Painting - Official 2008 Legacy Team: Necromantic! +last year's Undead

nyarlathotep - Feb 01, 2007 - 09:30 AM
Post subject: Official 2008 Legacy Team: Necromantic! +last year's Undead
It's March, 2008, and the the legacy team for 2008 is officially Necromantic.

Since we had low voter turnout for 2007, we are extending the team into 2008. Coaches who submitted a miniature in 2007 will be entered twice into the drawing for the team if they submit a miniature for the 2008 Legacy Team.

So it's time to start choosing players and numbers to paint! I'll edit this post with the up to date information on who and what.

Please, do not claim a miniature unless you are willing to have it in the mail to me by December 31, 2008.

Note: Due to popular demand, we're going to use Red, White, and Black as team colors. The Red should be a primary Red - Blood Red if you use GW paints.

Let's do Red numbers on Black backgrounds on the figures, but I'm not going to determine a flesh color unless you all force me to make a decision. Smile I liked the flag idea from last year too, so if you can reproduce a little flag from your country on the base, that would be cool. Let's do our NAF nickname and number, and the year on the base as well.

I've found a fairly nifty basing material, but it costs ten bucks a jar, and I don't feel right about forcing everyone to buy it. So, if you want to try it out, it's called Resin Sand Texture Gel, from Liquitex. I bought my jar at Michael's craft store, but it should be available in any art supply shop.

Otherwise, use your favorite basing material.

I'd like to have the bases look like muddy earth, so we will be painting the ground in a base color of Scorched Brown with a highlight of Graveyard Earth, and bright green static grass over a little over half of the base.

We will be using 2nd ed base colors, and the text on the bases should be Red on Black. The base colors are as follows:

gray - linemen -Zombies and Skellys - Codex Gray
red - blitzers - Wight - Scab Red
green - blockers - mummy/golem - Snot Green
yellow - catchers - Ghouls/werewolves - Golden Yellow

Me? I'll claim a Zombie Norseman. #13. Like last year.... Laughing

I'll snatch up a zombie as well - do we have to have numbers from 1-16?

I like the idea of a uniform base color for each type of mini - one color for zombies, etc... but I was unaware that there were base colors decided for the undead in 2nd Ed! Very Happy

That'd be the lineman color, whatever that is. Laughing I never played 2nd, so I didn't know about those until a year or so ago...

Pick any number you like. Just let me know so I we don't get duplicates.

Ah, so gray would be for linemen, white for throwers, red for blitzers, green for blockers, yellow for catchers.

I'll take #17 as my Zombie! (I can provide it myself...)

Excellent! I'd like to do a mummy. I think I'll have a go at converting a fig myself, so I won't need one of the two on offer. (Although I'll probably end up regretting it -- greenstuffing all those bandages will definitely be a pain in the *ss!) I'll take number 55.

personally I think that uniform team colors are a good idea, not so much on skin tones, those should be somewhat open.

red/white/black works well for me

what exactly are we doing for base colors?

      DarkDancer17 wrote:

gray - linemen -Zombies and Skellys
white - throwers - none
red - blitzers - Wight
green - blockers - mummy/golem if we get enough
yellow - catchers - Ghuols/werewolves??

is this right?

Do you all feel like that about team color?

Yeah, let's go with the 2nd edition base ring colors. Base text should be Red on Black, which should make it stand out.

I could use a break from painting wood elves anyway.

It would be useful to have a picture as a reference. Making the bases look like each other would go a long way for making the team as a whole look better.

I'm trying to keep the base colors kinda dark, and with the lettering being blood red on black I think there wouldn't be enough contrast between the lettering and the base...

I typically use graveyard earth to rim the figures in my WFB army and for a few other applications. I find it to be a good shadow for bleached bone/kommando khaki and a good highlight for some of the darker brown colors (i.e. scorched brown). As for a primary color for a base, I'm inclined to say it might be a bit too light. If the goal is a muddy earth base, I'm picturing a dark brown with a graveyard earth drybrush for highlights. Just my thoughts.

Hi Karl,

The only Vampire I would have for the team would be Count Luthor, but I don't think Star Players are really what we're looking for here. We do still need a Ghoul, though. I think we can start opening up the field for Necromantic Team additions soon, too, so if you're in the mood to paint a werewolf or golem we could let start that process.

