Kick off the '07 BloodBowl Season in Canada's Capital City!

The Ottawa boys are holding a tournament on the final weekend in January.

It will be Swiss style using LRB5.

We have a couple of custom fields so far, Glen Jones stadium and Khorne Field.

More details and a tournament website will follow soon but we do have a location.

It will be held in the DOMINION TAVERN

This is right in the centre of Ottawa, a short stumble to the old Ottawa Jail, which is now handily a hostel http://www.hostelz.com/hostel/2107-HI---Ottawa-Jail-Hostel

As I said more details to follow!

Yeah, I will start buttering up my Mrs. now!

But JTB, you forgot to mention one of the best parts! The hostel is within staggering distance of the bar that Glenn Jones works at!

I will DEFINITELY make every effort to be there for this one!

You are sooo right. Not only Glen but Chris Wilson also works there and we are looking at a prize tie in with "The Dominion Tavern" as well. Maybe the overnight leader gets a decent bar tab as a handicap for day 2...........

That is taking the handicaps to a WHOLE new level! Very Happy Love it!

How are you going to do the painting award? As a "best painted" (just painting) or a "best team" which is painting, converting, theme, etc.? This will help me to decide what I might be doing for a team....

Also, is this going to be resurrection or league style tourney? Any skill choices before?

EDIT - Will team creation be with 1,000,000 gp?

Post subject:
I don't have the final version of the rules agreed upon yet. However it is likely that we will do a "best team" rather than "best painted" although painting is still important.

I will get the basic rules up before christmas so people have time to plan.

It will probably be a little bit more than 1 million gp and we have a few extra ideas too......

UPDATE!

Ok, so the tournament will be TV115.
All teams get 5FF (this is part of the TV115)
Up to 80000 can be spent on player improvements. No player may have more than one improvement.
Leaving 1020000 for players and rerolls etc
No special play cards.
No decision on inducements has been reached yet.
No skills gained after each game, but we are having a draft......

Improvement Draft
There will be an improvements Draft at the end of day one. Probably in the dominion Tavern.
Each team will get to draft one improvement in each of 4 rounds
There will be 1 copy of each improvement (including MA, ST, AG and AV but excluding extraordinary skills) available to draft for each 12 people present.
The coach in last place at the end of day one will get to pick first in each round, followed by the second last player then the third last player and so on.
The draft order in each round will be the same.

This should give a boost to the teams at the bottom and make the teams at the top have to try harder and maybe pick some interesting unusual skills to take their teams to final day glory.

So what will the cost be for the improvements? Will they be basically the cost of the skills as per the Team Value system in LRB5? So basically, that would mean that teams can buy four regular skills for their players, or one regular, and one doubles with 10K left over.

      Notorious_jtb wrote:

Glenn had explained that one to me at the Q'ermitt. Sounds like a great idea! Anything to shake up the regular choice of skills and making coaches think outside of their comfort zone is a good thing in my opinion. And having it in the Dominion is just gravy! Very Happy

JTB,

You should post a full description of how your draft skill choice thing is going to work in the "Hosting Tournaments" section, so that we can understand how this is going to work and also so that other tournaments may choose to start using this sytem.

My one concern with it, is what if you get some coaches who can't make up their mind for the skill they want between rounds? This could really slow things down!

Yeah, I'm finishing-up my Goblin team. So depending on the rule set that Joe and company pick, it may be the team that I bring. I don't think that I'll be able to complete my Khemri team in time, unfortunately. Really looking forward to giving these two teams a go on table top.

nice to see the tournament make it to a second page Smile

OK yeah, the improvement thing. I was thinking that for your 80 you buy any of the following;

+1 ST 50K
+1 AG 40k
+1 MV/AV 30K
Double skill 30k
regular skill 20k

i have no problem with people taking +1st, kinda fun to see if thats better than 4 players with block.....

Yeah your right, people can be slow. So we are gonna go all "real world" on them.
In the NFL you get a certain amount of time to pick your skills.. I mean player and if you don't do it in time you miss your pick, the same thing will happen here. you will get between 30s and 2 mins to make your pick. the amount of time depends on the number of people and it really shouldn't take long. I will probably put up a draft board anyway. Maybe some sort of central scouting report with the round that each skill is expect to leave in....
So I am not worried about coaches being too slow, they should be Wink

I am totally stocked about this tournament. Easy way to start my tournament career. Play in the town I live in, THEN decide if I want to do it more. If this goes well, I may become a lifer. SO EVERYONE GO EASY ON ME!?!?! Letting me win is optional, but recommended.

