UNDERWORLD CUP 2006

Keep your calanders clear for the revival of the Underworld Cup on November 18th and 19th, 2006.

This 2 day, 5 game, NAF sanctioned tournament will be held at the U-Con gaming convention at the University of Michigan's Student Union in Ann Arbor, MI.

Information on the tournament can be found here:
http://home.comcast.net/~redhed1211/underworld.htm
(make sure to click on the Underworld Cup rules link)

Information on the convention can be found here:
http://www.ucon-gaming.org

Directions here:
http://www.ucon-gaming.org/area/directions.php

The scoring for wins/losses/ties/bonuses for TDs and Cas will similar to the Chaos Cup rules. Here are some specific changes:

-Choose 6 skills (5 regular, 1 doubles choice) before tourney to give to 6 different players
-No Star players - except Goblins, Halfling, and Ogre Teams
-Different Painting points, focused on effort, not ability
-Sportsmanship points not going toward tournament points at all
-Non GW mini's ARE allowed

**Entrance fee is $20 to get into the convention (with pre-register) and $6 for the Blood Bowl tournament.

**Living Rulebook 5.0 is now official, so this tournament will use LRB5.0.

This is my first tournament as organizer. If it's successful, in 2007, I would like to add in some other rules to make it different from some others.

I'm anticipating local players (there is a league based in East Lansing nearby), players from my old turf in Chicago, and some die-hard NAFers looking for a challenge.

My Dark Elves are now retired and I'll be bringing a new human (with a touch of chaos Twisted Evil ) team I'm working on. Hope to see you all there!

I hope he can attend. I will do my best to keep a great tournament tradition running.

Should be fun. I have not been to this convention before as I just moved here from Chicago, but I like the idea of having other stuff to check out during breaks and stuff.

An update on Underworld Cup 2006:

Prize support has started to come in from sponsors IMPACT! MINIATURES and GAMES WORKSHOP. Full teams, limited edition GW BB models, big guys, a Blood Bowl poster, are all part of the prizes available at this tournament. Maybe even more as we get closer!

Pre-Registration at ucon-gaming.org is NOT yet available, but I would still like to know if you plan on making it out. Click the link in my signature for more info.

Hope to see you all there!!

I was hoping to play the Iron Chefs at ZB II, but I guess I can wait until Chaos Cup.

I think I've told you this already, but I'm planning on attending this tourney. I've got two guys, maybe as many as four, tentatives also.

I'll let Darb27 and Darktremere speak for themselves, though.

That might be the last time I play them for a while.

Really want to try and play a Vampire team with the new LRB 5.0 rules for them and see how they do.

I'm tempted to make it up there, as my former inlaws live up in Whitmore Lake, and I'm sure they'd be happy to have a weekend to spend with their grandson.

Plus it's been forever since I played Doug or John up there in Michigan.

That would be great if you could make it Rod. More Skaven fit perfecly into the Underworld theme!

Also, as an update on the prizes I will have available:

Resurrection Gutter Runner
Limited Edition Lizardman Cheerleader
Impact Mini's Deadling Team
Impact Mini's Imp Team
Impact Mini's Snow Troll
Deathmatch BB Novel

There will be more, I'm working on getting some signed Jervis items as well as a few other mini's. Only the 6 prizes listed above are confirmed thus far however.

Last night I finished my Underworld Cup trophy. Based off the widely seen BB Dagger trophy.

I wanted to do a repaint to make it darker and more Underworldish. Also I found this pack of mini Spawn figures and 3 out of the 4 look great on top of a trophy. If it works out, I'll put a different one on the trophy for the year after!

So the winner will get this lovely trophy to take home and impress the ladies with. They will also get first dibs on the prize pool described in the previous post.

Another prize I'll have is this rare Blood Bowl poster straight from Andy Hall's stash. Arms not included.

I will let you know when online pre-registration is available.....

Awesome, sounds great!

Hopefully the U-Con online pre-registration will be up soon. I was able to haggle a bit on the pricing of the event. It should be $6 for the event and $20 to get a 3 day pass for the convention. Previous years the BB tourney was $10 I believe.

Update to the rules...

After thinking about it, I'm allowing SOME inducements for teams to purchase when they are created. Also, I clarified the Overtime in final round rule. All changes are in red.

Post subject: PRE-REGISTRATION NOW OPEN!!!

You can now officially pre-register for the Underworld Cup BB tournament at the U-Con gaming convention at Univ of MI Student Union in Ann Arbor MI on Nov 18-19.

If you Pre-register the cost is $20 to enter the convention for the entire weekend and an additional $5 for the Underworld Cup event which is on Sat and Sun. If you choose to purchase a ticket at the door it's $25 to get in plus $5 for the event. (I was told it was $6 originally, but the U-Con webpage says $5 so that's what I'm going by).

