North America - Death Bowl 2003 - 2 days to go

Post subject: Death Bowl 2003 - 2 days to go
All right everyone I've finished pounding out the details for the 2003 Death Bowl Championship. The tournament will be held on the 18th & 19th of October, 2003, in the Montreal, Quebec area. This is THE NAF sanctioned Death Bowl Championship. The winner of this tournament will be determined in a four way Death Bowl match between the top four players after four rounds of play.

Full tournament rules and further details on how to register can be found at www.house-rulez.com/db2003/db2003.html.

If you have ever wanted a chance to test your team in the brutal game of Death Bowl then this is your chance. Do you think you have what it takes to take to the field against three opponents at the same time? Do you think your team will survive with NO referee, NO Apothecary, and NO regeneration? Find out for yourself! This is the Death Bowl, check your soul at the door!

The 2003 Death Bowl Championship is hosted by www.house-rulez.com

Hey Brian, you have any recommendations on hotels near the event location?
CyberHare - Jul 31, 2003 - 10:16 AM

Well that would depend on if you would ratrher stay closer to the event location for more money or stay a little further away for a more reasonable rate. I'll gather a few names and phone numbers and post them to the Death Bowl website.

Only Half ? And what's the rests excuse ? Smile

I'm guessing that most of the Americans have been intimidated by the utter brutality of the whole event. I mean if sexy women in black longcoats can't coax them to come they must be petrified Shocked

I'm further along with the axe than those pictures detail. There has been a LOT of grinding going on and it's almost to the point where you can swing it comfortably Twisted Evil ...... not that I've tried...... or intended to.

Oh and I don't think I've mentioned this anywhere yet so here's an exclusive for you NAF forum guys. Anthony Watts has agreed to paint the figure that will sit on top of the first place trophy. Now if that's not something to get excited about then you have never seen one of Anthonies painted figs! There will be no pictures posted of the finished fig before the tournament. Those who attend the tournament will have the privilege of being the first to see it.

I would trade the whole website for the cool tournament pack that you've prepared. I'm glad you like the axe. I really hope that I can finish it in time for the tournament but I'm running out of time. It's done enough now to suffice for this year but I was hoping it would be completed in time. Dang real world, keeps soaking up my BB time Very Happy

Hi guys!

As I noticed Brian earlier, I won't be able to attend because of working duties (by the way, TBBFers attending the tourney should know that the Habs will kick some Maple Leafs asses on Saturday the 18, at the Bell Center, hence me not attending the Death Bowl...).

BUT, I was wondering, if a guy not working on a Sunday and willing to put some faces on the nicknames he acquainted for the last year or so could show up, with a half painted team, and play some casual BB with some of the guys? Would I interfere with the tourney or is there some possibilities?

Let me know !

Come on by. You're more than welcome to come. Putting faces to the names is what these tournaments are all about. Well, aside from kicking your opponents .....

It's only a two day drive Cool

I've been driving around to all the gaming stores in the area and personally putting up adverts for the event. I have no idea how many people are coming yet but my most conservative estimate at this time is 30 people. Anyone who thought this was going to be a small tournament should think again.

Ahh there we go. You won't be dissappointed if you do come. I've just finished making another 5 DB boards so I have enough for 40 coaches to play at the same time. More than that and I'll have printed copies of the board for people to use.

I posted a second prize on the website. It's not as cool as the first but they can't all be fantastic.

we haven;t figured that out yet, but I think it will be the motel listed on Brian's web site. I'll let you guys know what I find out.
CyberHare - Sep 09, 2003 - 06:54 AM
Post subject:
Let me know if you guys need the names of more places to stay. There are a lot of places to stay in the area. It all depends on the price range you're looking for. If you are searching the internet for places you'll probably want something on "Taschereau", that's the main street in my area and where the best motels are. You should also be looking in the Brossard or Greenfield Park area's. That's not quite in the same area as the tournament but there is only the one hotel listed on my website in the immediate location of the tournament, and it's pricey. Of course a person could also stay downtown Montreal and take the Metro over to the tournament location. It would be about a half hour metro ride from Downtown to the location with one switch-over.

Melifaxis, if you do come in by bus and you need to get picked up at the bus station let me know and I'll arrange something. That goes the same for anyone else traveling into town. If I can help out I will.

Another way into town is the Train. I'm not sure of the costs tough.

Anyway if you guy's need info let me know and I'll round it up for you Very Happy

The cheapest/cleanest place I can recommend is the "Siesta Motel" listed on my website. Most comparable motels in the area will be about the same price for a room. Now if all you're concerned with is the price then there's the Falcon Motel, but they've been under renovations for the past year and may not be quite finished yet. There's also the Florence but that's a nostalgic trip back into the 70's, complete with shaggy carpet and tasseled bed-spreads Confused The Canada Motel is a good place to stay though I've never personally stayed in any of their regular rooms, the suites are the best in the area though Cool There's of course the Best Western and the Quality Inn but you won't get a room there for under 120 unless they're having a special.

