Post subject: Death Bowl IV - October 14th &15th 2006
The Halflings are coming! The Halflings are coming!

It seems that there has been a scheduling conflict this year and the local merchants association is holding a sticky-bun festival on the same weekend as The Death Bowl. That of course means there will be hordes of sticky little people running all over the place getting everything mucked up with sticky goodness. We've been in contact with the Merchants Association and they've assured us that they're willing to work with us to make sure that both events go off without a problem. In fact the Merchants Association has agreed to contribute to the Death Bowl festivities. They've arranged to have the famed Deeproot Strongbranch on hand as a guest of honor. Also since they know that Halflings are great fans of Blood Bowl they've decided to hand out a trophy of their own to honor the best finishing Halfling team to survive The Death Bowl. The Dark Angels are already drooling over the sweet little feast they'll be having as they expect the carnage of sticky little Halflings to reach record proportions in this years Death Bowl match. It will be a Death Bowl for the record books. Watch out, the Halflings are coming to Death Bowl!

**************

Yes ladies and gents the Halflings are coming to Death Bowl IV and as such that means there will be a few special rules to mark the occasion.

The Death Bowl IV will use LRB 4.0 with the standard Death Bowl modifications and rules updates. A full list of Death Bowl specific rules will be posted soon at www.TheDeathBowl.com

The following are special rules I am considering for this special Halfling event. All of these rules are at present open for discussion and if you have other ideas to mark the occasion please mention them.

* Since there are so many Halflings on hand who are buying up event tickets the seats in the stands are filling up with sticky little people. When a Halfling team faces off against a non Halfling team they gain a +1 FF bonus for that match. Their opponent takes a -1 FF hit for that match.

* Since there is such an abundance of sticky-buns and food around it's much easier for Halfling teams to get the ingredients they need for their master chiefs. That being the case, extra reroll steal attempts will only cost 50,000gp as opposed to the usual 80,000gp

*As mentioned above Deeproot Strongbranch will be attending the sticky-bun festival. Enterprising Halfling coaches will of course try to hire him for their teams. His asking price for the event is 300,000gp but his agreement with the Merchant association is that he'll only sign with Halfling teams. He's not picky which team he'll play for but if he's scheduled to play for both teams in the same match then his contract stipulates that he doesn't play for either team though he still gets paid by both.

*During the Death Bowl match Halfling teams will be able to steal rerolls from each of their opponents as opposed to the standard one random opponent. That means if he steals 2 rerolls he steals 2 from each of the three opposing teams so that's a total of 6 rerolls. A Halfling team may still not use more than one reroll per turn so any stolen rerolls above 8 are wasted. If however during the Death Bowl match there is more than one Halfling team in the match then there is a chance that the reroll steals cancel each other out. The conflicting smells can combine to create a disgusting brew of putrid stench. Each Halfling team rolls to see if they have a successful steal. Since there is more than one team trying to steal rerolls it's a little harder to do. Rolls of 4+ are successful steals. If all rolls are under 4 then the attempt to steal fails. The combined smells simply stink. Teams may not loose more than one reroll per steal attempt. If more than one team rolls higher than 4 then the high roll wins the steal. If the high roll is equal then the high rollers will roll off again until a winner is decided.

*Also as mentioned above the Merchants Association will be presenting a trophy to the best finishing/surviving Halfling team. This will be awarded to the Halfling team with the best placed finish in the tournament overall. It does not mean that the Halfling team must finish in the top three. If the best Halfling team is in 10th place then the award will go to that team. Those of you who were at the New World Cup got a look at the trophy. It's a silver dinner tray with Silver Fork and Spoons attached. Yes it's real silver and the winner of the award will take the trophy home to hold onto until next year.

That's about all I have for now. I was thinking of modifying the kickoff table a little as well.

Which reminds me. I believe there was some concern about the kickoff table last year during the 7's round. Do people think it needs to be toned down a little in that round or is the increased carnage of the smaller teams all part of the fun?

All Montreal-Toronto rivalries aside. I'd love to see you win The Death Bowl with a halfling team after three years in a row in the finals. It would make for such great tournament history!

It's starting to look like there might be some international competition though at this years Death Bowl. I'v got nothing confirmed yet but there's a group talking on TBB about making the trip over.

Clan-Skaven, Talons and myself have a bet going on FUMBBL to see who is the best coach of a halfling team. The idea is that we have to play each race once, and only once. There is no conceding a match and no retiring your team.

After the 21 races are played we will compare scores and determine a winner.

Talons - can't remember how he is doing, but not so hot.

Clan-Skaven - 1 win, 1 tie 8 losses Razz

Spazzfist - 4 wins, 4 ties, 1 loss Cool (I even had an ogre coach begging me for mercy! Laughing SI'd two ogres and beat the bully 2-0!)

the LRB 4 kick off table is best for tourneys now....driving X hours to lose 3+ turns to a pitch invasion is retarded, same with losing 1+ players for the game to a Pitch Invasion. Games should be competitive one-offs and the lrb 4.0 does that.....to lose a game on the first kick off event of a game is harsh.....

Too bad I don't think I could talk my wife into playing a whole tournament -- but she is the master chef for her own team, the Durham Diners. She doesn't actually play much though, since she really does prefer to cook sticky buns when we have folks over for gaming.

Can you please, please, please move BB 7's to Saturday as the last game of the day?

That way we have only 2 rounds on Sunday with the Deathbowl round really counting as two games in length.

I would prefer not to be rushed in the Deathbowl round as i was last year as it definately involves a lot more stragedy as you have 3 opponents rather then just one.

And i would really like to leave for home a little earlier, the drive home last year was really hard after all that bloodbowl.

That is my only small request from a simple man.

