North America - The Challenge of Q'ermitt - Toronto tourney, Summer '06

Spazzfist - Jan 29, 2006 - 11:45 AM
Post subject: The Challenge of Q'ermitt - Toronto tourney, Summer '06
This is the second annual Challenge of Q'ermit, hosted by Hammers of the North.

In this tournament participating teams will have an opportunity to span the globe, as they are transported via the portals of the Old Ones, to play in Blood Bowl pitches all over the world to determine who is truly the mightiest.

Players will have the chance to play on eight of nine specially constucted boards which represent different geographical locations (e.g. desert, ice, goblin swamp stadium). Each pitch will have their own special rules (for weather, etc.) which will be included in the tournament package. The two players who advance to the finals will be playing in the temple of the mighty Slann, Q'ermitt, who (for reasons known only to him) is set to determine who is the mightiest Blood Bowl team in the world and bestow them with the mystical Plaque of Q'ermitt.

I am starting to make the plans for the Challenge of Q'ermitt 2006, and before I nail too many details, I want to get feedback form prospective atendees.

I am looking towards July for the date, but need to nail things down with the Oakville Battle Bunker where I plan to be hosting this event.

I would also really like to hear from the Ottawa, Montreal attendees as I would like to get feedback as to how I can make this tournament run so that I can get you home at a decent hour on Sunday!

I will probably also be running the Stunty Cup on the Saturday night as I did last year. I will post a separate thread for that one.

Any feedback from those who attended last year that can help me make this a bigger and better tourney I would love to hear from you.

Hope to see you there,

Spazz

Any plans on new boards Spazz? I've been tossing around the idea of making another pitch in my spare time and if you need something/had something in mind, I might be able to help you out.

For a Toronto guy, I say screw the bunker and hold it at Dueling Grounds, yea, it was a little cramped, but its right near some bars and a hotel down the road for the out of towners.

Also, a couple rules need to be cleared up for some of the pitches, but we can get to that later if you're just looking for logistical suggestions now.

Spazz-
My only suggestion pertains to The Stunty Cup, so please feel free to move this post to that thread when it is up. That said...I would change the format of the games from "First TD Wins"...this favors the person who wins the kick-off roll to too great of an extent.

Two suggestions for this are...

1. Turn this into a BB 7's tourney for the initial round(s). This will address the problem of having this "side" tourney from taking too much time and still give both teams an even playing filed.

OR

2. For something a bit different...why not forgo the Kick Off all together, as it is in the final game, and set up a neutral zone where the the ball will be placed to start the game. The first player to move will still have something of an advantage, but they will not always start the game with the ball...and are less likely to end the game in 3 turns.

Just my thjoughts.

Well if you check out the web site in my signature, there is an ongoing poll. Right now, skaven have a pretty commanding lead. I also would like to make the Mordheim pitch that was planned for last year by master sculptor Mike Cheney. But due to major illnesses across his family (including his own stroke) he was unable to complete it. But if you would like to help out that would be super!

I hear you, but I am still thinking that these would be better (and more comfortable) arrangements. Also not as far for me to go!

Fire away man. I know there were a couple of unclear things, and I would like to get those ironed out ASAP. One thing I am going to do away with is the death=lost skills as I had. A lot of people seemes to not like that very much.

Paul,

Do you have a fresh link for those Q'ermitt photos from last year? They were really good and would help people who have not been to get a sense of the custom boards.

Appreciate it.

P.S. KL, I have responded to your Stunty Cup queries in the new thread.

I've actually got a Skaven stadium back in Halifax and I'm planning on getting it moved up here, should be here by July. The field itself isn't anything fancy, just green turf with a big Skaven logo in the middle, some stands and dugouts (that I'm probably going to redo)

I'm also tossing around the idea of doing either an Orc or Dwarf field uphere. Nothing as elaborate as the Skaven field to start with since my apartment doesn't have much room for storage.

Yea, the death = lost skills thing kinda sucked. It didn't happen to me, but it would have sucked. I'll try to dig out the rulebook from last year and go through it. I know one thing that is confusing is for the final tables kick-off table. Theres one result where the skink healer brings back a player who was injured. It should be cleared up if this player can be put onto the field, or has gotta sit in the box until the next kickoff (this happened last year when me and Ben were playing in the Final) If the player can't go on the box, it doesn't seem like much of a kick off roll, as it has no effect on the game (while most do) but if he does go on the field, players strategies change, so you gotta clear up if you set up again.

