I need to confirm with Jay, but I think the last time we talked we were looking at having it in April again.

As long as we have the attention of the Philly Pholk --
Philcon is a SF convention with gaming. It may be a good place to get some BB going. Its probably too late to organise a tourney this year, but some of you may want to check out the con and maybe add some pick-up games to the game room.

I believe that Jay had a tourney there a few years back, but did not get much of a Blood Bowl crowd there.

It may be re-visiting though.

Thanks. -Rob

You're not likely to draw tourney goers from the usual crowd at a con like that, but they have a nice venue if you can bring your own folks in. There's also perks to working with these cons once you get to know how the organisation works. Some cons have comp policies that might allow tourney organiser(s) free admission, its always worth asking.

I'm still sorting things out with Arisia, but we hope to get funding from the con to pay for a really spiffy legacy trophy. Scott Lefton, a local artist who regularly shows his stuff at Arisia and who made the Hugo awards for the 2004 World Con in Boston has agreed to design and make the trophy for us Very Happy http://www.scottlefton.com/hugo-fs.htm

And partly due to the fact that so many dealers attend the con, we're lining up some good prize support. We'll have details on the ArisiaBowl site as soon as they're fully confirmed.

For luring other gamers at the con into trying BB, some open games might be good, especially if you have some of your regulars who are already playing -- that way people can see the game in action and get tempted. 7s games might be good for teaching games cause of the shorter time commitment with all the other activities at the con.

If you can get something going there next year, I'd try to squeeze it into my schedule. I know a lot of Arisia folks who go to Philcon, so I should be able to arrange some carpooling and share a room if it doesn't otherwise conflict with my class schedule.

Cheers,
Maureen

You make alot of interesting points that I had not considered...we'll defiantely have to take another look. Even if its for next year to get more Skaven players at the Phrakus. Smile

I am going to run a small tournament at Phil Con this year.

With the guys in the area we should be able to get a decent turnout. Can't be worse than the last time with the 2 people I had (not including me). Smile

well if it's not snowing I'd be interested Smile

Yeah. The snow storm we had last time didn't help much. I think at least 4 guys didn't come because of that.

I'd love to have you again. It will probably be only 1 day though. The gaming area isn't that big here so they only want to give me 1 day. You could crash at my place for too. (With the wife's OK of course Smile)

I was planning on just 3 rounds but I might be able to squeeze 4 in. Is that too much for 1 day?

one day actually fits my schedule better....definitely prefer saturday leaving Sunday for Football watching Smile

Plus with the way the wife is acting lately, I might be able to talk her into a day Smile

depends on how many people show up. if over 10, I think 4 games would be better, if less than 10, 3 should be good Smile

get Val working on making a cool trophy!! Smile

also with this much notice I think 4 guys from my league would be doable. Put out the bat signal to the Harrisburg Mafia....

Too bad the budget is pretty tight right now, or I'd head down this time. Arisia has trouble with snow every 5 years or so too.

OK. I've got some communication going with the Philcon people.

I did find out one thing that could put a hurting on things.

The 1-day entry cost for Saturday is $35. Now there wont be an extra cost for the tournament, but $35 would be a bit steep.

I'm trying to see if I can get a discount but probably wont be able to get it lower than $20 (the entry fee for the other 2 days).

Would the $35 or $20 turn you away? It wouldn't include food or anything else.

It would be fairly unusual if they didn't have a Con Suite with free snacks and drinks for attendees.

I'll have to look into that. I've only been to the Con once and didn't do a lot of looking around.

There's also a lot of *unofficial* parties throughout the evenings at cons like this (and Arisia!). The con is not allowed to serve alcohol. However, private parties at the hotel, open by invitation, may Very Happy So there is a strong tradition of other cons sending party-squads to boost their events. Also crews that are putting in bids to run World-Con will be hosting parties to show off their organising prowess in the hopes of winning votes. Usually these parties will have people handing out invitations to other con-goers all day long. Depending on the quality of the parties, there will be a range of snacks and drinks available, and the better ones will have alcohol and some substantial food. If you find one serving Rocket-Fuel, you've scored.

If you're going to be gaming all day -- be sure to talk with folks who are tied in with the con, like whoever is coordinating the game room -- so they can round up invitors to go to the game room and hand out invites!

For instance, I'm in the middle of negotiating with Arisia over funding for a really spiffy legacy trophy for the ArisiaBowl. Not only will I take this on the road to display at other BB tournies, but it will get sent with Arisia parties to other cons. So if all goes well, it will be at the Arisia party at Philcon next year!

And if you show up at the door of a party with your con badge, you can probably quickly acquire an invitation Wink

Cheers,
Maureen

We got the signal. Mongo is planning on coming, and I should be able to be there too. We're rounding up the troops to see who else we can bring. I'm also putting word out to my guys around Reading. One day tourney should be good for many people's schedules.

Yay! Also be sure to check on registration costs & deadlines for next year. The earlier you join, the cheaper the rates, and they'll likely be selling memberships for next year at the con. I think Philcon also does group discounts... so with advance planning you might be able to herd folks into signing up as the Bloodbowl Group.

I didn't get the ArisiaBowl organised early enough this year for the really cheap early bird rates either, but we'll be all set to hit the ground running next year.

Cheers,
Maureen

If Jay can get us in for $20, that would be excellent. I know some guys are planning on attending. Let us know what the entry will be so that we can prepare everyone ahead of time.

Doesn't look like I'll have any luck getting a discount. No one seems to want to help. The only thing I've got is that if you are under 25 years old you can get in for $25.

I'll keep plugging. I haven't heard from the Game organizer in a while.

I still need to find out if I can do the 4 rounds that I want.

If I had 4 rounds, would that turn anyone off? It would give you more for your money.

What time would the first round be starting?
jaylazer - Nov 30, 2005 - 12:08 PM
Post subject:
About 1/2 hour after the con opens (not sure when that is though).

That'll make it hard for you unless you can get off from work that day.

I'm also looking into a group rate. I would need at least 10 people to get that rate.

Who would be interested if I can get the rate? Not sure yet if it's even possible at this point.

Just put up a posting for the tournament in it's own thread.

If you are planning on coming please respond there and give me an email. I want to get a good count for it.

I think I can get a group rate if we can get 10 people but I'll need to know ASAP.
