North America - Three Kingdoms Challenge for the Gumpta Cup - Orlando, FL

Post subject: Three Kingdoms Challenge for the Gumpta Cup - Orlando, FL
Announcing to all teams and coaches near and far:

Manhandle in the Panhandle

The Three Kingdoms Challenge for the Gumpta Cup will be held on March 13th and 14th in the Sci Fi City gaming complex in Orlando, FL. This tournament is a NAF-sanctioned, five game, Swiss style event complete with door prizes and a pub quiz.

The rulers of the Three Kingdoms - Falt Skidknee of Skaven Clan Esuom, Shriek and his Ogre princess Bologna of Orc tribe Plugged Nickle, and mage priest Seamus the Heinous of the Lizardmen tribe Tailbreakoph - have commanded the Old Man Monkey to arrange for a tournament worthy of their domains.

Though unsteady of hand and failing of eye, I have endeavored to do so and offer the following starting guidelines:

a. I am arranging a special "Two for One" hotel room deal for those coming from long distances at one of the nearby Marriott properties. This will mean that after you register both for the tournament and the hotel, you will be able to stay one night free. So you can come into town on Friday, see the sights, drink, go out, drink, find some food, drink, and then on Saturday night, your hotel room is free. It will be at one of the Marriott hotels closest to the tournament site and there will be transportation to and from the tourney provided;

b. One of the purposes of holding this tournament is to discover and encourage the many Blood Bowl players in the state of Florida. As such, in addition to the overall tournament trophies, best painted, etc., there will be trophies awarded for: Highest Finishing Florida Coach/Team, Best Painted Team from Florida and perhaps others. In addition to the many great coaches I've met this year, I want to strongly encourage the participation of those Florida coaches who perhaps haven't been to a tourney or haven't played the game in a while;

c. The tournament cost will be $25.00 US and non-NAF coaches may register on site. This fee will include lunch on both Friday and Saturday, as well as the first drink at the designated pub of choice (most likely Mulvaney's Irish Pub in Church Street Station);

d. Specialist Games' own Andy Hall has said he'll be coming (barring an early delivery of their expected newborn, or a Polish screwup of the new fan magazine . . .!) - please join me in welcoming Andy to the land of FLA;

I am presently working on the website and online registration which should be up and ready around 12/10. For those who wish to look at the tournament location, the link is: http://www.sci-fi-city.com/table.cfm

Please email or PM with any thoughts, suggestions or feedback and allow me offer an enormous "Thank You" to all the tournament organizers I've met over the past seven months - I truly appreciate your example and encouragement - you've been a real inspiration to put together this competition.

The challenge and riches of Lustria await all who dare . . . the Manhandle in the Panhandle!.

Hey, I think having Andy was a great thing - when I mentioned the possibility of holding a tourney in Florida, he thought it was great!
Full marks to you, my friend, for getting the Blood Bowl staff interested in crossing the pond!

And you know I and the other folks putting on the tourney would love to have you and the family here - now all I have to do is make sure the weather is decent, otherwise I'll hear about it for months. . . Very Happy

Woo! I won the "Name Jim's Tourney" competition! Now all I gotta do is get down to Florida. Not that the weather here in Buffalo was bad on Sunday: 71 degrees (F), very sunny, great day for football despite the loss! But Monday started at 65, became rainy by noon, and resulted in snow flurries and whiteouts by evening. Tuesday opened with a fine layer of ice over everything.

So Florida sounds rather appealing...Wink

P.S. I'm not kidding. That was the weather.

Sure I'll see, you may have me & my Skaven attending from Niagara Falls Ontario. I could just fly down there I guess, (but if anyone close to me is driving, maybe I could mooch a ride? ((I'd pay them gas $$)))

As stated I can not promiss anything, at the moment my 1st priority is the "Canadian Open", but after that, who knows. Either way thanks for the invitation. Very Happy

That's right - Chet won the $25.00 GC - everyone thought MH in the PH' was pretty cool. So look to March, my fine frozen fiends, er, friends and join us here in the land of FLA.

