Painting - Tell me what you think...

Post subject: Tell me what you think...
These are some pictures of my 2nd Edition Skaven -- I've been working on them for years, and they're my crowning jewel in my collection. Please let me know what you think, and if you'd like to see more pictures of the rest of them:

I've got a bunch more pictures of the rest of the team, including some conversions I've done, but I still need to crop out the background. The colors are a *little* brighter than the minis, due to the flash, but it's pretty close -- the whole team is pretty brightly colored.

Note that I painted the tops of the bases flat black, which improves contract and visibility on the field, and colored the sides of them according to the old 2nd Ed "color rings" to show position. It helps my opponents, many of them who haven't seen the older minis, to be able to say "Yellow bases are Gutter Runners, red bases are Storm Vermin, white bases are Throwers."

Nice..I've got a full set of 2e Skaven that I keep meaning to get around to painting sometime. Did a Thrower in Underworld Creepers colours for the TBB painting contest we had a while back. Eventually I'm gonna do enough Gobbos to fill out the roster, so they'll be 'dual' purpose. Be cool to have a tourney ready 2e skaven team.

Very nice. Good color scheme, and I have always liked the color coded rings to identify positions. My favorite figure is the 2ed skaven thrower. That helmet rocks.

Post subject: Cropping?
Why did you crop out the background?

I find it very hard to see the detail when such has been done.

Cheers, Good work!

Sweeeet! I might steal the colour scheme of your 2nd thrower's ball... Twisted Evil By the way, why is the Rat Ogre's base green on top?

I like them, especially the coloured base rings, but I personally think a mini that isn't based just looks unfinished. Your painting & scheme are very good though

send me any pictures you like, I always like nice painted minis (to steal the colour schemes Wink )

Why, that's our mascot! (Actually, I was originally going to attach a cape to him and make him a Stunty Gutter Runner, but then we erratta'd that combo out of existence.)

I cropped the background out because it was my dining room table, not exactly the kind of thing to put fear in your opponents. These smaller images were designed to show up as player pictures for my website, which is another reason why they've been outlined some and had the background removed (so they'd fit better with the site.)

I do need to work on the bases, but I'm not especially good with bases, and I'm hesitant to risk screwing up the paint jobs I've done already. The Rat Ogre needs to be rebased, preferably on one of the new large round bases.

These are great! I too use second edition figures. I have a complete team of elves using second edition figs, and most of my dwarf team is made from the plastic dwarves from the old Krunch game I picked up at a yard sale years ago. To differtiate the players on my team to fit with 3E rules, I added horns to most of them to make them long beards, left two without horns as runners, and bought some WHFB longbeards with axes to convirt into blitzers and a WHFB troll slayer. It all worked out rather well, I think. Smile Of course, my painting job isn't anywhere near this good, but I likes 'em.

For all those upset with the lack of backgrounds, here are a couple minis straight from the original photos. All I've done with these is crop and resize a little -- no contrast changes or editing whatsoever.

hey...you know how you've painted colours on the bases, asuming colours for positions i was thinking of doing that to my were team...as they all look familiar in position and would be helpful to your opponent as i feel a bit cheesy not letting your opponent know the score realy...what you all think? Laughing
hope that makes sence...

back in the second edition there were coloured rings for the different posistions, nice if you want to do it but i prefer to base all mine the same and put a green ring around them

Unclean blasphemer! Wink Correctly colored bases are what seperates us from the animals!

If I remember 2nd Ed, Catchers were Yellow, Throwers were White, Blitzers were Red, Blockers were Blue, and Linemen were just grey.

But wait! Are Witch Elves Catchers? How about a Trollslayer? They're not blitzers, but they are certainly not catchers or regular blockers. What base ring category do these poor players fall under? Exclamation

One of our diehard league members (who's also an NAF member, come to think of it); paints his Witch Elves with Purple bases.

That problem would never have occured if it wasnt for GW´s dammned mix of BB-world with Warhammer world.

I mark trollslayers as blockers and Witchelves as catchers, but thats just my take on it.
As a sidenote i use black bases for kickers.

Then they will still better, you don't need base rings to tell hobgoblins from chaos dwarfs to bull centaurs. If you do then well I really can't comment.
Deathwing - Feb 23, 2003 - 07:23 AM
Post subject:
Base rings existed in the first place simply so you could differenciate position players when the teams in the box were comprised of identical figures.
Although one of 'zon blitzers is fairly similar to one of the linewomen, you can easily see which position players are which in the vast majority of cases (with the 'zons, I'm colour coding the feathers).
I always wonder how on earth people who require obvious visual aids to tell positions apart manage to ascertain/remember which players have which skills... Wink

Purple was the base ring colour for mutants if I recall correctly.
Also, orange was used for runners (again IIRC).

So I guess purple could be considered "Special", which would include your not easily categorised player types such as witch elves.

Oh, and by the way: great work Milo!

Simple basing does look to be needed mate - detracts from an otherwise bootiful paintjob.

Simplest I know is a flocking gel (it is spelt correctly ya maroon) from a company called Renaissance Ink in the USA. Apply their medium grade gel using water, let it dry and paint it goblin green then highlight with w gobbo:yellow mix - looks just like the game board and is as hard as hell - you would break the base before chipping this stuff if you did it right. I use numbers for position identiication, however I thing the base color would be much faster for someone else to reconize.
1 = Rat Ogre
11, 12 = Thrower
31-34 = Gutter Runner
41-52 = Linerat
71,72 = Storm Vermin

Ok I have to ask this Smile I'm almost possitive I'm just missing somethjing with the colored bases, but What are the different colors for? <ducks flames> I haven't played an actual face to face game for quite a while and so I don't know exactly what they stand for. Is it just a way to keep track of certain player types or is there a color coding system?
Deathwing - Sep 11, 2003 - 05:22 PM
Post subject:
It harks back to second edition days. The 2e box set had two teams of identical figures, and they had colour coded rings around the base to differenciate between the positions.
Red=Blitzer
White=Thrower
Yellow=Catcher
Green=Blocker
Grey (plain)=Lineman

Some people still like to use them, and indeed they're not a bad idea if you're running a converted team or something where the positions aren't readily identifiable to your opponent.

Why would anyone want to spend time and attention to painting a fig only to ruin the damn thing by putting a coloured base on it. When your average joe has dipped his fig in a pot of paint and then chucked a few colours at it then coloured rings might be necessary to distinguish what the blob is meant to be. There are other more subtle ways to identifying a fig but if you can't work it out for yourselfs then your probably in the blobbers painting class. (no offence Milo, cos you r not.)
