North America - Team Canada for NAF 2011 World Cup 18. 19, 20 Nov 2011

Post subject: Team Canada for NAF 2011 World Cup 18. 19, 20 Nov 2011
The dates for the 2011 World Cup are November 18, 19 and 20th 2011.

Registration update

We have two team registered for Canada. The precise make up of the players on these teams is not set in stone. But right now they are all Eastern players.

Flights update

Costs known/unknown

Tournament entry = 111 Euros = due February 22nd
Accomodation = 20-100 Euros per night = 30-140$/night
Flights = Ottawa: 1000
Montreal: 1100
Toronto: 800

Meals = $
Beer = $?
Total = at least $1500 before spending money.

I want to organise at least one team to represent Canada at next year's event in Amsterdam.
Possibly even Eastern and Western Canada teams.

I will post more details here as they become available but do send me a PM or email if you are even slightly interested in taking part.

I am doing this now as cost/time off from work are the two limiting factors for the majority of Canadian players. Costs can be reduced by booking things in advance.

I am personally very committed to ensuring I attend.

Cheers,
Joe

Well, I would definitely entertain the idea of going to the world cup, just need to find out some of the logistics before I make the ultimate decisions.

If everyone is serious about going to the World Cup in November of 2011, I will have to rethink starting a tourney in London. Keep me posted, on any updates guys, I could just set things up for a summer tourney????

I could turn this World Cup event into a tour of europe. We have discussed going on vacation there already, so it is not out of the question.

basically with the tournament on the 18th ot the 20th we would need to leave canada on the 16th and we would arrive in amsterdam on the 17th and fly out on the 21st.

So a minimum of a 6 day trip and the flights will likely be cheaper if you do 7 days.

For myself it will most likely be leave the 16th late at night (overnight flight) stay at girlfriends family the 17th, then hotel for us two the 18th and 19th. Then stay and visit till the 25th. So as you guys decide which hotel you stay at I would like to know so I can get a room for those two nights. Going to be some legendary partying at night time........

I'll try to give you some tips for lowering the costs in amsterdam.

I know that the french coaches are going to rent some houseboats (can accomodate 6-8 persons, should be 20 Euro per night per person, but also allows you to cut costs on the food (kitchen available) ). The only problem is that I'm not sure how close to the venue the boats will be, but given the price of the tourney, the lodging at the tourney venue will probably be way more expensive.

Don't know if it is official yet, but the cost of the tourney should be around 100 - 150 Euro, and not including breakfast / diners.

Dam is expensive, that's a big downside of the world-cup this time. I guess you should put aside at least 1200 dollars.

And it is 6 coaches per team (West cost rules !!! )
Notorious_jtb - Nov 04, 2010 - 07:11 PM
Post subject:
Cool tips Lizzi!

I had not thought of houseboats.

There are canals pretty close to the Rai venues but don't know if they are houseboat suitable.
It would be ok to be right downtown and travel out to the venue anyway, short trip on the tram/cab.

Budgeting is the key thing.
Interesting news on the 6 per team!

A lot will depend on the team creation and advancement. Nurgle does make a lot of sense. If I am to be the #1 in the world, then I should give people a chance to take a shot at it in the world arena.

But Norse is the more dependable team. So for representing Team Canada that may be the better choice.

Like I said, will need to see the TV of the tourney and skill advancements. That will dictate it for me.

Thanks for the info Spazz. There may be some serious negotiations within the team if the 1 of each race per team restriction is in place at this World CUp too.

Don't worry, either way you cannot be defeated by the americans and aussies, and you'll probably struggle against the euros Wink

FYI: last tourney rule:

team TV 110, 1 skill aded after each game (so 8 skills at the end of the tourney).

Flights update
Currently flights can be booked only until the 5th of October 2011. This means it will be about 6 weeks (roughly Christmas time) when we can book the flights for the days we will need. That will be when we can determine costs. Right now the flights seem to be around $1000.

Costs known/unknown

Tournament entry = 100-150 Euros = 140-200$
Accomodation = 20-100 Euros per night = 30-140$/night
Flights = $1000
Meals = $
Beer = $?
Total = at least $1500 before spending money.

So Lizzardcore has a good point.

The flight prices are different from different cities.

The best I can see for the begining of October 2011 right now are:

Ottawa: 1000
Montreal: 1100
Toronto: 800

Advantage the Soft Southern Ontarians!

Good to see such interest in the WC. Just wondering if there are any coaches in western Canada who are thinking of attending, maybe we could get 2 Team Canadas (East and West). I know the Thunderbowl in Vancouver has a large league and a league has started up again in Calgary (I think there's one in Edmonton too). Awesome!

Depending on what happens we don't have to be restrictive, a mixed team or teams would be awesome too. But this could be a great event to get the national scene connected in Canada.

I was the one who ran the league and tourney in Red Deer at a gaming club that closed down last year (interest in BB had been dwindling at the club a while before it closed down so I wasn't running a league at that thime, more people into WH and 40K, which must have been dwindling too or else they wouldn't have closed down)

Anyway, good to hear that there are plans for a Team Canada from the West. Not sure if I will be able to afford to go as my union is just entering contract negotiations, so will know in a couple of months (but the outlook isn't very hopefull because of the world economy).

I am not worried just yet about having too many players Smile

But team selection may also involve race limits, so that is why I asked what race people want to play.

If it does come down to selecting players I am tempted to do it on a regional basis. This makes sense as we may have Western and Eastern teams anyway, so we could add a central team to the mix.

But I am only going to worry about team selection when over 6 people have booked their flights!!!!

Then, having just returned from Canada in his latest adventure to save Earth from the most recent attempt to resurrect the Ziox, Zap Rowsdower belches out, "I'm with you, too!"

