North America - Rene Roy wins Death Bowl III !

Post subject: Rene Roy wins Death Bowl III !
Just a few quick notes about Death Bowl III. Even though the tournament is still months away registrations are now open at www.thedeathbowl.com ( for now also the House Rulez web site Smile )

Tournament rules are currently being hammered out for this years event.

Since the 7's round went so well last year it'll be worth full points for this years tournament. I've added Ogres and Vampires to the list this year. Ogres are going to be hard to beat in the 7's round. These are the tentative rosters for the 7's round. Thoughts?

If the Ogre teams stays the way it is then I'm inclined to say yes. Kind of hard to justify a team full of Ogres and not letting Halfings have their one tree now isn't it Wink

Ogres in the final round are going to have a big target painted on them. Smart opponents will gang up and take them out before they are taken out themselves. Ogres may be tough but there's little they can do against three opponents and no referee.

By the way...if someone has stunties in the final...can another team's Big Guy throw them? (Assuming that the two teams agree to it.)

should be 0-10 ogres, 0-3 gobbos, based off other rosters.

The ogres are the positional players on the Ogre team not the Gobbo's. All other teams have had their positional players halved so with the Ogre tem they get 6 instead of 12. They only get 6 gobs max to start with so there's no point making that higher because they won't have them on their team in the first place to pick from Smile Remember that a coach has to build his 7's roster from players he has already on his standard roster. You are not building a new team for that round. So if on your standard roster you only have 4 ogres then you can't take more than that for your 7's team. Basically you're deciding who you'll be sitting out for that round.
Hoshi_Komi - Apr 19, 2005 - 09:09 PM
Post subject:
gobbos are the positional on the ogre roster. Ogres are the lineman...they are 0-12. It's like saying beastmen are the postionals on chaos team.

ogres won't even have to change their roster for 7's.

they will show up with 5 ogres 6 gobbs and 2 rr's or 6 ogres 5 gobs and 1 rr.
so for 7's they have the same roster?????? ---seems like every other team gets punished for playing 7's.....

Ogres are tough enough in regular bloodbowl....if you make the gobs 0-3 then at least they lose a couple players just like everyone else.

TR 100 for ogres in 7's vs TR 90 for just about every other team. U allowing handicaps for this?

Ogres can't take less than 5 ogres since they won't have an 11 man roster if they do.

Other teams get punished no matter when they play against ogres Laughing

You can only make a 10 player roster for 7's. Only 7 of which get to play on the field. You're correct that Ogre teams will show up with one of the team lineups above. Of that I'm pretty sure. But it won't really make any difference if we do it your way or my way except that your way they will only be able to make an 8 or 9 player roster. Either way I do it they'll still have a full Ogre compliment on the field. It'll just be a difference of having 1, 2, or 3 gobs in the reserves box. If I do it 6 Ogres and 6 gobs they'll take the full ogres they have and fill up on gobs. The same thing will happen with 10 ogres and 3 gobs. except that they won't be able to make a full roster Razz Do you think having less gobs in the reserves box will be enough to event the teams out?

Thinking about it I guess at least with your roster they do loose something. I just don't think it will be enough to matter. Playing that Ogre team in the 7's is going to be painfull for anyone Shocked
Hoshi_Komi - Apr 20, 2005 - 07:11 AM
Post subject:
well the way to beat ogres is to take out their gobs and force them to carry the ball with a player that is slower, has a harder time to pick up the ball and might not move. So having them lose 2-3 gobs is something.

and if I was playing ogres I'd just drop down to 4 ogres and 6 gobs for 7's. .....that'd be pretty competitve I think.
CyberHare - Apr 20, 2005 - 07:23 AM
Post subject:
I changed the roster to your suggested roster. At the very least they will have to protect the few Gobs they have. Either that or they'll play it as I would and not give a flying rats butt about the ball and just pound the snot out of their opponent. It's hard to stop an Ogre from scoring when you've got no one left on the field Wink

So are you going to get yerself up to the DB this year or are you still afraid Razz

As an Ogre coach, I can tell you that the opponent often doesn't have to. Ogres tend to stop themselves at the most inopportune times. Razz It's funny but frustrating.

And if you are playing Skaven the inopportune times are multiplied.

Ok the rules are mostly updated. A couple of noteworthy changes.....

      Quote:
Skills - Dirty Player

The Dirty Player skill will give a +1 to either the armor roll or the injury roll.

and also

      Quote:
The Range Ruler

When measuring distances on the range ruler measure from the center point of the passing players square to the center point of the receiving players square. Please remember that some of the boards being used at The Death Bowl are not "official" boards. In fact the official boards themselves are not all of the same or consistent scale. A certain amount of good will and good sense will go a long way towards figuring out if a pass is within range or not.

And that should be it for this year. We're using a modified LRB3 kickoff table. Not the LRB4 modified table with additional tourney modifications. Either way I provide everyone with a copy of the correct kickoff table at the tourney so there's no confusion.

