Information
The Maltese Gauntlet – 23rd October 2022

The Maltese Gauntlet is the 3rd NAF approved Tournament hosted by Deeside Defenders, and the 2nd to be held at our new home at the Daniel Owen Centre situated in the town of Mold, North Wales. A 3 game, resurrection tournament using the Swiss system, with a capacity for 24 coaches.

With the permission of the Euro Bowl Malta Tournament Organiser, we will be using the same team building rules which will be in use at the upcoming Euro Bowl this November (apart from the Sneaky Git/ Bribes Condition). A massive thank you to Janninu (Euro Bowl TO) for giving me his blessing.

So, if you need to practice your Euro Bowl Rosters before you travel to Malta, The Maltese Gauntlet is the ideal Tournament for you.

The entry fee for NAF members is £15, a lunchtime buffet is included, which will be provided by our on-site café. You will need to be an NAF member to enter as this is an NAF sanctioned event.

Entry and payment cut off for the tournament is midnight on Monday 17th October.

Payments for entry should be sent by PayPal to;
DeesideDefenderstournaments@gmail.com and please make sure this is using the friends and family option. Add your name, coach name and NAF number in the additional comments section on the payment, as well as the best email address to contact you at.

All team rosters will be checked in advance to save time on the day. You will be issued with a copy of your submitted roster on the tournament, this copy should be used throughout the day and be available to you opponents when requested. Rosters must be submitted at DeesideDefenderstournaments@gmail.com no later than midnight on Monday 17th October. If you have any questions or would like a PDF copy of this information, please use the above email address.

Every Coach who pays the entry fee and submits their roster by the 30th of September, will receive a bonus gift.

Schedule

This is a 3 game event with a tight, action-packed schedule (please arrive promptly as lateness may mean missing the first round).

08:30 - 09:15 - Registration
09:30 - 11:45 - Round 1
11:45 - 12.30 - Break (Lunch)
12:30 - 14:45 - Round 2
14:45 - 15:15 - Break
15:15 - 17:30 - Round 3
17:30 - 18:00 - Awards

We will hopefully have a full selection of players on the day, in the event of an uneven number though, it is possible that one player each round may receive a bye. Obviously, we will do everything possible to avoid this.

Scoring

Scoring will be as follows:

Win - 3 points
Draw - 1 points
Loss - 0 points

Tie-breakers:

Coaches on the same points score will be separated as follows:

1/. Strength of Schedule
2/. Net TDs + Net Casualties
3/. Net Touchdowns
4/. Net Casualties
5/. Touchdowns Scored
6/. Casualties Inflicted
7/. Coin toss

Team Building

Each Team has a total of 1,150,000gp to spend on roster creation and must hire a minimum of 11 Players.

Any GP unspent at roster creation are lost and all Teams are considered to have the same Current Team Value (CTV) for the purpose of inducements and prayers to Nuffle.

This is a resurrection tournament, no SPP are gained, and injuries, casualties or deaths do not carry on from one game to the next.

Players added to a Team roster mid game as a result of the Masters of Undeath or Plague Ridden special rule are removed from the roster at the end of the game and do not carry on to the next.

Permitted inducements are:
• Halfling Master Chef 0-1
• Bloodweiser Kegs 0-2
• Bribes 0-3
• Wandering Apothecaries 0-2
• Mortuary Assistant 0-1
• Plague Doctor 0-1

All other inducements including Star Players are not permitted unless indicated by the Tier Restrictions below.

Teams are separated into 1 of 5 Tiers and offered Tier specific skills packs (labelled A to D).

Each Team is permitted to stack 2 Primary Skills on a maximum of 1 Player at the cost of both 1 Primary Skill and 1 Secondary Skill. This can only be done once.
All skills must be chosen and cannot be random.

EXAMPLE

A Coach playing with a Human Team, chooses to use skill pack ‘B’. They stack Mighty Blow (+1) and Tackle onto one Blitzer. Doing so would cost the Coach 1 Primary and 1 Secondary Skill at Team creation.

A Player who is assigned a secondary skill may choose to take a primary skill instead.

For Skill packs which allow star Players, the following Star Players have an additional skill cost as specified below:

• Griff Oberwald, Morg’N’Thorg: 3 Primary Skills
• Deeproot Strongbranch, Hakflem Skuttlespike, Kreek Rustgouger, Wilhelm Chaney: 1 Primary Skill
If the Team does not have enough skills available in the chosen skill pack to pay the above skill cost, that star Player cannot be taken.
Star Players can only be induced after 11 Players have already been rostered.

EXAMPLE

1. A Coach playing with a Halfling Team, chooses to use skill pack ‘D’. They want to add both Griff Oberwald and Deeproot Strongbranch to the Roster. These two Star Players cost an additional 4 skills in total; however, skill pack ‘D’ only gives a total of 3 primary skills and therefore the Coach cannot induce this combination of star Players.

2. A Coach playing with a Wood Elf Team, chooses to use skill pack ‘C’. They want to add Morg’N’Thorg to the Roster. This costs them 3 skills and leaves the Team with 0 additional skills to assign to the rest of the roster.

Should two Players with the same Star Player face each other, both Coaches can make use of the Star Player.

Time keeping

The timetable is based on 2 hour 15 minutes per match which equates to just over 4 minutes per turn for 32 turns (i.e. 8 turns per player per half). No overtime is played. It is up to both coaches to ensure that games are completed within the allocated time. The Tournament Organisers have the right to end matches as they stand if the matches are not finished within the allocated time.
Any coach found to be deliberately stalling for time to run-out a match can be penalised with a points deduction at the discretion of the Tournament Organiser.

Rule Queries

If at any stage you are faced with a situation that can’t be solved between the two coaches and by reference to this Info pack, speak to a Tournament Organiser (TO).
The TO’s decision is final.

What to Bring with You

Models: Teams should be painted to a “decent” 3 colour minimum standard, based and clearly numbered (preference is for the numbers to be on the front and back of the base but not compulsory).

Unpainted teams may be cursed by Nuffle, for not paying him due honour and respect.

ANY COACH WHO TURNS UP WITH AN UNPAINTED TEAM, WHICH DOESN’T MEET THE “DECENT" 3 COLOUR MINIMUM STANDARD, WILL GIVE YOUR OPPONENT A FREE ROLL ON THE NUFFLE TABLE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE GAME AT THE PRAYERS TO NUFFLE STAGE.

Teams are also required to be clear representations of the races they purport to be (not necessarily GW) with clear differences between positionals. Skill rings or bands should be used to show additional skills and these can be quickly explained to your opponent during setup.

Positionals should be recognisable and representative. If you are unsure, please check in advance with the Tournament Organisers.

Dice: Blocking dice x 3, D6 x 2, D8 x 1 & a D16 x 1.

If you are using non GW or NAF dice and they are difficult to read or the symbols on the dice are less than obvious at portraying what results they are supposed to be representing, you will need to bring a standard set with you as well.

Also, you must be prepared to share your dice with your opponent, if asked.

This is a requirement of entry, payment indicates agreement.