Here's a few places and numbers, I'll list more as I find them

Hello, Rod Davidson here from Niagara Falls, I'm thinking I may like to attend the DEATHBOWL! My question is, how are the Toronto based players getting there? Driving, train, bus, flying? If driving think I could tag along, I'd give gas money.

Thanks in advance for any help, oh & I'm a member of the NAF obviously by using this forum, but I'm still waiting for my member card package to be mailed.

Thanks again , hope to hear a responce soon, bye: Rod Davidson

If I remeber correctly I think I mailed out your membership package yesterday. Now don't start celebrating yet, I may be mistaken. I'll check at work tomorrow to see if you were in my last printing. I mailed out the Canadaian packages without taking down the names so I'll have to check my master list that I printed from to see if you were on it. I'll let you know tomorrow for sure.

You'll probably be the first if you do. I don't know what it is about Canadians but no one has Pre-registered. A lot of people have told me that they are coming though Rolling Eyes Sigh, I tell you. To organize a tournament you REEEAAALLLLY gotta love Blood Bowl. Oh and having a wife that doesn't kill you for the all the time and up front cash doesn't hurt either.

My boss has been so kind to let me have the Friday & Monday off of work (to play with my toys- as he so kindly puts it Evil or Very Mad ) so if anyone needs help or what-not getting into town PM me and I'll pass out my cell Number and see what else I can do to help.

I've got fantastic news. Andy Hall will be at the Death Bowl. With the help of a lot of people, including the NAF, I've arranged for Andy Hall to be at the Death Bowl. He will be acting as a VIP referee for the weekend and helping out with the painting judging. He will also be conducting an informal seminar/question period on Sunday for NAF coaches at the tournament. Who knows he may even play in the tournament.

For those of you who have been hiding under a rock. Andy Hall is the editor of Blood Bowl magazine, a BBRC member and oversees Blood Bowl for Specialty Games. This is Andy's first trip to Canada and the first time a UK representative of the BBRC attends a non-GW tournament in North America.

I'm not saying that at all. It's simply a matter of odds. OMM and Mel have as much a chance as everyone else to win the title. It's simply that the US team doesn't seem to be very well represented at the tourney. With good Toronto and Montreal players outnumbering them at least 3 to 1 the odds are that it'll go to a Canadian.

That and the fact that the Toronto Boys have been practicing their Death Bowl (Lord knows they need practice) Wink

Now if a few more Americans want to get the lead out....

The Blood Bowl tournament season continues apace with the Death Bowl being held in Montreal on the 18th & 19th of October. It was only $79 a night for two people! The woman I spoke to wasn't the most polite, but she did mention that I could have got the room with a whirlpool/spa! So it can't be too bad! So at least 2 people will be there.
(This is the hotel that Brian suggested on his site)

Another friend in the TBBF booked at:

Comfort Inn South
7863 Boul Taschereau
Longueuil, Quebec Canada J4Y 1A4

It was $95 - $100, but is farther away on the same street.

Hope this helps! I left it to the last minute as usual.

Wouldn't bother me if I didn't play. Heck last year I flew all the way to England just to help referee the Blood Bowl. I did get a couple games in that weekend though. Either way as long as everyone has a blast I'm a happy camper.

Hey all this will probably be my last post until after the tournament so I'll bring you al up to date as to the news I have now.

- Andy has arrived safe and sound.

- Two of the hostesses that were supposed to be at the event have dropped out so there will only be one hostess now (sorry Mel Smile )

- There are now over 20 prizes to give away! Not to mention the Gutter Runner, Metal Ball, and door prize fig that everyone is going to get.
The prizes are...

- Andy has brought with him a whole case of Pro painted figs. A number of which have never been seen before(such as some undead cheerleaders and the new minotaur) and some famous figs (such as the figs used for the pictures on the goblin star player cards.

Well that's about it for now. I hope to see a lot of you there. If you can't make it this year Sad there's always next year Wink

As it goes the first 30 people to show up get the metal ball. Eveyone gets the Gutter Runner and Door prize. From there there's a good chance that you also get a prize.

Well, I'm having a great time - all the people I've met have been very gracious and friendly, and talented coaches to boot. My match with Andy was a textbook case of disaster on the final roll of long and tortuous plays, for both of us. Some brilliantly painted teams and our host has been the best. There were so many prizes because I expected a much larger turnout than I got. At least everyone who was there got a prize out of it so I guess that's pretty cool all the same.

