I've booked the loughborough and reading (Spiky) tournaments MONTHS in advance, and after the initial month's "No you aren't going" it's now "Are you sure we can afford it". Next month I'm expecting "Well when you're there don't drink too much" or something...

Oh for reference purposes, my PayPal email is:

Nah it takes away some of the excitement and at least one person is going to complain that their opponent knew they were going to play xxxx so chose a different lineup.

Although i'd found that fun for taunting (im french!!! Laughing) doubleskulls might be right.

Although, when you build a roster, you make it for 6 random games, not just one. And actually, i don't mind losing my first game at all since it takes away some pressure and you can just enjoy yourself for 2 days after that. Wink

Just a quick update on prizes...

I received the pack from GW this morning and inside I found:

2 Vampire Lords
5 Vampires (both these due out in December AFAIK)
2 new Elf/D.Elf secret weapons
2 other new Elf/D.Elf secret weapons (possibly Hubris Rakarth if some of the threads on TBB are to be believed)

and some other stuff. This makes the list of prizes now:

1 Vampire Team (minus a Vampire and the Thralls, but they'll be converted humans anyway)
1 Vampire Lord
4 x Elf/D.Elf secret weapon players
Signed 2003 Annual
Shadowforge Nun team
4 x Heresy Football Boris

and I am still not finished looking for prizes!! And not to mention the main trophy and the minor ones themselves... If this lot hasn't convinced you to buy a ticket then what the hell will? And for those of you that HAVE, get recruiting your mates! I'll try and get some pics up later tonight, although my webcam is shockingly poor

Indigo - Jul 12, 2003 - 02:07 AM
Post subject:
thankfully it's stopped and the trophy is clean Smile

However.... here's a pic of the trophy.

You might notice that this trophy looks thinner than the one on the other thread (or your pack). Also, the laces have carved grooves around them and the crystal base is a little taller than the other pic. What has happened is this... the place I bought it from used the picture of the 11" tall trophy to advertise this one, but didn't have any entry at all for the 11" one. I've bought this trophy, which still rocks, but thought what I'd get was the larger one. Now the larger one is 3 x the price of this one, so I can't really upgrade to it... All it means is I've sent a snotty email of complaint to the manufacturers complaining that what they advertised, and what I thought I was buying, is not actually what I was buying. Needless to say, I was immensely pissed off (Evil or Very Mad) and told them I can't buy from them again as I don't know if what I am seeing is what I get.

However, that's not to say that what we now have as the trophy sucks. It still looks absolutely awesome, especially on it's base, and the wife assures me that a quick comparison between the pics in your packs and the real thing doesn't really make them look different. I still think it's a class trophy, I'm just annoyed with the false advertising from the sellers.

And I've checked - it looks GREAT on a mantlepiece Wink
Gonna make me try harder to win it now Very Happy
LouisX - Jul 12, 2003 - 07:25 AM

Indigo - Jul 14, 2003 - 01:51 AM
Post subject:
It does indeed - I'm just pissed off they advertised the bigger version. I've written a scathing letter of complaint so you never know they might send me the big one for free, and we can use this for 2nd place!! Not that I expect that for a minute though....

schedule is 10-6 each day, although it may run over slightlyon both/either day. As far as I know, some of the ECBBL are commuting, although it takes about 1.5 hours to drive there so f**k knows what the trains will be like.

It might be possible to get a flight into stansted and then get the train up from there, or maybe even the JetLink (a coach service that stops in Cambridge)

if people are arriving by train in Cambridge, or bus, we should be able to sort out lifts to pick them up and avoid taxi fares.

Referees
Although we are all playing for fun & the love of the game, there are going to be times we forget or mis-interpret rules. 9 times out of 10 this will be resolved quickly and amicably between the individual coaches but sometimes an outside influence will be needed.

To provide an impartial way of providing a solution, I need a few people to volunteer as referees. Although I plan on filling one of these roles, as well as using my brother as both the odd-man-out and a referee if needed, I'd appreciate it if anyone who wouldn't mind volunteering for this would PM or mail me. There are no extra perks for this job, and all you will be doing on the day is pointing out rules in the LRB or getting them to roll a die to sort it out. I figure that 1 ref per 10 coaches is more than enough, so I need 3 refs at best, but can scrape by with 2.

Based on the number of applications I get, I'll pick a number at random then post them on here. Because refs will be players too, if the situation is such that people could complain of bias then a ref will not be allowed to pass a decision on their own game, or one that could have a direct influence on their tournament standing.

I'm playing too, hopefully. My brother is the "ood man out" in case we get an odd number of people coming, but if we don't he's entering scores with the missus.

I really don't think we'll need standalone referees, everyone coming to a tournament generally has a pretty good grasp on the rules and is there for a good time anyway.

Also worth pointing out that the Cambridge Wargames Club has kindly donated one of the GD 2001 Chaos Lord figures (the kind Anthony used to make his coach) as a prize. You might know that these fetch a fair price on ebay and are hard to get (hell i want one!) so the winner will either be able to convert it into a Chaos coach or sell it on ebay to get some 2nd ed figs Smile

They are also going to be playing Dungeonbowl while we're playing and may bring their stuff to the pub afterwards, so there should be plenty of BB, Deathbowl & Dungeonbowl games going on. And the quiz Wink

Quick update...

We've now passed the 30 day barrier!! I started planning this 3 months or so ago and now we've reached the 1 month mark! Still got some things to do, mainly sorting trophies, but it's coming along nicely. Trophy

Sadly, Longfang has had to pull out, but the waiting list for extra places meant that lackey (NAF) jumped right in there! Also, Oliver (GW Cambrdige staff and BB vet) has had to pull out - since 90% of the GW Cambridge staff are playing he was ordered from on high that he needed to work!

Finally, Marcus has not been seen online or in real life for quite some time now. Due to some problems in real life, it was expected he'd have trouble making it so I've decided that if someone who really wants to come is willing to pay now then I will free up his place - I'll hold it open as long as possible though.

To the people who've paid but not received packs - I'll be sending the next batch out today as I got the newest batch of tickets done yesterday...

Oh - almost forgot - when Oliver dropped out, Kerrunch (Chaos Cup 2003 winner, and member of the Spanish team) signed up... the competition just got a whole lot harder Wink

well I've made the final award/prize list, matching each of the awards to the relevant trophy & prize. Do people want to see how I've decided to split the prizes up? If more people say yes than no in the next week or so then I'll post the list.