To register go to:
http://www.ucon-gaming.org

You will want to register for the Weekend Pass and for the Underworld Cup. You can use the BROWSE EVENTS options to see all the games that are going on. Make sure you register for BOTH days of the tournament. The event numbers are MN-SA09-01 for Saturday and MN-SU09-01 for Sunday.

Please either reply to this thread or PM me if you have Pre-registered and also what race you are thinking of bringing. You don't have to stick with that team, but I would like to know who has registered since I will be updating my website to show who is coming.

http://home.comcast.net/~redhed1211/underworld.htm
Make sure you have the most recent tournament rules dated 9/3. Rules are a link on website.

Make sure you read all the general rules and FAQs on the U-Con site. Also take special note of the vistor's section:

      Quote:
To assist our attendees, U-Con has arranged a number of rooms at the special convention rate of $74 per night at the Fairfield Inn by Marriot. The Fairfield is conveniently located just off State Street near Briarwood Mall. Amenities include complimentary wireless Internet access and deluxe continental breakfast. Please contact the Fairfield Inn at 734-995-5200 and mention U-Con Gaming Convention when you make your reservation.

I was told that this hotel is about 5 miles from the event and the hotels that are closer are much more expensive. There is a free shuttle that will take you over to the Union.

I did some additional research and this info is from Expedia.com on 9/20.

Days Inn - 56/night
America's Best Value Inn - 56/night
Red Roof - 60/night
Super 8 - 65/night
Ann Arbor Univ Hotel - 70/night
Comfort Inn - 75/night
Best Western - 76/night
Fairfield Inn - 79/night, special U-con rate of 74

Address of Univ of MI Student Union:
530 S. State Street
Ann Arbor, MI 48109

Using Mapquest, America's Best Value Inn seems to be the closest at 2.5 miles away and it's on State St which is what the Union is on. No way to get lost! Also it got pretty decent overall rankings 4/5 on Expedia. And it's cheap. 2 Queen size beds is standard.

I'm going to check in on Friday and checkout Sunday so 2 nights. I'll probably book it here soon.

Since this is a gaming convention there are lots of other events going on. You may want to register for some events that occur on Fri or after your BB games on Sat and Sun. Some of the other games include:

Axis and Allies
Hack-n-Slash
Arkham Horror
Chess Variants
Dork Tower
Yu-Gi-Oh
Magic
Mechwarrior
Battletech
HorrorClix
Zombies!
Warhammer Fantasy
Heroclix
Star Wars Miniatures
Battlefleet Gothic
Various D&D
Star Wars D20
Shadowrun
Call of Cthulhu
Rifts
GURPS
Deadlands

Also seminars: Paint and Take, Game Designing, Auction, Building Fantasy worlds, Smithee Awards (worst movie clips), Speedpainting, Storytelling

Lots of prizes will be available including a Resurrection Gutter Runner, Limited Lizardman Cheerleader, Blood Bowl Poster, Impact Miniatures Imp and Deadling Team, Impact Miniatures Snow Troll, Deathmatch BB Novel, and of course the winner gets a pick of the above prizes and the ultimate prize, the Underworld Cup trophy and a free ticket to next year's U-Con convention to defend their title!

Hope to see you all there!

Get your Official UNDERWORLD CUP 2006 T-shirt!

I made one as a test run recently. It turned out well and I will be wearing it on Saturday at the Chaos Cup. I will do my best to model it for you, fat-gamer style! Shocked

If you are attending the Underworld Cup in November and the Chaos Cup this weekend and are interested in a T-shirt, let me know at the Chaos Cup and give me your name and size. I will have them ordered and then give them out to people at the Underworld Cup. Price will be $13, payable at the Underworld Cup.

If you are going to the Underworld Cup, but NOT able to make it to the Chaos Cup, let me know here (reply post or PM) your name and size. Same thing, pickup and pay at Underworld.

Haven't pre-registered yet but the 3 of us are definitely planning on coming.

That is good news!

Xtreme will be there to take your friend's NAF sign ups if they choose to.

If you get a chance, shoot me a PM with you and your friend's real names and what teams they might want to play so I can add it to my own list I'm keeping.

You'd still want to pre-register on the www.ucon-gaming.org website at some point in the future to save $5.

Just a reminder to those interested to make sure you Pre-register at http://www.ucon-gaming.org

If you do not pre-register entrance to the convention will be $25 at the door instead of $20 via pre-registration on the website.

I have had quite a few people tell me they are coming, but as of yesterday, not too many had been pre-registered. Save 5 bucks guys!

Good to hear from you Darb. Bryan said he had a couple recruits. Are you playing Lizardmen?

Don't worry about making a fool of yourself. It will be a very laid back tournament with players that are interested in having a good time first and foremost.

