Just a few questins on the new master chef rules:
1) Can a master chef gain more rerolls for a team than the opposing team has? The fact that the other team loses a reroll for each one gained by the chef in in parenthesis, making it look like it's not necessary, just a nice bonus.
2) When do you have to make these rolls and allocate money for them? Before or after handicaps are resolved or is it whenever you want (makes a difference if handicaps affect rerolls and you can only steal rerolls the opponent has or if you just want to spend enough to take all rerolls).
Thanks! |

The old master chef took 'm even if the opponent didn't have enough, so I would say you can gain more than the opponent has.

Step 1, when you hire him sounds like the time to do it. |

But now the master chef is free and takes the place of the head coach so he is just there so there doesn't appear to be a natural time that the roll must take place. |

I'm not current with the rules, but I would say as you are paying out money to affect the game then during the hire freebooters stage would be the most appropriate time. |

Hmmmm...
off the top of my head ... I think ....
1) You should not be able to take more than they have (at least that's how I've been playing it).
2) I'd rule you would have had to purchase the extra 20k rolls before knowing the handicap rolls as the freeboot phase is before handicap rolls in the rules.

Well, in the 3rd ed rules, if they didn't have enough, you'd get even more than you would otherwise! For example, if you're supposed to steal 2 and they have 2, they go down to zero and you go up by 2. If you're supposed to steal 3 and they have 2, you go up by 1 more to compensate, so they still go down to zero and you go up by 4.
I know the rule has changed a lot, but i think that you should at least get all the rerolls you're entitled to no matter how many the other team has. |

I don't think the rule was ever as you described. I should check my Death Zone book at home, but I think the rule has always existed as a variant of this:
1. Roll the D6 and divide in half.
2. Add the resulting number of re-rolls to your track.
3. Subtract the same amount from the opponent, but he can never be reduced below 0.
I have LRB 1.0 here, and it didn't give you extra re-rolls if your opponent went below 0. But perhaps I've just forgotten that old detail.
Can anyone clarify this with certainty?

From what you just stated you support Zombies statement:
point 2 read "Add the resulting number of re-rolls to your track"...that means to me: I will add the same number of re-rolls to my track as the 50%D6 (I think it's rounding down) displays...that is not bound to how many RR my opponent had at that point.
On top of that the opponent looses re-rolls up to the number of what the dice tell you (50%) (point 3)
That means indeed that it's possible that you can gain more re-rolls than what your oppponent has available.
Note: I'm typing this without having the actual (or older) rules in front of me, I'm commenting on what I read in Chet's post. |

Yes, but Zombie also said that you gain an extra RR for each one that your opponent was short by. In Zombie's example a team losing 3 RR when they only have 2 would mean that the Halfling team would gain an additional 1 over and above the 3 they had already gained.
I don't remember this from when I played Halflings in 3rd Ed., but that doesn't mean it was never played that way. |

Okay ... putting on my how it should work hat.
I really think the Master Chef should be a reroll stealer with his current rules. I do not think a Halfling team should be able to pay 20k to "freeboot" as many rerolls as they desire and can roll 2+ for.
So regardless of 3rd edition and despite the many folks that claimed me becoming a BBRC member would mean I'd seek out as many ways as I could to make Halflings better. I really disagree that the Chef should be able to earn the team more rerolls than the opponent has with the new rules.
