North America - GenCon Bowl 2006 - August 11 and 12

Post subject: GenCon Bowl 2006 - August 11 and 12
So far the GenCon Bowl has been the largest tournament in North America 3 years running. The GenCon convention is also the largest gaming convention in North America.

Come out and see them both.

5 rounds of swiss style play ... lots of prizes and a free mini for everyone finishing the tournament.

All rules for the event at:
http://www.blood-bowl.net/GenCon/2006/GenCon2006.html

I strongly recommend pre-registration if you are not going to be visiting the convention on Thursday during the day as the lines in the morning for events can be very long.

Sign up for GenCon at: http://www.gencon.com
The Blood Bowl tournament is Event Type BGM - Board Game and the 2 days are events: BGM00730 and BGM00731.

Finally note ... if the NAF rep could approve the tournament ... much appreciated.

Will there be a cool T-Shirt this year? I will probably not be able to make it this year, but would like to get a T-Shirt if possible.

No T-shirts ... sorry ... this year has been so insane for me with everything I'm trying to do that the T-shirt died on the altar of ... "I just don't have any good way to do this".

Also the guy who did the shirts (my father-in-law) ... well I'm not sure he was interested in doing them again this year.

Also ... I came home with a lot of those shirts last year and I'm trying to be a bit more reasonable with my spending cash these days ...

so the shirts actually went for a few reasons.

Sorry.

I've a few questions for any of the locals in Indianapolis.

Has anyone been to the Easley Winery?
http://www.easleywine.com/

What are the local laws about the selling and purchasing of wine or spirits? Are there specific stores one must visit to purchase wine or is it non regulated? Does anyone know of a good wine/spirits store in the area of the convention centre?

Thanks in advance,

Any liquor store and most pharamacies and grocery stores carry wine and harder spirits.

There are only really two laws. Alcohol cannot be purchased in bottle or can form on Sunday from any location and you cannot have open containers of alcohol in a moving vehicle. Other than that ... you are fine.

Hmmmm Laughing

Pre registration actually ended on the 24th of June. You can still register for events now until the 21st but they won't mail you out the tickets. The Will Call line though is quite a bit shorter than the registration line so it's still worth registering ahead of time.

From the tournament rules:
-------------------------------
The tournament will be 5 rounds of Swiss. Starting team will be 1,000,000. You will allowed your choice of giving 2 players each a normal skill or one player a doubles roll skill or mutation after rounds 1, 3, and 5.
-------------------------------

My question is, what do we do with the skills after round 5? Wink

I'm sure it's correct. The only thing I was having fun with was that there are only 5 rounds... So, the skills you give your guys *after* round 5 will not be incredibly useful.

I've always left that in for fun. But yes ... round 5 is played with 6 skills on the players (less if you took a doubles skill).

Congrats to Jay Deckman for winning the GenCon Bowl 2006 with 45 coaches attending.

Wolfgang came in 2nd place.

Rachel Green won Most Valuable Coach (YES! ... Women can win this game ... I hope her and Grace show up next year as they both are good competitors).

mrinprophet (Chris A.) won Best Sportsmanship

Matt Spanke won Least TDs allowed

Micheal Mullar won Best Painted (he won at the Chaos Cup 2005 as well with a different team ... really impressive paint jobs on both).

Alex Shutte won Most CAS (with Dwarves)

Sean McLane won Most TDs (with Dark Elves)

Wooden Spoon with to Jeff Pfaffman (Ogres)

=======

Side Note of personal pride. My brother Dennis Anders (he won last year's GenCon Bowl) has now played in all 4 GenCon Bowls ... 19 games. He has never lost a game yet (only coach who can say this ... Wolfgang is 2nd with only losing 1 in 19 games). This year he was 3rd in game points after Wolfgang and next in line after Rachel for Most Valuable Coach.