I think we settled on a location on the sideline where he could enter play (my endzone, which is better than the box, but not where you want a troll slayer to be Smile) This should all be clarified in the rules I think.

Anyways, I'll dig up the rules and let you know if anything else is unclear. This was the only issue that came up last year that I was involved in.

Paul,

Thanks for the offer of the skaven stadium, if you want to bring it that would be great - and that offer is open to all! I want to make the tournament one that is totally played on custom-made boards. In the future I would like to be awarding prizes not only for best painted teams, but best pitch brought to the tourney.

I still plan on making my own pitch however, but first I need to think about how I am going with it. Whether one of the skaven clans or a sewer pitch or whatever. Need to get my mind around this one.

I will also go through the old rulebook and see what I can find. I know there were some other tweaks that needed doing. (And no Talons, there was nothing wrong with the tremors result for the Chaos Dwarf pitch, it is not my fault that you can't read! Wink)

As for my stadium, if I've got it up here, I'll bring it along if its possible (pretty big and its a long trip to Brampton from my place)

Touche. Yes, of course they will, I like that one, and would personally like to see more tournament adopt this system.

As for the stadium, thanks for that, and we will see what we can do about it closer to the time.

Would like to get some feedback here.

I am looking to book a space for the tourney and have narrowed it down toa couple of possibilities.

The first one is the same location that the Canadian Open will be at, so I guess once we all have a chance to see that one in a couple of weeks, we will be able give a more solid opinion on it.

The second one is in a recreation centre. The advantage of this one is that I will be able to obtain a liquor license for the room, should people be interested (yes Rod, I know your opinion already! Wink)

I guess my quesiton at this point is how many people would be interested enough in drinking while playing Blood Bowl to make it a priority?

I like the liquor license idea, go with that one. I didn't read the rest of your post, cause that idea wins.

Well it looks like the rec centre is right out. They refused to give me a daily rate and wanted to charge me $30 and change per hour for the room. No worries.

Inspired by Ben's location for the Canadian Open, I am actually looking at other hotel's in the Brampton area and am inquiring into their rooms. (Don't worry Paul, I will inquire about liquor licenses at these places too! Wink

I asked and they did say something about the restaurant, couldn't really undertsand what he was saying, but may have said something about setting a bar in the room as well. I am going tomorrow to check the space out, will find out more.

It will be on July 15th and 16th at the same location found by Ben for the Canadian Open.

Good to hear that you will be coming out Kolja, and happy to hear that there will be at least one chaos coach, as they are so poorly represented in tourneys.

I also wanted to make mention that there will be some slight rule alterations from last year's tourney due to some of the feedback that I had heard, and new ideas that have been presented.

Arrow Players on the goblin swamp pitch will not make penalty rolls for secret weapons.

Arrow Players who die through the tournament will be brought back to life with all of their skills in the next game

Arrow Rules for the Q'ermitt pitch will be revised

Arrow the gravestones on the graveyard pitch will be made smaller, as I was told they were too large, as so to block sightlines and to be knocked over during play.

Arrow Rob Pharand is still required to read all of the rules carefully and not blame me if he did not read something properly! Razz

those are the only ones which jump to mind right away. If people who attended last year have any suggestions to make, then please let me know

Never fear Grant, there will be a wooden spoon there. Nothing as large as the one at the Deathbowl, but I do not feel the need to compensate! Wink

Mind you, Lagerbottom has not said whether or not he might make it, you might have to wrestle that spoon out of his firm grip!

ANNOUNCEMENT -

In a continuing show of support for this tourney, Torpor has just informed me that he will be donating another prize to this year's Challenge of Q'ermitt.

Those of you who attended last year will remember that Torpor donated a lego dugout to the tourney complete with the Reserves, KO, and Injured boxes, turn and reroll counters and whole lot of special pieces that really gave the whole piece an excellent Blood Bowl feel.

Torpot has not told me what prize he will be dontaing for this year yet, but whatever it is I would like to offer my public acknowledgement and gratitude.

Okay, the date and place are booked!

