North America - Deathbowl 2010 Update

jrock56 - Jun 18, 2010 - 09:57 AM
Post subject: Deathbowl 2010 Update
Just wanted to send out an update with regards to Deathbowl as I know a few of you were wondering already. We are waiting on final confirmation from the Legion but have tentatively booked it for October 23-24th.

We have been test playing the new LOS and it works out really well for all teams involved. Definitely levels the playing field between bash and speed teams. The sliding scale for attribute increases will be removed and attribute increases will return to there normal value to purchase. Those seem to be the major changes. It will still be 125 Team Rating as per the norm. We have yet to decide on the Year of the Slann *Bonus* for Slann teams but are leaning towards a Magic Item card either at a reduced cost or free. We will have everything finalized and posted shortly.

On a side note we may have an additional surprise at the tourney if all goes as planned so keep a lookout. Take it easy all,

Adam.

@ Rando, no problem hope your able to make it out.

@Clan-Skaven, Nurgle was actually test played already and seem to not be at such a disadvantage anymore, plus the Beast is a bi**h to get off the balls if there turn happens to be first. Wondering what kind of stuff you'll come up with this time...just no horn this time please Razz

I believe Joe and Glenn were discussing it last Deathbowl to level the playing field between speed and bash teams and not have to keep the sliding scale for attribute increases. In playing a few test games it does have a significant impact as it pretty much allows everyone the same opportunity to get to a ball and possibly score. Although it also allows people to defend a score quite well as all teams are forced to action immediately instead of the first turn being mostly just moving players forward.
Daggers - Jun 24, 2010 - 06:04 AM
Post subject:
Yeah, no more sitting back for that first turn waiting for everyone else to engage their opponenets. Now, the teams across the pitch can reach each other in one turn easily.

errr um seriously this team is shooting for one award only & that is best team award if my Nurgle team actually wins a game I'll be surprised!

If it makes you laugh or grouses you out, I'm happy! (it did its job!)

Okay Gents & Ladies, this year's Deathbowl is officially booked for October 23-24th at Montgomery Legion as usual. I tried posting the tourney but it appears it needs approval before being posted I believe. Rules have all been sorted out and just need to speak with Eric to finalize and post on the website so registration will be available. Everything else is well under way, and looking good (ie Dice, trophies, etc.)

Having a lot of fun brainstorming ideas with my bro on this, since it is my first time organizing a tourney. Love it and can't wait!!

Here is a quick over view of the rules in the meantime,

We will be using the CRP/LRB 6 set of standard rules, 125 Team Rating, All skill improvements including Stat increases will return to there normal costs, will be 3 1/2 minute timer for turns, The Line of Scrimmage will be changed (moved 4 squares ahead) or 10 squares from your endzone if you haven't played DB before. All other standard LOS rules still apply (3 players on the line, no more than 2 in the widezones). Pitch setup will change slightly as players from different teams are able to line up in each others widezones. On initial set-up a D6 roll will take place and the lowest roll will set-up there players first. Another D6 roll will take place and the highest roll will determine whose turn it is first. Is the fairest way to start the game off considering the new LOS. This will be repeated to start the 2nd Half of the game. If someone scores a TD you must roll a D6 for set-up only.

Illegal Procedures will be removed, but feel free to give a friendly or not so friendly reminder if someone continually disregards their turn marker!!! Very Happy After much deliberating we have decided to change the tie breakers as well
1. # of Wins
2. Record vs. Direct Opponent
3. Combined TD & Cas +/-
4. TD For
5. CAS For
6. If it ever gets to this point...take it out to the Parking Lot!!!

And lastly we have decided that The Year of the Slann will bring a Mage Priest's best efforts in ruining the opponents chances of winning, thus all Slann teams will be allowed to choose one Magic Item card per half to reflect the quality of Mages showing up for the event to aid in there races dominance over others.

Any questions feel free to ask, see you all soon.

Adam.

1. # of Wins.

Is this wins on the whole table?

No, just your straight win loss record. For instance if someone goes 2 wins-2 losses and is tied with another person that had 1 win-3 ties (without any extra table bonuses, or the same amount) they would both have 6 points in total but the person with the 2 wins would have the first tie breaker.

Now for this to come into play at deathbowl will be rare considering all the table bonuses and painting bonus that are accounted for.

You could classify me as a Dwarf maybe...but I'm definitely much larger than a halfling...besides that I'm not hairy enough to be in the halfling category Razz Plus the mental image was too funny Laughing

Teehee, and you are so accepting about the fact you didn't beat them. I think Taxal playing them for so long gave everyone the idea they were a weak team.