The rules do sound interesting but I'm not going to include them for this year. I'd like to see the idea get run in a little more before I drop it into the Death Bowl and BB7's formats.

BTW people shouldn't hesitate to pre-register for The Death Bowl. It doesn't cost anything and I'm going to be sending out Tournament Rulebooks to people who have pre-registered.

Hey kids!!!!!!!!

I'm back, well sorta, I'm in a comic book store in Toronto on a compurter (pay by the hour). No computer hook up at home yet. I am working again, continuing my Glazier Apprenticeship.I work in Toronto Mon. to Friday & crash at a buddies place in Scarborough (is that spelled right?) during the week. So if any of the locals want to be schooled in BB, let me know, I'll check back here again.

I have healed my wounds from being fired from the Casino. @#$&#$#@&#$@& the Casino!!!!!!!!!! Evil or Very Mad

I'll make sure if I only make it to one more tourney this year, that it will be the Death-Bowl! (One condition! I don't have to play Zombie!)

I'll be back online soon enough.

Bye, Rod.

@clan -skaven Bring it on bee-yotch! Stay over one more night (being Friday) and I will give you a schoolin'!

@g-ken - I would believe it, like I said, where else would a Chaos coach be able to have so many mutations available to them? It sounds great - Q'ermitt will certainly put them to use (all that travelling through the portals of the old ones which are now corrupted by chaos!)

@Cyberhare - I will definetely pre-register! I have been missing the tourneys I wanted to attend, but Deathbowl is a MUST! (Too bad about the chaos decision, however....)

just in our tourneys. It worked well and gives a tiny little boost to teams that are consistently losers at tourneys.

Plus if you think about it....what mutation is a game breaker--I limited my tourney to one claw just to prevent lamer chaos? if they are taking a mutation---they aren't taking block, sure hands or guard.....

The 2 Chaos teams in the Phrakus went 6th and 12th out of 12.

Definitely not overpowering in our tournament.

Post subject:
From what I understand, the rule for the 3rd round pick at the Philly Pharkus was just a doubles would be rolled for that round. So, Chaos/Skaven could take a mutation, but it left a doubles roll for everyone else.

I don't think doing it that way would have a huge effect for the Chaos teams. Sure, they might get a claw that they wouldn't normally have, but other teams would be picking up a skill that would make them better as well.
jaylazer - May 11, 2005 - 02:46 PM
Post subject:
We allowed either one player to take a doubles roll or one player who already had a normal skill could be given a 2nd normal skill.

So they could have taken the Claw/Razor Sharp Claw combo if they had chosen. They chose to spread their skills out more though and didn't double up with anyone.

The Chaos team at the Brouhaha finished 1/1/3 (W/T/L). As long as you limit it to one Claw, the data seems to indicate that it works out. Although I think this was only the third tourney with the rule.

I have already looked into tickets for the leafs game that night. They will not be on sale to the open public until sometime next week. The lady that I spoke to said that the tickets are near impossible to get. The Bell Centre sells out for every Leaf game as we all know. Season ticket holders usually grab most of the single tickets that are left as they get first crack at purchasing them. We all may have to get scalper seats. I am for sure interested and will keep in touch with everyone reagarding this matter.

This is an important Death Bowl update...

It has been mentioned elsewhere that the Canadian Major, The Spike! tournament, will not be held this year. Due to this it has been decided that the 2005 Death Bowl will be granted the increased tournament K value of a major. Now what does that mean. For the immediate time frame, not a lot. At present the proposed ranking changes have not yet been programmed into the system yet. This means that the K value of a tournament is presently determined by the number of coaches present. For the future though, it will mean that once the system is updated, Death Bowl III will not be subject to the 30 coach limit on K value for non majors. Games played at Death Bowl III will be worth the same as all the other major tournaments.

So essentially, though Death Bowl III has not been titled a "major", it is now the major tournament in Canada for 2005.

To all the boys coming from Southern, Ontario.

I have already got a lot of inquiries as to how we are planning to get to Montreal i.e who's driving.

I know the owner of a car rental company and i can get a van for a real good deal.

We would need 6 or 7 people to make it ideal as the price each person would have to contribute would be less.

So who's in? Let me know and once i have about 6 confirmed then i will get a price together.

Thank you and have a good day.

1) Is the mutation rule going to be in effect for sure -that chaos players can take mutations as regular skills?

2) What will happen with the Free Rotters if the Beast of Nurgle kills an opposing player? Will I get one for the game? Or not at all?

Thanks,

Spazz

Yes we are using the mutation rule. It's been updated on the webite and I worked it into the rule book.

No extra players. You play with what you came with. The Dark Angels have their own plans for the Dead Twisted Evil

The opponent now has to knock down the blodger and break AV 9...then Brian gets a 3+ save to ignore the injury.

