Post subject: Old player getting back to it (Need Help)  PostPosted: Jan 22, 2005 - 04:01 PM

I used to play this game ten years ago. My friend and I decided to get back to it and convinced some friends to get in also. Even if I had lots of stuff from that time, I decided to let my old foam board in the closet and bought the new box set to start with the lattest rules and equipments. To my surprise alot of stuff kept unchange, (since it worked perfectly fine before why change it right?) but the rules changed alot.

Not only it changed alot, but it changed alot over the internet even after the release of the box I bought.

I started by reading what I had, played with it. Read what was the official new rules on bloodbowl.com. And I read rules in the experimental section for extented League play on bloodbowl.com also.

Shocked

With all those changes I start to feel overloaded with different ways of playing this game.

I have some questions and three things that I don't understand:

Questions:

1. What are you using in tournements?
2. What are you using when playing with friends?
3. When all those experimental and official new rules will be include in the actual living rulebook?

Odd things in any form of actual rules:

1. Minotaur can't play with any player who have Right Stuff, so the Throw a Team-mate and Always Hungry are pointless for him.

2. Chaos Human mutants in booster packs from citadel, but no ''chaos human mutants'' in the Chaos Team-list (are they Chaos warriors mutated without hat?... Warriors Without Hat... mmmm... We can't dance, we can't dance, because we have too much armour to lose control... eee... sorry)

2. In the experimental rules for League play they bring the (...great new...) rule on how the value of a player increase when he acquire a skill, a trait or a stat upgrade. But they don't mention if you keep counting SPP for the Team Rating since the TR is already influenced by the value of the players (it would be logic to stop counting SPP right?).

3. We have one way to roll for injury in 3.0, one in 4.0(bloodbowl-fr.com) and one in V1.3 in the experimental rules section (which is, if I'm not mistaken, a go back to 3.0 way of rolling it).

In the end, I must say it's a way better game then when I first started to play it ten years ago. The models are way better too. I bought the Chaos team, Undead team, Wood-elfs team, one Ogre and a Minotaur. My painting skills are a little rusted but I start to get back on track.

It's just that I need a little guidance over what is to use and what is to left behind for now in the rules (book & net versions).

The Minotaur thing is really bugging me tought.

When I used to play my Chaos team before, I was using almost all races for building my team. The main Idea of Chaos is to use rejects from all the different races, not only Warriors and Beastman (???). At least it how I remember it.

Thanks in advance for enlighting me. Wink

I'm with you, brother. I recently got back into it after almost the same layoff... I went to a great tourney (Death Bowl II) and had lots of great coaches who helped me through the new rules.

Now, I am registered in two tournaments in the next two months, and I will be running my own (in Ottawa, Canada).

Point: it's not too hard to get back into it! In fact, the newest rule-set (other than the 'special' rules like Big Guys, etc.) makes the game easier and faster, with less 'looking at charts'.

However, I am not sure what you mean by 'using' in your first two questions...

I mean what set of rules are you using. The living rule book 3.0 with or without the upgrade from the Official new rules on the web site of Bloodbowl.com. And are you using the experimental rules at home or stay with the official set of rules?

And by the way, Montreal is only 2 hours from Ottawa. Is there going to be a tournament organized soon, if so. WHEN? WHO? WHERE? HOW? HOW MUCH?

Most tournaments seem to use LRB 3.0 but may also include the most recent 'official' rules from the BBRC (Blood Bowl Rules Committee) in the form of the Rules Review 2004. Often there will be some restrictions (Star Players, Secret Weapons, Wizards, Big Guys, etc.), new tables (modified Kick Off table), skill progression format (one skill per round, NOT using the skill progression in the rules), and special rules for 'special pitches'.

Tournaments can also follow varying formats such as who you play, skill progression, and starting roster.

Personally, I like a more 'vanilla' set of rules: no star players, wizards, big guys, secret weapons, etc. Nor do I feel comfortable with the new official teams (Vampire, Ogre). I will be running my 'tournament' (in May in Ottawa) at a gaming convention (CanGames, www.cangames.ca) so I expect that I will have several newbies and I want my rules to be as simple as possible.

So you are from Montreal, eh? Actually I am from Chesterville, which is about half-way between Ottawa and greater Montreal. The Death Bowl II was a great tournament and was in Montreal. Both the Canadian Open (Feb.) and the Challenge of Q'ermmit (March) are in TO, but I am looking for car poolers from Ottawa or Montreal. There are also many more in a 10 hour (driving) radius.

For something more local, check out your local GW store (or gaming store). Usually there are some 'specialist games' days where games like Blood Bowl are played. I am setting something up to play in Ottawa with two guys I met at Death Bowl II. I was even thinking about having a mini-tourney at my house for 6-8 coaches. Small sets of games like this is really the way to go.

I would suggest that you check out the North America subgroup of the Tournaments forum, or the Tourneys section. Lots of stuff there. I would ALWAYS be happy to take a day or so to visit Montreal to play (and I am a relative newbie myself!)

You might want to PM (personal message) me if you want more info, or to set up some games! (Using the forum for back and forth discussion if frowned upon here! Forums are more for group discussion!)

Garth

The minotaur can play on a chaos team.

A chaos team can hire the goblin star players, some of which have right stuff.

official rules are LRB3.0 + the 2004 rules review (Galak is working on getting out the LRB4.0 I think)

The Vault rules on the experimental forum are exactly that, experimental. They might become the official rules sometme in 2006/07, but that might not happen with the downsizing of Fanatic.

Mot tournaments will use either LRB 3 or LRB 3 with the Rules Review 04.

Also, the rules on the UK Specialist Games BB.com site are the official rules. The ones on some of the non-UK sites have (or have had) typos in them (Block being a Stregnth skill on the German rules list for example). If possible, always use the ones from the BB.com site.

To answer you're other questions:

1) As Gortex said above.

2) (The 1st one! Wink ) - You can't buy mutants for the Chaos team, but Warriors can gain them on a skill roll of a Double. So the Chaos mutant human figures are Warriors with mutations.
2) (The 2nd one! Wink ) - In the Vault experimental rules, you just count the value of the skill rolled, SPP's no longer count n any player.

There is still one last thing no one explained to me.

The minotaur thing.

Is is because all big guy have this ability, either they have the opportunity to use it or not.

ok...
dead easy GW dont publish rules in print for some reason. Dowload via GW the "living rule book" v3 now, and get the rules review. They update every year but in all honesty is pretty much same thing as before.
Go paint a team and find mates to play - beer and munkies not optional