Something else though... for putting up with about 4 months of nothing but Blood Bowl, occaisonal mad-panics about gettting into debt over this tourney, helping out on the day and generally being a BB widow, I thought it might be nice to get a bunch of flowers and a box of chocoloates for the missus (I did initially think about a painted Zara figure, or a Shadowforge one, but she wouldn't appreciate it Wink). Dan Titan then suggested we pass a hat round and see if people were willing to pay a couple of pounds into the pot for it, but I've came up with an alternate idea....

I've got a signed 2003 Annual (Andy Hall & JKL at the mo) and I thought it might be a nice idea to get all the competitors to sign it and maybe leave a short message. Then, rather than simply "add it on" to a random award, I could do a raffle. Tickets would be something like 50p each (maybe a maximum of 5 tickets each?) and then winner would get the Annual as a good memento. The money would then be used to get flowers & chocolates for her.... what do you think about it?

I'm in the enviable position of having more prizes than there are awards to win Rolling Eyes Very Happy

My wife sends your wife her sympathies and says that she can relate.

So you have set specific prizes for the different trophies. That's interesting, the way we work it out on this side of the pond we usually let the winners pick which prize they want from the pool of available prizes. Of course if the guy running the tournament isn't carefull in the order he calls out the winners you can have third place getting a better prize than first. What I'll be doing at the Death Bowl is announcing all the winners and then letting each winner in turn select their prize. Starting with 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Best Painted, Most TD's, Most Casualties, and lastly most Sporting. The Wooden Spoon will be a set prize, though I'm not sure what that is yet Confused

Its just annoying to go to all the hassle & expense of travelling to a tournament and end up playing against your usual opponents.

Surely half the point of tourneys is to play against people you haven't played against before?
Indigo - Sep 12, 2003 - 02:41 AM
Post subject:
I do tend to agree, although it might be kinda hard in a tournament with such a small number of coaches playing. It might be possible to sort out the first round so no ECBBL people play others, but it would probably be too much hassle for subsequent rounds.

What do people think, do they like the idea of not allowing matches against "regular" opponents or should the first round be random and then they play whoever they are drawn against (unless they've already played them)?
Mordredd - Sep 12, 2003 - 03:46 AM
Post subject:
Random is better. With such a large proportion from the ECBBL they're going to be playing each other at some point, so why not at the beginning?

Besides, it seems like there's some team tactics going on here. Ensure that maximum possible 12 ECBBL wins in round 1 to increase the chances of taking the cup! Wink

By the way, is anyone travelling down from near Birmingham?
Deathwing - Sep 12, 2003 - 04:46 AM
Post subject:
Well, at both the Dutch open and Rendez-vous the first rounds were drawn from three different pools to ensure a good mix of nationalties..i.e. the draws were weighted so that the travelling foreigners played against nationals. That IMO is nice way of doing things as it promotes international interaction.
However, this tournament is primarily UK attended with only a few international attendees, and keeping club members apart is a different kettle of fish.

Mordredd is right, there may be 12 ECBBL members there, but 5 of those are currently ranked in the top 25. Keeping them apart in the first round would significantly help out the ECBBL as a whole. Hell, they are bound to end up playing each other anyway (and you can't play the same opponent more than once), so why give them 'in effect' a leg up?
I am very opposed to this. It amounts to seeding the ECBBL.
Let Nuffle sort it out.
Doubleskulls - Sep 12, 2003 - 05:18 AM
Post subject:
Confused I guess I hadn't really thought about the "effective seeding" side effect.

Its a fair point and one I'm happy enough to concede. I'll just have to pray to Nuffle that I get a few against non-ECBBLers.

I do feel that one of the main points of going to a tourney is to play as many new people as possible (or at least irregular opponents - Woody I hope I get a chance at some revenge after my Sunday meltdown at Tulips).

Well, because being arrogant buggers we are convinced the last 2 round will all be ECBBl at the top tables Smile

I guess it doesn't matter, but it is possible for one of the ECBBL to play every game against another blackshirt.

It would be nice to get one guarrentied game vs a non regular opponent.

How about doing the first round off overall NAF ranking? So top two NAF coaches there play each otehr and so on down, with the non NAF guys randomised as normal?

Just been looking at the timetable...
There's no gap between Games 2 and 3 in the afternoons. Now you're not going to get Game 3 underway 2 hours after Game 2 gets underway.
(Sat) Game 2 starts 14.00, Game 3 starts at 16.00. Now Game 2 is going to finish at 16.00. Then you've got to get all the results entered before you can announce the next round (while those of us that smoke go outside and do so), after which players have got to move their stuff to the tables etc.
Game 2 at 14.00, Game 3 at 16.00, Day End at 18.00 just ain't gonna be happening.
Not that I'm bothered of course, as long as they're not intending to kick us out the venue at a certain time or anything.

Good point. Then again, at the WPS challenge thingy there were only a couple of games that overran.... but as I remember, each and every round 'someone' over ran anyway. Always a nice idea to have a 'breather space', otherwise known as 'muck up time'.

It all depends on how practiced the data input team is and what system is being used to choose the next opponents as in theory if it is only one or two games that overun then 95% of the gamers can be on to their next game before they finish.....

To everyone who has paid me from this last Saturday forwards - due to the impending postal strike and the chance your packs won't reach you I will not be sending out any more packs. However, since many people like to keep the packs for posterity, I will have your pack & ticket on the day.

Remember to download the info pack for the rules, and the schedule is as follows:

Saturday

10am - Arrival and registration
11am - First match starts prompt
1pm - Lunch break and Painting Judging (looks like I have to stay in the hall & watch stuff, as well as do scores Rolling Eyes)
2pm - Second match starts
4pm - Assuming all scores in and no problems, third match starts.
6pm (ish) - Day One ends.

Sunday

10am - Arrival, hangover recovery, maybe even free paracetamol Wink
10:30am - Match four starts
12:30 - Lunch
13:30 - Match Five
15:30 - Match Six
17:30 - Awards Ceremony
18:00 - Tournament End. "Mr. Taxi" Candlish starts taking people to the station.

