Post subject: Spike! Magazine 2010: September 11-12: Surrey, B.C., Canada
Last summer's event was a great success and we were proud to again hold an event using only 40mm-scale boards and throwing meters, as well as being the first to introduce DGT Easy game timers to add the clock element to the game. We have had nothing but positive feedback on the boards and clocks with the only negative feedback being the price of drinks at the bar. Wink

With 48 registered coaches within our own league, this time we look forward to hosting the biggest BB tournament Canada has ever seen. We look forward to seeing last year's participants return and hope to see a lot of new faces as well.

For those of you unfamiliar with the SPIKE!, the SPIKE! Magazine Blood Bowl Championship is the Canadian Blood Bowl Major. Four "Major" tournments take place annually, each in a different country. They are:

1. The Dungeonbowl, in Duesseldorf, Germany
2. The Blood Bowl, held each year in the spring at GW HQ in Nottingham, England
3. The Spike! Magazine Trophy, held each year in early fall in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
4. The Chaos Cup, October, held each year in the fall at the Battle Bunker Chicago, Illinous, USA

No worries Dennis - I understand the 'one out of town Blood Bowl tourney a year' thing. ZlurpeeBowl should be a blast.

As for Spike 2011, we will not have a pre-reg available until after Spike 2010 is here and gone. As for the date, we moved it this year to the second week of September because we wanted to get it out of the summer as this was hurting our numbers, but still wanted to keep it close to our date last year so it's still warm in Vancouver and the Rockies are still drivable for our bloodbrothers coming from Alberta. Also after talking to Tom we wanted to keep it 2 weeks away from the Chaos Cup for those Europeans that might want to play in both. That said Spike 2011 will most likely be the same week and month as this year.

Hope to see you out in 2011. Very Happy

No worries Colin. I know what it's like to have to book all your holidays at work a near year in advance. Sorry about the date change this year but it was better for us in the long run for all the reasons I stated above. I don't imagine that we will be changing our new September date (weekend after Labour Day) as it would just lead to further confusion to those who might want to make the trip in the future. I was happy to see you out in 2009 and looking forward to seeing you in 2011 if this fits your schedule. Very Happy

So, can I assume that the Spike will be held in this general time-frame for the foreseable future. September is probably more workable that October, so maybe I can start planning for next year.

Only problem I would see with planning to go next year is that the 2nd World Cup is being held in October of 2011 and I want to plan for a team of us from Canada to attend. Would love to attend the Spike but don't think this year will be a possibility as I am already committed to attend a tourney in September. If for some reason the World Cup plans fall through then I would gladly attend.

What are they thinking 3 majors within a month of each other
they might as well move Dungeon bowl to either August or November

Spike 2007 was held in June in Calgary. Spike 2008 and 2009 were in August in Vancouver and we decided to move it to September this year for several reasons already stated. I think it's a great idea to have it close to the Chaos Cup so Europeans can turn a North American vacation into a BB fest.

The Spike! Magazine will be held Sept. 11th&12th. The Chaos Cup Sept. 25th&26th probably. The Blood Bowl was held in May last year I believe, and Dungeonbowl 2010 is being held March 13th&14th. That's 2 in one month, or a fortnight like tennis majors, and then one more 6 months away, and the other 2 months after that. This is not 3 majors within a month of each other.

As far as a perfect calendar formation for the Majors, like 1 every 3 months, this has never happened. As much as I admit that I'm conscience of when the other Majors occur when picking a date, I've talk to Tom but I have not talk to the other tournament organizers when it comes to coordinating dates around the Blood Bowl or Dungeonbowl.

As for the Spike and the Chaos Cup being in the same month again it's deliberate. We wanted to move the Spike out of the summer due to our lack of gamers in heat, and Tom wanted to move the Chaos Cup up a couple of weeks into September to get away from the cold.

As there are few North American tournaments compared to Europeans, having them within two weeks of each other makes it more likely that somebody from Europe might attend both. Plenty of guys take vacations for 2 weeks. Won't happen that often I admit, but it's far more likely than if they were months apart. Same goes for Central North Americans that might want to go to both.

Bottom line is September works for both of us, but the fortunate byproduct of that is cross-travelling. I'd like nothing better than to organize the Spike, wrap up, and then hop on a flight to play in the Chaos Cup 2 weeks later.

Dark Elves are a pretty good team for 6-game swiss resurrection tournament with TV 110. The right skill picks can make that team really annoying for tournament play especially when you don't have to worry about getting hurt as your team regenerates inbetween games.