I'd hate to see tournament organizing become a competition. Those who know me well will tell you that I never do anything half way. I either go completely overboard or I don't bother doing it at all Smile I have experience in event organizing as I was a wedding coordinator for a short while. I even took a course on event organizing. It's just something I like to do. That's why I don't play at half the tournament I go to, I just go to help out.

At the end of the day what makes an event great is the people who attend it and their willingness to have a good time. Like the saying goes,"it only takes one bad apple to ruin the whole batch". That aplies to event organizing as well. Be it drunk Uncle Bob at a wedding or a grumpy coach at a tournament, either one will bring the whole party down. There were just no bad apples at the Death Bowl (maybe a few sour grapes though Laughing )so really I should be thanking all of you for making everything run so well.

Why not...

Montreal, 22:00 or thereabouts on Sunday. A dimly lit portion of one of the city's main streets. Rob is walking along looking for someplace to grab a bite to eat before his bus leaves. Suddenly, two guys in long coats with winter hats hop the wall to the side and step in his path. Out of the corner of his eye Rob notices a few more slide into place behind him.

Goon #1: Cooooke, cooooke?

Rob: Je ne parle français. parlez-vous anglais? (I didn't say it this well, but he understood me well enough. That's about all I know in French besides how to ask for the time)

Goon#2: Cocaine!

Goon#1: Do you want to buy some cocaine?

Rob: No thanks.

Goon#2 (looking angry): Heroine? What about heroine?

Goon#1 (places hand in pocket)

Rob: Uh, no thanks.

Goon #2: Marijuana? What about marijuana?

Rob (finally gets his wits about him): Sorry guys, I don't have enough money today. Maybe tomorrow.

Goon #2: Ah, ok.

They begin to head back towards their alley hiding place.

Of course, once I got past the initial surprise all I could really think was....
Whatever you do Rob DO NOT make THE gesture and say "Deathsticks...I don't need any deathsticks. You should go home and rethink your life."

I guess that's what I get for wandering around alone looking like a tourist. No blood, no foul though Very Happy

Sadly, my NAF dice failed me for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th time ever.

Well, returned safely to the land of FLAW - great time with Brian St. James, Andy, and the great coaches.

a. Toronto's own Rob and Ben each handed me 2-0 beatings - I'll have to prepare better for Underworld since the TBBF will be well represented in Ann Arbor;
b. Melifaxis' dice worked better against him and Andy H. - just couldn't move into the final round - seems to be my curse;
c. Brian and those who helped (Rene, Brian, Billy and Mrs. St. James) ran a wonderful tourney and the final Deathbowl rounds were a howl - utter chaos and ever-shifting politics in all games.

Thanks, Brian, for everything - look forward to doing it again in Montreal - glad to be part of the first one!

Jim AKA Old man Monkey, where did you get a nickname like that? very funny. So your going to be at the underworld, that's awesome. I'm hoping to have my skaven painted by then. I'm doing the Secret of NIMH theme. it's going to be kewl. I have the figure for my coach which is of course Nicodemus. I'm going to give the model a nice long beard and glowing eyes and all. Maybe with skaven you'll give me at least a little bit of a sweat. Skaven are pretty squishy. So you have the pics downloaded yet, I wouldn't mind seeing them, Brian is taking forever. Just kidding Brian. Anyway enough rambling on, hope to see you all at the underworld. Oh one more thing, what colous should i give my skaven team? I was thinking Black, Orange, and Dark Blue. But i'm not sure. Hmmm decisions, decisions.

OMM, hope I see you on the pitch at Underworld!

I don't feel so bad, being 2-2 before the DB game. I lost to Zombie's Norse 2-1, and Bud's Wood Elves 4-3, both ended up in the top game. Hope to Nuffle that the NAF rankings are kind to me. Cool

Well organized, nice bunch of coaches and great prizes.

There's a dozen or so guys who I've been gaming with for about 15 years or so now - my house has always been the 'clubhouse' (as Phil Bowen calls it) and when one of these guys started passing out email nicknames, we were all '-monkeys'.
So, being the oldest, I got "Old Man Monkey" and it's just stuck.

Yes, I'm planning to be at Underworld to see John, Tom and others I've met this summer. Deathbowl made my seventh tournament outside Florida in addition to our own league championship so it's been busy and great fun. Looking forward to seeing everyone and some more battles on the pitch. Need to brush up my closing play - lately it seems I'm playing to get into the championship match and failing to get through. Perhaps Ann Arbor will be the spot . . . No matter what, can't wait to see everyone again and have another great time, just like the Deathbowl!