I have to admit I wasn't very gracious at the Sweetbun when you tied me at the end...think I yelled that it was a bunch of bullsh** or something along those lines. Sorry about that, was caught up in the moment ( as we all know I can be an emotional player, probably due to competitive sports all my life Very Happy ) I don't like losing, especially when it is to an inferior race...or at least you would think they are inferior at first glance. Like you said, others have not had the same fortune's playing halflings as you (Dan, Rod, Mark H, Leathan) but they seem to work for you, whatever the reason.
Daggers - Jul 05, 2010 - 10:47 AM
Post subject:
Hahaha, wasn't gracious.....haha, thats an understatement. ;P No worries, I know you well enough to know your rants are harmless. I was just happy I induced one, they are entertaining when you don't win like that.

I do seem to have better luck than others with flings, and I will totally admit they are based on luck, but there are certain things that give me a better chance of not losing. Someday, someone may get the courage too challenge my title. Until then I will enjoy not giving people an easy with this "inferior" race.

Hey all,

I spoke to a few of you last weekend at Lakeside but I wanted to follow up before we start placing orders for things. Originally we wanted to make it a surprise at the tourney but have decided to offer people the opportunity to place orders, so to speak for custom Deathbowl boards. Mark, Glenn and myself have been discussing the idea for awhile and have the opportunity to create foldable custom Deathbowl pitches at a very good price that will be comparable in material to the regular Bloodbowl pitch you receive when you purchase the game. The boards will most likely cost approx $40 each. If people have a genuine interest in purchasing one from us they can PM me ahead of time so we have an idea how many we should order. We are currently looking at 10-12 for the tourney itself, but would be willing to extend the same offer to some of our fellow bloodbowlers if they are serious about purchasing them from us. I don't want to order a bunch extra and have people back out last minute. If you can get back to me once you've had a chance to think on it, it would be much appreciated gents. Take it easy and I'll keep you posted as things progress.

Adam.

No, definitely not. It is still 16 squares from LOS to Endzone. It allows for every team to have a chance to score in 2 turns (Pushing 4 squares however) The only possible one turn score is with Throw Team-Mate and even that would be somewhat difficult to pull off

The field is one square narrower than a regular pitch Rando. Don't worry we had the same question when we were thinking about the custom pitches Very Happy Makes for a smaller passage for squishy teams Wink

The pitch size is a hold over from the 2nd edition rules (i.e. the foam pitch) which the DeathBowl rules were originally written for. Also, by being one square narrower it make the total 'distance' from endzone-to-endzone the same as the regular 2-player version; which would be a more difficult change to get accustomed to than the reduced width.

No problem, I originally did this to understand the new LoS rules and to use some drafting programs that I have not had the chance to in a long time.

I also edited the rulebook to include the new LoS diagram.

Hey tokkan,

no worries about being new to the game, we always welcome new players to the game. I was actually speaking to Zap last night and he mentioned he knew a few guys that he had just introduced to the game. He mentioned you were going to get together Wed evenings at the GW store in Bayshore, I'll probably make it out to a few of those as well.

Playing with a race you are familiar with is definitely a good idea when starting out. Keep in mind Deathbowl is a 4 Player version of the game instead of the traditional 2 player game. I'll put you down for one of the Deathbowl pitches as well. I don't know what info you have access to with regards to rules, rosters and such but if you need any help finding anything or just have any questions in general feel free to ask. If I don't know the answer myself I'm sure I know a few people that do. Take it easy, hope to see you on the pitch in the near future,

Going with a team like orcs is a good idea for your first time playing in Death bowl. They have good staying power and are not difficult to play. With this year being the year of the Slann I would say try to learn abit about the Slann and how to stop them. Each year there are an average of 5 of us that bring the theme team for that year and you are most likely going to be seeing them on each table for each round.

No worries man, hope you have a good time at the other tourney and we'll hopefully see you in MTL in November or for the CCKO in January. (I wouldn't bring those Santa shorts or Robin Hood hat across the border with you though, you might get branded an illegal alien and sent home Laughing )

Rules Question: The rulebook says that each ball may be passed & handed-off one per turn. Does that mean each team is allowed the standard 1 throw action per turn unless they posses both balls, or does each team have 2 throw actions? [think of a goblin team with a bombardier and Throw-Teammate]

I remember a question like this coming up before, more about handoff-pass-handoff-pass play with one ball. But I can't remember the final decision. I think each team is allowed two pass and hand-off actions per turn, but no ball can be passed or handed-off more than once. But I don't see why a goblin team can't throw a bomb and a teammate in a turn. It would be the same as a halfing team throwing two teammates with two different treeman in a turn.

Hey Eric,

Mark has it right essentially. It works out to having 2 passing and handoff actions per turn but the same ball can not be passed or handed off twice in the same turn. I don't see a problem with a Bombardier throwing a bomb and a Troll throwing a teammate in the same turn either. Although the same team member cannot be thrown more than once in the same turn.

Also thank you for fixing the link in the tourney section to go to the Tourney Website. Don't know why it wasn't working prior but I did notice that problem as well.