Just wait until he breaks out the 1St Company with the Terminator Armour. Sad

Undead and Necromatic Teams have of course a Necromancer as their Head Coach. Unfortunately their ability to raise the dead will not work on players killed during this tournament. I'd rather an American win it than Zombie! (thought I'd never root for the USA in anything!)

It does not matter anyway, I'm bound to win a Tourney someday, it may as well be the 2005 DEATH-BOWL, that is as long as I do not meet Da Scum or Zombie (both have me without a win! 0 W, 1 T, 6 L. )

Between those I'm leaning towards Skaven, but who knows you may see me play a new team at the DB....

Ya I saw you at last years Death-Bowl!!!!

...... wait I beat you at last years Death-Bowl with my Skaven.

You have seem to given up with Skaven.... & if you count our last tourney game + the only TBBF game we have played, my Skaven are 2-0 vs. whatever pathethic roster you can try & asemble vs. me!!!!

So honestly, I suggest that you take your useless comments & shove em up the TBBF arse (since you are the "CAMISHIONOR") Everyone knows that the Death-Bowl has stayed in Montreal the first 2 years! It will be tough to grasp the AXE from those protecting it in Montreal!

I will promise you one thing, the only way a member of the TBBF will walk away with the Death-Bowl will be if myself (a non Torontonian wins the coveted prize!)

It's obvious that this years Death-Bowl will go to a native Montreal player, or an American, or any other Canadian other than the TBBF (except me, only reason I'm in the TBBF is because of work, trust me Niagara Falls is the true Ontario BloodBowl Capital!)

On a side note if anyone defeats Zombie, I'll buy you a pint!

& I was not talking about you Spazz I was referring to myself! (Need I remind you, that you lost to Garth? Sorry again Garth to bring this up again, but Spazz must learn not to confront me!) It will be me not you Spazz that will win the 2005 Death-Bowl, if no Americans or Montreal folk win or anyone else despite the TBBF from Ontario.....

Ok , yes there is an outside chance of Torg winning, did I say outside? Well I meant extreamly outside (even my buddy Talons from Niagara has a better chance of winning than Torg!) Sorry Torg, I know you are my leader in the right to claim Nuffle is a #$%&^(%($&($&^($&($&($%&*$&($(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But it is my right to also claim that you will bow before me with all the other Death-Bowl combatants, that I will be the Death-Bowl Champion! Oh & $%&^ NUFFLE!

Ok so why do I say the TBBF has no chance of winning the Death-Bowl? Well in the first Death-Bowl, it was 3 TBBF'rs VS. Zombie (Zombie won!) Death-Bowl 1 = TBBF is useless!

In Death-Bowl 2 we saw Ben (a TBBF so called elite) in the final round (as he was the year before) this time it was 2 Montreal folk vs. a TBBF (no challenge) & a Spikey haired Ottawa Gent! Well the Montreal folk showed the TBBF what teamwork is all about with the win! Montreal 2 W, 0 T, 0 L Everyone else (including & most of all the TBBF!) 0W, 0 T, 2 L !!!

TBBF give up, everyone knows that the only reason you look impressive in your own league is because of the cheesesy rules that you allow in your own league!

I should be the TBBF Commish! I will bring order to this pitiful excuse of a league trying for a 3rd time to win the Death-Bowl, only to make fools of themselves yet again (it will be like a trilogy.... Episode I , "The Zombie Menice" Episode II "The Repeat Rising of Montreal Blood-Bowl" Episode III has not been written, but my guess is it will be something like "The return of the Failure to the TBBF!")

Rod, you ARE an @$$, and your drunken memory is flawed! The first time I met you on the pitch with my wood elves, I absolutely schooled you, something like 5-2! I remember it because you spent the next year in here bragging how you were the worst Canadian coach in NAF! Very Happy You also talked about how you were a collective -9 in TDs for/against versus wood elves by playing myself and BUD that tourney. Razz

Then last DB I had terrible luck, and lost a lot, with many 1s rolled with the game on the line, including a close one to the Champ in O/T! So at best, we are 1-1 in tourney play.

So bring your little rats to DB, My Saurii want something to step on. That is one of my absolute favourite matchups with Lizards. If your memory is poor, just remember how I maimed your TBBF rat team with mine! Imagine Lizards instead... *drool!* HA HA HA!

And yes, people! I did mention that Clan Skaven has a TBBF team, and IS a member! Appears that he is turning into a bad seed though, and I might have to step on him. Whats that Rod? I think your team sheet needs an audit! Oops! A mistake! *riiiiiip!* Start over buddy! Wink

There's a rumor floating around that there may now be a 2005 Spike! event. When they're going to hold it I have no idea because the rest of the year other than December is pretty much booked. The smart move would be to hold it next April, 5 months away from the Chaos Cup. It's too late to hold it in September. October is The Death Bowl. November is the Chaos Cup. December is Xmas and not the best idea in the world.

In any case, The Death Bowl III tournament will have major status this year no matter what happens with the Spike! tournament.

Sorry to distract from the Deathbowl topic. Things are looking better and better for me to come. I should be able to committ for certain over this next week. Just some other details with work and such I need to address.