The hostel is even closer than staggering distance. I have staggered long distances before, this is more of a non existant distance, because I usually dont remember the walk cause it was so short.

No Overtime, to make things move along nicely.

Draft rules are pretty simple, which is always the best way IMO.

Coach who is bottom after day one picks first, followed by coach who is second bottom and so on, or to show it a bit more visually...

position / Draft selection order in each round
1 / 9
2 / 8
3 / 7
4 / 6
5 / 5
6 / 4
7 / 3
8 / 2
9 / 1

Each coach will get 30 seconds to pick a skill/improvement. Then the next coach will get a go. And so on until all the coaches have picked 1 skill/improvement. This process will be repeated 3 times, in the bar, directly after each other, until all the coaches have picked 4 skills/improvements. If you don't pick in your 30 seconds tough luck. Just like in the real world of the NFL draft you loose your pick.

You may pick any improvement or skill that it is legal for one of your players to take on any role of the dice, so no mutations on wood elves, but anyone is free to pick stat increases and skills that would require doubles. There will be no extraordinary skills in the draft.

There will be four rounds in the draft. Meaning each coach will get 4 improvements for his/her team. No player may recieve more than one improvement at this stage. Although a player who recieved an improvement at the begining of the tournament may gain a second improvement during the draft. You are only allowed to draft skills it is possible for your players to recieve, so no mutations for the wood elves, sorry.

I have no idea how many people will turn up, but if you read the skills/improvements list in the rule book you'll notice there is a limited supply So if we have 12 people each picking 4, thats fine. But 20 people each picking 4 won't work unless we have more than 1 copy of the skills/improvements, therefore, my model is, for each 12 coaches (or part of) who sign up for the tournament there will be a full set of skills/improvements (a set being one of each). So as an example if we got 36 coaches we would have 3 +1ST and 3 Diving Catch and infact 3 of all the improvements/skills.

A second e.g is if we get 20 players there will be 2 of each stat increase and 2 of each skill. In this example round one of the draft would go something like this;

Pick # Improvement
1 / +1 ST
2 / +1 AG
3 / +1 ST
4 / +1 AG
5 / +1 MV
6 / +1 AV
7 / Block
8 / Guard
9 / Block
10 / +1 MV
11 / Dodge
12 / +1 AV
13 / Juggernaut
etc

This should help the teams near the bottom do a bit better on day 2, maybe.....

We did this for tournament style league we ran once and it was a lot of fun.

Everyone should end up with a skill they might not normally take by the time your picking in round 4, which should be interesting too.

JTB,

I'm all good with doing the four games on the first day, as that helps move things along on the second day. However, I would strongly advise against the seventh game on the second day, as these thigns never run on time, and for those of us with a ways to travel and workt he next day, it is a real bitch getting home at 2 in the morning.

My suggestion - have four games on day 1, and then two on the second day. I did that for my tourney last year, and it helps to get people back on the road at a decent time.

Hahaha.

Ahh, I really should have kept it simple, I didn't need to give out so much information Wink

So "THE DRAFT" will occur at the end of day one, probably in a bar.

Each coach will get 30 seconds to pick a skill/improvement. Then the next coach will get a go. And so on until all the coaches have picked 1 skill. This process will be repeated 3 times, in the bar, directly after each other, until all the coaches have picked 4 skills/improvements. I really thought being in N America the draft concept would go over really easily, sigh.

The bit about the 12 players thing was a nod to the fact that I have no idea how many people will turn up, but if you read the skills/improvements list in the rule book you'll notice there is a limited supply Wink So if we have 12 people each picking 4, thats fine. So is it really 110K can be spent on the team with up to 80K being spent on improvements? Not trying to be a pain in the a$$, honest! Just need to be sure that I am making my team properly.

Spazz, I was going through the same thing last night, and had the same question. This can make a pretty big difference.

Joe, from the wording, I'm assuming that somebody could chose not to add any skills and spend the full 1.1Mil on player, rerolls, ACs and Cheerleaders?

BTW, can somebody chose to buy more FF with their 1.1Mil?

sigh. I guess I am out of practice with the writing.

Ok so you have 1.1 million to spend.
80k of which may or may not (at your own discretion) be spent on improvements.
You may buy cheerleaders and Asistant coaches.
No additional FF can be bought.

hope this helps.

I will finish the rule document this weekend and I'll try and get it online in its entirity.

Hey Joe,

Being the first 5.0 tourney that I will be attending, I am curious as to how the FF and FAME thing is going to be handled. Is each coach going to have equal FAME (i.e. +0) or are they going to roll for # of fans before the game start?