I have no problem moving the 7's to Saturday. It'll just mean we finish late Saturday. Probably not before 8pm. It'll also mean though that we can start at 9 on Sunday instead of 8. We'd start the Death Bowl match at noon instead of 1pm. You guy's probably wouldn't get out of there much earlier though. There's also no way to avoid an overtime either. We got a late start on Sunday last year and then the lead table went into Death Bowl overtime. The only way to make sure things keep on schedule for the Death Bowl match is to clock the whole game. I don't know if you guys want to do that. There is 15+ minutes between turns though so people have plenty of time to think.

What do you guy's think. Finish late Saturday? Clock on the DB match?

I think finishing late on Saturday and starting at 9 on Sunday is a great idea.

And i don't think a clock is needed for Db unless a coach decides to take forever each turn 'cough' Zombie 'cough' then it can be enforced.

I know with Deathbowl you can't gurantee a scheduled time but what ever you can do to help shorten the time such as moving bb7's to saturday, definately helps.

Yeah holding it at that hotel you can get away with finishing that late. Got to admit that's a pretty good location for a tourney.

Still even under that schedule we don't finish up the Death Bowl round before 5pm. Ceremonies and such you guys could be out of there by 6. If it goes into overtime, which as history tells is likely enough, it'll still run late.

Hmm, how about this. New Deathbowl Rule: at the start of each turn, toss a coin or roll a die,
heads/evens: a random player on the pitch for your turn dies.
Tails/odds: a random player on one of the opposing teams dies.

Should be able to avoid overtime that way.

Allrighty after some discussion I've made some slight changes to the proposed extra halfling rules. The cost of Deeproot has gone down but he's not available for 7's and can't use team rerolls. Also the way Flings steal rr's in the Death Bowl match has been changed to be more in line with the official rules. Let me know what you think.

His asking price for the event is 250,000gp but his agreement with the Merchant association is that he'll only sign with Halfling teams. He's not picky which team he'll play for but if he's scheduled to play for both teams in the same match then his contract stipulates that he doesn't play for either team though he still gets paid by both. Deeproot will not be allowed into the BB7's match and he will not have access to team re-rolls.

*During the Death Bowl match Halfling teams will be able to force all their opponents to lose rerolls as opposed to the standard one random opponent. That means if he gains 2 rerolls, each of the opposing team looses 2 rerolls. A Halfling team may still not use more than one reroll per turn so any stolen rerolls above 8 are wasted. It is possible that there may be more than one Halfling team in a Death Bowl match. If that is the case, Halfling teams can only lose rerolls that are already on their rosters. Rerolls gained from their chief can not be touched by other halfling teams.

*Since the Dark Angels and the organizers like to see as much carnage on the field as possible. There will be certificates given out for the most halflings killed in one turn, one half, one game, and in the whole tournament. (Thanks for that one Mel)

Also stealing a page from the Chaos Cup play book we'll be offering...

The Death Bowl Friends and Family Plan
This year at Death Bowl we're offering an incentive plan for you to get those friends of yours who have never been to Death Bowl out to the tournament. Bring a friend to Death Bowl IV and you'll save $5 off the tournament entry fee. Bring 2 and save $10. For each coach you bring that did not attend in 2005, you will get $5 off your admission price.

We're also offering a pre-registration gift this year. Coaches who pre-register for the event will get 2 limited edition Death Bowl IV D6's when they sign in at the event. Pre-registration is free so head on over to www.TheDeathBowl.com today and get yourself registered.

I'm still open to ideas that will help out the Flings if you have any. Zombie has made several suggestions over on the HR forum and I've adopted all of them save one, giving Deeproot reroll access. I just don't want to add any rules that constitute giving them a free ride. Everyone still has to earn their way into the championship round. The Fling leg up should just bring them on par with most other teams.

Actually I havn't seen many yet. Glen Jones has signed up but has listed his team as TBD (To Be Determined) Ben is the only Dwarf coach at the moment out of 11 signups.

There's truth in that rumor Laughing I don't know just how well the Dwarves will actually do against the flings. If they have no rerolls left and no Big Guy/Star of their own to take care of Deeproot and the 2 other trees I think they'll have a fight on their hands. Best I've ever done against Dwarves was tie (and I've done that 3 times) ... never been able to pull out a victory ... and that was with having Deeproot (able to use team re-rolls) and 2 Trees and the Dwarfs having lost all their re-rolls to me. Its a really difficult match-up to win ... even against a very poor Dwarf coach ... so if the other Dwarf coach has any skill ... the Halflings really don't have much of a prayer.

I'll caveat this by saying that if Zombie brings 'Flings .... then he might have a chance ... but outside of him ... I seriously doubt Flings can do it. I've played this exact scenario that you have set up (with Deeproot having re-rolls) at Underworld, Zlurpee, and the Chaos Cup and never did better than force the tie.

well in your previous statement, you said you weren't going to "change the rules" so deeproot could use RR's---which according to the rules is legal, NOT that you changed the rules for DB that Deeproot couldn't use RR's. Yours is a change to the rules and a tourney specific rule, not the other way around.

I don't know about not having much of a prayer. A tough matchup for sure but if all things being equal the likely outcome is a tie then I think that's pretty good and right about where I wanted them to be. Beyond that it'll be left up to coaching ability as it should be.

When you look at the probability of it, a halfling will be taken off the pitch every time that he is knocked down (7 being the most likely number on two dice, means that his armour will probably be broken and with the stunty injury rule he will most probably be knocked out (at best)). The only saving grace that ahalfling has is his dodge skill which can make him very difficult to put down. Dwarves not only have an abundance of the block skill that the halflings lack, but they are also able to take out their dodge skill when hitting them. Not to mention the troll slayers which are very effective at dealing with the treemen.