I have booked the same room that was used for the Canadian Open which was at the Monte Carlo Inn, Brampton Suites. This is on Airport Road, just south of Highway#7.

The dates are July 22-23rd, which is the Saturday and Sunday.

Hope this helps some more people to decide on whether or not they can make it. But for those who did not make it out to the Canadian Open, let me tell you that Ben Tusim really found a GREAT location for a BB tournament, especially for those out of towners who can stay in the hotel above!

Hope to see you out there!

What would people think of a five game tourney - this way we can finish up in mid afternoon on Sunday and have everybody home at a decent hour.

My main objective with running the tourney is to satsify the wishes and needs of the attendees. Seeing as many people at last year's Q'ermitt came from quite a distance I would like to factor that into this year's event. Rather than start a separate poll thread, maybe people could answer me here. All thoughts are welcome - from both the local and distant attendees.

Well it definitely has to be a consideration for the Canadian tournaments with the people that we have travelling great distances in order to attend our fine tourneys! Very Happy

So what would that look like...

Day 1
9:00-10:00 Registration
10:00-12:00 - Game 1
12:00-1:00 - Lunch
1:00-3:00 - Game 2
3:00-3:30 - Break
3:30 - 5:30 - Game 3
5:30 - 6:30 - Supper
6:30 - 8:30 - Game 4
8:30 - 9:00 - Break
9:00-11:00 - Stunty Free For All
11:00-1:00 - Get hammered!

Day 2
9:00 - 9:30 - Get Organized
9:30 - 11:30 - Game 5
11:30 - 12:30 - Lunch
12:30 - 2:30 - Game 6
2:30 - 3:00 - Break
3:00 - 4:00 - Closing ceremonies

This will still get the Montreal boys home at about midnight. Not the ideal, but I think it is the best that can be expected.

the alternative is the five game schedule which means that we would be done at the same time, only that we would be getting on to the Stunty Free For All a couple of hours sooner.

Does someone see another way this can be done?

Okay, the room is completely booked now. Went today to sign for the credit card, etc. So there is no chance now that they can pull a "GW" on me and try to change my dates.

While I was there, one fo the staff was asking whether I would like to reserve a block of rooms for the tourney attendees. How about it? How many people are coming that would like to stay in the hotel? I know that even some of the TBBF boys like to get a room to save the driving back and forth.

I was thinking about holding a block of five rooms, or do you think more would be needed? I think they will hold up to ten for me, but then will let them go close to the date if nobody firms up.

Just get back to me if you are planning on making use of the hotel.

Hey man, there is nothing pumped up about the Nurgles! They are probably even worse off than the regular Chaos team. In fact the only thing that I think they have going for them is the Beast of Nurgle (S5 with tentacles!)

But bring on the chaos! Good to see them making tourney appearances. Kudos to the people who came up with the idea for mutations as regular skills and promoting our more morally challenged bretheren to the Blood Bowl pitch! Wink

B) Does this mean we gotta sing God Save the Queen before each match at the tournament?

Right now, this is how it stands:

Day 1
9:00-10:00 Registration
10:00-12:00 - Game 1
12:00-1:00 - Lunch
1:00-3:00 - Game 2
3:00-3:30 - Break
3:30 - 5:30 - Game 3
5:30 - 6:00 - Supper
6:00 - 8:00 - Game 4
8:00 - 8:30 - Break
8:30-10:30 - Stunty Free For All
10:30-1:00 - Get hammered!

Day 2
9:00 - 9:30 - Get Organized
9:30 - 11:30 - Game 5
11:30 - 12:30 - Lunch
12:30 - 2:30 - Game 6
2:30 - 3:00 - Break
3:00 - 4:00 - Closing ceremonies

I know it is going to be a long first day with the four games, but the only alternative is to have a five game tourney. From what I am hearing, people would rather play the six games and go longer on the first day.

Thoughts? If nobody questions this, then this will be the new schedule.

Thanks,

I have a suggestion...why not make the whole tourney 1st TD wins? Then you can squeeze even more games in.

Announcement

The Challenge of Q'ermitt will not be giving an award for Best Painted Team this year. I am going to try a different format which will be called "Best Team". The criteria for this award will be a combination of painting, conversions and theme of the team. To discuss this topic, please refer to the thread in the "Hosting Tournaments" section. Or you can also look for it on the TalkBloodbowl site.