Hey, BBB, I am doing all I can to come to the Canadian Open - I think that will be the first North American tournament using the new LRB revisions unless Jay incorporates them at the PhilCon tourney next month.

For those who celebrate it, Happy Turkey Day!
For those that don't celebrate Turkey Day, have a great weekend!

Well, there'll be a bunch of us from the Skeleton Crew making our way south for this one.....a small point, however, to not confuse those from outside the sunshine state. Technically, northwest Florida is the "panhandle" (where we live), and Orlando is really central Florida...perhaps "Manhandle in the Middle" or "Up the Gut" would have been more geographically appropriate (a side note: whenever my brother says the name "Manhandle", he begins to giggle like Butthead. Perhaps the name is a good one after all!).

Seriously, great job getting this going Jim - anything you need from us up here, you know you have it (and I'll hopefully have that board file for you this week)

Nah, don't worry about it. It's barely celebrated in Quebec anyway.

I know it's official, but the reason I was asking for it is: You don't allow wizards, but the halfling chef. So is the Runesmith considered a wizard or not (I hope not).

I should actually post that in a different thread...maybe the Canadian Open thread, so I don't fill up OMM tournament postings with non-related stuff......sorry about that

OK, OK - sorting this out:

1. I KNOW where the panhandle is, but since childhood everyone from other parts of the US and, well, everywhere, thinks of the state of Florida as the 'Panhandle' of the US, or other things less suited to a PG-13 message board . . . for you Floridians, think of it as "Manhandle in Orklando" or something like that . . . Smile

2. Jeez, Tors, at least you could try to come down to sunny Florida if you're going to post on the TKC thread Wink Seriously, as I finalize the rules for the TKC, I'm going to be looking at what Neo, Anthony, Galak, and others have used/tested. If JJ and Andy are able to put together tourney values for Stars, then I'll be looking at that.

3. The registration website is very nearly done - a great big "Thanks" to Tim Ibe who helped in getting the important pieces in place. The ruleset and a logo/flyer will be completed sooner than I thought, thanks to Tim's help in getting the online registration ready.

4. Thanks to Jason and the Skeleton Crew - I'll have the hotel details nailed down by next week so the reservations will be ready.

5. So, let's see - Andy's in, Tut's planning a vacation, Lucien's dancecard is getting full, Cyberhare and family want to get a sunburn at the beach - nice, very nice!!!!!

Oh, and I was reminded that the tournament date is Spring Break weekend in much of the US and you all know what vast numbers of college folk do at Spring Break - come play in the land of FLA. Yes, the scenery gets pretty good here around that time . . . just in case you were wondering! Cool

Take care all,

Well, some superb tournament news to share:

1. Indigo has offered to construct the "Most Traveled" trophy for the Three Kingdoms Challenge! As I and the other tournament organizers plan on having the trophies done by the end of January, he has said no problem. For those of you who haven't seen it, Indigo has put up a Christmas goblin as the prize in a Christmas contest in the 'Announcements' section. It look fantastic! Heartfelt thanks to David for his generosity!

2. The details for the hotel have been worked out - the official tournament hotel for the Three Kingdoms Challenge is the Marriott Courtyard East, 12000 Collegiate Way in Orlando. The hotel is about 5 miles from Sci-Fi City and there will be transportation provided to and from the tourney site and the hotel.

http://www.marriott.com/dpp/PropertyPage.asp?MarshaCode=MCOCE

The overnight price is $79, which will be the total cost for TWO nights if you choose to come in early on Friday - so it really will be cheap to stay and play an extra day (no intent to rhyme there...) More specifics will be available on the website in a couple of days.

3. Andy Hall has said he is bringing a big bag of goodies as prizes, though no specifcs yet (other than something about Gutter Runners . .?!?!)

4. I am finalizing the tournament rules with the wise help of a number of friends and colleagues - the final rules set, along with the website, should be out by Friday.

So, we keep adding reasons to join the fun each day - this is super.
Thanks again to Indie! Your helpfulness has far exceeded mailing over things from the UK - it is greatly appreciated!

Hi OMM,
I'd love to come down to Fla. to play BB and enjoy the sun, but as of now I can't say, since money is tight (of course, it's close to Christmas) and my plans are to move to Germany sometime in the first half of the year. Until I have a better certainty of things I can't make a commitment.

