North America - Chaos Cup 2003

Post subject: Chaos Cup 2003
I just received the GamesDay insert from the latest issue of the US White Dwarf.

Am I misreading the schedule, or is Chicago's GamesDay only Saturday? I thought GamesDay is usually 2 days? Additionally, the schedule for the Chaos Cup seems like there will be very little time to spend at GamesDay itself, much less time to spend admiring the painting talents of others. Does anyone know if this schedule is set in stone? The time table they used at the Blood Bowl in Nottingham seemed to allow much more time for socializing and gawking at minis.

I think Games Day is usually just one day, at least it is here in Toronto.

Chicago was only one day last year. The first day of the Chaos Cup is going to be held at the Chicago Battle Bunker (last time I checked).

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that the Saturday schedule in the GamesDay pamphlet does not really provide all that much time to attend GamesDay itself.

Set-up: 9:30-10:00
Game 4 10:00-12:15
Break 12:15-1:15
Game 5 1:15-3:30
Award 4:30-5:00

Looking at that schedule, there are only two 1 hour periods to check out the rest of GamesDay. And as pathetic as this may sound, I'm going to have to spend part of one of those hours eating lunch.

If they used the Blood Bowl's Sunday schedule they could potentially have the Awards ceremony completed by 3:00 PM leaving a nice 2 hour block at the end of the day to enjoy the rest of GamesDay.

Honestly though, I'm making a bigger fuss out of this than I should be. I am primarily attending the Chicago GamesDay to participate in the Chaos Cup. However, I've never attended a GamesDay before and I'd really like to take in the sights and the atmosphere.

Try this darthnoir, go to both the GenCon Bowl in July and the Chaos Cup in August.

GenCon lasts 3 1/2 days with the BB tournament only buring 1 1/2 days, and you'll see pretty much everything you'd see at the Games Day and a heck of a lot more at GenCon over the rest of the time.

http://www.blood-bowl.net/Gencon.html

Then you can go the Chaos Cup and not feel like you missed anything since you already saw it at GenCon ... Very Happy

I am very tempted to attend the Gencon tourney as well (after Nottingham, I've been severely bitten by the tournament bug now). I take it that the Gencon tournament is not sold out yet?

Tickets go on sale April 14th at http://www.gencon.com

The Chaos Cup has 48 slots with 47 being sold. The GenCon Bowl will have 80 slots and 1st prize is free admission to Games Day Chicago and the Chaos Cup ... which if you already had tickets ... I guess we'll get creative ... Laughing

Anyway, the 48th slot is supposed to be reserved for the GenCon Bowl tournament winner but with them only one week apart, it might have limited appeal unless that tournament sells out in a heartbeat.

They are already advertising the Chaos Cup for GW:
http://www.games-workshop.com/news/us/events/GamesDay2003/Special_Events/bloodbowl.htm

GenCon ads will be in White Dwarf also I'm told ... should be interesting to see how it all works ... or my fear ... doesn't work ... Laughing

Is there any word if the 48 slots will be expanded if given enough demand, like what happened with the Blood Bowl?

They said they might try ... but the problem is that 48 players is really all they have space for this year. GW said it would try to add more if it sells out but they cannot promise.

On a sidenote, I just found out that the GenCon tournament could in theory allow up to 140 coaches if it sells out the 80 slots. It will be fun seeing what the US market for this is compared to UK tournament.

I am up waaaaay to early (6:00 AM PST) trying to get GamesDay Chicago tickets and the all important Chaos Cup 2003 entry. However, all I'm getting right now are busy signals Sad

Anyone else have any luck getting through?

I got in after about a 15-20 hold. I thought it was interesting that they were allowing multiple tickets purchases per call for the Chaos Cup, only because the size of the tournament is relatively small - perhaps this has changed.

Did you get my e-mail? Hope that helped.

Question:
Are you a complete idiot (from a chance of winning perspective) if you don't hire a star player in a tourney? It seems that way to me...

yes thanks got the email and it was interesting reading.

But why is it called swiss?

I don't think so. You can play Dwarves and Undead without the need for a Star Player, for example. (Slayers can handle just about anything; a Mummy is practically a Star Player in its own right.)

I think the right coach can win a tournament with a specialty team like Amazons or Norse without Star Players. But Humans...you probably need a Star Player. Skaven...you probably can't win anyway.

What about Lizardmen (only because I'm painting them now) or Chaos Dwarves (my favorite)?

No problem. Regarding Lizardmen, I don't think their official Star Players are worth it. And I think all that ST and Dodge and Stunty can give an opponent plenty of trouble, so I think Lizardmen can compete in a tourney.

Regarding Chaos Dwarves, I'd go with Hthark. Well, I wouldn't, you understand, but, ah...you have a better chance with him than without him, definitely.

What, how, er.... When did THAT picture get in there Wink
Actually, Linda who served us beers and cigars afterwards, joins the select group of barmaids and waitresses who have conquered weary and thirsty Blood Bowlers after tournaments the world over.

Apologies for the long post - the entire sets of pics can been seen at:

www.oldmanmonkey.com

which isn't really ready to go up yet. But I wanted to get the pics out ASAP and with the computer problems I had Monday and Tuesday, this was the best solution.

Cheers to all who were there and congrats once again to Xavier!

Nice pics, OldManMonkey .. i was searching around for them ..
Just one question there ... did Xavi used his personalized shout when scoring a TD, or does he reserves it for local tourneys?

Something like 'Yiiiiiiiijhaaaaaaa!'
Old_Man_Monkey - Aug 06, 2003 - 10:54 AM
Post subject:
By all means, TiMuN, the "YIIAAAHHHHH" yell was in full voice this past weekend, but it didn't seem to be Xavi's exclusive domain. Seemed that the entire Spanish force was giving that shout upon success small or large.

There were moments it seemed like a UEFA cup final . . . Very Happy

Chaos Cup results:

http://www.blood-bowl.net/GenCon/ChaosCup2003Results.htm

This is what was provided... no win-tie-loss records ...and no explanations about how ties (like for Best Sportsman) were decided.

However at least now you can see how you finished.
