In the poll the following tourney styles:
Swiss
Cup
Elimination
Something else!
I have only played league like games (in tourneys) with star player points can someone explain the tourney typs listed above?
I tried to contact the NAF dudes but they never got back to me

swiss:
starts with a random draw, everybody gets points for victory, draw etc. After the first round the players who did best play eachother etc. (if two players won 4 - 0, they'll play each other etc.)
After each round a new score is made and again the best plays the next best etc. This way the winner has beaten other coaches that are good / played well at the time. (no one can play the same opponent twice btw)
Cup:
I guess that's the same as elimination but it could be this as well:
The participating teams play games against eachother, possibly not nessecarlily against all opponents. This gives you a ranking by points / win-loss ratio / something else and the best 2 play eachother in the final.
Knock out.
Random draw, the winners go through, random draw again and so on to the final.
I like the swiss system as all players keep on playing (everybody plays 5 / 6 matches) Also the winner has the right to be the winner. And tension stays till the end. Usually the last round is the decider with several teams being able to windwarfcoach - May 23, 2003 - 01:24 AM Post subject:

no, if you manage to win the next few you'll end up pretty high. You get points for victory (say 5) draw (say 3) and losing with just one TD difference (say 2)
If you manage 1 loss and four victory's it's still 22 points out of possible 25. Hardly anyone is going up against that.Mordredd - May 23, 2003 - 04:39 AM Post subject:
The Blood Bowl is a Swiss tournament. The Danish guy who won the league (not the BB cup) lost in the third round. Losing a game does not end your chances of winning overall.Tutenkharnage - May 23, 2003 - 08:55 AM Post subject:

It depends on the tournament. Last year's Resurrection tournament crowned a champion that had won 2 of 4 games, if I recall. It's not always about on-field results.
I agree about the tension, however. Geoff Porritt and I played a fantastic game on Table One in the last round!

If you win, you go ahead... if you loose, you're out.
That's the way to crown the best team, in my opinion...
The problem is only how to create some more matches for the losers, becouse it will be unfair to send them home just after a match....
Possibly a Swiss Tournament for the losers of the first two matches?

In Rugby sevens tournaments the teams that get knocked out in each of the knock out rounds get pooled into their own lesser knock out cups. (i.e. first round losers cup, second round losers cup, third round etc...) In effect you have to be knocked out twice before you're gone for good.Indigo - May 23, 2003 - 10:41 AM Post subject:
the only problem with the tennis system happens when people have travelled a long way to get there, only to lose their first game and not have a hope of winning. at least with the swiss tournament you still do have a chance!
I've often wondered if a champions league style tournament would work, having groups of 4 teams with the top 2 going through then playing off. Although it does have the problem I've described, people are guaranteed three games at least. People who get knocked out can always play for NAF ranking afterwards...

Swiss is by far the best system for these sorts of competitions. It lacks the random element that knock outs have (you may lose a game due to a turn 1 pitch invasion) while ensuring the best player (over the tourney) wins.
However Swiss does not work well with less than 5/6 rounds. So 1 day tourneys should probably use something else.Melifaxis - May 27, 2003 - 09:44 AM Post subject:

I've had a saurus die on the opening block of the game, and 5 players cleared off the pitch on the second kickoff of that game in a bracket tournament. It was not fun, but I pulled it out.
Conversely, there's no better feeling than having your team battle to first in a 32 team, single elimination tournament. My humans pulled it off with three OT wins, and two of those were in turn 8 of OT.