So....let's keep the fingers crossed and hopefully we can have a re-match (I bet you're still talking to your one hobgoblin about his major mistake).

Hey Melifaxis - can't wait to see 'em! And stay warm up there in the white stuff!

A couple more pieces of good news:

a. the new Blood Bowl HoS (head of system) has been cleared by Jervis to attend the tournament along with Andy Hall - this may be the new person's first tournament upon hiring and probably the first trip to North America. So now I'm really encouraging every coach who can to attend, not only to meet the new game manager but to show him/her that Blood Bowl is alive and well on this side of the pond;

b. the first trophy pics will be up by next weekend: the '1st runnersup' and 'Best Defense' trophies are ready for painting now - can't wait for the community to see them and hear what everyone thinks!

Weather report on March 13th, 2004 in Orlando:

"The biggest and coldest thunderstorm to hit Central Florida in 50 years has arrived, bringing freezing rain and flooding to the Orlando area..."

as Andy, Jake, Chet, Rita, Brian, Mike, Rob and who knows how many others huddle in the hospitality room at the Marriott Courtyard, evilly staring at the old monkey in the corner who is consuming as much Mexican Antifreeze as he can manage...

Some tournament updates...

1. Speaking of sleeping space, the hotel is rapidly selling out of our block of rooms so if you've not made your reservations, act quick. More rooms may be added, but the cutoff date is February 27th.

2. Arrangements have been made to ship home any trophies that are too big for a plane or car! So don't worry - your Lizardman trophy will arrive in great shape to show off to your friends and put on your prize mantle!

3. Matt May, professional photographer of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and a good friend, will be coming over to take the group photo as well as the action in the first round. He will be available to take a hi-quality photo of your team if you wish, so bring your best stuff.

Bennigan's? Wow, didn't know they had those down there.

Sadly I don't have much progress to report on the painting front this weekend. Still 3/11 completed with 2 more on the verge of being done and the rest (6) half way done at best.

I got carried away with a conversion idea that ate up Saturday night and then my side cutters decided to snap in half and fly up into my eye last night (luckily I was smart enough to be wearing eye protection) but the lack of side-cutters after hours and having to do my taxes this weekend pretty much stopped me in my tracks.

Crunch time. 12 days to go...but I will get them done!

EDIT: Tuesday
5/11 done including the biatch of a conversion I decided to undertake. Now it's straight painting from here Very Happy

Crunch time is right! Final practice games are being played, coaches are scrambling to finish painting their figs, and I'm just trying to get the final details nailed down...

This is the final call for all coaches - online registration will be over in a week - after that, you'll have to show up at Sci Fi City...
It's going to be fun...
It's going to be a battle...
It's the Three Kingdoms Challenge... are you ready to become the Gumpta Cup Champion???!!

See you there!

I would love to do some trades down there.

I just made a quick web site of the minis I want and the ones I have for trade. I made it from excel. It looks great to me but I'm not sure if you need excel to see it on your PC.

Anyway, here's the link http://www.sju.edu/~deckman/wants.htm

If someone wants something specific I will bring it down. I will warn that I'm not 100% confident in my inventory, so I'll have to check at home to make sure I've got the mini for trade before we finish any deals.

See you all there in just over a week.

Yes, but Falt Skidnee and his heirs are always dangerous, even when their unscrupulous counselors and advisors give them bad advice!

And the Orcs have shown up in force - five teams in support of Orc leader Shriek and the grotesquely fetching princess Bologna...