Still thinking on what team to play. My heart is with Dwarfs, but I don't know how well suited they are for the final round. Tough enough, sure, but fast enough is my question. If not my normal Dwarfs, I may consider Chaos Dwarfs.

LOL. To be honest I'm still not certain on what team I'm playing. I'd like to get some local guys together and try a deathbowl-style match to see how it plays out. I own 4 different BB teams: Dwarf, Chaos Dwarf, Human and Orc. I'd like to get a better feel for how something so Chaoitic can play out first.

Again, all this assuming I'm coming, still about 85% at this point.

I'm not confident, just convinced. LOL! As long as I play smart and don't get greedy (like a dwarf coach does sometimes), I'll do fine. My greed cost me the #1 spot in the Baltimore Bash in the bay back in Feb, and I had to settle for #2. I could have tied one game and went for a punishing win that ended up becoming a loss for me. The Tie would have given me enough points to win the tourney.

It actually looks like there are many dwarf teams already, so I don't know for sure what to do. The Chaos Dwarfs are my newest team I collected and I'm anxious to try them out. I used them on Games Day and they were frustrating, but fun.

Oh yes, and also on a side note for those travelling, I calculated that it will be about $50-$80 cheaper for me to actually drive up in my own car than taking the train from PA to Quebec. Also not to mention the timing, the time lost in taking multiple trains could be a bit of a mess.

I actually looked at renting something more economical than my Caddy, but I would spend more doing that than I would in the gas. So, things are looking more and more like I'll just take that route. Just gotta make sure I don't get lost. LOL.

Well other than the 7's match, I'm very confident! So bring it Rookie! Bring your Dwarves, Chaos Dwarves, Chaos or whatever team you plan on losing with !

Even Talons will beat you! Any USA player vs. Talons will result in a Canadian win! (not because Talons is better, but because even Talons can beat every American!)

Spazz it is true we played to a 2-2 in the opening round of Death-Bowl II . I however was playing on the 2nd Death-Bowl Final Table while you were stuck on the 3rd. table..... (& I still faired better than you) ......

Wait I faired better than you at both last years DB & your own tourney, (when you lost to "you know who")

So in closing, don't flame a war you will only get yourself burnt in Spazz!

To all Americans, BRING IT!

To Talons, its just you & I vs. the rest,..... but don't worry I have my puppet strings ready, & I know that you will do just as I say!

To the TBBF, imagion what the Americans A$$ looks like, cause thats all that you will see as far as standings go....

FINAL STANDINGS....

Clan-Skaven....

Talons...

The rest of the Canadians except Spazzfist & Garth, the rest of the TBBF!

Garth

Spazzfist

All the Americans

The rest of the TBBF!

& in last, that poor guy who does not even know what team to play..... well enjoy the wooden spoon, maybe you will know what team to play for the 2006 Death-Bowl!

Ah, someone else who's suffered the "wrath of the dice gods". This being a game that involves dice and all, I think we've all been there. The best of laid plans can falter at the simple tumble of a little cube.

Case in point: Our recent league in the AGBBL I had a dwarf runner with the ball in a TZ of a gobbo. All I had to do was blitz him (STR3 vs STR2) and I was in for the score. I rolled double-skulls. Even with the reroll, I double-skulled again.

Conversely, in the same league, I pulled off a crazy 2-turn score thanks to the dice. I had no runners (one died previously and one out with injury). One blitzer picked up the ball, completed a long bomb in 2 TZ's the other blitzer caught it. Then I had to blitz against 2 human blitzers (a die-down block), and I did it, made the go for it's and scored. Tying up the craziest game I ever played.

That being said, I still think the skaven should change their name to splat.

D) an over paniked tourney organiser(Quite a SPAZZ at that) is pestering me to speed up my game (despite the fact that 5 games are progressing far slower than mine) in the middle of the game...

@ steel thunder - I have played a few games of Deathbowl, and IMO speed tends to win out over brutality. Things get so crazy that what often ends up happening that in the mad scramble a ball will pop loose, be picked up by one player who will pass it to a faster player who will then run it in. It is really hard to muscle the ball in slowly, necause once you start getting close the other three teams are on you!

@Clan-Skaven - do you believe in karma? I hope not, because my thought is that you will face Garth in the Deathbowl and he is going to KICK YOUR A$$! That would be supreme payback for all your blabbermouthing against him. A good guy who doesn't deserve it!

The varied possibilities of the Death Bowl have me leaning towards the Chaos Dwarfs for a few reasons:
1) The team offers some pretty cool flexibility of players
2) It is the most recent team I've collected and have hardly seen any action yet.
3) My new models are not the "pointy-hats"...I used Chaos Dwarfs I customized from the Warhammer Storm of Chaos Hell Cannon crew.
4) I've played regular dwarfs so many times, and though I love them, I want to try something a little different.