Luckily this tournament is far enough from the OFCC's to make it possible. Your brother/cousin/whatever gave me a decent lashing at the WFB OFCC for not trying to make it. He was right though, and I really want to experience it this year.

There will be a painting award, right? I'm quite proud of my 2nd edition Dark Elves, and I hope they can be competition fo the award. I don't have any significant conversions, but I think the actual painting is quite nice.

I assume all non-GW models are off limits, correct?

Mike is my brother.

Yes there is a painting award. If you play a non-GW team you will still be graded on your paint scores as far as Best Overall goes, but to win the individual painting award you will need to play with GW models as this is a GW Major. Proxies are fine so long as they are GW proxies.

Yes we will still host open gaming on Day 1 for people who want to get together and play Catann, Puerto Rico, Chaos of the Old World, Arkham Horror, Dominion, Munchkin or whatever. Really just an excuse to hang out and drink at the hotel.

Looking forward to September! Very Happy

Just heard on 3 Dice Block that someone was working on a website for the Spike event. I did not catch the website name but I wanted to make sure that whoever was doing this knew that the NAF pays to have a hosting site and domain for the Spike already (and the other 3 majors as well).

http://www.thespiketrophy.com/

So rather than setup (and unnecessarily pay for) a brand new domain and hosting site ... I URGE (strongly) to use the one the NAF pays for if that was not the plan.

Heh. Why is this the first time we are hearing about this Tom? Smile The last update on that address is Spike! 2005!? Mad Calgary had hosted it since (2007), and this is our third year (2008-2010).

Thanks for the heads up. Very Happy Unfortunately we have aready paid for our current domain name: www.spiketournament.com for our 2010 event, just as we paid for spike2009.com last year and spike2008.com before that.

But we will use that NAF address you have suggested above in future. Smile

If you can send information regarding logging in and editing that site to my brother Mike (civilian_number_two on this site), or at least let us know who to contact to receive this info that would be greatly appreciated.

Again please keep your eyes open and your ears pealed to the whereabouts of the Spike! Magazine trophy itself. Shocked We are still trying to get GW to locate this trophy that they believe may be in one of 2 warehouses in the US. Fingers crossed.

Thanks Tom,

Okay ... forgive me ... because I will be shouting ... but not at you.

BECAUSE THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE PART OF THE JOB OF THE TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR POSITION OF THE NAF!

Sorry ... I'm not an elected official or even a volunteer helper for the NAF ... and it upsets me to hear that you've paid for domains and hosting for an NAF major for a couple/few years when its been part of the role of the Tournament Director position for the NAF to let you know that resource is something the NAF pays for for all 5 Majors.

IE ... I have NO idea why you are just hearing about it now or why I am the one having to tell you.

Also if you go and look at the tournament director 2010 election thread ... you'll see one of my questions was about whether the nominees would make sure this part of their job was done properly as it is clear its been neglected in the past.

Angry rant aside ... I'll get the information to you on how to use the free site for the future of the Spike.

Awesomesauce. I understand completely Tom. Thank you for your candour - I love reading a good rant. Again I had no idea about that site other than bumping into it one day way back when after bumping into this clearly outdated site:

http://www.bloodbowlmajors.com/

I share your distress in hindsight given that we have probably paid between $30-50 the last few years with domain names for Spikes 08-10, and the money isn't the issue, but that money is being wasted on upkeeping the domains of these outdated sites when they should have been pointed out long ago to those who would have kept these sites alive and who they were originally intended for.

Oh well water under the bridge. Like all the confusion our club experienced regarding entering our results into this site for Spikes 2008 & 09, in the end I'm just glad it has been resolved.

Thanks again Tom for letting us know about this. I agree that this isn't the way I should have found out about free domain space for major organizers, and the length of time to not be aware of it is unreasonable, but in the end I'm just glad we know about it.

Mike (civilian_number_two) or Kavin (Warpstone) will be able to make use of this site straight away - even if it is linking the NAF Spike domain to our own for this year and then going with the NAF Spike address completely for 2011.

Looking forward to updating that site and bringing it up to speed. Smile Again just send the info to Mike or Kavin as it will be one of those two that will be running our web show.

Cheers,
Craig.

Interesting. I didn't know about the domains being run by NAF either.

Well at least this shows one thing: that it is totally worth promoting events on the NAF boards as people in the know check in on them!

