Post subject: Using Side Step on a secondary Pushback

Okay, need a little assistance with this one...

Playing against Woodies last night. It's my opponent's Turn, the ball is on the ground surrounded by players from both teams. Opponent blocks one of my players - result Pushback. With all possible squares for the result containing players he elects to pushback my player into a square containing his Catcher with Side Step.

The 'pushbacked' Catcher then uses Side Step to move 'forward' into the square with ball, something he could not have done without the skill.

Allowed or not? Confused

We let it stand since a quick perusal of the rules, showed up nothing that did not disallow the move.

LRB, pg. 9, as part of "Picking Up the Ball", has the following:

Players that move into the square with the ball at other times (ie. when pushed back, etc) can't pick up the ball, and instead it will bounce one square.

Have to believe that this rule would have applied in your case, (whether the Sidestep skilled was applied or not) with the "at other times" caveat being the covering rule. Hope the play wasn't too critical to the game.

Here's a second situation. What if the catcher already has the ball and is held in a pocket of opposing players?

endzone

o . o

p = player pushed back
o = other opposition players
c = catcher with ball
. = empty squares

If the pushed back player is pushed into the catcher, can the catcher then use sidestep to escape the cage? I.e. move to one of the empty squares at the top of the diagram above, allowing him an easier dodge to run in the touchdown.

The player may move to ANY adjacent square, provided it's free...
Tell my snotling that, after three blocks resulting in PB, crossed the def line for free during my opponent's turn Twisted Evil

The secondary PB is a PB never the less, so the Sidestepping player Coach has full control on the move....

Allowed. Secondary pushbacks are handled exactly as the original pushback so you can still use sidestep. You don't get a pickup though - the ball automatically scatters.

I'd say yes. The rules don't mention being blocked so yes
