In our league, there exists a house rule to wild animal, because the LRB has been interpreted as the WA has to bloch the NEAREST player ALWAYS, even if this is is a TEAM-MATE.
First, I am the newest coach, so my say is light, but if I can get a ruling on this heavy forum, then perhaps the STANARD rules could be put in play. in our league too. I think that would be good, since our board-game games and the internet ones come to be played by different rules.
The way I interpret the LRB, page 26, is that the WA has to block or blitz ONLY if they are ADJACENT (i.e. next to) an OPPOSING player. Otherwise they MUST GO FIRST, but need then NOT blitz, but can actually be used for something creative, like just moving, running with the ball, or standing still.
What is right, what is wrong? |

Point 2 first - correct, if they are not ADJACENT to a play they do not need block.
Point 1 - they do not need to block a team mate, it's in the rules pg. 26. Making it so they DO have to block makes a wild animal even more of a risky proposition to take and unbalances it too much.
In short, you are absolutley right and your league is making the Wild Animal skill too unfair to Rat Ogres & Minotaurs. |

I agree with Indigo.
If it were the way your league plays it, you couldn't pay me enough to play a Rat Ogre. The WA is bad enough as it is, let alone I MUST blitz or block one of my teammates if they are closer than my opponet.
It's WA, not Wild Animal who gets easily confused.
Also if your WA is down at the start of the turn, they do not have to blitz adjancent opponets as it says if a WA is 'STANDING' at the beginning of their move. |

Things to remember
1) WA must go first. Always. Failure to go 1st is an IP - and then you must stop your current action and move the WA or its another IP and a turnover(so no burning a TRR to move later in the turn).
2) You have to block or blitz if you are standing next to an opponent at the start of your action. You must do this (i.e. it isn't an IP not to block, you just have to).
In general this makes WA a liability until they get Block and they only become a positive factor in the team with Pro and/or Leader (which can be used on Big Guys). |

I think that the coaches in your league must understand that WA played the way they play it is totally unfair.
I would never play with a WA in your league!
If this is a "friend" league, they should understand and change the ruling. If they're not your friends and they won't change the rule, can't you just change league?

Thanks for all your valuable replies. What I did not tell you, is WHAT the house rule is. It says that:
"Wild animal: Roll 1d6 first. If a one is rolled, blitz or block closest player. If a one is not rolled, the player may be used later this turn. No assists are permitted. If the roll is forgotten, an illegal procedure may be declared. ".
Second, yes, these guys are my friends, but since I am the newest... but this is not such a big thing for me, I just want to make our league simpler and better, in this case by using what I think the already fine LRB rule. I think you guys are contributing to that end! Thanks. |

Hi Darkson. Do you mean our house rule? I would't know, haven't been at it for more than a few months, and my references are the internet LRB version 2.0 and the 2002 handbook that came with the boardgame I bought from the US a couple a months ago. |

I don't think they are planning on changing it much, if at all, from the LRB 2 version. Best to check the hot list of topics for October at Galak's site. |
