Hear Ye! Hear Ye!

Annoucing the FIRST EVER Blood Bowl Tournament to be held in the great state of Rhode Island (that's in the USA for those of you who don't know) on Saturday, March 5, 2005!

This will be a four-match, one-day Swiss-style tournament. I hope to start at 10am sharp and be completed by 10pm. I know that's alot of Blood Bowl in one day, but what do we care?

The tournament site is the University of Rhode Island - about 75 minutes south of Boston, and about 90 minutes southeast of Hartford. Very easy to get to by car or by train (the train station is 1.5 miles from campus).

Full information about the tournament can be found at:

http://icebox.iits.uri.edu/bb.html

Email or PM me if you hav eany questions!

*cough* *cough* ditch the citadel minis only rule please Very Happy

a couple of other things. Can halflings have two treemen? from your Big Guys section it seems to limit it to one despite the LRB allotment of 2. How much are extra re-rolls with the chef? I'll post more as I think of it Very Happy

I also recommend dropping the painted part. just award 2 pionts to every player wich has an fully painted team.
Opus - Jan 03, 2005 - 12:16 PM
Post subject:
Melifaxis:

Yes - you can have two Treemen with the 'flings. They wouldn't be worth playing otherwise (and I *like* Flings). Smile

Ethrylain:

I was toying with the idea of completely dropping the "Best Painted Team" award anyway. The only reason I want teams to be painted is so that you can tell when a player is prone / stunned.

Other suggestions? Keep those cards and letters coming! Smile
Melifaxis - Jan 03, 2005 - 01:13 PM
Post subject:
How does the paint tell you when they're stunned? I think most usually put the min face up or face down. Face up is prone and face down is stunned.

Painted mini's look a lot better, but if you're going to let unpainted play you might want to enforce colored base rings or numbering. Once players start having skills its important to have no doubt about who is who. Very Happy
Ethrylain - Jan 03, 2005 - 01:36 PM
Post subject:
The only requirement we have is that each miniature is numbered so they can easly recognised and theres no confusion.

And why should you drop the best painted team award? To some its more fun to paint then play. Keeping the award will bring more players. Personaly I spend hours painting my teams, and I'm always happy to be nominated for the best painted award(i've never won it). It adds to the tournament.
Opus - Jan 03, 2005 - 08:04 PM
Post subject:
If the face of the player is painted, it's really easy to tell prone versus stunned. Smile And I agree that numbers are absolutely mandatory.

Right now, a Best Painted Team award would be given *if* I can come up with enough prizes. Smile

How much is usually charged for entry into a tournament of this nature? I was thinking about $10 for NAF members, $15 for non-NAF members, and $20 for new people who wanted to join the NAF ($10 to play, $10 for membership). Is that too much?

scoring recommendations: after attending a few tournies with similar scoring systems--I recommend:
bonus pts: loss by only 1 pt: 10 pts
caused 1 more cas than your opponent: +5 pts
caused 2 or more cas than your opponent: +10pts
won by 2+: +5pts
won by 3+: +10pts

it puts cas on par with scoring and prevents a random fluke cas from giving opponent 10 bonus points. 5 is enough for a one cas diff.

Also gives more incentive to run up more scoring with the 3+.

I'd probably pay no more than $20 for a one day tourney, but I think most would find the range you're giving ok. The Brouhaha was $25 for a two day event. But, you have to cover your expenses, so that's what really drives it. Cost of location, prizes, etc.

See - that's the beauty of this whole thing - the room is FREE. Smile I want to make sure that the fee is small enough to entice people to come, but big enough so that I'm not losing alot of money buying prizes.

Anyone have suggestions for prizes? Base Vampire / Ogre team direct from GW?
Melifaxis - Jan 04, 2005 - 12:11 PM
Post subject:
I would go with the new skaven and dark-elf (advanced order now for shipment in about 2 weeks) and some of the new minis from last year. Ogre team is a lot of money on one prize, but I'd be proud to get it.