The other team I'm considering is Humans, as they too have some good flexibility as well. The roster I would use would actually allow me to start with an Ogre and that could be a boon as well in this style of tournament.

I think regular dwarfs are more than tough enough, but as you mentioned Spazzfist, I think some speed is going to be required. I really like the Bull Centaurs, they are such cool players. The models suck, that's why I modified a pair of Centigors, they look much better with my team.
VBZ - Sep 08, 2005 - 09:00 PM
Post subject:
I'll tell you something strait off the bat:
1) The Ogre on the human team is more of a liability in the long run becaus his high cost robs you of an important third reroll, and because bonehead seems to come up at the worst of times.
2) humans can be extremely frustrasting to play if you are experiancing some "cold" dice roles-- they lack the uber positional players present in the other teams and have a hard time playing catch-up Bloodbowl.
SteelThunder - Sep 08, 2005 - 11:27 PM
Post subject:
The addition of the Ogre would come at the cost of a 3rd reroll, a lineman, and 2 FF. I'm looking at the possiblity of getting rolls and adding a skill to him with doubles.

Personally, I haven't played humans too much, and do prefer my dwarfs/Chaos Dwarfs to them. I've dealt with the bone-head stuff before. I started playing Blood Bowl when dwarfs could have an Ogre Big-Guy on the roster, and he really messed things up multiple times.

I seriously think that for me and my style of play, the Chaos Dwarfs will be the best option. The Bull Centaurs are pretty amazing, and I fell in love with them the first time I used them. The nice thing about that team is that I still get some dwarf blockers and added agility players with the Hobgobs.

I'm also looking forward to trying out the BB7's game, as I've never done that either. I'm currently making a board for it to try that out as well and see how fun that can be.

I'm hoping to do a trial run of a Deathbowl match to finalize my team selection. As far as ratz fouling, that's pretty standard isn't it? Although when I play my normal dwarfs I uphold dwarven honor (We don't foul unless fouled upon), with Chaos Dwarfs it is different, and I will gladly foul back.

You think I'm worried about 4 ratz left on the field against 10 or 11 players?

Sort of like math??? Dear God man, have you seen what the likes of Ian "Doubleskulls" Williams has done with calculating the probabilities of blocks for all the different variations of skills involved? Calculating the percentages and probabilities for every possible outcome? And don't get me started about my favourite resident of your fair city. That nameless coach who named himself after an undead team member (that began with a "z") (is that enough clues? Razz) could go on forever about which players were mathematically more suited for different roles on the field.

Blood Bowl is math. Math is Blood Bowl. Face facts man.

In my case the GNS would mean, God, Nurgle Sucks! I am sure that I will be yelling that at some point, cursing my choice to bring out the boys of pestilence.

But for certain the GNS for us would be "Got No Spoon" because we all know that you will be adding that to your collection KL! Laughing

I will be driving down from Brampton on Friday afternoon and leaving around 1- 2 pm.

Unfortuneately i won't be renting a van unless someone else wants to so i have only room for 4 people in the car (maybe 5).

So far i have confirmed that Paul will be driving up with me (please confirm Paul).

Please let me know if you are interested in driving up with us.

First come, first serve.

I will also be staying at La Siesta Hotel which is where we have stayed the last couple of years. It's a nice little motel which is close to the tournament location and is only $79.00 a night( includes breakfest).

I think i am rooming with Karllagerbottom (please confirm).

Found out from Talons the room is only booked for friday and saturday nights, I'm coming in on Thursday and staying until Monday so doesn't really work for me. Yes it's cheap for the coupld of days when sharing with everyone else, but much too espensive by myself for 2 days (and splitting between 8 or 7 shouldn't be that big of a difference, since it's only 2 days). We'll see what happens.
BTW, I had never confirmed that I was staying there, Talons just asked if I was interested and that there was 2 spots open (that's when I said I might be interested depending on how many nights it was booked, cost, etc), so please don't go flying off the handle. According to Talons there are others interested as well, so I'm sure you guys will get the 8 guys needed for the cheapest price).

The Axe will be mine and so will the TBBF!!!!!!!!

Bad News fellas. As of now I am not able to shuffle things around at work. Things got a little more complicated as a training schedule was posted whilst I was away on vacation. I have to see if I can do some very fancy trading to make sure the training at the Fire Academy is covered.

As of now, I'm OUT of the Deathbowl. Bummer! If by some miracle, things change, I will let you guys know. At least I have the dates for next year, I can make sure that's covered months in advance.

8 days left boys and girls. Time to get those brushes painting and those bribes counted. Remember I take cash only.

To update you all...

The new Death Bowl and 7's boards are complete. We won't be using the styrofaom DB doards this year. I have 10 new wood boards. They're much more durable and nicer to play on.

The trophies are all complete. We have first, second & third place. Best painted. Most TD's and Most CAS. Most sporting and of course everyones favorite the Wooden Spoon. The Wooden Spoon has been upgraded with a wall plaque so that the recipiant can display it at home in all it's glory.

