House Rules - Modified injury rolls of 10+ are only badly hurt?

Hi,

quick question, what does anyone think of a rule some of the lads want in our league.

If a player is injured and the injury roll is less than ten but because of a modifier it reaches 10+, the player is only badly hurt and no further roll is made.

The roll for type of injury is still made if a 'natural' 10/11/12 is rolled.

Is this particularly soft, or is it a good way to stop too many nasty injuries?

keen to know what people think

You want these rules when your uber-player is put to the boots, but when you are fouling the S6 mummy with block and dodge, then you want him to die as quickly as possible.

I say let the rules be as they are. They have been modfied already to reduce injuries, methinks that is enough.

I say these guys should try taking dirty players and mighty blow so they can see what its like to kill your opponents best player on a die roll of 8 followed by the 6.

I take it you are still using 3rd ed? I prefer the LRB 4.0 or PBBL rules (available for free download from the GW site - http://www.specialist-games.com/bloodbowl/default.asp)

LRB 4.0 (and earlier) uses Sigurds - i.e. for every "casualty" roll a D6, 1-3 Badly Hurt, 4-5 Seriously Injured, 6 Dead.

PBBL compresses it further so for each casualty roll D6
1-3 Badly Hurt
4 Miss Next Game
5 Roll D8 1-2 Niggle, 3-4 -MA, 5-6 -AV, 7 -AG, 8 -ST
6 Dead

Well, the Sigurd's roll of a d6 for casualties (1-3 BH, 4-5 MNG, 6 Dead) in current LRB rules is designed to keep the ratio of casualties equal to the ratio when the roll is unmodified. Maybe institute the Sigurd's roll ONLY for those casualties with a modifier (Mighty Blow, Stunty, whatever...) in place of rolling a d6 for each casualty, and the guys might better understand why it's being done in the first place. Fluff-wise, why are the guys who hit harder (or boot more accurately) killing or injuring players less frequently (as a % of CAS) than the lineman or even a gobbo? That's what the Sigurd's roll is intended to fix.

The "natural roll" rule works OK in short term leagues, but after a couple of seasons, player turnover has been so low that, in my experience, a few players with extreme skill rolls and teams with better luck avoiding casualties take over the league, with little chance that they'll have to deal with any negative consequences of injury. This really raises the team rating at which teams plateau, deepening the gulf between established teams and any new teams introduced.

If the gang insists on the natural roll rule and you want to have a league of any real length, I'd recommend that you make the Aging rolls after each skill roll ramp up more quickly (2 at the 1st skill, 4- on 2nd as usual, then 6- on third, 8- on 4th, etc.) to create the player turnover that helps teams plateau at lower team ratings.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

I think the general consensus is its a bit soft and reduces player turnover which is also bad.

Doubleskulls, we are using LRB4, the 'roll' i was refering to was the D6 for BH/SI/dead, guess it wasn't clear. Also, I thought the PBBL injury table was D66 roll, but with essentially the same distribution you describe.

Shane, kinda like the idea of just using the D6 roll only for modified injuries, kinda cool cos if you roll twelve they are dead:)
Might confuse a few folks, though as not many in our league played 3rd ed so we'll see.

I am gonna use the poll data to convince the boys that we need lots of nasty injuries! And go find me some dirty players!!!

cheers

Ah - I did misunderstand the original post.

TBH I think the reduction in injuries would be a bit too much - but it depends on the sort of league you like. Lots of permanent injuries hurts the agile teams more than bashy ones, so if you think agile teams are too weak then go ahead and make your change.

I think your right it does all depend on your perspective, so we are not gonna use the rule and i'm running Dwarves Smile

cheers

joe

p.s. I was mistaken its d68 as you said for the injuries in the PBL doubleskulls, sorry Embarassed