There are always coaching staff/rerolls/score counters as painting options, too....

We don't have any figs donated from GW for this, so if you feel like painting something, look at the first post in this thread to see what positions we have filled and colors and so on. I update that thread daily (except for yesterday, 'cause I was at work for 16 hours).

So if you want to participate, choose a player and post here with the position and number.

As of right now, we could use some more Skeletons and Zombies, coaching staff (necromancer of some sort), cheerleaders, Assistant Coaches, rerolls and score counters. We've also agreed that we'll add the option of a Necromantic Team to the list as well, which will add 2 Werewolves and 2 Flesh Golems to the list. I want to have the final Ghoul claimed before we open that up, though....Which might have happened today, if Karl Lagerbottom wants it.

Well if that is the case...please count me in for a werewolf unless it's still too early for that. I was working on a cool (IMO) conversion for that and wouldn't mind sharing it with/for the Legacy Team.

That's cool, as long as you try to match colors with the rest of us.

I personally use Reaper Pro and Master series paints for the most part with a smattering of GW and artist acrylics thrown in for good measure. Reaper has some nice tables of color equivalencies on their webpage. I'm not sure if they equate enamels, though!

I used to use enamels for painting minis, but having kids meant I had to be careful with the solvents. Little hands move too fast!

Regarding the Accessory Team Figures, like the coaches, cheerleaders, etc:

I don't see a problem with allowing you guys to paint up to two figures if you want. But I think that if you want to paint an addtional figure, please make sure that you don't over-extend yourselves.

For the 2006 team, we had 20 or so painters lined up, but only 11 sent in miniatures, and many, including my own, were late.

I also don't think it's fair to give an additional draw to a painter who voluteers to paint two figs. If you want to paint two, great! but let's not get greedy. Smile This is as much for fun as to maybe get a unique team.

Is that acceptable for everyone?

Ok, it's March!

I've made a little bit of progress - I've cut off both arms and the face of my norseman. No conversion work yet, though.

I think Spazzfist asked for a sample of the resin texture gel. I bought a digital camera a few weeks ago; please forgive my inexperience with it. Here are some pictures of some sample bases:

The darker base is what we'll be painting, Scorched Brown with Graveyard Earth highlights. The lighter base is what I'm painting for a friend's Khemri team. I included it because I thought the contrast would show better. I was right about that. Smile

Anyway, the Resin Sand Texture Gel is a lot tougher than the sand/PVA glue I had been using before. That stuff flakes off if you brush your fingers against it. The texture gel stuff is extremely durable.

So how are your painting projects going?

Progress so far:

Acquired the mini I want to paint (standard wight 2, no conversions), glued it to the base and primed it. Should be done over the next two weeks.

I bought a box of WHFB skeletons to use, but recently I saw a fig from the Warmachine line that I like. Now I'm debating whether to get and paint it or go ahead with a conversion of the WHFB skelly. This would be my first big conversion and I'm not positive it would be a great fig for someone to get.

On a separate note, I also found that resin gel at a "local" art store for less then $8 a jar. After seeing your pics I may very well get some the next time I'm in South Bend.

I'll be there. I volunteered to be odd man out. So many people are coming it would be great to play, but free Impact stuff was hard to pass up. Altough I doudt I could hurt my NAF rating with my current 0-3-2 record. Very Happy

I REALLY need to work on painting my Orc team. It seems all the rest of the tourneys I want to go to want painted minis and I'm lucky to be half way done. Sometimes I wonder if I should just slap some paint on these and play. Then buy a second team I could take my time with and paint nice.

Yeah, we're using round bases. I didn't want to wreck a figure with an untested medium, so I used a couple 25 mm square bases I had lying around for examples.

Thanks for the comments!

It wasn't too hard to do the bandages. I used a plastic Warhammer zombie for the body (with some extra plastic between the legs and body to extend the height). I rolled out small lengths of greenstuff into "ropes" about 1-2mm across and 1-2 cm long. I wrapped these around the legs and arms and pressed into the middle of the ropes with a toothpick (the round kind with points at the ends) so that it squished out to the sides a bit. If the bandges looked too neat, I'd add one going the other direction to break it up.

It's important to use lots of water so that nothing sticks -- I was constantly dipping my toothpick and the GS into water before applying it.

So all in all not too difficult, just lots of fiddly little bits of GS! Actually this was an experiment to see how hard it would be to make my own mummies for a Khemri squad.