As for bringing Slann... if Glenn, I or both of us end up playing we may both take Slann as he has 2 teams I believe. If one of us doesn't play Taxal, I'm sure Glenn would be willing to let you use one of his Slann teams at the tourney. The more Slann teams the better right? I think Mike Olsen will probably bring his Slann as well as he has signed up already. In fact if there are a few that want to try Slann I would be willing to change to another team even if I am playing so that others can represent the "Year of" team.

Sorry guys, the Deathbowl boards are not gonna happen this year. We had a whole problem with the board images being printed and had to restart from scratch. We ran out of time for getting them printed, so instead of supplying an inferior product, we decided to do it right and get them out for next year.

On a better note, now that I know what the printers are capable of and require, depending on interest, I may print other types of boards out (ie regular BB boards, 7's or Streetbowl boards, etc etc).

Anyways, I am sorry this didn't work out, but I didn't see the point in having people pay for something that was professional quality (and really, for $35-$40 a board, these things did not look worth the price). So be ready for next year.

Yeah, unfortunately Mark has it right but they will definitely be done in time for next year's tourney. The image I did all the work on was too small and once blown up would not be nearly the quality that we were looking to produce. On a positive note I've spoken to someone who has a better program to work on the image I had created and can better produce the results we were looking for image wise in order to have them printed. Should be awesome once we can get the proper quality image to the printing company. Counting on a much better product for all of you next year will let you know as it progresses.

Other than that everything else is good to go and prepared for this weekend.

@ Mark D give me a shout if you want to pick up your dice sometime this week or I can bring them to the tourney as well. Works out to $45 total after (cost, shipping, border fees)

We wanted something that can be used for multiple years at the tournament. If we do that it becomes exclusive to the theme we are using that one year.

Just a sidenote to the boards, the ones we currently have. They've been modified and improved upon as well to go along with the new line of scrimmage rules. So not getting the new boards done isn't a total loss, just took a lot more work to get the previous ones modified in time.

Will discuss with Glenn as I don't think that has ever come up at Deathbowl, considering the work that people put in when they do the "Year of" themes. I know having won a couple Best Team awards with Glenn's Norse team how uncomfortable I was with excepting an award for something I had nothing to do with. I did relay the awards and prizes to Glenn but felt weird in accepting them to begin with. We may do something similar to what Pete did at Lakeside but I'll get back to you shortly.

I am bringing Eggballs Slann team, which has already won trophies. I am always on the fence about this issue. As long as the person who created the team gets the trophy in the end, I don't see the problem. That discussion could be left for another time.

I would never accept a trophy for the same team twice. But that is just me. But I do also enforce that at the Q'ermitt - the same team will never win the Best Team award more than once.

As for accepting an award when you don't attend.... I am on the fence with that one. Not that I was really considering it in this case. My frogs are nice, but not sure whether I would consider them Best Team worthy.

My personal opinion is once you win with a team, that team should be retired from said award. Unless you go to lets say, the world cup, well no one over there has seen your stuff so if you get nominated, then by all means go for it. I won with my Vamp team last Death Bowl and from now on I will not accept any nominations even if it is a new tournament for them. Its my opinion and by no means is it law.

The 2 rules that make the most sense are that the person whose team is nominated must be in attendance at that tournament to accept the award. The other being that they cannot have already won the award at that tournament with the same team.

@ Taxal, with regards to your Vamp team I would think that at other tournaments other than Deathbowl it would be acceptable for them to win best team again. If you prefer that not be the case that's up to you but from an organizer standpoint I don't see it being a problem. Reason being that each tournament has it's own voting and players will vote differently seeing as there will be some different players at each tournament. Granted the core group of us that attend is largely the same year to year.

You know, one of the reasons that we started the whole "Best Team" award was because the same people were winning the "Best Painted" award at every tournament (with the same team). Once you have won it, then accept that you made an amazing team and don't feel the need to monopolize the prize at every other tournament!

I totally agree with you in the sense of "monopolizing the prize" as there is a line that needs to be drawn before it becomes excessive.

Having been a bridesmaid for Best Team maybe about as many times as Talons has been bridesmaid for 1st overall, I would be disappointed to have come out for a tournament after working on a team only to see the award go to someone who wasn't even there. Having run painting contests at Games Workshop, we would ask that the person be present when the award was given as there would be a lot of people who would come out and wait to see if they won. Finding out you came in second to someone who dropped off their mini two days before and wasn't there to collect would be a bit of a slap in the face. Not to mention that we would have to hold onto the prize for who knows how long before the winner would collect.

I agree with having the winner present at the tournament to accept the trophy. You have to be there for every other award (except the Wooden Spoon... Tristan), so why not this one?