I've been asked by the church hall owners that we keep the noise down on Sunday morning as there is a service downstairs, although she has no problem with the associated applause etc. for the awards ceremony. I figured most people would be too hungover to want to make any noise on Sunday morning anyway. Also, parking in the church car park may be somewhat limited on the saturday morning due to a jumble sale but there should be plenty in neighbouring streets (with no fear of being towed away either Wink Embarassed)

There's one called the castle just round the corner from the hall for lunchtimes and nightimes (we already play BB in there, and there's a good section we can all sit away from the locals).

I'll get a map off multimap and mark some pubs on it and post it on here.

I did try to get something more suitable than a church hall, but they're cheaper!! And there wasn't anything big enough really. Still, when I've got more time and people coming next year I'll get something better Smile

Following a discussion on TBB I wanna hear more people's opinions:

I was planning on playing, although I've already decided I'm not eligible for the Most Sporting & Best Painted awards and probably the actual trophy too. I'm a little paranoid (and perhaps modest) that people will think "Indi organised this, he's a nice bloke so have a 5 for sportsmanship"

I don't really want to miss this chance to improve my NAF ranking with Humans, although I really don't want to have to say "And the winner of this year's CamCarnage is.... errrr..... me. Yay me."

Currently unsure if I should be allowed to be allowed to win the Most TD/CAS awards...

What do people think - should I be allowed to win any of the awards? Should I be allowed in the raffle for the annual? Should I be allowed to play AT ALL?!? (I do have able bodied helpers to enter results and stuff, and Tim Ibe's spreadsheet is great so it shouldn't be a problem when it comes to admin).

Thanks for the flowers Smile - I'll have the sheet available to the public soon.

In Mannheim all 3 Organizers played and it was quite some stress for us as i had to run the rankings, enter results on Sunday, schedule the following rounds, N-Key and Steffen had to run the bar, organize food, etc. We went for all prizes, same as a regular attendee (we didn't have most sporting though), but only Steffen won something (2nd best painted). N-Key and Steffen were not very competitive playing Gobbos and Chaos. I changed my playing style to more fun oriented (no stalling, taking more risk and a "shoot at the ball" defence, etc.) to avoid the odds of winning or getting into the final. But only the first game would have had a different result with a different playing style for sure (he tied as i didn't stall before going up 2-1).

I'd never get myself to organize a tournament and not attend as i enjoy the playing way too much. So if you have people to key in the results and don't have to care that much for food i don't see a reason why you should not play. If you have to tweak the swiss ranking to avoid people playing each other more than once (WILL happen!), just make sure that you don't a benefit like playing gobbos or flings from that. We got into that situation once: after tweaking the last round, N-Key would have played against halflings while the other Gobbo coach heading for "Best Stunty Award" got a normal team. so we tweaked differently Smile

I don't see any problem with you competing for a prize you can't influence. We had a public vote for Best Painted, so no problem with Steffen attending. And if you manage to win 6 games with Humans in a no star environment (you won't, i bet!), you deserve to take the trophy!
Darkson - Sep 16, 2003 - 10:16 AM
Post subject:
I've no problem wih you playing, as you won't beat me anyway Laughing

Seriously, I don't see why you shouldn't enter most, if not all the awards, where would be the attraction of hosting your own tournament this year if you won by "fixing" the results? If you did that I'd guess no-one would attend one again. Go for it!
kalten - Sep 16, 2003 - 10:21 AM
Post subject:
Bring it on Indy - you know you wont win anyway...hee hee hee.

Seriously though, there is no reason why you can't enter all the comps as people can be very serious about those sportsmanship points, just go for it - I think you'll find you end up with faily even points in that respect as people wont want to upset you one way or the other, but having said that - if you are a good sportsman then you deserve the points - you'll get a fair hearing from me if we play.

Indi, thanks for a great tournament. I had a blast, and I'm definetly coming next year. Had a fantastic time, had some great games, finally got to put a few more faces to names, drank more than was probably good for me and did exceptionally badly, as shown above Embarassed

But it was fun Very Happy

Cheers to all the coaches for making it a great tournament as well, especially the french lads, DW and Le Venomous Breath.

Well for those who are interested, those scores break down like this:

Dwarf:5
Human:4
Undead:4
Wood Elf:3
High Elf:3
Amazons:3
Orcs:3
Dark Elf:2
Lizardmen:2
Skaven:2

.... so no Gobbos or Halflinngs then? Shocked

Seriously, I had a fantastic time, really fun even though I managed to loose 4 games and did not win a game until game 5 on sunday.

So to my opponents:

deathwing: I can't wait for the next time, 0-0 really did not do our game justice! REMATCH!!

loiseX: PAC!!! Great game mate, I will get you next time....

Raven: Harsh game mate ,the dice were very friendly to me.... Rolling Eyes

shane: Bloody sure hands, yeah right, sausage fingers more like! Good rematch mate, I look forward to our next match.

And one other dude who (to my embarisment Embarassed ) I cant remember his name or sign on. Well done. He was a dwarf coach, and he beat me Rolling Eyes

Great time had, bring on Camcarnage 2004!

Indigo - great tournament. Very well organised and ran very smoothly.

Personnally I had no luck and didn't play very well either, Sad but it was still a good laugh. Thanks to all my opponents for good games and everyone else for making it such fun.

Just having a quick look through the score sheet one thing that strikes me is that sportsmanship averaged nearly 25 (or over 4 per game). Given that 3 is an "average game" shouldn't it have been nearer 18?

Lynch Chris?

Why?

Because he caused 6 casualties against me WITHOUT using piling on? Because he interpected a pass with a mummy? Because he treated my armour as if it were paper?

Wink

I had one elf left at the end of the game...

Won 3 lost 3...

Lost 2 to 1) My Dad Sad 2) Joe Byers - who I invited to the tournament Sad He hadn't played Blood Bowl for a year - ahd never SEEN Norse amazons or lizardmen... And came 4th

Not surprisingly he is our league's most successful player ever. *sigh*

Next time I think I might ditch the high elves. I don't think they can win against this good opposition Wink

Thanks to Indi and Mrs Indi for a well run tournament.

Three wins, one draw (first ever nil-nil) and two defeats (to the guys that finished second and third) with my much played Skaven, the Darkthunder Cheatahs.