I have played halflings vs, dwarves, and managed to squeak out a tie, but it was pretty rough. Would not look forward to another! Dwarves are definitely the bane of halflings in BB. Sad

All Games count towards your NAF ranking. The Death Bowl round is a little tricky at times to figure out exactly who you'll be ranked against but it is still ranked. Basically for the DB round who you get ranked against depends on where you finished in that match. 1st gets ranked against 3rd and 2nd against 4th. Finishing place is determined by TD's scored, then casualties, then overall tourney points.
Hoshi_Komi - Jul 27, 2006 - 07:01 PM

should actually be 1st vs 4th and 2nd vs 3rd, because you could end up with 2nd and 3rd tieing and 4th still losing.

1st should be paired up with the 4th place player at the table because it might be preserving a 2nd and 3rd place tie? Sorry ken but I'm not quite following the logic there. It might also be giving 1st place an easy win or 2nd an unfair loss. The two top players at the table get paired up with the two bottom players in order of occurance. How else could it possibly be fair? Everyone at the table can end in a tie so basing anything on the possibility that there could be a tie isn't getting ahead.

Final score 2-1-1-0

2 is first player, 1 is 2nd + 3rd, 0 is 4th.

so first player should get win vs fourth. 2nd/3rd should get ties.

final round shouldn't be based on prior points unless used as a tie breaker.

if it happened to be 1-0-0-0. then first should get a win against the lowest rated team with the other two getting ties.

or if it's 2-1-0-0. 1st should get the win vs last and 2 vs 3rd.
CyberHare - Jul 28, 2006 - 06:09 AM

That's not fair at all Ken. There has to be a fixed rule as to against whom you're going to be ranked. It can't be something "on the fly". That's begging for a problem.

Depending on Cas and perhaps previous rankings the "winner" and "third" place coaches probably get a tie.

There could 100 what of scenarios and you can't make special rules for all of them. The only way that's fair across the board is to state how it'll be calculated up front and let people decide if they are playing for ranking or not from there.

Brian,

as long as the formula for a tie breaker is known to everyone (or at least everyone who bothers to read the rules) up front, whatever way you decide works for me.

Personally, I agree with gKen though, that the 1st and 4th place players should get matched up.

ie, if the game ended in a three way tie (ie the 1-1-1-0 scenerio I presented) the player with the most cas (or previous rankings) would finish first, but he only gets a tie, while the player who finishes second gets a win but he didn't do as well in the actual deathbowl game.

Can you imagine the fallout if Rod managed to finish in a three way tie and he got credit with a tie and not a win over the person who was shut out? He'd errupt in the forums.

It's all in the rules on the website and in the TRB. Also I'm not the sole person who decided on the way it would be figured out. I had to get the ok from the NAF staff back when I ran the first Death Bowl. It's not as simple as deciding to change it now. It's not complicated either but it's not simply a matter of me wanting it one way or another. A precident has been set by the 3 previous events and there'd need to be a reason to change it.

And he's not the only person who expressed concern to me about last years kickoff table. So in light of that we'll be using the 4.0 kickoff table this year at Death Bowl. I know there were some issues with the kickoff table and the 7's round last year. Poor Glen got the shaft on turn one and it was downhill from there. Hopefully the 4.0 table will help fix that a little and we'll see from there if any further adjusting is needed.

As you can probably tell by the Impact Miniatures banner now up on the website we've gotten some prize support from them. They've been kind enough to donate an Ice Troll, a Beer Garden Beauty w/Barrel Pyramid and an Imp Team (10 figures).

A few other small prizes thus far include a Res. gutter runner, a topless female FF player holding a helmet from Hassle Free (HFF001) and one each of the 2004 & 2005 Death Bowl tourney figs. I'm still working on getting a full game again.

Ok time to kick this into overdrive. We've got just under 2 months until Death Bowl! Yeah Baby!!

Prize support update..

I've got a little prize support in thus far and I'm expecting a fair amount more in the near future. Not wanting to count any chickens before they hatch though I'll just mention what I have in hand.

From Impact Miniatures we have
- 1 Snow Troll
- 1 Wench with Barrel pyramid
- 1 Imp pack of ten

From House Rulez thus far we have
- 2 signed BB novels, one signed by both JJ and Matt Forbeck
- 1 res gutter runner
- 1 Impact! mini's 10 pack of Deadlings
- 1 Street bowl board from Impact! mini's
- 1 HR 2004 tourney fig
- 1 HR 2005 tourney fig
- 2 female fantasy football figs from Hassle Free mini's
- 1 of the Chaos Cup "official figs"
- 1 aluminum team carrying case (better than last years)
- 1 aluminum team carrying case (same as last years)

I haven't heard back yet from GW or any of the local shops so I'm expecting that list to grow over the next 8 weeks.

Of course as always we have our lineup of custom trophies. This years first second & third place trophy figs have been upgraded to the special edition version of the figs. She's topless. Hey a little gratuitous nudity never hurts. Especially in Montreal Cool As always most of the trophies are hand made custom trophies with oak bases, tumbled marble tops and custom figs. We've got,

- 1st place
- 2nd place
- 3rd place
- Most TD's
- Most CAS
- Most Sporting
- Best Team

The Best Painted trophy this year will be getting a bit of a change to be the "Best Team" trophy. Having given Ben enough trophies Wink I figured this year we'd switch it up a bit and go with the best overall team based on theme, painting and originality.

And of course there's the most coveted trophy of all. The glorious Death Bowl Wooden Spoon. Now as fate would have it the spoon has been lost to a tragic house fire. Poor Steve got out with nothing more than the clothes on his back. Obviously, the spoon being just about the last thing someone is thinking about when getting out of a house fire, it went up in flames. At the moment I'm on the lookout for a replacement spoon. I've got a few leads and hopefully we'll have an equally large spoon for this years event. If not I'll hand out a temporary "mini spoon".

Also this year we've got the special awards for "The year of the Halfling" These include the silver plated Halfling Dinner Tray which the best Halfling team will get to take home for one year. Year of the Halfling awards include,

- The Halfling Dinner Tray
- Most Halflings killed in 1 turn
- Most Halflings killed in 1 half
- Most Halflings killed in 1 game

The Most Flings Killed awards will receive certificates and a prize pick.