Regarding winning Best Team with the same team at more than one tournament, I'm not opposed to that as I think it was mentioned that different tournaments may have different criteria to win. Though I would think that if I ever do win a best team, I would only feel right winning again with something else. Though that would be to try and prove that I'm not a one trick pony.

Just my two cents. Oh, and after thinking about it, I don't think that anyone could be a Blood Bowl bridesmaid as many times as Talons.

the one aspect people seem to be overlooking is that this whole "monopolizing" best team award was occuring afew years back, when it was simply "best painted" and there were less coaches coming out to tournaments. I would say the caliber of painting and conversions had drastically increased in quality even in the few years since I have started playing in tournaments. Since then, people have been creating some pretty awesome teams and the occurance of repeat winners has decreased drastically because of this.

When I won best painted at Sweetbun I was ecstatic because I had put alot of effort into them. If Mike Olson had brought his Slann, and were disqualified because they had won at another tournament, and I won instead, I would not be as excited because I would want to know I beat him fair and square, not on a technicality.

I agree with Adam, the winner should be in attendance and not have won at that specific tournament previously. But eliminating a team because it won the trophy at another tournament, to me, just means that the winner of that tournament had less competition to win it.

Well put! It is for this reason why I have put effort into improving my painting over the years. I would love to hang a trophy over Spazz's head for winning best team over him! I don't want him disqualified for winning at another tourney. That would take away from my eventual victory over him. You can bet it's coming Spazz!

Fully agree with the winner has to be there aspect. Just something that I wanted to bring up and did not mean for it to turn into a big discussion, but at least we are all getting it out and organized. I fully agree with people winning multiple times with the same team as long as its at a different tournament. For myself once I win with a team I would rather not be up for it again like I said, especially with in the core tournaments in Ontario/Quebec.

Well. technically we are not all in agreement. Daggers is saying that one team should be allowed to win at more than one tournament, but not the same one twice. Dan agrees with that, but says that it is his preference to not submit his for more than one award, and I say that it should not be considered for more than one award.

I don't know what changed. I was always of this mind, and if you tell me otherwise then then only thing that changed was your memory! Razz

So the Deathbowl has come to an end and all the results are in. Thank you to everyone who came out to the tourney, I had a great time watching all of you duke it out over the weekend. Being my first time running things with Glenn everything went smoothly and good times seemed to be had by all. Some of the games were pretty intense all weekend. Hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did and will hopefully see you in MTL next month or @ CCKO in January.

As for Standings/Winners...

1st Place- Leathan (bit of a surprise after losing last game but snuck in the Most CAS on the table to secure the victory)
2nd Place- Stephan (Won his last game against Leathan, but lost out on Most TD Bonus at the end to finish slightly behind)
3rd Place- Nate (had a dominant last performance to vault his rankings into a podium position)
Most TD- Peter M (Finished with 8 TD to win ahead of 6 players tied with 6 TD)
Most CAS- Nate (Finished with 14 Casualties, 5 ahead of the next closest person)
Best Team- Mark H (Finally getting off the "Bridesmaid" label to win his coveted award)
Most Improved- Stephan (After getting last place aka "Bitch Stick" finishing just behind the tourney champ, well deserved)
Most Sporting- Colin
Brass Ass- Rob K
Best Defence- Rob P (Came down to third tie breaker with Stephan to decide the winner, fitting considering the Bitches Alliance that took place between these two Wink )
Bitch Stick- Dan C (Odd considering Slann also finished in 1st place)

Congratulations to all the winners, a job well done. Thank you all again for coming out. Full results will be posted soon and I'll get all the rankings in asap. Take care everyone.

Well, just wanted to put a shout out to Glenn, Adam and Mom for the awesome tourney/food. Glenn thanks for the hospitality, and Alex for putting up with us all. Eric, many thanks for the ride, I really appreciate that.

Now on to the good stuff...
Zon Zon Inc worked its magic as both Stephane and myself won 2 nothing. I tried to stick it to Stephane and allow Lethan to tie the score at one, but the frogs weren't up to the task. A failed 3 plus catch, resulted in Stephane scoring his second TD of the game, ending Zon Zon Inc. With the aide of my new puppet Lethan, I was able to put the rock in the endzone on turn 8, ending Stephane's dreams of Deathbowl bliss.

On table 2, major developments were brewing....sitting in a prime position, Eric needed to play all out against Nate to achieve his dreams of a podium finish. In all his efforts, Eric fell a little short in his quest, as Nate made a huge jump from sixth place to take 3rd place....thanks Eric.

So, Lethan won first on tiebreakers over Stephane, with Nate in 3rd. I finished in 4th, Tristan 6th, Peter 7th and Eric in 8th.

Overall, an awesome tourney as always, great food, fun and a stunning knockout in the UFC.

The new line of scrimmage has definitely changed the game, Deathbowl is now a game of pure chaos......right from the start.