Drew Venomous Breath in the first round. Rolling Eyes 1-1 at the half. Squished enough skinks and fortunately got rid of the Krox to grudge out a 2-1.

Kalten's dwarves next up. 1-1 at the half. Stopped his second half cage but eventually lost the battle for the ball and Kalten scored the winner.

Lackey's Wood Elves. Managed to reduce his team to a shadow of its former self (at least eight ko'd elves and two early casualties) for a 3-1.

Noodle's Dad's Orcs. Luckily stopped his first half cage but was blitzed on the second half kick off and he rightly started another bloody cage. Mad Stopped him again and could have won but my blodging Gutter Runner was stopped from scoring by a last ditch block (without tackle) and an incredibly agile black orc. 0-0.

Louis X's Orcs. Squeeked out a turnover to lead at the half. Scored twice fortuitously at the beginning of the second half and ran out 3-1 winner.

Last game against Deathwing's 'Zons for a place on the podium. Never really in this one. Woody targeted my strip baller and tackler and I couldn't stop his well paced scoring drive. Second half, I doubleskulled after burning a reroll on a both down to leave the ball in open play. Got it back at the cost of remaining rerolls but couldn't equalise and got scored on again. Not great luck but then again, not the best tactics either against very well drilled 'Zons. A 2-0 defeat and a few dropped NAF points.

13th Overall with a miserly nine TD's from 6 games.

Great tournament, a few more faces to names and more glory for the ECBBL. Very Happy

And Deathwing... I'll try and talk more next time we meet.

Great tourney. I had a brilliant time, even if my journey home was a bit of a disaster.

I missed my train from Cambridge Sad , and the next one by 5 seconds Mad . Arrived at Euston to find the station full of people, as Virgin's services had collapsed due to "severe disruption", whatever that means Confused . I got my ticket validated for a new train, which left 40 minutes later, 1 hour late. Had to change at Nuneaton, as the direct trains to Birmingham had been cancelled. They then provided a 1 carriage train for 2 carriages worth of people, which left Nuneaton 20 minutes after we arrived, and at about the same time as my last local train left New Street Rolling Eyes .

Can't wait for the next one.

Camcarnage obviously, not massively f*cked up virgin rail journey.

In response to all the (many) people who beat me:

Dave the barbarian sat contemplating his return to norsca in shame. The dice gods had abandoned him and all seemed lost. He needed to kill something.... His gaze suddenly fell upon his "tactical advisor" cowering in a corner. maybe a snotling had been a poor choice. smiling wickedly,he reached for his sword......

In all seriousness, even though I came last, the whole weekend was amazing fun. getting no less than three elf teams may have been unfortunate but since i couldn't even beat THEM up, it was obviously not meant to be.

A special shout out to my opponents: Maitre-Tactac, Noodle, Hangus, Venomous, Dwarfcoach and Dan. thanks for making my first tourney memorable guys! I'll get you next time!

Went for something a little different at Cam Carnage. High Elves fielding 1 Dragon, 4 Lions, 1 Phoneix, 5 Line elves, 2 TRR & 1FF. On paper I thought it may be able to do some damage.

Game 1 - Mordredd's Apocalypse - Mordredd (Undead)
A forward 3-4-4 defence doesn't look tempting to HE. I eventually managed to get a ball carrying lion through the lines, but he was unprotected & got sacked. 1-0 at half time and ~5 elves off the pitch.

2nd half I couldn't get anywhere near his cage, and went 2-0 after ~4 turns. Then, still down lots of players I got blitzed for 3-0 and couldn't stop another one after some more bad luck. Mordredd played very well, and once he was men up didn't give me a sniff of an opening.

Game 2 - Unmentionables - Robert Piper (Dwarves)
Bottom Table Rolling Eyes and up against Dwarves. A lucky riot in the 1st half meant only 5 turns for the Dwarf offence. I managed to stop it, without any casualties - and even managed to get both troll slayers off the sidelines and had the numerical advantage for most of the game. A straight forward score and then I held the Dwarves back for 1-0.

Game 3 - Red Beards - Carmichael (Dwarves)
More Dwarves. The poor old Red Beards. I'm pretty sure this was the only game I played where my oppponent had worse luck than I did. 4 double skulls in the course of his 1st half drive used up all his TRR (plus the bonus one from Cheering Fans) and then cost him the TD as a last turn blitz to clear the route for his runner bounced off a line elf.
Second half I managed to score quickly and then turned him over (I only managed to turn my opponent over twice in the tournament). A consolation TD at the end gave the Dwarves something to cheer about. 2-1.

Game 4 - Tempus Few Gits - Al the Trowel (Humans)
Well Al got his revenge for defeat at the Bearded Snot. A blitz and perfect D allowed him to turn me over twice in the first half and take a 2-0 with him receiving.
Then his pressurized offence failed a crucial catch allowing me to pull off my play of the tournament - An unskilled Lion Warrior dodges from a TZ, picks up the ball in a TZ, dodges out, makes the long pass to a line elf (with a TRR) who catches it and with a GFI scores. Sometimes I really love playing Elves. However I wasn't to get the luck in the next drive and a succession of bad blocks meant Al took a deceisive 3-1 win.

Game 5 - Flithy Hoes - Haggislad (Amazons)
Somehow this game finished 3-2. I have no idea how - or much recollection as we decided to play Sambucca Rules (each casualty we both downed a shot). The lowlight was getting a pitch invasion at the end of the 1st half and then Nuffle only giving me 3 stuns. The highlight making an improbable play to bring it back to 2-2.

Game 6 - Dead & Beautiful - JJB (Undead)
Well I managed to completely frustrate Justin's 1st half drive - KOing a mummy was nice, but just couldn't turn him over for the score. 2nd half I scored in 3 turns (nice Lion play again) but burnt all my TRR. After that Justin just kept man marking and was just making too many die rolls to stop him. Eventually he squeezed in the equaliser.

I played badly, and rotten luck and took a weak team. Ah well, live and learn. Maybe next year I'll be better and Nuffle will smile on my endevours.

It was a good tournament for the ECBBL with ChrisB winning, Al picking up most TDs and Chris most casualties. Ben, an ECBBL newbie picked up the worst (but most sporting) NAF coach too.

Nice write up DS! I thought I'd give you a run down of my show as well, if that's cool? ...