I'm worried that Tribe Tailbreakoph and the other Lizardmen tribes are strangely quiet - this usually means only one thing: war!!! They appear to have reached an uneasy alliance with their Amazonian rivals and hired some mercenary Norse teams (most notably the renegade Blackland Wasters) to do their dirty work. Seems the Lizardmen habit of lopping off the heads of their best players for their trophies has left them short come tournament time... Smile

Looks like quite a brouhaha is about to boil over - all of Lustria is bracing for the impact of the Three Kingdoms Challenge...!

details? you're asking the worng person since my memory sucks...

overall champ was ken washington, whose dominant weekend also included the most casualties and the best defense trophy... nice guy, mean player.

ben from toronto won the painting honors with a really cool orc team with lots of nice conversions. i came in second with a team i threw together in fits and starts over the last week... coming in second, even with a team i didn't even considere well-painted pisses me off, so be warned one and all, i will never lose another painting competition again...

second and third were... ummm... chris ('skummy' i think?) from virginia won one or the other, was the other top prize ben's as well? hell, i was so far from the top tables i couldn't even see who was there, and my memories of the awards ceremony are sketchy at best... i believe chris had most td's as well?

local favorite pat wynn won for best sport, and in my opinion, should have been up for best painted team to boot, an oversight which i thought was the only great injustice of the weekend...

i went 1-2-2 and just barely managed to accomplish my weekend goal of staying out of the third row of tables...

so, there you go, an absolutely useless and probably woefully innaccurate look at the victors... we had a great group of people show up for this, including 28 coaches and various camp followers, and i don't think anyone failed to have a good time. jim did a phenomenal job of putting this thing together and it was remarkably well-organized and presented by he and the rest of the tampa gang who gave up a weekend to man the computers and administrative tasks and didn't even get to play... we had jake and andy in from gw, who are stand-up guys, and hey, there was no shortage of good donuts, so all in all, a great time, so who cares who won?

Wow!! It was a ton a fun and I'm glad I made the trip down for such a fun tourney. I really liked Jim supplying us with dice because mine turned out great for me. Smile

It was fun to finally put faces to names on the such as Melfaxis, Jaylazer, Sean Newboy, meeting and playing Chet, Phil Bowen (just love his figs), Pred_Danche, Brian St. James, and people who I didn't know like Javier, Eric, Gabe, Ben and everyone else!!!

Well I managed to win with Khemri (5-0) without giving up a TD. My first game was against BloodyHorns-an all beastman/mino team that I managed a 1-0 win against. Then came Javier and his undead which I managed to score 2 td's against and only person who beat me in cas's (2-3). Then I had to play my buddy Marcus who I drove down with and is in my local league. 1-0 win against Chaos Dwarves and Marcus's only lost for the day. Next up was Chet and his Norse who came the closest to scoring on me. He had a short throw with a rr to catcher for a td, but a pesky mummy intercepted the ball for the stop. Then the khemri did what they do best and cleared the pitch of all norse players by the end of the game for a 1-0 win. Chet's luck started off great in first 3 turns but fell apart after the INT. he was 0-7 on KO rolls. For the final game I played Ben's best painted Orcs. He was playing push a mummy early then a skeleton started the carnage by cas'ing his leader blitzer. Khemri go on to grind the Orcs into the ground for a 2-0 win.

Overall it was a fun tournament....khemri with hot dice are scary tho...lucky i didn't go up against any real speed teams since scoring was a chore.
My FNBBL mate, Skummy came in 2nd (also undefeated with a tie vs Ben's Orcs) with most TD's with 14. A real sweep for FNBBL and the states. We kept the Gumpta Cup in the States...(lucky germany and spain didn't send any reps Smile )
I took home the Most Casualties with 18 with Skummy's Skaven in 2nd with 14 (his rat ogre had 7--but he also played 3 AV7 teams Smile )

