Do the tournaments you play in tend to have a lot of socialising going on before/during/after the event? Do you think it effects the behaviour at the tourney, and the overall feel of the tourney as a whole?

The reason I ask is this came up in another thread:

I still don't like that system either.

IMO, in any system, the baseline should have:

1 win >= 2 Draws
1 Draw >= 2 losses

That system in my experience leads to folks going home and leaving the tournament after the first two games as they have no hope to compete if they didn't win the first two games (or in your case the first game).

You might not have that issue in Oz ... but I DEFINITELY have it where I am. So the point system because of this insures that if you are playing close and tight and lose a game ... you are not completely out of the running.

Most of us were fairly bemused at the idea someone wouldn't want to play out the rest of a tourney based on the fact you are no longer in contention.

My theory is that its because there aren't sufficient other reasons for those people to want to play beyond the competition. For me, the competition is actually a fairly minor part of why I go to tourneys (which isn't to say I'm not trying my hardest to win) compared to things like meeting up with a bunch of mates I haven't seen in a while and socialising.

I know Ian and myself tried quite hard to encourage socialising at Eucalyptus Bowl as a way of making the tourney better, and I thought it worked very well.

What do others think?

Well, after spending the weekend at the DeathBowl in Montreal, I gotta say that the tournaments are all about Socializing, I mean, we're playing a game after all.

I've had fun playing, but the stress when you are winning and have to keep winning to ensure that tournament win isn't worth it. The fun that you have between games (and on the night between a 2 day tournament) is what makes the tournaments worth going to.

Yea, its frustrating to loose, especially when you're dice go bad, but for the most part, people stick it out and still have a good time in the end.

If someone wants to quit because they can't win, let them go, they're probably not worth having around anyways.

For many, the pressure of winning isn't a problem. No way would I drop a tourney just because I haven't won my first 2 games.

But not coming back on Day 2 might help your NAF rnakings from plummeting completely from another 3 whippings? Cool

Nah! People should come back - they've paid and all. But really, the social side of things is pretty hard to structure into a tournament really well. The best I've seen is the Halfling Dinner Mug tournament run by Gregg Giersch. AFAIK there they play in a hotel in the middle of nowhere and they do structured things after the BB stops. Meals are included in the tournament cost.

I'm hoping that for Eucalyptus Bowl next year we will be able to do something a bit more structured. We have a suitable venue and the possibility is there, and I think what happened on the Saturday night certainly helped the tourney as a whole.

I realise tourneys in convention settings make it harder to do these things, but we managed a pretty decent gathering on both the Saturday and Sunday nights of MOAB, and hope to have a bit of a group together at the one spot for Cancon.

There are prize contests (pub quizzes, call out questions, etc...) where between rounds people can do intereact.... and there should be an effort made to offer a meeting place on the night between a two day tournament, so the locals and out of towners can mingle.... I've noticed that coaches who know each other, even if from out of town, tend to get together and make their own plans but the TO should try to have a place for afterhours socialising....

Glad to see you got home safe and sound Jim Smile

Hanging out is definitely the highlight of the event. A tourney can be phenomenal (ie Deathbowl) but the social aspect makes the trip even more memorable.

Erm-what's the logic behind this? I think that NAF rankings wise it should be completly the opposite. If you play swiss system and lose the first three games, then you should get another opponent also finding himself on the bottom table after a bad day 1. Consequently, you increase the chance of a win with every loss due to "weaker" opponents. Wink Hehehe, if this is no motivation for comming back on day 2 to fork out a win I don't know what is.... Socialising is a major reason why I go to gaming conventions/tourneys, and why I prefer live play rather than online. The gang at DBIII was great and I definitely hope to go back there next year. If the social atmosphere at a tourney was lacking, I wouldn't go back.

Cheers,
Maureen

I mainly go to tournies to socialise When the event is in a pub or similar so much the better. TBH I was a bit surprised when I came to Oz and realised a lot of people just went home. IMO it makes the scene sooo much better when you have beers and maybe silly games afterwards.

Sometimes being out of the way can be good - but you need some things (beer etc) available for people to buy and a decent range of places to eat.