Basically, I'm saying that I'm in. My OSAP is almost in and I’m pretty sure that I can swing it. Ohh OSAP (Ontario Student to Amsterdam Project), where would I be without you?

May I suggest that if we would like to organize a team uniform that we all invest in Canadian Tuxedoes! Nothing strikes fear into the hearts of opponents like the sight of a Canadian in his Denim armour.

you should plan the teams as well (required for the registration).

I can tell you that a lot of europeans are waiting to see how many slots from US/Canada/Australia are left unused, so be on top of it !

Yeah, because once February hits our reserved slots will not be reserved anymore. And Spain alone has tried to submit 10 teams with only 7 slots. So you know if you take to long, our slots will be lost.

And I think we should wear flannel shirts, with long johns and Pete's baseball socks as a uniform.

It may be that some further people are not able to go but I am very hopeful of getting at least 1 legit team Canada out there.

Hey Eric,

So signed Canada up for two teams so far (see below). I think we should get at least one team to go out of this lot below. I am sure we can change the precise people in each group etc depending on what happens. So far I just went for geography sort of, this is not meant to be a final split.

Flights should be available to book now so we can finalise the stuff during January for those with funds/time free for the trip.

Cheers,

Not at all jtb, in fact I would gladly let you represent Orcs seeing as your the highest ranked coach with them in CA. I was just throwing it out there as Norse, Skaven, Chaos Dwarf are solid options for those 3 players to take as they have had good success with them. I'm flexible with what I take and would even consider Undead or Necro if necessary.

Hey Leathan, that's a different 3 teams than I'm used to seeing you play although you have played Amazon before against me. With the rules that I read for the World Cup Undead and Zons would be pretty strong choices for sure. Lizards would be a little more challenging with only 3 regular skills to start with. As they develop they can become pretty strong but initially can be somewhat vulnerable. Just my 2 cents of course, whatever works best for you is what we want you to bring Very Happy Can't wait now that I'm back in!! See you guys soon

So are you going to get a plane ticket for your gnome too, or are you going to sneak him through in your suitcase?

I want to book my flight and room. Return economy on KLM out of Montreal is now $938 all taxes and fees in, if booked soon. Price has gone up $30 in the last few weeks probably due to fuel. I can't sleep in a hostel, how about the 3 star hotel recommended by NAF ? Depart wed 16th return tue 22nd. Discuss.

Sounds like a decent plan runki!
I would suggest the length of stay you chose as well.
I don't want a hostel either, three star not a bad option. I have stayed in a bunch of hotels for work here, although they might be too pricy.
I am thinking we need 3 twin rooms, runki and L3athanlK, jrock56 and twodiceblock, leaving JTb and Zap. You don't snore right Zap?

I will do some research on the rooms, but those flights should be snagged before any more oil related political stuff happens.

Length of trip sounds about right and flights will be booked as soon as we possibly can. Not down with a hostel either but what about the Houseboats that were mentioned earlier in this thread by Laurent, he said they were approx 20 euros per person a night which is pretty cheap and they held 6-8 people each. Another option is staying 3 per room, will also cut on costs. The houseboats he was saying had kitchens as well which could be useful. Anyhow I'm down for whatever everyone decides on.

@JTB, You may want to consider a few of the guys from southern Ontario that have said they were going since the beginning before giving away all the slots on team 2. I believe Spazz, Talons, Anthony TBBF, and possibly Peter were all solid that they were planning on attending. Don't want you to jump the gun and have them be excluded if they were still planning on attending. Don't know the best way of contacting them to confirm but that was the last info I had.

What is the name of your league that you play in Ontario? Are all you guys members of the same league or do you just play in tournaments together? We only went with Team Thunderbowl as a name because all 6 of the guys going on this team are registered league members. If they all weren't we probably would have went with Canwest or whatever as we had members on our team who were from Calgary let's say, or something like Blame Canada.

Many of the same group participate in each others tournies throughout the year though. I was thinking of something relating to every other contries perception of us living in Igloos with the eskimos and such, however most of them are pretty corny which isn't what I want.

If we did the whole mohawk idea with some team canada jerseys or something we could do "Freaks of Nature", Tundra Hawks, Frigid Canucks, tons of ideas for names just need others input as well to come to a consensus decision.

Unfortunately I'm one of the few in my league who surf all the Blood Bowl sites - well, mostly my own, this one and TFF, so I doubt most of them will read this, but I will bring it up with the crew. We are just in the preliminary stages of setting everything up so this would be as good a time as any to bring this up. I still have to pay for our tickets. Embarassed

But yeah I'd love to set this up and finally match the pseudos online to the actual faces. Having the opportunity to party with our blood brothers from the East and finally meeting that crew is going to be great. Looking forward to it. Joe has my email but in case you don't it's thunder-bowl@hotmail.com.

Oh I understand - I went through a whole Halloween party explaining that, and then of course I went through the next 2-3 months with bleach blonde hair - going from goth to boy band over night. Still a fun costume though.

Jerseys are already in the works. One of our design guys in the club is on the job, and my Local is going to sponsor our shirts so it's going to be pretty sweet. We can obviously afford jerseys, but getting some sponsorship makes it more a proper team jersey eh? Looking forward to seeing them.

Many of us finished accomplishing our team goal of finishing above .500 for the tourney. Completely differing play styles throughout the World but we made adjustments throughout and came out pretty successful in the end! Made many new friends and contacts throughout the tourney that will only help broaden the Bloodbowl community both here and worldwide. That in itself made going that much greater of an experience. Hope we are able to have a few teams represent at the next World Cup as it is an experience like no other we have ever been to!