I as well had a great time at my first ever Bloodbowl Tournament. It was great to meet so many other players from the state of Florida and also some of the other players from the States and Canada.
Jim and his crew did an excellent job of planning and the tourney turned out great.
A quick review of my 5 games with the Dark Elves. I stated off playing Typhon and his Ork team. That went extremely well for me as I won 4-0 with no casualties for or against me.
The second game was against Chet and his Norse. I kicked off to Chet and was able to hold him off from scoring during the first half with my witchelf playing hero. The second half I was unable to get my offense going and turned the ball over. Chet scored late in the second half and beat me 1-0.
My third game was against Gutt Shot and his Necromantic team. Gutt had a terrible time with his dice and I took advantage beating him 3-0.
After day one I was the top ranked florida coach and that wouldn't last long! I played Skummy and his Skaven. Skummy was just too much for me as he beat me 2-1 on a late second half score where I only had 6 elves left on the pitch.... no way to stop those fast rats. But I pulled a score out of my hat by making 4 1 die blocks with only 1 reroll then a 2 dice, skummy choice, block against his rat ogre. Of course I knocked him down and knocked him out only to have his apothecary keep in the game. I then dodged out and handed to the witch who caught the ball with someone in her tacklezone and then she dodge out and went for it twice to score with no rerolls. It was the best luck I had during the tournament. And might I add, it ended immediately after that...
My third game was a game of frustration against Jaylazer and his woodelves. He spanked me 2-0 although I scored 2 casualties. My die rolling was miserable to say the least. I can't count on two hands the number of one's I threw during the game. Lets just say the game started with throw a rock which knocked out one of my upgraded linemen and ended with a beautiful double skull throw. lol.

Regardless, the TKC was awesome and I am looking forward to next years tournament.

Now, on the some important information. My friend Gabe aka Squighunter Gabe accidentally left his entire Norse team, the Alpine avengers and the new vampire team he won for placing 4th at SciFi City.
He remembered that he left them a few blocks from his home in Miami. He called the store today and they could not find them. If anyone picked them up or knows who might have them please let us know. Gabe had a great time too but needless to say he is a bit distraught at losing his models.

Thanks,

Well, well, well - such a chatty bunch! Very Happy

If British Airways has done their job properly, Jake and Andy are just now on their way home - I've just walked in the door and am setting up computer equpment again, so this quick post, then more later....

I'm so very glad everyone seemed to have a good time - it was as enthusiastic a group of coaches as I've seen... These first thoughts:

a. Congratulations to Ken Washington for as dominant a weekend as I've seen in some time - Overall Champion, Best Defense (no scores against), Most Casualties... and to Chris (2nd Overall) and Marcus (4-1, I think) for showing where some of the real power is on the east coast - in the Friday Night Blood Bowl League in Northern Virginia;

b. The spirit and the enthusiasm was great all weekend - 28 coaches which made for a great set of contests each day and the matches on Tables 1 through 4 were as good as I've seen (Ken's final two matches were classics...);

c. Hey, Skeelo - you Dark Elf madman! Wink - OMM is the guy doing the shouting all weekend wearing the cap that said "Old Man Monkey" - me!
I've got the blue case and I'll get with Gabe and get them to him...

I'll post the final standings and TDs/CASs later tonight - it's been a great but long five days, and the Old Monkey is beat.... time for some dinner!

Hmmm, went through the score sheets this morning as it finally pouring rain (it's pretty clear that Nuffle knew when my request for good weather was up...!). There was a win by Javier Rodriguez in Round 4 that was listed as a Tie - the extra 30 points put him in a tie with Ben Tusim for fourth and Javier won the tiebreak with ONE more touchdown.

So, since you left your trophy with me, Ben, to ship it north, I'm going to co-opt it and send it south to Javier in Miami, along with my sincerest apologies for the error. As a make up, Javier, since you didn't get to chose a prize, I'll PM you and ship along a team of your choice.

But for that, all else looked good... here's the final standings for the Three Kingdoms Challenge 2004. I'll post pics up later this morning.

Thanks everyone again for a great tournament! I'll have a tournament report at House-Rulez in another day or so... maybe even one or two pics of Jake and Andy playing 'touristo' at Universal Studios...

Hey, Grasshopper, there's a gift in the mail for you too... Rob tells me that you were the main man responsible for the construction of all the great pitches to help me out when I thought I might be short. Though we ended up with enough 'official' ones, I can't thank you enough for the work and help you showed by putting those together...