It should also be noted that this year there will be another change in that all teams will be allowed to buy secret weapons.

Also be aware, that there will be no penalty rules called for secret weapons on the Goblin pitch! Twisted Evil

What are the allounances to teams for secret weapons? For instance Skaven are only allowed the poinsoned dagger, can skaven take any others?

Rod.
Spazzfist - Jun 08, 2006 - 05:56 PM

Here is a consise list of all weapons and races allowed:

Ball & Chain 20K, 8+ Goblin

Blunderbuss 30K 10+ Chaos Dwarf, Dwarf, Human, Skaven (Jezzail)

Chainsaw 60K 8+ Amazon, Chaos, Chaos Dwarf, Dark Elf, Dwarf, Goblin, Human, Norse, Orc, Skaven, Undead

Death Roller 90K 7+ Dwarf (Longbeards only)

Explosive Bomb 40K 8+ Chaos Dwarf, Dwarf, Goblin

Pogo Stick 20K 10+ Goblin

Poisoned Dagger 30K 10+ Amazon, Chaos, Dark Elf, Human, Lizardmen, Skaven

So to answer your question, the skaven will have the poison dagger but may also have the blunderbuss (jezzail) or chainsaw.

EDIT - please also note that if you are going to be bringing a player with a secret weapon you MUST have a model that appropriately represents it. Do not have a regular human lineman and then say on your roster that he has a chainsaw. The weapon must be modeled on!!

Sounds interesting Spazz, I'm going to start working on my roster soon. How, can any player take the secret weapon, or does it have to go to a lineman.

ie, could I give a gutter runner a chainsaw Smile

For anyone who is planning on pre-registering and would like a copy of the tourney rulebook then please PM me for details. The rulebook should be done at the end of this week.

On another note, I wantd to say for certainty that this year's Challenge of Q'ermitt will be having ten custom built boards supplied by me. Paul has suggested that he might be bringing a pitch out, and the MOBB might be bringing the Ivor Biggin Stadium out (but hopefully they give it the TLC it so desperately needs!) I can ask Glenn if he will bring his fantastic stadium out, but somehow I doubt that! (This thing has to be seen to be believed).

The boards I am supplying are:

Boat
Graveyard
Khemri
Halfling
Chaos Dwarf
Norse
Temple of Q'ermitt
Goblin
NEW - Orc pitch
NEW - Skaven sewer pitch

If you are going to bring out your own board, then LMK. I would eventually like to make this a tournament for people to showcase their custom boards.

Little more than a month!

It is going to be LRB 4.0. Don't expect me to be the pioneer who moves the tournament scene into the new rules system. I leave that for someone else! Now I know I'm not going this year anyway but I wouldn't be attending either if it were LRB5.0 nor will I be attending any 5.0 tournaments in the future. I can also venture to state that there would be no MTL coaches attending a 5.0 event. At least not from my group and I'm fairly certain Steve's group feels the same way.

Spazz-
In my opinion, you will have people who feel strongly about this from both sides of the fence...it won't do you any good to try to appease both. Make a decision on the tourney that you want to run, and go from there. It won't guarentee better attendence either way.

P.S. Besides...the only two votes against LRB5 are coming from people who weren't coming anyway. Changing to suite them might alienate those who were already committed to attending. (Then again it might not...just my 2 cents.)

Rob,

I appreciate what you are saying and can understand that as the old sasying goes "you cannot please all of the people all of the time".

However, Rod is coming to my tournament, and Brian has expressed his disappointment at not being able to come, but I can probably count on his support in the future. As far as some of the other attendees ( alot of whom are TBBF) I do not picture any of them having anything more than a lukewarm support for LRB 5.0 rules (correct me if I'm wrong guys!)

Push come to shove I will have to evaluate the ruleset decision based upon:

1) Number of coaches who would or would not attend

2) Who those coaches are. Because let's face it, I am not going to alienate my friends just to get a couple more people at the tourney.

Honestly I"m not a huge fan of LRB 5 from what I've read (along time ago) and heard, I don't see the need for it as LRB 4 works ok in my books. But if you're going to run a tournament with LRB 5 rules, I wouldn't not go just because of that.