First game and I'm really nervous, I don't know this guy and he has dwarves! Damn! Anyway, things couldn't have started better for me as the first thing I do in the game is roll a Blitz! 2nd dice roll is a Double Knockdown, 3rd is a double 6 for the armour, 4th is another double 6 for injury and finaly 5th is a 6 for the final injury making that the 1st Death of the touny and a real ice break as me and my new pal Rob laugh and joke about his cursed luck and my obviously inspired luck! I'm afraid that Rob never got off the ground from there and I pulled off a good 2-0 win. Cheers Rob, great game, but your right - your luck sucks! Sad

2nd game and I draw Geggster! At the time I had forgotten that that name should mean something, so I went into the game without any preconceptions about my opponant. By the end of the second turn when he went 1-0 up I was worrying! Anyway, still oblivious to who Geggster was I pulled off an amazing (for dwarves) TD at the end of the 1st half making it 1-1. It was at this point that I found out that Geggster was ranked 3rd in the world! "Shiiiiii***t" was my response! Now feeling chuffed with the 1-1 so far I went into the second half recieving and decided to lock down and trundle the keg (no cages here, they leak too much beer) towards the endzone. It was not easy and Geggster made it very hard, but in the end he couldn't stop the dwarves push and the game ended a VERY good 2-1 for me and a new feeling of hope and possiblity dawned on me..."I can do this!" Cheers Geggster, your a great bloke and I'd love to play you more - I need some more coaching with the teams I don't know so well, like skaven, and, well, your the best at them there is! See ya soon mate.

3rd Game, and I'm on a high now. The elation of winning to Geggster was riding high in my mind and was now playing in the heady heights of the top 3 tables! Never before then had I thought I would get anywhere near here and so sweating and not a little nervous I found Dave and his High Elves. Just aquick note here, I HATE playing agaisnt elves of any kind. Dave is a diamond geezer and I loved almost every min of our game. His luck was abismal and it was rounded off by the most unheard thing ever...a Troll Slayer intercepting the ball! Dave and I had a discusion about the rules at this point and though the ruling went my way Dave took only a few mins to recover and we were back to our friendly banter once more. The game was very one sided and my dwarves ran home 2-0 winners. Dave, I'm sorry it went the way it did, but I look forward to the rematch and we'll see if you can get your own back. Cheers mate.

So End of day 1 and I 'm at the top of the standings! "Holy Shi*" I say when I find out. Anyway the guys made up for it by lynching me on every given occasion and the werewolves killing me at every chance they got too! Cheers guys, but hey - it was cool!

Day 2 and I've drawn Kerruch and his wood elves (more bloody elves). It was a great game, my fav of the tourny (even though I lost!). Xavier is great bloke, very freindly and open. He even let me take a move back that lead to me scoring a TD so needless to say he got full marks for Sportsmanship. It could have been a different result after being 1-1 at half time with my dwarves dodging from elves to score the equaliser after he had gone 1-0 up in turn 2 (noticing a pattern here?) Anyway I recieved in the 2nd half and pushed my keg down the field. It was all going according to plan whenthe nightmare role came up..Double Skulls! My ball carrier had to make this blitz and run into the endzone to secure a 2-1 win for my dwarves...Damn! anyway, in pops a bloody elf, picks the ball up and throws it to the waiting wide reciver who after a brief clash with a few of my dwarves manages to run the ball home and seal thye game on turn 8! Damn, but what a game, cheers Xavier - it was later I found out he had won the Chaos Cup (I almost had him....Damn those double skulls) Smile See you soon Xavier, mate.

Game 5 and I'm up against Humans in the form of Jo's Estalian Eagles. Damn fine game, hard fought and bloody close, but in the end I managed to eek out a 2-1 win though it did go to the line with us running out of time towards the end of the game and we did miss a total of 4 turns (2 each) at the end, could it have been different if left till the end? Maybe - Jo's a great player, look forward to see you again sometime.

OK, so I'm back on the top table at the end of the tourny, in fact I'm playing to win the championship. If I win the trophies mine, anything else and Chris walks away with it... Attack! Smile

Once again I'm 1-0 down by half way through the 1st half an fighting to get the draw, let alone win it. But as with the rest of the first half of this tourny I run the ball home right at the end and with a dwarf longbeard no less! Yep, and he dosged out from an orc and made 2 go for it's! Chris was right when he said "How the bloody hell did you manage to pull that much BullS**t out?" I didn't have an answer...
2nd half and I'm recieving again (yet another pattern?) the cage doesn't really ever get formed and the best I can manage is a sort of L shape, but it's working....I'm almost threre, in fact I end my blitzer's go (who has the ball) 5 squares from the endzone, but he's all alone... and an orc is near...lets go for it...I rolled a 1, no worries - I have a reroll...I roll a...1 Sad "bloody hell" I shout! Chris is pleased, the blocking game was not going the way 4 Black Orcs should and I was nearly 2-1 up....But I could do nothing, several failed attempts to get the ball and it was all over. 1-1, though I did get the satisfaction of getting a player sent off for a foul...bloody goblins! Well done Chris you made it very hard for me and my bad luck proved to be the decider in a game that deserved to be a draw, cheers mate.

2nd overall in the touney and I've had a great time....Until next time, my new friends...until next time...

OK..here we go.....
Usual disclaimer: The following is purely my own hazy recollections, apologies in advance to anybody I've done a diservice to and for any 'facts' I've got wrong...

Sat.

Game 1.
I'm second out of the draw and a hearty laugh goes out as my Zons get Dwarves in the shape of dwarfcoach...turns out to be a cracking game as my biatches break a few fingernails as they spend most of the game hanging on by them. A failed pick-up on the sideline by a not so Sure Handed Runner is a huge moment towards the end of the first half. A great 0-0 which rivalled the game I played against Norse at Tulips '02 in terms of enjoyment. Tackle. Ugh! Very Happy

Game 2. (Sure Hands on a Thrower).
I get Xavi and his Welfs. Cool...I know Xavi from Rendez-vous and look forward to meeting the Chaos Cup Champ on the field.
I kick and go down a score on turn 2, then Xavi turns me over to take a 2-0 lead...attrition and Xavi's lack of TRR allow me to bring it back to 2-1 by half time.
2nd half and I recieve and drive downfield taking out a few elves..I could have possibly stalled and gone for the 2-2, but I figure I stand a chance of turning it over and winning 3-2. I get some pressure on but Xavi (out of RR) completes a pass downfield to get a 'dancer within range. It comes down to a 2D Block with a TRR and all 4 dice end up with a push at best. (I then throw a non-consequential block upfield which results in double Splat!, 12 for armour, 10 for injury...you gotta laugh. Mr. Green )
The WD makes the necessary dodge and a great game with a huge momentum swing and a nailbiting end finishes 3-2 to Xavi. Absolutely cracking game! Great guy, great opponent...look forward to next time.