Now of course I hate to leave anyone out when handing out prizes. This year I want to try and have as many pre-registered coaches as possible. It'll make planning the event so much easier. To that end I've had special edition Death Bowl IV dice made up and each coach who pre-registers for the Death Bowl will receive a free set when they sign in at the event. As is custom at the Death Bowl I'm also trying to get my hands on the 2006 HR fig but as of yet it's not in my hands. I'll give out more details on that when it shows up.

Thus far we've got 17 people pre-registered in the system an if everyone shows up who's said they will we should easily be 30 + coaches again this year. Gen Con had 44 this year boys and it would be sweet indeed if we could top that. I've still heard almost nothing from the American coaches. Mo's got here name on the list but I'm looking at the rest of you Boston/New York lads who could help us get those numbers up over 44.

Special Projects

Well I haven't had much time for special projects this year so there will be no repeat of last years new Death Bowl stadium this year. I am working on a new Halfling field that I hope will be ready in time but it won't be on the scale of Phantom Field or Carnage Colosseum. This years big special project has been the Death Bowl web site. The web site will take Death Bowl to the next level in terms of statistics management, team development and community building. It already has the ability to display teams and rosters as well as scheduled matches and results. The scripts for the web site are a lot simper to modify and create than scripts used in the "Nuke" style web sites. Once completed I hope to make it available for anyone who wants to upgrade their event web site.

Well that's about it for now. As always at Death Bowl you are our guests for the weekend and we aim to please. Water, soft-drinks & a brown liquid we like to call coffee are always available free of charge all weekend long and lunch is included in the entry fee for both days. Being the year of the Flings we'll also trey to have a supply of sticky buns available for our little friends with a sweet tooth.

Don't forget. Get yourself pre-registered today to ensure you get a set of Death Bowl dice.

High attendance at tourneys, anyones tourneys with any rule set, is a good thing for all of us in North America and a good sign that things are moving in the right direction. I also want a high attendance this year at the DB because I'm going to put it to a vote as to what next years rule set will be. I've got no love for LRB 5 but if that's what the people want, so it shall be done. I have a feeling though that the vote here will be tight and that 4.0 will come out on top. It'll depend on who finally shows up and wants to make their voice heard.

I was sitting hear reading that over and it occured to me that it's rather likely that whoever gets the most kills in one game will also have the most kills in one turn and one half. Thus giving one person 3 prizes. Not to mention it's supposed to be a Fling year and that's a three to 1 trophy ratio against flings. I'm going to switch that up.

Looks like it will be another great tourney, Brian! Seriously considering 'flings as well. Reading through it all, glad you added extra prizes for halfers as well as others killing 'em!

Still not a fan of 7s, but you already know that. Neutral The only grey area in the rules that I can see are about the time limit for the game.

"Games not finished in 3 hours are ended as is with the winner being the coach who scored more TD's at that point."

Can you make a stipulation that if its going to end before 16 turns that each team plays the same number of turns? I've been hosed by slow opponents in the past (not your tourney!), it can happen 50% of the time! I hope to have a timer with me this time, but you never know. It would suck for someone to lose because their opponent stalled and got more turns.

The earlier it ends on Sunday the better. Last year I got home at 5:30am after conning a cabbie in TO to give me a flat rate home. Laughing It can never be said that DB weekends aren't interesting!

I just looked through the rules and did one of those forehead slap things. I can't believe I never put that in there before. Yes we'll be adding that in. At the end of time both teams get to play the same number of turns.

Just remember that you guys have been asking for it. The schedule has been changed and we'll be finishing later on Saturday to finish up earlier on Sunday. I hope it works out ok. It'll be a long day on Saturday. But at least we'll start a little later on Sunday. No more 8am start time.

Thanks for the slight change in the rules! Sometimes its the little things that slip by. All it takes is a little bit more advanced warning that you are gonna cut the game off early, so that both opponents can finish up. "You are now on your last turn, guys!"

Do you mind if I put 'TBA' under team name? It all depends on the painting of the trees! You aren't gonna spam me if I put in my email address, are you? Wink

Dennis (aka Bud) has already expressed interest when I talked to him last night! Now we are going to team up and try to convince Rob W. (sixfootdwarf) and Trevor... Though it will likely come down to seats in the cars, and who drives. So far I have a seat reserved in Eric's van. Cool

Just a quick Death Bowl update.

The rule books are almost finished being layed out. With any luck I'll have them printed up this weekend and put together early next week. If you've pre-registered please make sure I have your address so I can mail out your rule book.

We've got 28 people registered for the tournament thus far and there are several others who have said they'll be registering soon. There are a number of people taking advantage of the "Death Bowl Friends & Family" plan to safe money on tournament entry. Get those Blood Bowl buddies out to the tournament!

There's rumor in the air that there may be a new Stadium being built at the Angel Peak complex. Nothing on the scale of Phantom Field or Carnage colloseum but there's rumor that the same Merchants Association that's running the sticky bun festival is flipping the bill to have a special field built for Halfling teams to play at. Times running out though so it's still up in the air if that project has a chance of being finished. I'll keep my ear to the ground and keep you all up to date on any rumors I hear.

That's it for now.

I bought a BB blister on ebay, and the guy is trying to charge me a ludicrous amount for shipping because it is crossing the border. Is there someone who would be willing to have this shipped to their address and then bring it to me at the Deathbowl? I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Death Bowl IV is going live on the internet!

Well that's the hope at least Wink I've arranged to have internet access at the venue this year and if all goes according to plan ( does it ever?) We'll be running the tournament live from www.thedeathbowl.com.

Now to that end you should all be entering your rosters into the website before the event. To give you all a little incentive I'm stealing Dan's idea and I'll be holding a prize draw for those of you who have your rosters entered before you show up at the event. What will we be drawing for? That's still a little up in the air but at the moment it's looking like a few GW BB ogre figs.