Maybe someone should plan an over-priced, poorly planned event in MTL in September...then perhaps your turnout will be negatively impacted as well.

At least our attendees got something for their money.

Maybe YOU should get over YOURSELF and refund the money you charged for your half-baked team tourney. Once the World Cup was announced, you dropped off of the face of the earth for the NA Cup...and it showed.

EDIT: I am not insulting Brian's website. I am also not going to get drwan further into having to defend myself. Brian is clearly in one court...and that is fine...I am just saying that there are alternate opinions that should be considered. He apparently does not seem to think that there is anything worthwhile outside of LRB 4...and that's fine too...it's his opinion. I just doesn't mean it's gospel.

EDIT2: I am really bothered by this...where have I bashed Brian's website. Seriously...Brian you are the one taking cheap shots. This is really uncool especiall when you consider that as a NAF Staff Member...I am one of the people that you are supposed to support....not tear down.

I'm glad you find that funny Brian...you won't see me at your tourney anytime soon...and I will have to reconsider my mebership to NAF if their staffers are allowed to have your attitude toward members.

Oh and one other thing...why should I look into my back yard concerning the NWC? That was your baby and frankly, it was no big deal for a free tourney. For $30 it was a joke. Now, the Death Bowl is alot of fun, and had you put the attention into the NWC that you do into Death Bowl...then it would have been good stuff. If you didin't have the time or inclination to put forth the effort...then don't run a 2nd tourney.

I have to say that your efforts toward the NWC don't bode well for the World Cup. Hopefully, there will be a joint effort from Europe so it has a chance at being worth the money to go.

I did see the NWC----not even a name the attendees wanted from what I polled---as brian's event.

I do wonder where the $30/person went for what was done--location free, $10 to "World Cup Fund" (USA subsidizing Canada here), recycled prizes, no trophies+ food--maybe $10/person for the 2 days.

As for local turnout, the local teams brought a team a piece. We weren't told to bring 2 teams so each only brought one, having someone drive 2+ hours for a CHANCE to play would've been stupid. So the area supplied 3 teams which what was expected, there were some extras---but not anything I would've counted on.

As tourney Organzier for the event Brian, I agree with Rob that your interest level changed with the World Cup Event. You didn't even mail out the rulebooks like you said you would. Personally I feel unless a player attended the NA cup, a player shouldn't be entitled to any money raised for the event. If you're not willing to support a tourney on our own turf, why should those who did subsidize you?

As for Q'ermitt, I wouldn't come to a 5.0 event, but looks like school is going to lock me outta it anyway.

Rob, you tell Montreal to get over themselves or that Steve & Brian are the spokesmen for Quebec, well if you want to hit below the belt (as you so like to say to me) by bringinging Provincial Politics into a normal debate, when all the two were saying is from "thier" two BB groups that none would come down for a 5.0 tourney! Brian never refered to the whole Province as you so sarcasticly indicated! But since you like to so called "hit below the belt" as you so called like to call it, I'll do the same right back.... "oh but wait that would make me an American...."

(Sound offensive? Well maybe leave my country's politics out of your debates!)

Oh & Ken, theres no smilies here cause i'm not smiling!

P.S. If the reason why you are upset is because I was bashing the Spike!...then perhaps you should have responded to those comments.

I guess I also might as well appologize for bashing GW's excuse for a Major. I wouldn't have cared who won that. Seriously...Two one-day tournements in one weekend? If that's not a smack in the face from GW...then I don't know what it is. Sorry Talons if your Niagra Falls Pal won it and you want to share in the glory of the victory. The Spike has been a Sham for 2 years. Direct your angst toward GW.

EDIT: One other thing Rob...I don't take my identity from being from Philadelphia, so feel free to insult Philly...or even America for that matter. I am not political in the least so have fun if it makes you feel better.

well said Ben,

lets keep this to the Challenge of Q'Ermitt topic. If you want to bash that tournament, do so here, if you guys want to bash another tournament (Spike, NWC, etc) there are threads around for those tournaments where you can take it there.

I think this was all touched off with a LRB4 vs LRB5 "debate." To me, it doesn't matter what you use Spazz, I'm planning to go to the tournament either way. (Hell, you can make it a 30 round tournament, where each game is decided by a die roll at the start, I"ll probably go anyways)

But I have six kids at home, and am working to get them all BB primed so that we can sweep the tourney circuit and take all the prizes home to one house! 'Cuz with me as their coach how can we lose? Wink

I like having the 2 skills before the first game - standard skills.

