Ok, this question is stemming from the fact that my table-top mini for my Skaven Thrower has died 4 times in the 6-8 games that I have played with it. I certainlyt need to remove the cursed model from my case/team, but I am wondering if I might not just do without it. Might I be better developing a GR as my thrower?
It seems like a waste of skill rolls to develop a gutter runner as my promary thrower, but I am also tired of scraping his fur off the pitch only to start over and have it happen again. Might the extra speed help me keep the "Thrower" out of trouble? (Not to mention the AG 4 benefits.)
What do you think? |

Gutters are fine as stand in throwers, but if you gotta make a play and have a few other dodges its nice to have a reroll with the pass and sure hands that a thrower starts with.
I would keep developing a Thrower, eventually they'll not get killed and pick up a couple skills that make it alot easier to throw the ball than worrying about burning a reroll on a gutter who rolls a 1 for his pass.
Finally, if you've got a thrower and 4 Gutters, you can send 4 gutters deep to form part of a cage around one of them and then have the thrower in your back field to pass the ball with. If the gutters in the cage have skills like Diving Tackle and Diving Catch, you've got a good shot at a 2 turn TD there.
Anyways, those are my 2 cents. |

definitely a possibility. You can grab spps pretty quick with the gutter to cure the sure hands problem. I wouldn't rush the gr into the line though, that ST 2 will make him more brittle than your thrower. I can see a 9 2 4 7, dodge, sure hands, pass, block, sidestep superstar in your future.

See...here is my problem with that...
I like going Block first with the Gutter Runners(for obvious reasons...and assuming a non-doubles roll) but in the progression above the doubles is the second roll...from therea "normal" GR has so many funn possibilities that it seems almost painful to take Pass.
I was one freaking SPP away from having Block on that thrower...then all my problems would be solved. |

That is strange... a skaven thrower should play backfield and not to take any punishment
I think you were very unlucky |

I think you have been very unlucky with your throwers, your thrower should be playing backfield and thereby avoiding the beating. I would stay with a thrower and try to develop him, do a bit of SPP horing with him by keeping a gutter in the back and pass the ball to the gutter and hand if off to the thrower again. |

Skaven Gutter Runners are better in the backfield than a thrower. A thrower is just a lineman with a couple extra skills and can throw the ball once and a while. Concentrate on the Gutters and let the Throwers die. |

if u need to pass with skavens u're probably doing the wrong things.
u're faster than the ball .... so runnnnnnnnnnnnn.
use your blitzer to have a hole in the defense and just run in.
the thrower is not so usefully, develop it with block or, crazy way, skill him as fast as possible to have DP in the second game of the league |

being able to pass makes the Skaven a huge threat though and you shouldn't give up on the chance to do so. A pass/hand-off can move the ball from one end of the field to another in 1 turn. |

And running 4 gutter runners into the other half of the pitch, can make a nightmare for your oppoent's defense when you have the ball. He can only blitz one of them, which leaves three potential scorers in the next turn! |

gutters alone in the other half pitch?
nice way to have them killed . Spazzfist says "he can only blitz one". and I say... blitz only one and foul him . pay attention to ur gutter.. u have only 4 of it.
try to bring your cage in the other half... linerats on the top and the ballcarrier (a gutter) behind your ratline.
than u can try to score.
pass with skaven is not so sure, u can burn a lot of reroll trying it. |

4 GR in the other half?
Be sure the opponent can't touch your ball carrier or crash your cage..
Let me front just 7 player and you'll see your skavens fly..
And Yena is right. Blitz him and foul him.

Throwers aren't absolutely necessary, but a sure hands 3 AG will fail a pickup only 1 in 9 times, while a 4 AG player will fail 1 in 6. They're valuable at lower TR because the are more reliable and they're cheaper. When you need your breakaway, run up and hand it off to the Gutter or to a lineman if you're building up your team.
In long term league play, building up a core of lineman who can support the gutters and say on the field is huge. Gutters will get their chances eventually. |

I can't think of any reason NOT to have Throwers, since they are effectively Linemen Supremes. Skaven are cheap enough that before long you should have your whole team full anyways. Gutters CAN handle the ball, but the more of them you have to keep backfield, the fewer potential receivers you have in your opponent's half of the pitch.
