Rules Questions - Are journeymen optional?

In the post game sequence the rule about journeymen states that a team can bring journeymen ... until they can field 11 players for the next match.
do a coach have to pick jouirneymen or can he save on inducements and starting the game with less than 11 but having a merc positional otherwise unaffordable?
For example: may the coach of a dark elves's team that has lost 2 lines skip the journemen and pick a mercenary blitzer/witch elf instead at the start of the next game

Yes, journeymen are not mandatory:

Post-mach sequence 2.7

If a team can only field 10 or less players for the next match, the team may bring Journeymen onto the roster for free until the team can field 11 players for the next match.

BUT, just keep in mind that this is a decision you're supposed to make during your post-game. You are not supposed to finalize your TV and then go onto add a journeyman once you know your next opponent's TV. Razz

Thanks for the answer, the situation is quite the opposite.
Imagine this situation:
1st match of a league: a wood elf team with only 1wd suffer 2 cas (lineelf) and loses, while an amazon team wins his game. Both teams didn't get any improvements.
The TV difference will be 150k (and in a league is easy to know the TV of your next opponent) so the elf coach, knowing that his next match is againt the amazons, will glady exchange two loner lineelf with a mercenary wardancer even if this means playing with 10 players because a wardancer will be far more useful than 2 unskilled loner lineelfs

There're positionals that have personal RR due to their skill (thowers for example), so having loner will not endager their performance.
I was sure that the rule about journeymen was meant to ensure that teams start matches with (at least) 11 players, but if journeymen are not mandatory then i was wrong.

Journey men are optional, and purchased in the post game. A team does not need to start a game with 11 players like they have to start with in their initial build. S.

Yup, GcClaudio, as Blammaham mentions, you could opt not to take journeymen if you're betting that you'll have enough inducement room to purchase a merc instead.

It's risky though as unless you're certain about what the Amazon's have done, you could find yourself perhaps a few kgp too short to take the WD.

In our league, I think we assume that game results are considered simultaneous--like the last day of a soccer season. As a result, there's always a bit of uncertainty about the TV of your next opponent so that it's hard to precisely min/max your TV for the next opponent.