There will be one roll after each round.

I think that I will allow stacking after rounds 3 and 5.

<keep in mind that one roll will be made in between rounds. This will be made by me and will apply to all teams for their skill progression>

There is some touch up to be done to the image, and the dice are to be an orange colour, not the dark red that is shown in the picture. But it gives you an idea.

I am having 50 made up, so these will be given out to the first 25 people that show up (assuming that I even have that many)

Big thanks to Xtreme for pointing out Chessex, it is a great site for making the custom dice!

For any of you who were at the Canadian Open, you will remember that there was a table over to one side that was not in use for the gaming. I will set this table aside as a table for people to keep any models that they wish to trade/sell. so if you have anything that you are looking to unload, then bring it in! Glenn even told me that he has added lights to it now and is "almost done".

Having lived in Brampton since I was born is what is wrong. I have seen it go from bad to worse. I remember a time that Bovaird was the limit of civilisation, now you have to go deep into Caledon to find peace. And now the proliferation of Middle Income Suburban gansters who all have different 'colours' but hang out together Confused . But I should stop before I go real nuts on the subject.

Here are some images of the new field:

Wood elves and Vampires line up to do battle on the field of Blood Bowl.

The Jumb-Orc-Tron screen captures the action of the game (and can unfortunately distract the players somewhat!)

The AnOrkIsts get the fans into a fevered pitch (and also keep track of the games' turns).

The Orca-Cola Arena is highly sponsored by many fine products and companies!

Above each team dugout is displays of corporate sponsorship (and a nifty place to keep track of rerolls)

Ok since it appears that I'm the most annoying North American NAF member (whatever!!!! Laughing ) I'm going to put up this challenge!

To my understanding there will be a bar close bye the playing area.....

My challenge is we (my opponent & I split a picture of beer & have 2 glasses....

Only drink a glass o beer if you roll a double skull (or any turnover)....

at end of game whatever is left in picture gets split.....

Any takers?

Well as it happens I am doing the 4 and 2 format to allow for people to get out of there early (are you listening to this Brian?! Wink) So the last game finishes at 2:30. If you need to be on the road by 3:00, then I can try to make sure that that happens, and then we can just mail you the wooden spoon! Razz

Announcement

The Challenge of Q'ermitt will now be hosting the 1st annual "Geek Seek". There will be a list of twenty questions which will range from the simple to the moderate to the bloody difficult! A prize will be awarded to the one who answers the most questions correctly (or the one who does so first in the case of ties).

I will be distributing the sheets at the beginning of the tourney, once all games have begun. Sheets may be handed in at any time after that.

Spazz

EDIT - Just for the record- the Geek Seek will be just for fun, and not count towards the overall tournament score (as I know that this is done in some other tourneys)

2nd EDIT - The Geek Seek will actually be only ten questions. That way it fits nicely onto one sheet of paper. If people want to do one for each day then I can have the second page for the second day (this is providing that I have time to mark the sheets (i.e. I am not playing in the tourney). Otherwise I will save the questions for another tourney.

One more thing!

I am looking for an odd man out for the tournament, if anyone local is interested. Basically what this means is that I do not want to have to play in my own tournament, but if I have an odd number of people I may be forced to.

If anyone is willing to play in the tourney only if there are an odd number of people then I will allow you to play for free, and regardless of whether or not you play you will get a swell consolation prize. Keep in mind, that if I do have an even number of people that you will not play.

Ben is going to talk to his brother, so he has first say, but if there is anyone else who would be interested, please let me know.

no, we didn't go back in time. The Finals was Paul vs Ben with Ben winning again.

Great tournament Spazz, lots of fun. I wish more of the TBBF guys could have showed up for it.

Final Standings were:

1) Ben Tusim
2) Paul Connors
3) Glenn Jones

Repeat of last year for me 4-1-1, with the loss and tie to Ben. Had a great time.

Yeah, it was dwarves vs dwarves for the final, and humans vs humans for the spoon!