Now all I have to do is finish the website. No problem Shocked

Sorry. By live I didn't mean that we would be broadcasting video. Sorry if I gave that impression. I guess I should have defined live. Confused

We'll be running the event right from the website. We'll be posting results as they happen as well as all the other stats we usually record. Skill picks should be able to be entered as you get them. Basically this year intead of using the Excel spreadsheet I usually use we'll be using the website so anyone who is interested in seeing how the results are going can check them out.

Maybe some day we'll get to video but not just yet. Baby steps Smile Lets try to walk before we run.

The bad news is, it means I won't be able to make it to the Deathbowl. I start the day after the Deathbowl, and theres just too much going with the move and starting work to fly to Montreal for the weekend. Sorry guys, I'm really dissapointed that I won't make it.

Only if it refers to the school subject (http://www.yorku.ca/gcareers/grammar/capital_letters.htm#RULE%2012) -- as for reference to the english LANGUAGE (as I was doing), it does not have to be capitalized since it is not a proper noun. When else would the word 'english' NOT be capitalized?

Ok I have the skill adding system up and "functional". Be gentle with it there might be a bug in it here or there. It can't tell you what skills you are allowed to take. It just gives you a selection of all the skills. You'll find at the top of your roster pages a new button telling you how many skill picks you have available. If you have none you won't have a button. At the moment you should all have 2 picks. Please be sure that you select the correct player with the correct skill as you can't undo the selection. Once you've added a skill to a player it'll show up on your rosters in red.

Let me know of any suggestions for making it better or bugs if you find them.

I think because the icons are below the surface (as they are ethced in) they will not get much wear and tear on them from the rolling (no more than the regular). So after a while they may need a touch up, but it is not like ypu are touching the paint all the time.

All right gents we've got just over one week to go and the level of trash talkin in here is pretty low Laughing Death Bowl IV is Bills (VBZ) year I tell you. He's taking the title!

As of this morning I have the website fully functional for a beta run through a tournament. All the skills can be added before the tournament and I just finished adding the scripts to add skills between games. Anyone from anywhere in the world will be able to go to www.thedeathbowl.com and check out the action as it happens. There's a lot more I want to do with the website, like being able to bet on games in real time and all the individual player and coach stats, but that will have to wait for now.

Tha halfling pitch is progressing v e r y s l o o o w l y... I havn't had a single day off of work in 8 weeks, it'll be 9 weeks by next weekend. I just havn't had the time to work on it that I wanted to. At this point in time I still think I can finish it but I'm just giving the heads up that it might be somewhat incomplete.

All of the other trophies are finished and ready to go. I havn't seen the first place fig yet myself but Brie tells me it's finished as well. I've got the certificates for the Fling prizes made up I just need to print them out on a good printer and get some frames for them.

Since it's looking pretty good that we'll be over 30 again this year I've gone ahead and reserved 3 rooms again at the college. We're on a corner this year though but the rooms are still next to each other.

I think that's about it... Oh yes I've gotten the figs done for Carnage Colloseum. The DB I, II & III teams have their figs in the stadium.

Oh and I have a little bad news about the spoon. We've been unable to get a replacement spoon. We still have a couple leads and we have a temporary replacement for this year. This year the last place gets to take home a wooden paddle.

Checkin' out the Deathbowl site and see that there are 32 teams up there. Unfortunately, I know that there are at least two that won't be coming: Paul Connors (Barrett's Privateers) and Dan Campbell (Recently Harvested). That would put the numbers down to 30.

Of those 30, we have (from what I can tell) the following breakdown:
Orcs: 3 teams
Halflings: 5 teams
Dwarves: 4 teams
Skaven: 3 teams
Vampires: 1 team
Khemri: 1 team
Amazons: 1 team
Humans: 1 team
Unknown (no team or logo to indicate*): 11 teams

*to be honest, one of the logos was kind of elfie, but I wasn't sure which flavour of elf it was!

Brian, you have to get on the cases of these people who are not putting their teams in! You have a great tool here, and people should be rewarding your efforts by giving what you need to make this tourney run smoother!

All in all everything is looking great Brian! Almost time!

I won't be playing either so that's 29. If we get an odd number my odd man out will sit out. Hopefully some of SBG's crew will be attending to fill up the seats.

It's hard to believe we're just 4 days away!

Thanks Craig. I'm crossing my fingers that all goes well with the website. I'm totally pumped about the fact that we have 5 Halfling teams signed up. That's just too cool! I wonder if that's the most halfling teams any tournament has ever had.

One more day! And shockingly I'm still not fully prepared. What would a tourney be without last minute prep work Very Happy

Now it's of course going to rain this weekend so bring along your umbrella's. 4 years in a row on the same weekend and always it rains. Maybe it's a hint Wink

It's looking like the MTL crowd is going to have a fight on it's hands this year in order to hold onto the title. I think the Toronto crowd is a little miffed that we took the Canadian open title. I'll have to ask Zombie to bring along the trophy. We've also got a good sized Ottawa area crowd this year. Perhaps the capitol city is trying to sneak in under the radar with a few aces? There's also a big local crowd from the Chateauguay area. Dan and Brie have been banging the war drums to stir up support in their area and it's been working.

Unfortunatly there are a few friends who can't be with us this year. Fred and Rene both have work commitments and won't be able to make it. Rene will be there Sunday though to hand off the axe to the new champ. That leaves us with Zombie as the only previous champ at the event. Garth has some silly excuse about a baby or something Very Happy Just kidding ya big lug. You will be missed and I won't be surprised if you still win the sportsmanship trophy even though you're not there. Melifaxis has been scared off by Montreal thugs... Wink Laughing

On a lighter note we've got some of the best prize support to date for the DB. Several teams, a number of rare figs, Street bowl board, custom DBIV dice and much much more.

Those of you traveling tomorrow please travel safe.