Game 3. (Tackle on a Blitzer).
Welfs again in the shape of Dan Seymour (who'll soon be joining us here).
A little hazy by this point... Razz
This time I don't get turned over...and run the clock a little towards the end before taking it in for the 2-1 win. Yeah, a little seedy I guess but fair enough in the circumstances. Giving Welfs two or three turns to score when you can leave them one is a little dumb. Getting burned by Xavi in the last game didn't help... Smile

Interlude down the pub Sat night saw some two board, 3 ball, 6 team multiplayer madness (which was a load of fun) and many games of Werewolf out in the beer garden. And alcohol. Lots of it. Cool

Sunday morning I put on a nice bright shirt in order to dazzle and befuddle my hungover opponents....

Game 4 v. Indigo's Humans. (Guard on a Blitzer.)
Indigo was looking forward to this one...so was I. I recieve the ball, go after his Tackle Blitzer and manage to KO him while running the loose rolling cage for the score. The following drive I manage to sack the ball carrier after Indy leaves his Thrower with range of a couple of my players after a dodge or 2 and some gfis. 2-0 H-T and looking good.
On the following drive I manage to pop the ball loose and just generally disrupt Indy's drive, but his Thrower comes through in the clinch and a well executed move sees the score go to 2-1 with (I think) 3 turns left. Not a problem..then up comes the 10 on the KO table, the ball goes shortish and the cat's well and truly among the pigeons as there's humans in my backfield and around the ball. A few shenagains later and I get the ball away and within range. From memory I think Indy made something like a dodge, a gfi and got the single dice clear Splat he needed to leave it 2-1 and secure the extra point for losing by 1 as opposed to 2. Again, throughly enjoyable game. Sorry about the shirt.

Game 5. v. noodle's dad and his Orcs. (Guard on a second Blitzer)
Strange game this. I kinda got out of jail I think. Coming back from the lunchtime pint I wasn't quite with it and far from on top of my game. I recieve, send my Tackle Blitzer after a Gobbo and kill him on turn one. Turn 2 I get lucky and BH a Black Orc. Despite that I'm struggling to make any kind of headway. I lose the ball and really am struggling when Mr. Railton rolls double skulls or both down with a no-block BOB with his single TRR used early in the turn. (Somewhere around this point it dawns on me that I'd set up on offence with 10 players...muppet! Embarassed ) It allows me to get the ball and score.
Second half is a question of delaying the orc cage that's moving inexorably down my left flank with his pair of Guard Blitzers flanking the ball carrier. Meanwhile a gobbo runs down my right flank with my Tackle Blitzer chasing him around to no avail. The orcs failure to really hurt my girls until late in the drive allows me enough players to delay the cage's advance while plugging any potential gaps. With something like 3 turns to go I judge the moment's right to pitch everybody in, take a couple of cas. for my trouble but manage to stop the cage, then with the gobbo the only real threat he finally fails a dodge and KO's himself. It's late enough that I can knock down or Push Back the only players within scoring range and we end the game there and then with no possible further score for either side.
Good game, wasn't really with it in the early stages, but felt I got a grip after I scored..to some extent anyway. We didn't mess around either, it was a real 'bang, bang, bang..your turn' fast paced game.

Game 6. v Geggster's Skaven. (Block on a Catcher)
Well, Paul's already covered this one, but I felt he was a little kind in both his comments above and our post-game chat. Nothing much went wrong first half, it's nice when you're able to achieve pretty much what your aiming to do. Early use of the apoth followed by a Badly Hurt strip ball GR was a nice bonus for me, even so Paul conducted a pretty tenacious defence and I still needed to roll dice to take the score at the end of the half. I got the block rolls I needed when I needed them, and seemingly unable to fail dodges enabled me to get the players where they needed to be. Second half pretty accurately covered by Paul above. Good game, quality opponent, love to meet again.
(and don't worry about talking more mate, each to their own, maybe I should talk a little less, eh? A day's drinking doesn't help... Smile )
(And special mention to Tim who turned up midway through the game, it took me a while to register just who had made that comment over my shoulder... Razz , good to see you again..)

So overall: Third on TD (and Cas) diff, (Kalten, myself and Al in 4th all finished with 25 points). Had the rub of the green over the 2 days (but then I've had some stinkers! Razz ), I think the standard is high enough nowdays that you need luck on your side to finish highly nowdays.
Zons are bloody good at 1 mill..(the W4 D1 L1 here followed the W3 D1 L1 at Tulips) and I think the 4th TRR over the 4th Blitzer is vindicated.

Thanks again to all my opponents in particular and everybody else there for the laughs and the craic.

Oh and footnote, thanks for the Painting votes, it was real nice to bring something home, I'm more than a little chuffed! Smile

OK here's my write up... Very Happy

Game 1> vs. Joe Byers (human) Loss 4-2

Why oh why did I invite Joe to a tournament? Granted he hadn't played in a year but even so - his record in our league (ABBL) was: W 65 D 13 L 10 (or 0.813) and I had never beaten him. Shock then when he was 2-0 up at half time (not!). After the break he had a bad spell. My high elves scored - blitzed then scored again 2-2! I dared to hope! Then Joe got good again and scored - turned me over and got a 4-2 on the last turn Crying or Very sad 1 point.

Game 2> vs. Raven3001 (norse) Win 5-1

I liked this game Very Happy Raven is an excellent bloke and took my "backlash" luck game on the chin. The game included 2 blitzes in my favour and a host of daft TD attempts - which all worked. The norse did get a consolation TD though. 5-1 to me at the end...

