Rules Questions - SImple Block question

Hi all

Have a bit of a query which I am sure people can answer quickly, recently had the following situation (o is the blocker, d is defender, x is off the pitch, a is a 2nd attacker and _ is empty square):

1 _ o
a d _

Now the blocker seemed to think he could push the defender off the pitch but the defender thought that he could be pushed to position 1 as that is further away from the attacker than he was before.

Simple question, which is right?

Regards

The defender goes out of the pitch.

in case one answer isn't enough, I agree he goes off the pitch

1 isn't one of the eligible push back squares from the direction of the blocker

if a was vacant he would have to be pushed there, the other 2 eligible squares would be the first 2 xs (reading left to right) which are both in the crowd

It's all on page 10 of the rulebook under Pushbacks.

The diagram at the lower right of the page shows how they are knocked away (directly away from the blocker or to either side of that square) and the text in the second paragraph clearly says "Players on the pitch must be pushed off the pitch if there are no eligible empty squares on the pitch."

In your diagram player 'a' is in the space that would have been the eligible pushback square so player 'd' has to go off the pitch and into the loving arms of the crowd.

Thats great thanks, still taking a little while for us to get used to the rules (can barely play a game every couple weeks) but least its the finer points we are querying now rather than the basics Smile

We have decided to start having a neutral 'ref' at each game now to make final decisions, check rules etc as this allows for smoother running of the game.

d has "side step" or "stability"? (edit: sorry, i mean "stand firm")
o is using "grab" ?

if not, d will go out.

if d has side step then he will be able to use that to move to one of the blank spaces and won't go into the crowd

if d has stand firm then he will stay where he is as it can't be countered at all by a block (only a blitzing player who has juggernaut)

if o has grab you can use it to cancel side step on d and still push him into the crowd

if o has grab and d doesn't have side step, then you can choose not to use grab to push him into the crowd, or you can choose to use grab and he will go to one of the empty squares
