Can you clarify the right rule for us please. We are using the LRB rules.
If you decide to blitz and the square next to your opponent contains the ball, when you enter it do attempt to pickup the ball first then blitz or the other way round?
Thanks in advance. |

We play that you (the blitzer) can decide what order you want to do the actions in. I'm not sure if this is strictly correct, but that's how we work it in my league. |

the official rule is that whenever you enter the square with the ball you MUST pick it up first before any other actions. No matter what you may have done or be planning to do in the future, as soon as the player moves into the square the pickup must be attempted. |

You have to pick up the ball first and make the block after - and if you fail the pick up you don't get to make the block. |

As noted correctly by Indigo and Doubleskulls, you must attempt to pick up the ball whenever you are taking an action and end up standing in that square. Check "Picking Up The Ball" in the Movement section of the LRB.

Hmmm..and if i blitz a player holding the ball and the ball lands on me and i fail the cath. It isn't a turn over? Right?
We're making the rules for our next league 's season. And the boss read somewhere that it was a turn over. Could someone point out a revelant official argument for that. i tried to look for that in the LRB but i'm not a guru
Does it have something to do with missing the cach and still catching the ball with another of your players. It isn't a turnover either?
Thanx |

The BB Mantra:
"Failing a catch roll is never by itself a turnover. A failed pickup roll is always a turnover."
No matter what you look at with the rules, the above is always true.

You suffer a ball-induced turnover in the following scenarios:
1. You attempt to pick up the ball and fail.
2. You fumble the ball when throwing it as part of a Pass action.
3. You throw a pass (not fumbled) which is not ultimately caught by a member of your team.
4. You throw a team-mate who is holding the ball, and said team-mate fails to land properly.
I believe those are the only turnovers specifically tied to the ball. (In other words, "You fail a dodge with a player holding the ball" is a turnover, but the turnover would occur even if the player was empty handed.)
See the LRB for details. Remember: "When it doubt, look it up!"

Cheers for the info That wasmy opinion, but having it confirmed by other members will help me convince the other of the right way.
That's really annoying to have players calling turnovers on players failing to catch the ball on kicks off!!! |

You can't have a turnover there as it is not your teams turn, therefore you can't have a turnover. If the ball lands on you during the kick itself you get a free chance to catch it. |

i know but some coachs are used to pay that way. And they're so sincerly convinced they're right that if you don't argue with official stuff, they won't agree.
Same thing for failing a catch on none wanted bouncing ball. And as well, they want to use sure hands on bouncing balls! for them, if the ball was dropped, it's on the floor! So it's sure hands!
I know those things from tournies, playing with foreigner/more experiencd coachs. But the people i play with have been playing like that for years. So it's not always easy to point out the right stuff. |
