old days', esp. as the modern draft, free agency, and spending caps work in the name of 'parity'...

Jackie Robinson?!?! must be one of those six degree things.... Wink

All I'm saying is that the Lightning Winning the Stanley Cup should not necessarily be considered an evolution of the game...

Actually they are not even the most Southern Team to have won it...just the most recent. (See Dallas Stars)

-RobO
P.S. On a side note...re your reference to the changing environment of the NHL. At the risk of sounding "old establishment", I hope that all of these rules to increase scoring and draw fans doesn't water-down the game too much. All that will do is alienate the core of fans that love the game the way it is(or was)...the NHL will never compete with the Big 3, so hopefully Bettman and Co. don't prostitute the game too much to woo the fans that will never come. (And this is coming from someone who loves Hockey.)