Very hard game, but I took it with a 2-1 final tally.

With everything that is good there is always bad. Before the game getting my players out, one Treeman decides he is going to attempt to fly. Well it didnt go so well for him.
Cement Floor + Treeman = Chipped paint, and a loss of arms.

I had to quiuckly reprogram the points calculations page this morning after a glitch was found.

Everyones having a blast. We lost a few coaches who pre-registered but 24 is still a fairly good turnout.

Back at work, after getting home about 2:30 last night.

Awesome tourney Brian! (As usual) Even though my 'flings went 1 and 5, I kept it close in every game except one, left a couple of players with a small handful of players on the field by the end of the game, and scored my first ever Deathbowl touchdown! So even though I came in second last place, I am very happy with my performance this weekend, and even more pleased at having won the Best Team award!

We talked about it on the way back to T.O. and made some solid plans to start playing LRB 5.0 to form a more educated opinion on what we think of the new system. Should be good!

To everyone who came out, it was good to see you again, and look forward to seeing you in the near future at other tourneys.

Just as a FYI for every one who was interested in the non-smudging & waterproof inking crayon that was used for many of the black and green dice of Team Southern Ontario [your welcome guys!! Evil or Very Mad ] and now Team Boston; it is called Staonal (pronounced: stay on all).

I got mine at www.advancinghordes.com (which is a Canadian retailer) but the shipping kinda sucks unless you get a resonably sized order of stuff (this is also where I got my treemen). Though there may be other places that sell it for better.

Also, just to let you know, so far 21 ~ 24 dice have been inked and only the tip of the crayon has been used up.

Ahh the joys and sorrows of a Death Bowl weekend. Thank you to all the coaches who showed up for DBIV. It definetly was Team Southern Ontario's year having taken the lions share of the awards and prizes back home with them. Team Montreal is going to have to pull up it's socks and take back the pride at DBV. The gauntlet has been thrown down Very Happy A big congrats to Peter Meers who pulled out a win, under the clock and pressure, in the last turn of the second half of the DBIV championship match. That was without a doubt the most politicing I've ever seen in a DB championship match. Laughing A big thank you also to my wife and friends who are always there to support me at Death Bowl. Without them Death couldn't exist. A special thank you to my wife for not divorcing me after the umpteenth time of me saying "what did you do there" and then figuring out it was the website that was wrong Embarassed

So it looks like DBV will be run under some form of LRB5. Rolling Eyes I get the feeling the DBV rule book is going to need more than a few extra pages to house rule back in the fun.

Those of you who are checking out the stats on www.thedeathbowl.com will be understandably confused as to who exactly won the tournament. Joe Byers finished with the most points but Peter Meers won the championship match taking the tournament title. A bit of a big I didn't consider before hand. A simply way to resolve the problem would be to give the champ some sort of points boost. I'll think about it and figure out what can be done to fix that.

Look to the website soon for the tournament photo's.

Ahh that makes it all worth it. Knowing that there was at least one person checking it out is at least confirmation that it's not a waste of time. Craig and Ben expressed interest in the system for their events. Hopefully the more people we get using it the better it'll get.

Apologies for not having photo updates on the website over the course of the weekend. I managed to forget the cable to attach my camera to the laptop both days Embarassed

There is a glitch in the way that skills get allocated at the moment so I'll need to fix that before coaches can update their rosters. If they want to.

Yes the Southern Ontario Boyz took home many prizes!!!

Congrats Peter, Next year will be tough for you to defend it from all of us!

Way to go to Cam for sweeping all the Halfing Prizes!

Craig won his best team award for his awsome Killer Bees!

Eric & his first ever Death-Bowl takes the Spoon (I look forward to you handing it off to somebody next year!)

Niagara Falls went home with most TD's Talons' Crookback Mountain Cowboys with a total of 12! While Clan-Skaven's (myself) Warthogs won most Casualties with 13, (despite being in a 5 way tie with 13 Cas. Lucky for me to win tiebreaker with the fewest Cas against, with 2!)

Well The Montreal control of the Death-Bowl prizes finally came to a hault with the Southern Ontario Boys taking home many prizes!

I want to thank Brian for putting on another awsome Tourney! The Death-Bowl is by far the best BB tourney to attend in my opinion!

Thanks to Brian's wife for again putting up with all of us fanatics!

Thanks to Brian's pal Brian for once again handing out water at the tourney, (small ways to make the tourney awsome)

Almost forgot, thankyou Eric for driving us lads to & back from Montreal, (& dooin our dice!)

Thankyou Spazz for letting Rob & I crash at your house Sunday Night.

Thanks to Talons & Spazz for assisting me in my lack of $$$ for the weekend!!!

It was an exciting & a frustrating time for the Warthogs (mostly the final round), but none the less I had a great time! Thanks to all my opponents for a blast!

Congratulations to everyone for a superb tournament, and excellent company from the first game till the last!

I'd like to thank Brian for his dedication, hardwork, and overachievement YEAR AFTER YEAR! It's one thing to host a great tournament, but quite another to bring it four years in a row. The game would not be what it today on this continent without your massive contribution. A tip of my hat to you, my friend!

Thats enough serious stuff...

'Tis true, Southern Ontario and the TBBF brought home the majority of the hardware this year. We got the monkey off out backs finally (we heard "Almost!" and "Oh so close!" far too often in years gone by) with a championship won by Peter Meers. And he didn't have to lie, cheat, or connive to do it, it was all hard work. Well done, Pete!

Myself, I couldn't say no to The Year of the Halfling. I've played them before in a different edition, and access to Deeproot sealed the deal. Fear him or worship him, hes the man... er.. tree. I surprised many, including myself, how well I did with 2 wins and 3 losses (all by 1 TD, some in overtime!). I was then blown away during my Deathbowl game, with my treemen dominating the center of the Deathbowl pitch, and my halfling hit squads ability for defense and successful fouls! I won with a tossed Halfer!