The Axe has had extensive work done on it this year and is actually just about complete... finally. It's only been three years Razz Steve and Zombie will have their names on the axe this year.

Phantom field has been upgraded with padded lean bars. A comfort to Ben who saddly had to endure 4 long grueling games last year with hard wood lean rails Crying or Very sad

Carnage Colloseum (the new DB stadium) is still under construction. Shocked There's a big painting blitz planned for this weekend with VBZ myself and a few friends. Hopefully it'll get all painted then. In any case I'm comfident that stage one of the build will be done in time. Stage two will have to wait for next year. In any case stage one is the Stadium and bits you need to play. Stage two is mostly extra scenery.

The Blimp is ready to "fly" this year. It was present last year but never took to the air. I'll have her up and inflated this year.

I've rented three classrooms this year. I'm planning to split the group into two rooms if we're too large for the one room. The third room is the "lounge". The place to hang out after your games are over and between matches. I'm setting up a display area there with BB trophies and stuff. If anyone has anything they thing might be col to put on display bring it along. I've asked several TO's to bring along their trophies so hopefully we'll have a good collection of trophies on display.

Lastly the prizes. I've had little luck this year getting tourney support but what I have gotten is pretty good. There is a complete game to be won, a new Human team and another team which if I remember correctly is a dark elf team. There are two BB novels to be won, both of which have been signed by the author, one was also signed by JJ. Tom was kind enough to provibe me with a few Chaos figs. After that it's assorted figs and a poster.

Anyway that's about it. This is going to be a blast!

I'm guessing there must have been quite a few people who made that team that will have scored over 700 career goals at the NHL level.

Maybe that says more about the people selecting players for that team then for the future Hall of Famer.

Actually, its because Hull was a big underachiever early in his career and got cut from Team Canadas junior team. He was then offered a shot at Team USAs so he decided to pay for him.

And hey, I can give you a long list of star players in the NHL who got cut from the Junior teams over the years, some of them were actually playwing well when it happened.

The real threat from Toronto leaves at 1:30, as myself, Ben and Twist leave then.

That is only the final round.

Overall it was a FANTASTIC tournament, and I would like to once agin thank Brian for all of his efforts in putting together by far the best Blood Bowl tournament I have seen.

We had all the rivalries of Canada vs. USA, Ontario vs Quebec, and eveyone aganst Clan-skaven. The competition was great, the competitors were fantastic, and overall the competitive spirit was good natured but intense!

Also, for those who missed it, missed the opportunity to see Clan-Skaven's sporting new haircut (from losing a bet at the last tourney), and the close competition for this tourney's "Hair Club". Alas, Clan-Skaven's head has another date with Talons' clippers at the next tourney they attend!

And that was onyl the tourney! I am not even going to get intot he night life there! Overall a great time! Sell whatever organs youy have to to attend next time Xtreme! Not a tourney to be missed!

EDIT - Can't believe that I forgot to mention the final board! Last year I was impressed with the volcano board, but this year's final table with the Deathbowl board was absolutely phenomanal! By far the most impressive board I have ever seen!

WOW what a fantastic weekend! The rivalries, the friendship and the backstabbing! Once again this year we saw Zombie at the Championship table Shocked Dispite the rest I have to give him credit for consistancy in the Death Bowl tournament. Ben sat at the Championship table for the third year in a Row! Unfortunatly he was once again unable to pull out a win.

Thanks for the praise Spazz. I'll get the pictures up of Rod's hair soon. It was definetly something not to be missed.

*******************

In a stunning upset local unknown Rene Roy has won the Death Bowl III championship. Playing Lizards he took the Death Bowl match into overtime to win the title. Second place was taken by the one and only Rob Fossey. Playing Necro's he beat Rene in an earlier match during the tournament. In fact he was pretty close to pulling out the win in the championship game but Rene got to it just before Rob. Taking the third place spot was Steve Lalancette. After a quick 2 turn score early in the Death Bowl match he was the early target of choice for blocks and fouls.

Complete tournament results will be posted shortly.

Thank you once again to everyone who attended the third annual Death Bowl!

Death Bowl III was my one-year anniversary of playing this version of Blood Bowl. In between, I have played in four other tournament, and Brian's tourney are consistently the best (Craig, Rob F., yours are a *very* close second place!)

Brain - what can I say? You really know how to put on a good one.

Billy - thanks for letting me stay Saturday night. Once you are back in her good books, thank your lovely wife for being such a good hostess.

Jim (Old Man Monkey) - you're the man! It was a real pleasure meeting (and partying) with you! I am looking forward to next time. And its MY treat next time you are up here in the Great White North. If I can make it down to Florida, I will be sure to give you a ring...

Rod - nice hair! You are always a good sport. But you and your *homies* from the Falls should have come out with us Saturday night...

Glenn and Rob K. -- we will have to get together in Ottawa some time.

Colin, Leathan, and Little Steve -- nice to see some 'local' boys at the tourney, besides me! Steve, take care of my spoon!