Hey Spazz,

yeah, i see where your coming from with the equal fame thing.
However, with equal FF it comes down to dice rather than who spent more on FF.
Dunno if everyone will do it this way but at least it starts 'fair'.
One thought is that it gives people who don't take coaches and cheerleaders a chance to equalise that by rolling well at the begining...
No strong opinion about it though.

Joe

p.s. this is a first for pretty much everyone tournament wise, so we may make all sorts of changes for the Deathbowl on theback of what works and fails to work in this baby.

You mentioned in an email (can't find it in this thread) that no inducements are allowed. To be fun and to "hope" to be competitive, Halflings and Goblins benefit greatly from inducements. For the most part, Deeproot and Master Chef for Halflings, and Bribes and Stars for the Gobbos. I think that Dan was planning to bring Halflings. I was pondering on bringing Goblins, but probably not either way.

This is not a problem, but I wanted to make sure that you (and Dan) were aware of this. For the future, it may be interesting to introduce special inducement exceptions for the Halfings and Goblins.

Good Call Marc-Andre.

When I mentioned no inducements I was thinking of most regular teams.
I will have a think and maybe a couple of inducements will be available for purchase as part of the team for the flings and gobos, just to make them semi competitive. Although I don't want it to be too easy for them Wink

Hey... I did actually win three games at Death Bowl with the Flings.

Ok Ok Two of them was against other Fling teams...but I did win one against Necro.

Yes I am bringing them ( Flings ) to the tourney. A buddy of mine will be coming also. Think he is bringing Undead.
So from Montreal it looks like there will be 2 of us.

Really looking forward to this. 7 games in one weekend.....Awesome!!!!!

Just keep me updated on any news towards the Flings.

I was also wondering if there could besome consideration made to ensure that people who do come to the tourney do not face off (in the first round) against people that are from their area. That happened to me a few times now, and it kind of sucks. I like the tourneys as an opportunity to meet new people and see how other people might take a different spin on tactics/team selection, etc.

I understand that after the first round then pairing go according to how well you are doing, so I (along with the other TBBf members) will all be floating to the top! Cool

That's right, I said it! Less than two weeks people, let the trash talk begin! Because once all that trash is heaped up, the Brampton Blowflies will claw their way to the top and look down on the broken bodies they have accumulated to get there! Victory will be mine! Twisted Evil

Attendance is looking good. I would gestimate about 20 will be here on the day, which is enough. Still hoping for 40 though Smile Smile

1) You boyz better put on a good tourney, as I am getting a lot of flak from the missus! Razz

2) TBBF actually stands for - Toronto: Blood Bowl's Finest!

We are going to sweep this tourney and leave you Ottawa boyz scrambling to rebuild your shattered dreams of Blood Bowl victory!

The award ceremony is going to look like this:

Overall winner: Brampton Blowflies (7-0-0)
Most Casualties: Brampton Blowflies (average of 3 kills a game!)
Most Touchdowns: Brampton Blowflies (too disgusting to mention!)
Least scored against: Brampton Blowflies (shut-out every team!)
Best painted: Brampton Blowflies (a given) Cool
Most Casualties against: Rats of Nimh (Ben of TBBF)
Wooden Spoon: Missionary Harlots (Bud of TBBF)
Best Sportsmanship: Glenn Jones (for not crying like a baby after getting repeatedly beaten by the TBBF at the tourney!)

So I suppose we can let you have the one prize, but the rest will be coming back to the T-Dot with their rightful owner! ME! Laughing

Thanks for the info Joe, you anticipated my question of whether the players with skills before the torney can take more at the draft - that is good to know that they can take one more!

One other question - are players limited to the skills that they can normally take? I know you mentioned mutations, but what about big guys (and stunties and mummies, etc.) taking general skills (or other skill areas they don't normally have access to)?

A player may take any skill he may normally take on doubles or normal rolls so if he can't get it, he/she can't have it.

So in the case of mutations, only 3/4 teams can take them at all. But pretty much everyone can have general/agility/passing/strength skills on doubles so can draft them.

oh yeah... in your dreams Very Happy

Thanks for the additional information Joe.

A few additional details wrt directions (if I may).

The address is:

Dominion Tavern
33 York Street
Ottawa, ON K1N5S7
Phone: (613) 241-7706

Here is a mapquest map showing the location and the 417.
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?formtype=address&addtohistory=&address=33%20York%20Street&city=Ottawa&state=ON&zipcode=K1N&country=CA&geodiff=1

A suggested route:
From 417 East or West, take Nicholas exit and get on Nicholas Street. Nicholas goes North only, so that's easy. Nicholas Street will become Waller Street. At the end of Waller Street, turn left on Rideau Street, then right on Dalhousie Street. Then turn left on York.