Thanks to all I played against for the company and the laughs! It was great to see all the old faces again, and meet plenty of new ones as well!

The queue for the Half Pint Hellions Fan Club starts on the left! Laughing

Have to warn you now, that the old noodle is cooking, and I have a couple more ideas for teams! Only problem with that is that I was hoping to bring my ogre team of Mexican masked wrestlers (The Luchadores) out to the Year of the Ogre next year, but we'll have to wait and see what happens..... Smile

Well next year being the year of the Ogre we'll be using the 4.0 Ogre roster, not the 5.0. Just to keep that in mind for those of you interested in bringing out Ogre teams for DBV. There's going to be a lot of rules juggling for next year to make 5.0 playable. Rod you should make up that "Teleporting Pixies" team for next year Laughing

Brian

Just a little shout out to all my rowdy friends from Death Bowl IV. Thanks once again to your wife, friends and of course yourself for making Death Bowl the ultimate Bloodbowl Tourney.

To all my teamates from Southern Ontario......Let's kick some Montreal A double crooked letter next year at Death Bowl V. Just to let them know, who the kings of Bloodbowl really are.

P.S Ben....Could you maybe try and win a prize next year????? B*tch!!!

Last but not least, Thanks to everyone who came out to this years Death Bowl. We missed you Paul, Garth, G-Ken, OMM, and the rest of the tourneys usual suspects. Hopefully next year will be bigger and better.

PS2 I think B*tch should be the theme of the year!!!!!! Laughing

Well, Team USA made it back home along with nénufars from the boulangerie. Yum. Had a great time again. Thanks Brian & stalwart cohorts. Wish more of the team was there....

After a couple of weekends of travelling, I'm almost caught up on laundry, plumbing repairs, and schoolwork now.

Just to get the bragging rights for posterity settled, Brian have you had a chance yet to peek at the standings after the final round? Seems like there might be a glitch in the spreadsheet: seems a bit steep that the Scorpions dropped from 12th to 20th, and points only went from 217 to 226.

The Deathbowl round was another fun high-scoring ratfest. 3-2-0-0 (rats-rats-orcs-elves). Pity the kept-it-close and smoked-em bonuses don't apply, Squee!

Cheers,
Maureen

It does look a bit wierd Maureen, cos you only have 2/0/3 in your record which adds up to 5 not 6 games. so maybe you might have a few more points than 226. Maybe you should PM Brian.

Thanks for your kind words.

NO, this will not affect the 'Carnage'. In fact, I have been inspired by better TOs to create a unique board for this tournament.

Help is always appreciated. We can discuss it more on a 'Carnage in the Capital' thread (or PM me).

Actually it's worse than that Sad All the games are in the system, you can see them in the listings below the standings. The problem is that for some reason it's not adding your match to the standings. That's a bigger problem because that's a glitch in the code somewhere. I've looked it over quickly and it's not obvious what the problem is at a glance. I'll have to follow the data through the whole system and see what's actually happening.

I can help-out the new DB owners with entering the data if appropriate (as I am not a DB co-owner). I'm thinking that we need Brian's blessing or a NAF authority's blessing. I just saved a copy of the results from the DBIV standings, which includes all the games and all the scores. From looking at the NAF rankings page, looks like if we need the coach name / nick / NAF Number, the race played, the win/tie/loss info, and the TDs scored. Then pruning of the non-NAF results.

So what's missing are the names, NAF nicks and NAF number correlation and the races played. With all the people involved in the tourny that visit this site regularly, we can probably figure it out.

Joe, any thoughts?

OK, I took the liberty to start to compile the data for results entry.

I have found the NAF Nick and number for everybody except for two people:
Steve Lalancette (aka Zombie). If I remember correctly, he is not a NAF member.
Dany Lebire. If anybody knows Dany and can point me to his NAF ID or other info, please do so.

Note: Chris Wilson (Anthony_Times, or Anthony-times?) may have two NAF IDs. If Chris doesn't visit this forum, somebody may want to let him know.

Races: Remembered all, except for one. The Forest Dragons coached by Brie Robiechaud. I think that she coached Wood Elves, but can somebody please confirm?

All the results are still up on the Deatth Bowl web site. Tonight or tomorrow I'll post all the information that I compiled wrt the NAF Nicks, races and NAF numbers for people to double-check the data.

Hmm, sorry if this ends up as a double post but i've had a couple of posts and pm's lie about being sent!

Good work Marc-Andre! A pm to your good self was one of the things i believe got lost.

Re the deathbowl results, its all good except the deathbowl round, as we need the casualty figures to do the rankings properly.

The rules :

"The first five rounds of the 2006 Death Bowl will be played as 1 on 1 games and will be counted towards a coaches NAF rating as per the usual NAF rules. The final round of Death Bowl matches will effect your NAF rating in the following manner. In each group of four, the winner and 3rd place player will count as having played a standard game and the 2nd and 4th place players will count as having played a standard game. Determine how each player ranks by touchdowns scored, casualties caused, and finally if the previous two criteria do not determine a ranking, by overall tournament points for the first four rounds of play."

So we need Brian's records. He said DB would be a hard enter I believe for this reason but anyway he has promised me the data once I have entered the CCKO results.

Agreed, except for the DeathBowl game. The CAS determine who came in 2nd, 3rd and 4th place according to the DeathBowl rules. See Joe's last post.

This is unfortunate, as we have all the info that we need except for the CAS for the DeathBowl.

For my table, I don't recall exactly for the CAS.

Score:
Half Pint Hellions: 1 TD
Rest: 0 TD

So the Half Pint Hellions came in first.

For the CAS, I think that the Marienburg Swashbucklers and the Hutta Harda did quite a few CAS. But for the last 3 spots, it's a bit of a guess unless Dan, Billy or Cam can remember more details.

