Or more correctly Scotish help.
This is a pretty international board so I think I should get a good response.
I'm going to Scotland real soon and I have received conflicting advice.
I was told and planned on mainly using my debit card (Visa) for transactions and was told most places would take that.
As far as cash goes I have heard that both Euros and Pounds are the preferred currency.
I'd like to have minimal cash on me but I definitely need some. I'd like to avoid getting both if I can.
Which is the preferred method of currency in Scotland? Keep in mind this will mainly be used for taxis, buses, and buying some Nessie souviniers.
Any help would be appreciated. |

Euros will be hard to spend so don't bother with them. The scots also have their own pounds but are exaclty the same as English pounds. They do still have a 1 pound note where we only have the pound coin now. |

When I went over for my honeymoon, I used Visa, which was accepted everywhere I went, and Pounds for taxi/cash situations. Whoever said Euros didn't know what they were talking about. |

I'd take travellers checks with me (in Pounds currency). They are safe and accepted everywhere. I f you loose them you have insurance on them and you can get substitue checks within a very short time (1-2 days). If you need cash, you can either go to a bank and cash them there or go to a shop, buy something small and get the difference back in cash.
I'd say take like 50 pounds in cash to start with (airport, taxi, etc) and use the rest with travellers checks (how much ever you think you'll need). Credit cards are usually accepted everywhere, but Murphy is everywhere as well (the one thing you reeaaaalllly want is in the store which doesn't take CC) |

Yeah that's sorta what I figure will happen. I don't have any real tourist plans outside the wedding except that my buddy's dad and I are both geeks for "unexplained mysteries" type stuff. Loch Ness is about an hour away. We're renting a car to go there. Not sure what to expect as far as how we can look around. I'm guessing there's plenty overpriced tours or boat rides and probably a ton of road side shacks selling plush Nessies and postcards along the way. |