Paul, Rob F., Ken, Cam, Rob O., Ben, Old Man Monkey (of course), and anyone else I missed (sorry!), YOU GUYS ROCK! I still didn't get to tell you guys about all of the fun you missed at the Pub after you left...!

A good time was had by all!

For my own interest I added the wins and subtracted the losses of each team to come up with the following stats. Someone suggested that I post them here, so here it is for anyone who cares.

The number in the brackets indicates how many players were representing this team at the Deathbowl, the +/- is their overall score of wins and losses of all coaches.

Lizardman (2) +4
Dwarf (5) +4
Norse (1) +3
Skaven (4) +3
Chaos Dwarf (3) +2
Nurgle's Rotters (me!) +1
Pro Elf (2) +0
Wood Elf (2) +0
Necro (4) -2
Orcs (3) -3
Humans (2) -4
Ogre (3) -8

There you have it! Enjoy!

Yeah that running tally was interesting to see all weekend. I was surprised to see the Ogres do so badly. Of course it didn't help them that in the 7's round, the one round where they had a distinct advantage, two of the ogre teams faced each other.

To add a few more stats and stir the pot a little more...

Team USA seems to have had a slight edge on Team Canada.

Out of 30 matches played,

Team USA won 15
Team Canada won 11
There were 4 ties

But since I'm completely biased I'll count those 4 ties as wins for Canada and call the whole thing a tie Mr. Green

I don't know though. That's three years in a row that the title stays in Montreal. This year kept in town by our Blind Squirrel Laughing

I can tell you one thing though. There was little chance Zombie was going to get the title. Rene isn't into the whole Can-US rivalry thing and he would have helped Mel win rather than see it go to Zombie. Ok it's time for a little post Death Bowl survey. What were the things you like the most? Where do you think improvement can be made? I'm perticularly interested in what people thought of the new 7's - Death Bowl boards. Were they better to play in than the Styrofoam boards? Did the black and red table cloths make the tables more usable/comfortable? How was lunch? Was the selection of drinks too much? Too little? How was the venue? I know the weather sucked but there's little I can do about that Wink What did you think of the trophies? Did you like that the Death Bowl was a major?

Kick off table sucks! LRB 4.0 Kick off table is better for tourney play.

Kick off result should not win you the game.....it should just alter the drive.

Riot---> lose to many turns when we came to play bloodbowl. Plus there is more incentive to stall in tourney play with the value of wins. With injury time you always have a chance to get a turn back.
Get the Ref---> your version is probably better for tourney play.
Blitz---> 5+D6...why bother? you get to move most of your team and throw blocks on the line screwing the other team anyway. With LRB 4.0 offense can better plan for blitz + it's more equal. Bash teams still get to hit the line and elf teams can still get into back field.
Pitch Invasion---> too much of a game winner for one off tourney game. LRB 4.0 you will most likely get TD but not guaranteed win for the whole game.

+10 pts for championship game....unneeded. I understand that top 4 players are involved in the game but they are playing for the championship! plus only the player who wins at the 2nd table really has a chance to jump up and take 2nd or 3rd and even that would be very hard. Didn't even make a difference in this tourney.

Deathbowl and 7's boards were great and so were table cloths.

Lunch NICE!!!

water + drinks = Great!!! Really liked the 7up cranberry!

Trophies were very well done!

Drinks: A little diet soda would be cool. Maybe there was some?
Pizza: Maybe a third variety to choose from, but it was tasty and filling.
BB7's: Boards were great, tablecloths were cool, but I'm still in the abandon this BB7's thing camp.
Stadiums: Surprised OMFG! Beautiful!!! Way to put pressure on your fellow TO's Wink

yeah craig really did a number on me Smile

He got his first TD when my first roll the game was a double 1 on GFI with CD. Beastmen zoom zoom down field Smile

My Hobgob then fails catch for tying score at end of first half.

2nd Half we score and think we got a tie......which I think both of us would have been grateful for. Brian says play OT Smile

took advantage of my untimely failures like every coach should.

His beastmen were dodgy and mine cd's didn't like hitting him ( 3 Skull Skull )

Really intense game all the way through. I thought i had him stopped with my last blitz on the ball carrier........... Skull Skull = Beastman continues to run down field Smile My Hobgob makes a valiant attempt to stop him.....dodge, gfi, gfi to blitz.........FAIL Smile

and Team CANADA gets the win! Well played Craig!

Anyway... my first Deathbowl, wont be my last. From a tactical standpoint, the deathbowl was my worst game... very disappointed with myself. Sad OH well.. lots of room for improvement.

I'll make this to the point since im at work.

Things i would change;

1. less brake time in between games
2. move the bb7's to saturday as the last game. ( i dont mind playing four games in 1 day)
3. Sunday start at 9am

I think by lessening the brake time and adding the bb7's game on Saturday we would still be finsh by 7pm which is fine by me as the night life doesn't start until like 8 anyway.