2nd and 3rd: Hutta Harda and Marienburg Swashbucklers
4th: Mighty Sweetbuns ...

Dan, Billy and Cam, does this make sense to you?

If we can't get the CAS info to be accurate enough (or can't get them at all), can we consider entering the results without the DB match? I know that it sucks, but if push comes to shove and it's the only way to get any results in, then maybe... Just an idea I thought I'd throw up in the air and see what people think.

The Skylights definitely out casulatied the Scared Hitless, so for our table the ranking would be:

1st - Necrophiliacs
2nd - Killer Bees
3rd - Skylights
4th - Scared Hitless

At my table i had a french dude, Glen, and Glens Buddy.

As for casualty's all i know is that i had caused the most but not sure on the numbers.

I'm sure Glen can verify my dominance in making all the players on the field my bitches.

The "french" guy was Manuel Leclerc. I thought that he played Necros, which is what I had in my table. But I'm now thinking that he may have coached Norse. Ben, Glenn and Rod all played against him, so hopefully they can tell us what race he really played.

I just checked my team sheet, I wrote it all down. I won 1-0-0-0, and I remember that my Half-Pint Hellions took ZERO casualties against (sounds odd, but its true!), while the Mighty Sweetbuns took the most casualties against. Are you sure it can't be CAS against that is the tie breaker? Laughing

Casualties for, it was the Marienburg Swashbucklers with 4 CAS caused, 1 death. Hutta Harda and Half-Pint Hellions had 2 CAS caused each (go Trees go! LOL), zero CAS for the Sweetbuns.

So with casualties ranking our #s 2-4, our standings are like this:

1)Half-Pint Hellions (1 TD, 2 CAS)
2) Marienburg Swashbucklers (0 TDs, 4 CAS)
3) Hutta Harda (0 TDs, 2 CAS)
4) Mighty Sweetbuns (0 TDs, 0 CAS)

I wouild appreciate it being recorded in NAF, how often will you see Halfers win a DB game??? Wink Sorry Marc-Andre, that will give you the loss. (IMO 1st vs 3rd, 2nd vs 4th works for a 2-1-0-0 score, but not a winner and 3 way tie. I'd personally give you all ties, but thats a discussion for another thread...)

Its 1st vs 4th and 2 vs 3rd for the rankings.

So Half-pint hellions get a win vs sweetbuns and Marienburg swashbucklers tie with hutta harda.

For NAF results, there's no way to enter a win for one player and a tie for the opponent, so 3 way ties for last place are not an option.

Wow your right, I even quoted it already on this forum!

Determine how each player ranks by touchdowns scored, casualties caused, and finally if the previous two criteria do not determine a ranking, by overall tournament points for the first four rounds of play."

yeah i know.
I think that possibly the fairest way, for NAF rankings, is to have you play a game against the player directly oposite yourself as your scoring tds against them and they are doing the same to you.
This way, no one will just let someone run in a TD too, as it affects their ranking Smile
I also think that current tournament order should determine table placing so, 1 is opposite 2 and 3 is opposite 4 just like in swiss stylee.

So yeah this would be HPH 1 vs 0 Hutta Harda and Marienburg S 0 vs 0 Mighty Sweetbuns.
It is unfair that the last place team gets a tie and the 3rd place team gets beat! But thems the rules for DBIV.

So its more important now to find out the missing casualties.

There's always unavoidalble quirks. If you went by phsyically opposite players you could get:
#1 vs #3, 2:1 TDs, and #2 vs #4 0:0 TDs, and 3 would get a loss while 2 and 4 get ties. I think Brian's solution was the right one.

However, a tie breaking penalty of TDs allowed might be good.

Yes then, the rules do stipulate 1st vs. 3rd, and 2nd vs. 4th. So that means that I lose to the Flings. Laughing

Joe, we will have to redo our table then. We will need the CAS info, as you say.

For the next DB, I think that 1st vs. 4th and 2nd vs. 3rd makes more sense than what is there now. Using opponents facing each-other could work too, and would make figuring-out opponents for rankings much easier.

Tie breaker of TDs conceded before casualties caused does appeal, in any sorting system. I don't have a problem with the player that conceded the most TDs losing, it seems very fair. If i let someone score 2 and no one else does I should lose!

If you are going to do the ranking system, 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3 is the way to go imo. that way the last person definitely gets the loss. 1 vs 3 is a little unfair re rankings.

My favorite options though is still having you play your ranking game against the person opposite you. As you are scoring against each other this is the closest simulation to the actual 1 vs 1 system that the rankings are based upon and therefore the fairest IMO.

Yeah I would. Makes NAF ranking the deathbowl round more reasonable.
Winner still takes the deathbowl, no matter how much I would prefer it to be the person with the most points at the end Sad Evil or Very Mad Mad Rolling Eyes

Also, it will add a bit more to the game too. Only played one deathbowl, but if you know you are playing against the guy opposite for rankings I don't see many situations where someone will allow a score (assuming they are a NAF ranked player).

I reported those a few pages back in the thread. You had 3 cas, pity none of your players could make it to the goalline before a Skaven scored. Razz Our table was a 5-0 Skaven tag team win Twisted Evil

Do you need a hand with this -- I dont know who is inputting the results but if you need things cleaned up or some ID's sorted let me know by PM.
Just trying to help

All done. The duplicate games deleted, the incorrect player in R5 changed and all the rankings updated.

27th Ranked Skaven in the US -- Squee!

For future Death Bowls, if you're going to be using Brian's scoring software, there is a glitch in it. I was only listed with 5 games instead of 6 in the final standings, and don't think that I really dropped from 12th to 20th after the final round

Cheers,
Mo

Since there was a mixup with the Standings & I was initialy recorded as having a 2-2-2 record & finishing 12th

But now after all fixes are made I ended up with one less tie & one more loss , so I'm now 2-1-3, so what place did I now finnish & can the new final standings please be posted?

Thanks, Rod