Thanks again... and speaking of thanks:

During the awards ceremony, I spoke aloud my very real gratitude to absent friends who had helped make the tournament first a reality, and then made the weekend special with their advice and encouragement:

Tom Anders: the reality of the TKC this past weekend is just an extension of the experience I shared with so many others at GenCon last year. Tom's skill and ability in handling a large group of Blood Bowlers encouraged me and others to try the same nearer to home. Any thanks starts here with Tom;

Tim Ibe: Not only one of the game's best players but one of community's true living assets - his web code and tournament software, and his generosity in sharing them, made the TKC become 'alive' far sooner than I could have hoped;

John Lewis: Not because he's my 'online boss', but rather his constant question of: what can I, and we, do better? His constant push for quality helped fashion a ruleset that I believe was fair, balanced, and saw the game's best qualities brought to the front and is no small reason why I enjoy working within the NAF group;

Phil Bowen: In my mind, another of our community's living assets - his sculpting and his courage to realize that particular dream should inspire all of us - and having a new friend with that much talent and knowledge right around the corner allowed me to bounce even the most ridiculous ideas off him while playing a friendly Monday night game. I learned to pay attention when Phil said, "I'm not sure that's such a good idea, Jim" and in my lexicon, that's very high praise.

In addition to absent friends and contributors, I had the good fortune to have several people present whose advice and efforts made this past weekend so very special for me:

Chet Zeshonski: None of us have a greater passion for the game of Blood Bowl than does Chet - few of us have reached an understanding of the game like this great guy and his willingness to provide adult education (telling you WHY something is or is not a good idea) is priceless. I can tell you I was pretty much a constant nag over the past four or five months, yet with Jobian patience and good humor, Chet brought me to a better understanding of the game and how to fashion the best possible tournament environment.

Brian St. James: Brian's natural rebelliousness often reminded me to trust my own instincts regarding how things should be done, and I thank him immensely for that reminder. His good humor and cheerfulness also reminded me to remember that this is a great GAME we play and that becoming a TO should not finally take away from enjoying the day and the people around you. Thanks for making the jouney, my friend, it was a real pleasure to have you and the family here;

Andy Hall: When I mentioned to Andy in Montreal that I was considering a tourney in Florida and would he be interested in coming over, I'm not quite sure he thought I was serioius. That he realized I WAS serious and further that he fit a trip across the pond around a expectant wife and a soon-to-be-born magazine just proves to me how special this guy really is - I think the community was fortunate to have him as the G-W contact for so long - I know I'm now fortunate to call him friend;

Jake Thornton: When the chance came to have the new Blood Bowl Head of System come over with Andy, I jumped at it, honestly as much to promote the tournament as anything else. Little did I know that the 'new' guy would be as friendly and nice a guy as one could ever hope to meet - not only was it a great pleasure/relief to discover that Jake's knowledge of the Blood Bowl game is superb, but his interest and understanding of game design and how games ought to work is a joy to be around.

Any shortcomings of the weekend's events are mine alone - in badly translating the ideas of others or sheer stubbonness - but whatever 'good' and 'success' and 'positives' came out of the first TKC, there are obviously a great many to credit and thank...

*snff* OK, I'm *snff* done with all the *snff* thank yous that I'm putting onine. The thank you to my local friends will be both private and more tangible... Very Happy

Looks like everyone has made it home safely but for the St. James' - let's all hope for Brian and family to make it home OK, then the tall tales and whatif stories can begin... Very Happy

I didn't think Khemri had what it took to win a tournament. Good job showing me wrong Ken!

thanks Zombie. I think the teams I played were able to play into my hands altho all 5 coaches finished in the top 10. Since Skummy and I live near each other, we might do a 1 vs 2 match up because skaven or woodies woulda been the teams that give khemri trouble (at the cost of blood tho Smile )

Just stuck to the strategy of hitting with 3 dice on the mummies and fouling once a half unless they fouled me back or I was up 3 players on them. Ball handling probs cost me about 3 td's tho...so if anybody scores on khemri it's pretty hard to win. The only person I blew out (2 scores and win the casualty battle) was the last game against the Orcs.

You mean like Whatif the ref had actually done his job in my thrid game? Wink Rolling Eyes

Here's a brief recap of my 5 games at the TKC. Some Kinda Voodoo (Necromantic) consisted of 2FG, 2WW, 2W, 1G, 4Z, 2RR, 1FF. I chose to give block to one WW at the start of the tournament.