Ha! How did you know?!? Smile

I beat Eric R. 3-1 in a game where Eric had several key rolls go against him. To put it in perspective, I caused 4 casualties against him, but none the other way. Let it be known that I, going into the game, had the LEAST points.

But I don't even think that I was second last (after the 'spoon' game) -- Craig, what place was I?

Great tourney, despite the lack of commitment of locals (TBBF) Rolling Eyes

tried Orcs for the 1st time & went W2-T-0 L-4

Not the greatest record, but had some very close nail biter games.... will be giving Orcs another go for sure!

My TD's were 7/10 (-3) , CAS were 14/3 (+11)

Game # 1 defeated Lizards 3-1
Game # 2 lost to Dwarves 0-1
Game #3 defeated Humans 3-1
Game #4 lost to Dwarves 0-3
Game #5 lost to Humans 1-2
Game #6 lost to Necromatic 0-2

My Slann Jose Skinks did win the Stunty Cup! Laughing (Not sure how I did win, since I was talking in slured speach most game from being hammered!
The BEER was flowing , & I was bombed !!!! I don't quite remember much of the actual Stunty Cup match at all Laughing )

Don't forget that on one drive you got to set up 12 players to my 9, and by the end of the drive I think it was 12 players to 6.

Despite losing I am proud of the one 'fancy' TD I did conplete in the game. Though after that any attempt of doing ANYTHING within 3 spaces of the endzone was nixed.

Great time though, and it was a pleasure meating people from around the province.

What about the MOBB? Why is no-one giving them a hard time? They were all fire and brimstone when they were talking about how they were going to teach Talons (a much needed) lesson in how to play Blood Bowl! Wink

Have they no honour? Did they not want to heal their wounded pride? Smile

- on a more serious note - the turnout was disappointing. Especially when there are two local clubs. But kudos to the people who did come! You were an awesome group!

But I would like to know what kept people away? Was it the summer? If so, then I will gladly change the schedule. Or maybe it was Rod? Because I will gladly ban him if that is the case! Very Happy

People just have way too much stuff to do in the summer.

I'm just glad it rained all weekend cause i would have felt guilty it was warm and sunny out like it was supposed to be.

Oh i would be playing in this one. I really would like to make this tournament a very casual setting.

We order pizza, wings, and beer and just play Bloodbowl for 2 days.

If i was to have it, i may try something different, like we would actually keep track of star player points and only get skills on the players which earn the SPP's. Then we roll for the skills, just like you would in league play.

i think it would be fun and definately different for a tournament.

It's not that different. There IS a tournament in Canada that does this: MINE!!!!! (Carnage in the Capital for those of you who are uninformed)

However, with that many people and no 'full time' TO, you had better get honest and laid-back players so that there is no chance of people screwing with the skill points. Hard to track.

Anywho, shouldn't this be on another thread?!?

was refering to Ben as DB is probably out for me right now due to timing.

Death bowl is a slight maybe...it's right around when I leave so may not be possible---plus I don't like the Riot rule.....hate driving 10+ hours to lose 3 turns of a game to one dice roll and basically the game---which happened to me last DB.

How come Chris or Adam does not show up in the rankings?

Leave it to you to make problems, eh? Wink

I don't know what is up with them - but whatever it is, it is out of my hands. I entered them like I did everyone else, but where I entered the rankings their real names did not show up like everybody else's did. I am guessing that is why their rankings are not in yet.

Hey, thanks again for the 16-sided die! You're the man!

No problem at all, I already have one and we'll consider that your prize for wining the rubber match.

Oh and BTW, after you ragged on me all weekend about beating me 6-0 I check it out and it was only 4-0. Does not really change much, though my only solice it that I am still ranked higher than you Smile

Got the word from Brian - they need to log onto NAF and enter their real names. Once they do that, then they will show up. Otherwise it is out of my hands.

Well I try not to be too judgemental of people (except for mooching backstabbers Wink) but now that I have done the tourney results for mine and seen how easy it is to do, I really think that any of these TOs have little to no excuse for getting the results in within a week or two.