Joe, any suggestions for parking? I'm thinking that the parking spaces in the middle of York Street should be available early in the morning? I often park at the Ideal Parking garage on the South side of York (also accessible from George Street).

What a freakn' weekend! Plenty of booze, plenty of Blood Bowl and plenty o' fun!

An awesome job done by Glenn and Joe for running the tourney, and I look forward to future tourneys!

Have to say that one of my highlights for thr tourney was having the opporunity to play AngryRob's Chaos vs my Nurgle on the Khorne Field (which is a breathtaking piece of work! - you guys need to get pics on here!)

Was a real pleasure to meet you all, and to see some of you again. Was great to meet Eggball as he was the one who inspired the colourfor my rotters on the team. He and I tied for Best Team award, and he won the tie-breaker. All I can say, is "Get some pics up of that norse team of yours - they are frikkin' awesome!" (Oh yeah - and lookin at his team gives me some more "inspiration"! Wink)

Look forward to seeing you all again at the Canadian Open, then again at the Q'ermitt! The Canadian Open is only a month and a half away! Just enough time for me to make up a new team! Laughing

Now all I have to do is face work. Get the through the day man...... one hour at a time.... baby steps..... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Joe,

Just wanted to say that I though that the "Draft" method of choosing skills was probably the best method of tournament skill choices that I have ever seen! Really cool and lots of fun to try out! I felt like it was Christmas on Sunday morning and I couldn't wait to try out all my new presents! (Oh boy! A Tentacle in my stocking! Very Happy)

You should post the rules for this more clearly and clearly titled in the "Hosting Tournaments" section.

Thank you to everyone who came to the Capital City Kick-OFF 2007, from Glen (twodiceblock) and the rest of us who did the stuff.

You guys played harded and partied harder! Ben's mid taxi ride pyschedelic yodelling will be fondly remembered for quite a while.
From our perspective, It went remarkably well, especially since it was our first tournament! Although we may get big chess timers for the next tournie, DBV, so each coach has 1 hour to play their game... Wink

The big prizes went to:

Most Sporting: Taxal - Mighty Sweetbuns (Halfling)

Best Painted: Eggball - Mechanicsville Mjolnirs (Norse)
(after tie breaker with Spazzfists Brampton Blowflies (Nurgles Rotters) as you mentioned Craig Wink )

Most CAS: Bellowthunderslam - The Unholy Nightmares (undead)
(courtesy of those friendly chaps on the Mighty Sweetbuns, 10Cas in one game is alot!)

Most TDs: Bucephulous - The Astros (high elf)

3rd place: Ben - Dwarf Giants (Dwarf)

2nd place: Talons - Purely Tanked (Dwarf)

1st place: Notorious_jtb - Da Avalanche (Orc)

I await the japes about winning a tournament I entered the data for with baited breath!

thanks again

I will put a full and clear explanation up this week, but not today, too tired to be able to write properly.

p.s. I love the draft too. +1MA and sprint on Gothmog (Orc Blitzer extraordinare) got me both TDs vs Cramy for the tie in the last game. (not bad for the 32nd and 64th (and last) picks in the draft Smile

WOW !!!!!

Totally amazing job Glen and Joe on the C.C.K. this weekend.

Myself I know I had a blast, even if I didn`t win a game. What do you expect with Flings.

As always all my opponents were great fun to play against. Got to laugh at myself and well, made you all laugh at me too.

Glad I was able to help out the Undead win most CAS, and the High Elves win most TD`S.

I was 1st with Flings in Canada before this week-end. Probably dropped a few spots with my amazing 2 ties - 4 loses. lol !!!!

See you all in March, and I will not be bringing Flings to the Open, so here`s hoping that i`m not to much of a push over.

i am not totally sure how K value works but, ours is 7 with 14 coaches entered. but we have 2 more coaches results to enter so maybe it will go up to 8..... with maybe a bit more of a rankings boost for everyone?

We had 2 new naf members and a couple more tournament debuts at CCK, so hopefully we can work on getting the numbers and K values to increase Smile
And then Spazzfist you shall be king of the festering pile of ooze that is the Nurgle Rotters coaching ranks Wink

This game is fuzzy in my head. All I remember for sure is that I won by one TD. I'm trusting my sheets for this one. Both my roster sheet and my results sheet say the same thing though, so I'm pretty confident of the result.

ok, seeing as how both Marc-Andre and myself have the same thing written down, we'll go the democratic way and say 2-1. I don't think 2-1 is much different from 1-0 in the rankings anyway.