Round One Opponent - Gutt Shot (aka Stan Tucker) and his Slaughter House Butchers (Necromantic):
Started off at Table 2. Necromantic vs. Necromantic. This was going to be a battle! Like all 5 of my opponents, Stan would prove to be a great sportsman and it was a really fun game to play. He had a slightly different roster than I had chosen, with only 1 wight and a 5th zombie. His wight had Sure Hands. Right from the get go I knew I wanted one thing, to get his werewolves off the pitch before he got mine! I lost one of my wolves, but not before I had gained a good advantage in players including both of his werewolves. Stan put together a great drive early in the second half, and only some lucky rolling allowed me to pick up the ball and turn things downfield.

Final Score: 2-0 in my favor
Casualties: 1-1
Skill Chosen: Block on 2nd WW

Round Two Opponent - RedJak and his Da Red Wonz (Orc):
Table 3. Time to test my mettle vs an Orklando local. He had an amazing dugout that I'm sure someone captured with a digital camera. My ghoul was able to score quickly down the right sideline after some key blitzes by the werewolves. On the ensuing kick-off one of my werewolves was able to pick up the loose ball after a blitz and scored the following turn. Then things started to turn against me. One of my werewolves was blasted into the dead and injured box by a brute of a black orc and was soon followed by one of my flesh golems. Playing 9 vs. 11 my strategy really became one of survival. In the end, I was able to pull out the win, but only because I got off to a good start.

Final Score: 3-1 in my favor
Casualties: 0-2 in his favor
Skill Chosen: Block on FG

Round Three Opponent - Tutenkharnage (aka Chet Zeshonski) and his Blackland Wasters (Norse):
Back up to Table 2. Well, this one got off to about as bad a start as possible. Chet had just picked up a Dirty Player and Got the Ref on the opening kickoff. His DP proceeded to decimate my ranks and I just couldn't seem to get him off the pitch. Bako, one of my werewolves made several heroic actions throughout the game, but Chet very skillfully filled my Dead & Injured box. When I attempted to foul back, a zombie was ejected - further depleting my ranks. I did finally manage to convince the shoddy ref to eject his DP on the 3rd foul he made in the 2nd half! Chet is a great coach and I paid careful attention so I was sure to learn as much as I could from the game. Damballah-Wedo, my ghoul, scored my only TD after making 3 dodges and picking up the ball in a tackle zone.

Final Score: 2-1 in Chet's favor
Casualties: 1-0 in my favor
Skill Chosen: Block on 2nd FG and Block on Ghoul

Round Four Opponent - Ben (aka Ben Tusim) and his Da NunGa JuNgaz (Orc):
I did my best snoring Saturday night in an attempt to gain an unfair advantage over Ben Wink But, he just shook it off. I was again at Table 2, although only because so many folks had already played one another. Ben and I battled on the sidelines and he got the better of me with some great maneuvering of his squad. I made a key error trying to use my werewolf for a hit that I should have done with my wight, and failed the dodge allowing Ben scored his first TD at the end of the first half. I failed my Bonehead roll on that one. The second half was spent trying to keep him out of the endzone and try to get my hands on the ball for the equalizer. I couldn't pull it off though. I knocked his orcs down left and right, but couldn't manage better than a stun on most rolls. Meanwhile my KO box filled up and he marched down the pitch to score again. I spent the last few moments of the game beating his orcs into the gorund in the hopes of getting a second casualty becuase scoring was impossible at that point.

Final Score: 2-0 in Ben's favor
Casualties: 1-1
Skill Chosen: Block on Zombie (boring skill selection works, really!)

Round Five Opponent - Sturmjarl (aka Pat Wynn) and his She-Wolves of Wynn (Amazon):
Down to Table Seven. It was certainly a pleasure playing the coach chosen as most sporting, and it was obvious to me that he deserved that recognition. He had a great set of Phil's Valkyries painted up quite well for his squad. AV 7 is AV 7 though, and I was able to score four casualties throughout the match. I lost a werewolf very early again this game, and we battled back and forth for a tie. I had the opportunity to attempt one of those plays that you will always remember, that stem from great games that are just sooo close!! I needed to make 3 two-dice blocks, 1 one-die block, a dodge, pick up the ball in a tackle zone, and then dodge again (or throw in a tackle zone) before throwing a long pass to my werewolf sitting the endzone.