Whilst we may weep for the duplication of the website at least the Spike is in good hands now.

Hmmm....a Spike without Scum is a recipe for an inferior team to sneak away with the title. (Yeah...only way Clan-Skaven had a prayer of winning was the one Spike! where his arch-nemesis was off in uniform for an extended tour..and look how THAT turned out! Laughing )

It may be last minute, but I might end up with a "sudden change in plans" that clears me to race out there.

And I may just have the custom team of VERY old GW mini's for it too all painted in true bloodbowl terror colours...

...if I can figure out how they are going to carry a football with plungers. Laughing (Still remember Jervis dropping his jaw in shock with "How on EARTH did you get those outside of England?" Dude...I was BASED in England with your bloody army...sheesh.)

Okay, massive planning on a whim, if its a good excuse to hang out with over 48 of the awesome people and players, I am so down with the sacrifice. Twisted Evil

Well another Spike! come and gone, and once more it never fails to entertain!

Kavinay and I had a great chat before the "Real Finals" at the table there. Laughing We knew it would all come down to which one the Horned Rat Favoured to win it all, and yes for once the Weather Gods smiled and allowed pleasing weather all game. (For the Record, Game One: Pissing Rain all game. Game Two: Pissing Blizzard on the opening kick-off. Game Three: Mothersmurfing Blizzard all game. Game Four...starts promising, but Kick-off two and Blazing Sun. Oh and Game Six? 2nd half we're back to Blazing Sun again. So clearly it was NOT meant for me to be an End-zone hog this year.)

And that 1st half that really wasn't Kavinay playing well, in fact it looked like he was going to go down in a game where nothing was going to plan for either team. Took his fellow Skaven to tell him to "Start making luck and acting like a Skaven" for that game to finally go the way it did. Kudos!

And...his final match? Hehe, who says skaven clans don't talk? "Best scouting report EVAH!" Almost makes one wish he hadn't ran into to me in game three, might have been a whole different final result.

Another top six finish...if da Scum aren't in the running, it ain't a Spike!

Now if they'd hurry up and actually fix the Tournament Goblin rules, we can finally see what we've all wanted, a Tier three team taking it all. (which is why World cup teams should be forced to take one along.)

Our hosts as always are a blast, and once more the players are a driving reason we keep coming out, either well loved and despised opponents; one of whom I threw his dice for him when they kept betraying him; to even just people we dream of some day having that perfect match up against. Spike! is alive and well in British Columbia! (Take that foul Battle Bunker, and where's our trophy you frakkers!)

Now to give this Underworld team a gander... Twisted Evil

FYI the Battle Bunker is no more, as is GW Canada. They dissoved the whole thing and have made it a North American operation that is based out of the States.

I think Dave's comment was more of a 'look at what's been done without any support from the parent company' rather than an attack on anything currently existing in Oakville. Nobody is aware more than us Craig that GW Canada is no more, and we have the zero-poster support and the bungled lost trophy to prove it.

Btw - do the Trolls still exist in Canada Craig? Dave was thinking that they might still be in the old Oakville head office. Anybody know for sure? It would be a little distressing to think that the Spike! Trophy never in fact left Canada and it's been sitting there all along right under our noses, but to my knowledge it's the last place to look if the Trolls in fact still exist in Oakville. Any info you or other Easterners have as to what in fact remained from GW Canada would be greatly appreciated. Very Happy

Thanks in advance,
Craig.

The building is shut down. There is nothing there no more.

Thanks Craig. That's one less theory we needed to explore resolved. After 18 months of searching from everybody up to Jervis Johnson we can finally put this search to bed and resolve that the Spike! trophy is lost for good. C'est la vie.

Now begins the process of reforging the Spike! Magazine Trophy. Making it look identical to the original without the original mold will be difficult, but certainly not impossible. Note that this new Trophy will look like the copper/brass original, only much larger so the trophy can be held or worn.

Tracking down the original mold would be a task solved only by the older NAFers from the UK. The trophy was originally made there, and they are the only members that go back far enough to possibly remember. Dave? Simon? James (DW)?

NAF Results for Spike! 2010 are up. 43 out of 48 coaches who participated at the Spike! were either members before or signed up on the weekend. That's definitely our best turnout for coaches and NAF members combined so we're happy with that.

For full round by round for all NAF sanctioned matches check here:

Also, pictures of all the winners are now up on the results page.
