North America - Spike! Magazine 2011: September 10-11. Surrey, B.C., Canada

Post subject: Spike! Magazine 2011: September 10-11. Surrey, B.C., Canada
Last summer's event was a huge success and we were proud to again hold an event using only 40mm-scale boards and throwing meters, as well as being the first to introduce DGT Easy game timers to add the clock element to the game. We have had nothing but positive feedback on the boards and clocks with the only negative feedback being the price of drinks at the bar. Wink

Spike! 2010 was a year of firsts with 48 registered coaches by the end of the weekend. Not only was it the largest Spike! coaching turnout within it's history, but it was also the largest BB tournament Canada has ever seen. Our dedicated crew from Edmonton made the trek once again, as well as coaches from the newly formed Rat City Rumble league in Seattle and half a dozen members from OrdoFanaticus in Oregon. It also marked the first time that we had a New Yorker and a Californian make the trip out to play. We look forward to seeing last year's participants return and hope to see a lot of new faces as well.

For those of you unfamiliar with the SPIKE!, the SPIKE! Magazine Blood Bowl Championship is the Canadian Blood Bowl Major. Five "Major" tournments take place annually, each in a different country. They are:

1. The Southern Wastes Scrimmage, held each year in January at CanCon in Canberra, Australia.
2. The Dungeonbowl, held each year in March in Duesseldorf, Germany
3. The Blood Bowl, held each year in May at GW HQ in Nottingham, England
4. The Spike! Magazine Trophy, held each year in early September in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
5. The Chaos Cup, held each year in late September at the Battle Bunker Chicago, Illinous, USA

2011 marks the first year that the organizers of the Spike! Magazine and the Chaos Cup will be hosting the 2 North American Majors within a week of each other. We started this last year with a fortnight between them in the same month, but this is the first time that they will be within 7 days of each other, and hopefully the schedule for the Spike! and Chaos Cup for years to come. For those travellers wishing to make it out for a North American Major now you can try to make it out to both of them in one trip!

Registration give-away for Spike! Magazine 2011 has been updated. Every participant of this year's Spike! will receive a Count Luthor 2011 model at sign-up. The model is being produced by Impact, arkwork done by Thunderbowl's own Blammaham. The artwork for this model and concept is phenomenal - giving Count Luthor a much needed makeover.

I'd love to show you the artwork, but we are going to wait until we have the model, paint it, and update it here and on our Spike! tournament website later.

Again pre-reg will be taking place shortly once we have had a chance to update our website and tweak some of our tournament rules and scoring. Hope to see you guys out in September.

The home page is still going through some work (updating the poster image) but the new format for the http://spiketournament.com/ site is pretty much done and looks awesome! Good job Mike!

Rule updates from last year:

Painting Scoring:

01. No Coach Scoring: All paint job judging that affect the scores for Best Overall and Best Paintjob will be done by the organizers of the Spike! Magazine alone. No individual scoring between coaches each round is recorded at all. The Head Referee and 1-2 independent judges do all the painting scores for the entire tournament. These points still goes towards Best Paintjob as well as Best Overall. Paint Points for Best Overall are reduced from 40 to 30 points.

Partial Coach Scoring: In order to determine the Best Paintjob Award only the top teams are laid out at noon on the second day of the tournament where everyone chooses their top 3. These are phantom points, meaning they are added to the judges scores when determining the Best Paintjob Award, but they are not factored into Best Overall.

Sportsmanship Scoring: Current 5-point system will still be used to determine Best Sportsmanship as well as points going towards determining Best Overall.

When determining Favourite Opponent, coaches will still choose their top 3 opponents in order to break ties in the Sportsmanship Scores when determining Best Sportsmanship, but these are phantom points as well, meaning they are only counted for determining the Sportsmanship Award but not factored into Best Overall. As a result, Sportsmanship scoring for Best Overall is reduced from 48 to 30 points.

Blow-out Bonus Amendment: Reduced the Blow-out bonuses for touchdowns to +2 points.

Blow-out Casualties: +2 points Blow-out bonus to coaches who inflict 2 or more casualties to their opponents vs. what they suffer. This bonus is only be received if the coach who inflicted the casualty bonus actually won the match.

Recording Casualties: Record only casualties that you receive experience for.

1.1 M Team build: Skill Package: 1.1M build - full inducements minus wizards, mercenaries and cards. A skill package of either 6 regular skills, 4 regular skills plus one double, or 2 regular skills and 2 doubles. No attribute picks. No player can have more than one added skill, and no skill can be chosen more than twice.

Best Defence: We've added a new award to go along with the other 8 we already give away. "The Wall" - an award to the coach that gave up the least amount of touchdowns throughout the tournament will make it's debut in 2011.

More announcements to come!

Thunderkrunch 2 is done, so now the pre-registration for Spike! Magazine 2011 can now begin. I wanted to start it last week but I've been swamped at work lately. All the info you will need starting off can be found below. All tournament rules can be found @ http://spiketournament.com/

Things that have been added or changed from last year's event:

01. 1.1M Team Build + Skill Package: 1.1M to buy your players/inducements ect. plus the 6,5,4 skill package on top of that. Full rules can be found on the website.