Game 3> vs. My dad! (orcs) Loss 3-0

Why oh why... Wink Now I usually beat my dad Wink but not his orcs. ANd this is why. From the first turn I began losing players - and in turn 8 (surprise) the orcs scored. 1-0 After the break I knew I needed to score quickly so I tried a pass action - its only a pass over a black orc.... Interception - cue grind down the pitch and 2-0. With 2 turns left I put all my effort (and 5 men!) into scoring for th 2-1. Cue blitz and goblins running through my lines... I immediately failed the dodge to blitz and my Dad scores his 3rd in the last turn. D'oh!

Game 4> vs. Chris (undead) Loss 3-0

And then it got worse Smile Despite having a pitch invasion on my side the undead managed to pick up the ball - in the rain and then systematically destroyed my team... 2 piling on mummies - well actually they were not needed - my elves had donned their best paper armour. ONCE did piling on cause a casualty, of the SIX I took during the game... Still the game was a laugh... Once again it was 1-0 at half time so I needed the quick score. All I needed was a pass over a mummy.... Interception... Surprised By the end of the game I had 1 player on the pitch. 3-0 seemed reasonable...

Game 5> vs. Hangus (Norse) Win 2-1

At last I was on the bottom table - but one - feeling a bit like Leeds Wink and I played a nice chap called Ben... The game was fast paced and the norse struggled to maintain possession all through the first half. None the less they managed it - and scored in turn 8. After a brief half time panic the elves managed to get back on terms relatively easily, but then came the block-skull results you DON'T want to see against norse! However luck was on my side at the next kickoff. At 1-1 my elf kicked the ball into the end zone. Now the norse had nowhere to cage - and the swift lion warriors stole in for the TD after some tight blocking. 2-1 was the final score and my closest game... Once again very enjoyable and friendly.

Game 6> vs. Darkson (skaven) Win 4-2

Now this game was brilliant Wink Not only did I win, but it was fast, action packed and - well silly really Wink Both sides tried daft plays - gutter runners blitzing my cage, elves dodging through lines of skaven. Sometimes it even worked. The casualites were a bit steep though and the game was 8 a side before the end! I eventually got the upper hand in the second half after Darkson's luck ran out... Right at the death so did mine - as I fell over in the endzone with the ball!

Good games - good tournament and exceptional organisation from Indigo and crew.

Oh yeah - I fouled three times in the tournament and got sent off EVERY time. What's up with that??

Note to self. 1 re-roll not enough. High Elves bad Very Happy

Here's a rundown of my games, as best as I can remember them. Apologies for any inaccuracies.

Game 1> Win 4-0 Cas 3-0 against Doubleskulls High Elves.

Doubleskulls has already given a pretty accurate commentary of this game earlier, though he didn't mention the pouring rain or the fact that my 3 casualties came early on in the first half. Not an easy position to be in for any Elf team.

Game 2> Lose 2-1 Cas 3-1 against maitre-tactac's Dark Elves

I kicked off in the first half in more pouring rain. (I kicked off every game, using 3-4-4 standard fast team defence every time). Quickly went 1-0 down and then settled in for the long drive up field. I hate Elves with their block/dodge and refusal to fail dodge rolls. Right at the end of the half that damned Witch Elf dodges into several tackle zones and sacks my block/dodge Ghoul on a one dice block. The ball, of course, bounced to her and then she caught it too. Mad The elves didn't pull off any similar antics on my second half drive so I eventually levelled the game at 1-1 with 2-3 turns left. I then faced the choice of defending a draw or putting pressure on his thrower and hope for a win. I went for the win. Big mistake. In this game he won 2 extra re rolls a half, and needed them.

Game 3> Lose 1-0 Cas 4-3 against Kadu-C's Amazons

I put on a fierce defence and, despite it seeming like every block he rolls results in me down, I finally sack his ball carrier to prevent a first half score. (He did fail to pick up the ball for the first 2 turns, with sure hands.) What should have been a simple drive to the end zone, ends up as a 6 turn scrabble for the ball after somehow he gets players into my cage and sacks my block/dodge Ghoul. My last 6 turns consist largely of free actions-action-action-fail-your turn. E.g 2 dice blocks with Mummies ended in me on the floor and him standing. I also went from a player up, to a player down, in a single turn mid half. He eventually steals the ball for a turn 8 winner.

Game 4> Win 2-1 Cas 4-0 against Haggislad's Amazons

A very tight game. It was 1-1 at the half, but despite staunch defence the high rate of attrition and a little luck brought in an 8th turn winner.

Game 5> Draw 2-2 Cas 0-0 against Ace2k00's High Elves

This game cost me the most casualties prize. He decided to always dodge away, even into multiple tackle zones, to avoid being blocked. As a result his 2 serious injuries came from dodges, and not blocks, so didn't count.
My first roll of the game was Skull Skull re roll Skull Skull . This let him through for an early score, but I equalised by the half. In the second half he then managed to turn me over by dodging into 3 tackle zones for a 1 dice blitz with strip ball. I recovered the ball with my block/dodge Ghoul but he was left exposed and got sacked again. A second attempt to recover the ball ended in Skull re roll Skull . A pass later and I was 2-1 down. However I was able to force my way past him for an 8th turn equaliser.

Game 6>Win 2-1 Cas 4-2 against Indigo's Humans

The first quarter was a nightmare. I managed to sack his side step catcher with a Ghoul, but he dodged into a tackle zone to pick up the ball and score. Indigo then won the pitch invasion with a double 6 seriously injuring a Ghoul, added to the Wight in turn 1 and the Zombie in turn 2 i was now down 3 players for the rest of the game, with no return injuries for the Humans. He then sacked my block/dodge Ghoul, KOing him, and stole the ball. At this point I thought I was going down by 4-6 TDs, and 3-6 Cas. There was an L shaped wall between me, and the ball near the side line, but Indie fluffed the pick up. I then got the luckiest equaliser. I recovered the ball with a Ghoul, who was then sacked and stunned. I recovered with a Wight, who handed off to another Wight who made a lone dash for the line. He survived being 2 dice blitzed by the thrower, and was then forced into a half dice return blitz in order to dodge out for the score.
The second half saw us reduced to 8 men a piece after a quick and exciting dash for my second lucky score. 3 turns of difficult defence then caused Indie to turn over in turn 6, and an interception by the remaining Zombie ended a long shot passing attempt at an equaliser. All in all this was one tough game.

