We are NAF approved.

I thought I might add a bit of a back story to the charity aspect of this tournament.

Two years ago my wife and I welcomed a baby daughter, Alayna, to our family, she was beautiful and tiny and precious, we took her home after a few days in the hospital and she seemed like any other healthy baby. A day after we were home we got a call from the hospital telling us that there is an issue with her blood work and we need to come back in and be readmitted, my wife inquired what the nature of the problem was and we were told that she had elevated levels of phenylalanine and that in all probability she had a serious condition that if left untreated would result in damage to her brain and mental retardation so severe that she would be institutionalized for life. This disorder is more commonly called PKU short for Phenylketonuria a rare disease where the body is incapable of breaking down protein properly causing a build up of phenylalanine in her blood, soon breaking through the blood brain barrier, causing massive brain damage. Phenylalanine is extremely toxic to the brain, it retards growth and causes irreparable damage to brain tissue.

Luckily for Alayna, PKU is diagnosed early through a newborn screening test that looks for a number of diseases, known as the "heel prick" this test has been saving baby's lives in North America for decades. If caught very early PKU can be held at bay, mostly, by adherence to a very strict diet extremely low in foods that contain phenylalanine. The problem is, almost all foods have phenylalanine to some degree or another, so everything Alayna eats is weighed out to the gram and she must drink a special medical shake that replaces what her body can not make. The PKU diet is one of the top ten most successful medical treatments ever, giving back lives to those who would otherwise lose them previous to any treatment. PKU is for life and so is the diet. More hope is on the horizon, however, with new experimental drugs that show incredible results and PKU is a very good candidate disease for genetic therapies as well.

Alayna is a happy, clever, funny and mischievous two year old kid and if you met her you'd never know she was any different from any other kid, thanks to all of the treatments that are available to her.

I'll provide you with a link if you want to read more about PKU here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phenylketonuria

Last year I held a Thunderkrunch "Deathbowl V.S. PKU" deathbowl tournament, to raise money for CanadianPKU an advocacy group, mostly made up of people who live with PKU and their families. Their organization is trying to get "best practice" treatment for the sufferers of PKU in Canada. They do great work. Through their advocacy efforts the government of British Columbia, as of January 1st of this year started providing $250/month, to people like my daughter with PKU, for the use for purchase of expensive necessary medical foods. Amazingly and sadly, PKU is treated differently all across Canada and the treatment availability is less in some places than others.

Through the Deathbowl tournament last year we raised $1000.00 for CanadianPKU last year with an extremely successful event, 20 coaches and three games of Deathbowl was fantastic!

Thanks for reading all of this, I really appreciate it.