02. Painting/Sportsmanship Scores: Revamped completely to eliminate 'chipmunking' in overall scores.

03. Blow-out Bonuses: The TD bonus for a 2+ difference has been reduced to +2 points from 5. Also, we have added a Blow-out Casualty bonus, same criteria, same +2 points.

04. Best Defence Award: We've added an additional award this year called "The Wall" for the coach who let in the least amount of touchdowns. So along with Spike! Champion, Coaching, Sportsmanship, Painting, Touchdowns For, Casualties For, Best Stunty, and Dead Last we are giving away 9 awards this year that look like this:

All of the following info can be found in our NAF posting as well as found on the website:

Spike! Magazine 2011 Blood Bowl Grand Tournament

- NAF member discount for registrations at the door
- 6-game Swiss Resurrection TV 110
- Door prizes from local and online stores
- Count Luthor 2011 model to every participant

We have a picture of the model and it looks awesome, but we don't want to post it until it's in our hands and Blammaham has a chance to paint it. But here's a picture of the concept art - the model looks virtually identical:

Vancouver is still kicking butt, Seattle has a serious community now, Edmonton still has a great contingent that we love to see every year, and Oregon is now joining the ranks for the Pacific North West Blood Bowl scene. Now if we could only get Calgary going again...

Going to be great Spike! this year so be sure not to miss out. $40 pre-reg plus a free Count Luthor 2011 figure to every participant. Looking forward to seeing you there. Very Happy

Well we added a new trophy to our list of awards last year for the best Stunty team based on this fluff in the LRB:

“The Goblin Tribal Leeg tournament is normally held about the same time as the Spike! Magazine Tournament, as most Goblin teams can’t afford to travel to far-off Estalia from their tribal lairs in the Darklands, and in any case Goblin players hate playing in the bright, sunny conditions under which the Spike! tournament is normally held. The Tribal Leeg doesn’t have a trophy or any gold prizes since it is all but impossible for a bunch of Goblins to arrange for a trophy and two different teams to be in the same place at the same time, and any gold prize is invariably stolen before the final takes place! This means that all the winner of the Goblin Tribal Leeg really gets is the undying support of huge horde of Goblin fans, who follow the team around the Old World watching it play. Whether being followed around the Old World by an army of Goblin fans is actually a good thing is open to debate, but it certainly increases the gate winnings that the team receives every time it plays a match!” -LRB 6.0, p33

I think Stunty teams at a 1.1M build plus skills are reasonably competitive at the tournament level for the whole show anyway, but the emergence of this award last year has brought out the Halfs and Gobs in droves lately! Very Happy

Granted we haven't finished pre-registration yet so imagine that percentage will go down a tad.

The Face Plant have announced a delay in the completation of the team uniforms. The production has said to be halted due to the staff being given a holiday before the onslaught of the upcoming tournamanet series. When asked the coach replied, "We are all aware of the considerations the owners make for the players. We do not have like or dislike the timing of those considerations. As coaching staff we must fully support the decisions of the owners...." there you have it folks. After the smoke cleared and the dust settled, 56 teams made their way out to compete for the Spike! Magazine 2011. Awesome turnout from the out-of-towners this year, especially Washington State, Alberta and Oregon. 2 Canadian provinces and 2 US States (take the square mileage of that and see how much Europe you can fit in there Wink) - Pac West is kicking ass and still growing! Another record turnout for Canadian tournaments held and another record showing for the Spike!

Special thanks go out to Dennis (daloonieshamen) for making the trip out from California. I regret not having a chance to talk to you that weekend but I was absolutely swamped (we'll chat at World Cup though).

Big thanks go out to Weav for rounding up the Oregon crew and being such a great sport. Big thanks to Tremere and Da_Scum for bringing the Alberta crew out as well - wouldn't be a Spike! without you guys.

Supreme thanks go out to Khail for rounding up the community in Washington State and all his hard work on getting our trophies done this year. Still owe you a drunk night in Amsterdam for that one!

Huge thanks go out to Blammaham for designing and bringing to fruition the great Duke Vampire model that debuted at the Spike! this year. Awesome job dude.

Big thanks go out to Sallacious that didn't get to play but helped with the Name Tag design as well as those great new Throw-in templates. Cheers buddy!

Thanks for Killerbean and Warpstone for all their help on the day, and Killerbean's great names tags.

And nuclear thanks go out to my brother Mike, aka Poundfist, for all his hard work on the website, registration, set up, prize support, and overall help during the day. Thanks again for taking all my abuse. Could not do it without you buddy. Looking forward to when we can both sit out of a tournament and play at the same time! Amsterdam!!

And again huge thanks to all our sponsors who made sure all 56 participants walked away with something from the door prize table! AEG games - makers of Monkey Lab and Thunderstone rocked the mike this year. Awesome guys! Imperial Hobbies also contributed vastly and we thank them greatly. And thank you Craving for a Game for your continued prize support and advertising the event.

Exactly - just waiting on one NAF ID to be entered. I should have all the NAF stats entered by mid week. Thank you for your patience.