Thanks to all my opponents. Win or lose you all played hard and fair, and I look forward to meeting you all 'on the field' at some point in future tourneys.

One of the great and yet suprising things was the calibre of players who attended. I played Raven who came last, but he was a great player who was besieged by quite alot of bad luck (which is never good in a Norse vrs Dwarf game).

At the WPS Challenge Cup (the only other tourny I have ever been to) the players were of a vastly different level, and I do not mean just gaming ability, I mean of everything: good humour, sportsmanship, painting quality, dedication and even quantity of alcohol!!!!!!!! Wink Twisted Evil

I think that it seemed to be one of the first times the NAF really flexed it's muscles and I gotta admit I was really impressed!!!!

EDIT: Doh, I'm not dissing the WPS by any means, I just read this post and it comes over a bit superior and all. I'm a complete newbie at this tourny scene and any opinion I have about my experience have to be taken with that in mind..... Embarassed

I had a great time at the WPS as well, I really did...

Big thanks to Indigo for organising this great tournament, to all who helped, and everyone who participated: that was fun!

- Indigo, looks like you'll have more painting to do for next year's trophies...

The breakdown of my games? The only possible description is this:
Game 1 vs Bryan Railton's Orcs: 1-0. I (luckily) smashed orcs, so easily that I could have scored at least one more TD had I actually played well.

All my other games: I could hardly cause casualties or take out players with my piling on mummies, which meant that it was nearly impossible to control the game against all my other opponents who were overall of the 'agile' type. Obviously, my not playing well did not help...

Cheers for a great tourney to all attended.

Used Norse, 9 linemen, 1 thrower, 2 catchers, 1 mino, 2 TRR, 6FF + an apoth.

Every oppo (other than Justin, who knows my team well) said no blitzers????

Game One vs Garil using Dwarves

Just what I wanted with a rookie mino....

I received and promptly beat up the dwarves, causing 2 casualties (failed apo roll) and knocking two out! Scored at the end for a 1-0 lead, and looking good.....

I kick off at the start, and promptly two of my linemen go off the pitch, and it suddenly doesn't look so good. Manage to get to the ball, but can't hang on to it (fail my second pass of the game), and so Garil shows what good passers Runners are, and promptly scores to tie it up. 1-1 draw.

Game Two vs Mark using Dwarves

Oh goodie. Dwarves again. But G'rrk (the Minotaur) has block at least now, so that'll be fine.

I receive, and beat the dwarves up again. However, G'rrk decides he doesn't like 2-die blocks and goes down (double skulls), and the dwarves then get and protect the ball, so we go in tied at half time.

2nd half and I manage to sieze the ball, and drive down the pitch. All it needs is my passer to complete a pass..... He fails, and Mark grabs the ball and sets up a cage. I resign myself to him scoring and decide to pick on the dwarves on the other side of the pitch. Luckily for me, Mark sends most of his players back into the melee, to which I promptly run around them forcing him to score. Bjarnie (the thrower) finally makes a completion and I score in two turns to equalise. I didn't deserve to!

3rd game vs Simons lizards

first time I'd played lizards, so I wasn't sure how I would do. However bribing their coach with alcohol seemed to work Smile
Got lucky and took a Saurus off first block, and then set out on Skink killing. I then had a sufficient player advantage that always kept Simon on the backfoot, and he never got that bit of luck to get him back in the game. Much taunting between the Krox and G'rrk as well! (sadly the Krox won their own battle in the end). 2-1 to me overall on TD's though.

4th game vs Justins undead

Having got stuffed using woodies vs Justin at the last tournament a chance for revenge.

I received, and felt confident from there. Battered Justin around, killing a mummy and getting numerous knock-outs, I ended half time one-nil up, despite G'rrk double skulling again.

And at last the FF come into play! 5 player pitch invasion, hits the mummy, two ghouls, and two wights. Justin can't compete, and I jsut batter him some more leaving scoring until turn eight. Not a very enjoyable game for Justin.....

Game five vs Dan and lizards

Having played Simon I tried the same sort of tactics. Eric the lineman was a star, killing two Skinks on turns two and three of the first half. However G'rrk let me down again with a skull on a one die block, and skulls twice on half die blocks (the only three not-two die blocks in the game for him!). However because of casualties I was again able to control the game, but I let Dan mug the mino with Saurus and this gave him a free move with a skink (the only one left!) who charged down the pitch for the equaliser! Very tight game overall, probably the closest I had of the tournament.

Game six vs Joe and Humans

At last, a softish team (no big guy!). Turn one And I had two linemen off (dirty player sent off, one with block injured). But from there, despite getting through his armour continually, I couldn't get him off the pitch. He forced a turnover early in the first half (G'rrk double skulling). Second half and it looked ok, forced him in the corner and he needed a miracle to score..... He did! Too much from there for me to come back from, and although we both scored another two TD's each (high scoring second half!) it ended 4-2 to Joe. He played very well, taking good advantage of the slow speed of the Norse. Winning all four brilliant coaching rolls seemed appropriate as his tactics were better....

So 2 wins, 3 draws, and 1 loss. Not bad, especially as the mino really underperformed dice wise, and I never got to play the nice squishy elf teams. Cheers to all my opponents for good games, and the standard of play was very high, certainly the highest of any of the tournaments I've been to.

Most dissapointing was only ten casualties in six games. Bleedin' dwarves.....

Indi, I think that you can blame bad luck for loosing that last game. My first TD was a bit against the flow of play. Having said that you were forced into throwing away your chance to equalise by going for an unlikely passing action, and you did not always go for the easiest series of blocks (at least from my perspective).

So, you definitely don't suck but, as Kadu-C says, practice...

Chaos? I thought you wanted to win?

Nah, although my luck was in with that pitch invasion I got cocky and threw it away rather than cementing my lead Sad

2nd= of 12 in average TD's conceded.

However,

I'm ranked 32nd overall (must try harder next year...)
and Wood Elves have the lowest average casualties of the races, yet I'm
ranked 3rd hardest hitter (15 cas?) Shocked

In addition I'm ranked as the 5th highest scorer (12 TD?), although I only
recall managing to score a total of 7 TDs...

Have you got my stats mixed up with someone else's?