Remember, now that we are on LRB5, even the veteran players still have to look up the rules now and then.

Just pre-registered for the event and both days. Turns out my friends Rich & Matt are coming with me and will be observing but won't be playing in the Blood Bowl tourny (they want to check it out and be free for the sealed deck Magic Tourny). So it's just me w/ my Tomb Kings team.

Post subject:
Glad to hear you are making it. But wait - Magic beat out Blood Bowl??? NOOOOOOOOOOO! Wink

ALSO:

Pre-registration will be closing Saturday night at 11:59pm Eastern time.

If you do not pre-register you will have to pay $30 ($25 for U-con weekend pass + $5 for Tournament) at the door. If you pre-register the U-con weekend pass is only $20 and you don't have to stand in any lines. We are starting early on Saturday morning so saving time will help.

Thanks to everyone who made it out to the Underworld Cup 2006!
We all had a great time and next year I will do my best to make it even better! Very Happy

Here are the results. Pictures to follow soon....

Xtreme and Da 40 Miners are the Underworld Cup 2006 Champions!!
He will also get a free ticket to U-Con next year to come back and defend the title! Cool

My game highlights...

GAME 1
First game was against my future league opponent, Bobby and his Dwarves. The night before I beat them in my first ever Streetbrawl game so he was looking for revenge. Unfortunately I was able to outrun the Dwarves and win this game 2-0. I'm sure he'll take it out on my in our next league!

GAME 2
In my game against the Loren Reavers he managed to score 3 TDs by Turn 5 of the first half! We had a one turn Riot that moved the turn marker back, then he intercepted a pass with a catcher and ran right in. By the way, I rolled double skulls 5 times in the first half! I got my revenge in the 2nd half however. I caused 5 blocking casualties (more if you count fouls and crowd). He could only setup 1 player on the field at that point. It was fun to see that but it did not matter, Sol still got a great 4-1 victory.

GAME 3
I met Milo Sharp for the first time. I remembered his name from when I first "got the internet" back in 1996 and the old BB mailing list. We had a blast in this game. It was very similar to my last game actually. Milo's Skaven scored 4 TDs rather quickly while I spent the rest of the game knocking the rats around. I was actually trying to score but his Storm Vermin would just not let that happen. I lost 0-4, but those 5 casualties helped me deal with the loss.

GAME 4
Against the Arid Ancients I may have won 4-0, but 2 of them were onside kicks I happened to have a great kick land near me and got perfect defense both times. Easy to out run the Khemri! This was Tony's first tournament and only his 4th or 5th game ever. He had a great attitude in all his games and was great fun to play. I'm sure next year or at future tournaments he will become tough competitor with his heavy hitting 4 Mummy line.

GAME 5
I got to play my brother Dean. He plays Norse. I play Norse. He scored 1 TD. I scored 1 TD. He caused 1 casualty. I caused 1 casualty. This game went back and forth with tons of trash talking and some "Roll a 1!" and "Come on Double Skulls!" chants. He had one chance toward the end of the game to score the winning TD with his Runner but I managed to make a few key dodges and get in his way and get him down. My MVP of the day was my bald lineman Grimarr who had Guard. Not only was he always in the right place at the right time, but he ended up catching the bouncing ball to end the game at the tie.

This was my first tournament as organizer and it was a great time. I'll admit I was overwhelmed early on, but thankfully my wife Heather stepped in to help me out with all the scorekeeping and results while I was able to play. We had 13 people show up, so I had to be prepared to play to make it an even 14. Next year I might not be so lucky because Heather wants in the tournament with her Pro Elves!

Thanks again to everyone for making it out to Ann Arbor on cold and snowy weekend. Smile

Although our gang from Chicago's CRUMBBL League didn't do so well, we all had an awesome time at the event. Luckily, Mike and Bobby got some of trivia questions correct and were able to bring some goodies back home in addition to the cool NAF ball for playing all 5 games. Next year we will be back (hopefully with more numbers) to try and take the Underworld Title away from the Indy crew and bring it to Chi-Town. Cool Cudos, Jon and Heather, for an excellent job on organizing and running this event, and saving the Underworld Cup from extinction. Wink

their site is:

they haven't set a date yet (this year was in june) but usually it is the "pinksteren" weekend which this year is on 27-28 may 2007. Best contact the organiser (MadHobbit) to be sure though.

Hi Tony,

I'm kinda figuring the tourney out as I go along. I'm hoping to have rules ready next week so I can get it NAF sanctioned.

The Zlurpee forum is where I'm posting some information right now:

http://www.zlurpeebowl.com

This is the actual thread for the posting: http://www.zlurpeebowl.com/Forums/viewtopic.php?t=342&start=30

One thing I'm thinking of doing is playing the "Eclipse" card on a random turn in round three, which could have some interesting results!