My werewolf jumped to his feet and moved into the endzone for the catch. Both Flesh Golems blasted amazons to the ground (one was a KO). My ghoul (with an assist from a zombie) knocked down another amazon freeing up the wight. The wight dodged through a tackle zone, and picked up the ball!! I chose to dodge out of the tackle zone and the 1 came up, so either way it ended the heroic attempts of Shango (wight) to pull out the victory.

Final Score: 2-2
Casualties: 4-0 in my favor
11th Place Overall and a hell of a good time!!!

First, I need to say that the I had a wonderful time down in Sunny Florida.

Jim and his crew did a great job with everything. The only complaints I have are that my butt hurt from sitting on those chairs and I had to leave that great 75 degrees and Sunny weather for 35 degrees and snowing. Confused

It was great to meet so many new people including several I have seen here and on TBB. I was able to put a lot of names and faces together now.

As far as game recaps.
I took Wood Elves with 2 Dancers, 9 Line-elves, 2 re-rolls and 3 FF. I started the tourney with Strip Ball on a Wardancer.
I ended up playing all FL coaches and I don't remember most of their names off the top of my head.

My first match was against Da Wor Mongas(Orc). I won the match 1-0 with casualties 1-2 against me. We kept each other from scoring through out the whole first half. I started the 2nd half with 1 dancer injured and another KO'd (who never came back). My lineleves were able to pull it through and score in true elvin fashion on turn 2. My opponent had the worst luck breaking my armor. I'd say if he knocked me down 30 times he only broke armor 23 times. He did get 2 casuatlies and 2 KO's out of them.

My 2nd match was against the West Volusia Boneheads (Khemri). He won 2-1 with casulaties 3-1 over me.
This game did not go well for me at all. He really made me have to fight for everything that needed and I lost those fights. My luck in this game was demonstrated in my last action. To tie the game I needed a 2+ dodge with a dancer. 1 reroll 1.

Match 3 was against The Sun Burners (Chaos) coached by Rob. I won this game 4-0 with casualties 1-2 in his favor. I think I laughed more in this game than any other game I've played. Rob was a great sport and was truely having fun even when losing. My new Armor Specialist (Woodies don't play Dirty Very Happy ) came in big by injuring the Minotaur twice.

Match 4 put me up against the She-wolves of Wynn (Amazon) coached by Pat Wynn. This game ended in a 2-2 tie with me winning casualties 1-0.
This was one of the more exciting games. My woodies domintated the first half ending it 2-0. The 2nd half looked like it would be all me until he threw a long bomb from a TZ and caught it for his first TD. At this point he out numbered my 9-6 and that proved too much for me. The KO was a 3 turn riot but put the ball on the side line close to the LOS. On my last turn, with 2 amazon's causing interference, I tried to throw a 4+ pass to a waiting dancer. Rolled a 3 then rerolled it to a 2 for a fumble. It was an easy 3+ pu and catch to tie it up.

My last match was real grudge match. My opponent was the Black Forest Falcons, a Dark Elf team coached by Eric Kopp. So it was darkies vs woodies and Falcons on Falcons. This game ended 2-0 in my favor with casualties 2-0 in his favor.
I scored first on turn 2. Then I scored again around turn 7 after some dice on his side.

The 2nd half turned out to be one of pure frustration for Eric. I tried my best to tie up his guys and get in the way and it payed off big time. He was forced to try several 1-die blocks, dodges and gfis. 90% of his rolls where either Skull , Both Down , or 1. I had a pass block guy hanging out near his thrower but he never got a chance to throw. The game ended when I was able to strip the ball loose then toss it well into his backfield.

Overall, my games were very enjoyable and everyone I met was great.

I'm looking forward to seeing every one again.

I took a few pictures which I'll post tonight or tomorrow.

I also would like to ask anyone who can to send me pictures they have of the tournament - I am in the process of compiling a photo album and putting the best pics in as part of my tournament write up - if you have some to share, please do so (I've seen Phil Bowen's, Dan Sloan's, and the Sci Fi City pics... all super, thanks!)