And the biggest laugh to me was he cannot wait for LRB 5.0 not because he cares about the rules (he doesn't pay ANY attention at all to be honest ... every year I have to sit down with him before the tournament and talk him through the newest changes since he only plays Blood Bowl once a year (at GenCon)) ... but he kept coming to me between rounds with complaints ... "why do Mummies have access to Block?" ... "Don't worry Dennis they won't next year" ... "Why can Deeproot and Count Luthor use team re-rolls?" ... "Don't worry Dennis they won't next year" ... "Why is the Master Chef so great? ... "Don't worry Dennis its not next year"

After all of this he asked ... "okay so what did LRB 5.0 do to my team" ... "Your Kroxigor will be a bit more expensive but you have enough Fan Factor to cover it and that's it" ... he says "Cool I'll look forward to next year."

So I got a laugh from that ... in fact ... I got an earful wondering why I didn't use it this year ... Laughing

Jay played Orcs and did not face Wolfgang this year in his 5 games (Wolfgang tied in round 4 so was on table 2 instead of table 1 in the last round). Jay played Frank (the winner of last year's Chaos Cup) in the final round of this year's GenCon.

Wolfgang's one loss so far at GenCon in 4 years came from Dennis Anders last year in the final/5th round when the ball bounced to a Saurus who caught it and ran it in for the tournament winning TD.

Jay played awesome. His strategy was fairly simple: beat the heck out of the other guy. Obviously, it worked.

His roster, as I recall, was something like this: 4 black orcs, 4 blitzers, troll, goblin, thrower, 2 rerolls. His 6 skills were: block on black orcs (x4), tackle on a blitzer, and strip ball on a blitzer.

He beat up my team, and I just didn't have enough players to stop the winning score. I've been finding bruises on my players ever since I got home...

It was a great time at the tournament.

SolarFlare had my roster, skills and strategy pretty much perfectly.

All of my games were a lot of fun. All 5 opponents played their teams really well and save my 3rd round game, they were all hard fought battles. Alex (3rd round coach) played hard but the dice really wanted me to win that game. I think I threw 20 blocks at his saurus and got 18 pows. Most of the time he could only stand them back up.

The whole con was great. Even getting killed many times in "Engarde!".

Thanks to everyone for the great time.

Well, my orcs finished 2 W, 2 T, and 1 L. I was finally able to get ahold of that elusive Austrian Laughing and actually played him to a tie. I will say this, I do believe he's one of the best players I've ever played against. Not only did he have some nice luck, but his tactics were very sound. Then I got to play Dennis (Tom's Bro), and a bit of nice rolls helped him along, and might I say I finally seen a Sauras successfully dodge, nice one there Dennis, as it blind sided me. The game was lost in turn 8 for me with double skullz, trying to knock a skink oobs. He played a terrific game, and I'm sure we will play again. I still have to work on my sportsmanship, as I tend to get mad when Nuffle disses me, nothing to any of my opponents, as I had 5 cool games. I do believe I will try something else next year, I have Norse or a return to my High Elves from year 1 Gen Con ( it was very sad ). If Dennis would like a shot with Orcs next Gen Con I will bring mine for him to use, as he stated he doesn't have any other teams to use, I'm sure I will change, it's just to what.

And finally Tom, thanx again you seem to bring the masses to game. Even females are flocking to your tables, keep up the good work, and I hope to see you in Chaos cup (if I can get vacation), otherwise next year @ GenCon. I noticed a lot of returning players, I hope they continue to return and bring friends.

Thanks for the laurel wreath! The game against you was one of the hardest and best. With a little more luck with your dice or a little bad luck with mine you would have won it! Thanks for the nice game, was a good experience!

Galak, Thank you for gettin' the data done, running the tourney, and in general continuing to support this game. Especially with all the whiny ninnies complaining about posting results...

There has to be something seriously wrong with the NAF algorithm. I checked my ranking for woodies and it had my ranking coming out on top in the US. Now anyone who has ever played Xtreme and played me would laugh at the idea that I'm a better Woodies coach than Bryan. We've faced off once and though it was a great game I was definitely outcoached.

Gotta make it to Zlurpee to see Jen and Bryan and get my rating "adjusted".

Either that or I gotta start playing a real Blood Bowl team. Tom knows why I don't. My Woodies still aren't completely painted and I played him with 'em back at neoliminal's inaugural Underworld Cup. It takes three or four years for me to get a good basecoat on it seems. Yet I get my wood elf uni all in a twist when the results aren't available in a timely manner.

Go figure.