By doing the above you get to sleep in an hour more on Sunday which is well needed when partying downtown.

It also gives you more time to play DB and enjoy it. By being rushed that last game with those 3m turns i was unable to cover Rene with a couple of more dwarves like i had planned to and things might have been different.

I would also like to be done at 5pm on Sunday not 8pm. That is just too late and is a big drag for people driving home that night.

Those are my thoughts and unless it's changed as i suggested, im not coming next year. jk Laughing

Have to agree with Mel, use the normal KO table and I'd change the whole roll for weather and keep it the whole game in the DB round, if you don't roll for KO, don't bother rolling for weather, let the coaches determine the outcome of the game not a bad weather roll.
Trophies rocked!
I'd agree with Ben, start at 9:00 on Sunday (and make that a firm time, I never bought the whole, "if I made the start time 9:00 everyone would get there at 10:00", most of us were there on time, just make the late pereson either count his match as a forfiet or some other penalty if that seems too harsh). Making the first Sunday game a normal BB game then lunch followed by the DB round would be great.

Hey Brian

I thought the Deathbowl tourney is the best so far. Every tourney organizer will be calling you for advice. The top table was unbelievable, as was the volcano from last year. This was my first deathbowl and it definitely will not be my last. The food was great and the whole experience was terrific. I agree with Ben that the BB 7's game should be moved to Saturday. The drive back to Toronto on Sunday was a killer. It would help the drunken fools a little as well. PARTY ON GARTH!!!!!!!! KEN, practice makes perfect!!!!!

Wink Ben you only had 3 minute turns in OT. You guy's had been playing for almost 6 hours at that point. Time to speed up the game. I got the comment from a couple people that the whole DB round should have been with a three minute timer because it made it more intense.

The time issue is always a tricky one. Not just at the DB but at any tournament. I don't remember getting home before 2am after Q'ermitt Wink

How long is too short or too long for a round of Blood Bowl? IMO 2 hours is too short. The majority of games will get called on time. 3 hours, break included is just about right. You need a break between games, if only to stretch your legs. The DB round needs 6 hours of time minimum, that's without a break Shocked . Even if we start that round at noon it will not be finished before 6pm at the earliest. Even if we run late on Saturday, if we start at 9 on Sunday we can't be finished before 7 PM. This year we finished about 8pm and that was only because some people showed up late Sunday morning. I'm open to suggestions but there are few of things that have to work.

-There must be 5 rounds before the DB round. 4 rounds is not enough to sort out the top players.

-Social activity Saturday night must not be curtailed. Running a 4th Game Saturday means we will not be out of there before 8pm probably 9pm and I and my crew won't be out of there till later than that.

-3 hours per round, break included. If we did 2 hours per round there would have only been one game that would have finished in round 1.

The strict 3m rule in OT worked great in the Ratfest. We were snapping right along. A strict 4m in regulation would be good, maybe for all rounds not just the finals, to keep us on schedule.

Definitely need a break between games to shake out the legs and fluff up the brain cells.

Cheers,
Maureen

I think if you put everyone on a timer it'd keep the whole tourney on schedule. plus it'd point out to some players how long they really do take.

Way to go Brian,
Another sweet time in Montreal.
I found the weekend to be very well organized and felt that the games moved along nicely. I do however agree that the turns should be timed, just to keep everyone on track.

As far as the kick off table some things should change for the BB7's round, like Riot and Throw a Rock, maybe in 7's the result should only stun instead of injury. Stunned in 7's is big your out for 2 turns out of 6. Out of the game with only 7-10 players is harsh.

Who am i kidding i had a great time and will be back again, even if nothing is changed.

P.S Sorry to BB_Babe for one of the nastiest alliances i have ever seen in DeathBowl you surely would have won if not for Clan-Skaven's evil genius. 3 skaven vs. Necro it really was RatFest.

Factored into my score was a knock-down blow-out win against the Elves, the 3 losses were all held close, and the maximum painting points.

The scoring system used didn't penalise close losses any more then a draw. This helps more people stay in the running. So the four of us were essentially 2-4-x, plus the various fudge factors. We went into the Deathbowl round as the middle-of the [rat] pack table, and with our historic 4-way, 8-goal tie, kept it that way. (You rat traitor!)

I repeated this performance at the ArisiaBowl, at least I'm consistant at bashing elves and fighting tooth and claw to keep it close against the bashier teams -- I'm working now on more consistant tactics to take the ball away from the ard teams.

Yeah. 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, and 0 points for a loss. TDs, casualties, and all that other GARBAGE should be used for tie breakers only.

Of course, I have been saying that for as long as I have been a NAF member, but who listens to me anyway...

Did you say something Garth Wink

The DB points system is deliberatly slanted towards keeping people in the running rather than getting dumped by one bad game. The key difference comes in how well you win your games or how baly you lose. A one TD loss gets you the same points as a tie. That's why you ranked lower Rod. You didn't have as many big wins.