I added each teams record plus two point totals (1st one using a scoring system of 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie) & (2nd using 2 points for a win & 1 point for a tie)

Just seeing how this would affect standings (trying to experiment with alternate scoring systems.... )

Every since I have been a member of NAF, I have been rather outspoken about how much I dislike the scoring system used by tournaments. Scoring systems that give poiints for painting, casualties, sportsmanship, etc. are ridiculous, and borderline childish. If you want to assess those parts of the game/hobby, then use them towards special awards like Best Painted, Most Casualties, and Sportsmanship -- NOT towards the score that determines the champion (or rankings).

Even the "Keeping it Close" bonus is a bit silly, although it reminds me slightly of the Overtime Loss point in hockey...

Can you think of any other sport/game that uses such a system to determine a champion? Even chess tournaments (which famously use a Swiss-style system) don't. And YES, I DO know that BloodBowl is a game played with little men on fake fields, and not a real sport -- I have heard it all before.

Hey, why don't we start assigning points for other things: Best dressed coach, bonus points for Dwarf teams, most TDs in the last 4 turns of the second half, most casualties from blocks from players that have red gloves. These are all good ideas, right?

I *know* that I am not a good player, but I still had a 2-0-4 record, tied with 2 other people, but Rod's score was 29% higher than mine (and Dave's). Where is the reason in that. Don't get me wrong, Rod is a better player than me, and he did beat me, but we are STILL BOTH 2-0-4!

When I ranted about this before, I was told to "go and run my own tournament" -- so I did. And the scoring system Rod suggested above (3-1-0 points) works just fine.

Stop the sucky-baby cutsy-wootsy point system and make the GAME be about winning the game. All of that other stuff is extra.

Gentlemen, it was truly a pleasure to make your aquaintances. I had a fantastic time (even with my terrible record) Other than casualties you had terrible luck on the field. I ended up winning 2-1, but damn it, it was the luckiest game that I've ever had.

Fat Bast ard was dodging on 5+'s, rolling knock downs and picking up balls from 3 enemy tackle zones. He scored twice, once with 5 of my guys to 11 of Rods on the field. It was crazy.

Unfortunately that luck didn't carry to my other games. Wink

Double Kermits. Double 6's. Thats what was consistently thrown against my guys. Glenn rolled at least 9 of them against me for injuries during our game. Rod put out 3 of my guys for the game in the first turn!

But in the end I had the opportunity to play against some quality players and use some of the best looking boards out there.

I had a great time at my first tourny, and doubt that it will be the last.

Hmmm now you've got me thinking. Most td's in the last 4 turns of the second half by a lineman with pink gloves and a purple helmet has gotta be worth some points Laughing Wink

Not to hijack Craigs thread..... I say as I continue typing anyway Wink

You compared the points system to Chess. Chess is often taken rather seriously. I don't often hear about chess buddies hanging out and getting drunk after day one of a tournament. I don't believe all that other stuff is actually extra. It is what makes the game unique and interesting. If all I was concerned about was shoing up and winning games I'd be played a CCG like Magic, not BB. The tourney scene has not grown inspite of the lack of serious rankings and strict rules, it's grown because of it. Anyay this could get into a long drawn out discussion but at the end of the day it all comes down to this. Yes the 3 point system you use at Carnage in the Capitol works. There are a lot of systems that could work. It all comes down to what type of atmosphere we're looking to create with the system used. Do we want to be super serious win at all cost and screw my opponent or do we want to have a few laughs, a few good drinks and a few great games of Blood Bowl.

I am with Garth on this one. Ever since I started in tournaments I have never liked the scoring system. Especially when it is aspoused to be a Swiss System. Swiss System is supposed to based solely on win-loss record. The current system workes better for a Round Robin style of play with the largest accumilated points being the winner.

A good example of the oddity of this system is results of this tourny Adam (1-0-5) placed higher than both Dave and Garth (2-0-4). Why? Most likely having an Orc team that was able to 'keep it close' consistantly and causing alot more casulaties was the reason. I just feel that the system tends to benifit bashy and high scoring teams by giving them extra points.

Yes, this is a game and that is why I'll still attend tournies (even LRB5 tournies) but so is scrabble, monopoly, mah jong, cribbage, etc. which tend to use the Swiss System in their tournies.

Seriously Garth, Eric had been mentioning this to me and I will give it some serious looking into by the time Challenge of Q'ermitt III rolls around.

But if you want other TOs other than myself to start paying more attention to this I would suggest starting your own thread in the "Hosting Tournaments" section.