If this is an annuall event I will be able to make it next year. I will be traveling to NY then and would be able to make it to the event then.

Sounds interesting, but it's a long way for a one-day tourney. Any other Canadians going (preferably from Ottawa/Montreal/Kingston area)?
Opus - Jan 12, 2005 - 07:48 PM

Shadewe - I *hope* to make this an annual event, probably around the same weekend. Keep your fingers crossed.

Garth - I think you're right. I would estimate it to be between a 6-7 hour drive from Montreal to URI. I would be more than happy to look for some place for you to crash if you are still interested, but it *is* a long way for a one-day tourney. Smile

Melifaxis - I'm trying to drub up as much local interest as possible. I just haven't gotten any firm confirmations from my regular group. They're scared of me. Smile

That Opus is a Star Player from 2nd Edition. His stats (if I remember correctly) are ST 3, MV 6, AG 4, AV 8 with Block, Dodge, Catch, and Big Nose. Big Nose allows him to get +3 movement while playing in a Blizzard, but -3 movement while playing under Swealtering Heat. I never got a chance to use him, unfortunately. Sad

Melifaxis: do you know of any one else from your neck of the woods who is thinking of attending? I'm up to 4 coaches now. Smile

I think you'll all be happy to know that I've been able to LOWER the registration fee for the Rhody Rampage!!!!!

ONLY $5 for NAF members !!!!!
($10 for non-NAF members, and $15 to join NAF at the site)

I'm still trying to justify the trip. What are the local accommodations like there?
Opus - Feb 11, 2005 - 07:14 AM

Garth - I can check into a number of places for you to stay. Most would be about 15 minutes north of campus (simply because anything closer to campus would be severely overpriced). My rough guess is that a one-night room would be around $70. Give me a day or two, please. Smile

I got the OK from my wife (she wants to go down for the trip) BUT I have another problem -- no passport. I hear the border is extra tight as of Jan. 1, 2005 and I won't have time to get one... (but I will try)

Garth - that's fabulous! Is there anything I can do to help? Do you still want lodging info? How many people/rooms?
garth - Feb 20, 2005 - 08:42 PM

I will look into the passport issue -- but I don't want to hold my breath. I hear the border is really locked up tight. As for lodging, yes, for two people.

Garth - the Budet Inn in North Kingstown, RI has a room available for both Friday and Saturday for $57 per night. This Inn is about 20 minutes from the URI campus, and directly in MY path from my house to URI. I would be more than happy to pick you up and drop you off if you wanted to let your wife have the car for the day.

Here's a link to their reservation page if you want it:

http://travel.wwte1.com/pub/agent.dll?qscr=dspv&itty=new&from=m&shtl=1&htid=896150

If you need any other information, please let me know. (And I hope that this trip is worth it for you.) Smile

According to Canada Customs, I DON'T need a passport (as was previously threatened by both governments) so that hurdle is overcome. I am still leaning toward attending -- sorry that I can't be more positive for you!

As for the Budget Inn, thanks for the info. Unfortuantely, the link you gave me was for your 'account' ("My Travel Highlights" -- with no info., don't worry!) Can you send me the web address for the Inn itself? Thanks!

BTW, I will be at the Canadian Open in Toronto this weekend. Phew! Lots of BB!

I would like to personally thank Melifaxis and the other 4 attendees of the Rhody Rampage. Although the event was small and we started late and we only played 3 matches, I think I can safely say that a goo dtime was had by all. Especially Ogun the Flesh Golem, who scored his very first touchdown at my expense. Smile

Bill Hincks' Dwarves, the Bugman's Brewers emerged victorious. PHil's skaven were second. I believe Mike's high elves were next followed by dark elves, my necros, and then Mark's norsemen with the wooden spoon.

My suspcion is March 3-5. The weekend after is the beginning of our Spring Break. I haven't had contact with any of the "new" officers of the URI Gaming Club, so I may run this event completely outside of the Con, which would give me much more flexibility for a date. Does anyone have any suggestions?