April update:

Well, I have just been staring at the norse zombie until today.

Today, I dug out my plastic zombie bits, found a couple arms and a face, and attached them.

I also used some Slater's 3mm Plasticard letters and numbers for "NAF 2007", and some Plastruct 2mm Plasticard letters for "Nyarlathotep" on the base. If I would have used the 3mm on everything, my alias would have taken the entire base!

I have to do some sculpting on the figure, add the Resin Sand Texture Gel to the base, and start painting.

I also have to start thinking about the other fig I promised for the project. Smile

Anyone else feel like sharing a status report?

Actually, no. If you want to join the legacy team, I think we'll be open to take new painters until September - if you can get it painted by the end of the year.

Take a look at the first post in this thread - I keep it updated with the latest information - and choose a figure that hasn't been done. Pretty much all of the positional figures are spoken for, but we could still use re-roll counters, coaches, cheerleaders, zombies, and skeletons. So if any of those spark your interest, post here with your choice and the number for the figure!

Hi Mark,

Unfortunately, our Mummies are already spoken for - unless we have someone drop out. We can always use more Zombies, and sideline staff, though!

If you have your heart set on painting a Mummy, PM one of the guys doing a Mummy and see if they're willing to cede the project to you, and post the result here. You can check the first post in this thread out for the names of the people involved in the project.

Here's the process Bean Dip.

1. Post here asking to be a part of the team Done!

2. Look at the first page of this thread and decide what you would like to paint. We mostly need Zombies & Skeletons, or if you're feeling creative, sideline staff and re-roll counters are welcome!

3. If you decide to paint a player, look at the numbers which have been chosen already in the first thread and pick a number for your player that has not been chosen yet.

4. Post here again with your choices.

5. Convert / Paint your entry. Try to stay in the guidelines of the 1st post in this thread for continuity.

6. Post here and I'll PM you my address.

7. Mail your entry to me by December 31, 2007.

8. Wait for me to post the winner, and if your name is drawn, wait for the team to arrive in the mail!

We have people from around the world painting; It shouldn't be a big deal to have someone from Oz joining. Very Happy

I had to repaint my elf team for the world cup. I'm hoping that painting 1 zombie should now fit into my busy and stressful life. Assuming that my pregnant wife doesn't have some silly expectation about me looking after her in her condition! Where do women get these silly ideas!?! Rolling Eyes

I will get it done. Weather I get it done by the deadline is the question. If I get it done on time I'm in. If I get it done late I'll mail it to the winner. It depends on how much time I have the next couple of weeks. I have enough time during X-mas break to finish it, but that is from Dec 27 until Jan 2. And I'd have to mail it from the UP. Mail from the UP is slower then from a foriegn country. I know it might as well be one. Laughing

Well I'm sorry guys and I know that it's not what you want to hear this late in the day, but I'm going to have to pull out of this years legacy team. Sad

With an unwell pregnant wife and a dip in the health of my father-in-law I ended up in Wales for Christmas and now don't have time to complete my mini. Especially when you add waking up this morning to find the felt roof being no longer attached to the top ov the shed (or any other part of the shed for that matter).

I hope you get a full team together and that it's as good as the previous ones have been.

Sorry to hear that Antipixi. Hope things pick up for you in the new year.

My apologies as well - I'm also not going to make the deadline. A six-month job-search is coming to a head right now. I have no spare time at all since I need to study French night and day to get the cushy job. (If I don't get it, I won't have enough time to paint minis ever again.... Sad )

It sucks because my fig is converted and partially painted. I should be able to finish it by end of January at the latest. I will send it directly to the winner. Obviously, I'd like my name removed from the drawing pool. (Actually I was going to ask to be taken out anyways since I don't get out to enough tournaments and a NAF legacy team should really go to someone who can show it off.)

Deflated, surely, but not dead.

We could field Xtreme's Zombiez team, (with an additional wight & ghoul)...

And a couple nice turn/score/reroll markers.

But I am pretty disappointed that even with a full 11 months to prepare, we still couldn't pull together a full team. Sad

But someone is getting this team. And it has an extremely limited edition Zlurpus Zembashski painted by the sculptor included.

Now I have to figure out how to determine who gets the team... Shocked

Just a thought for the Legacy Team 2008.

Go for halflings or deadlings. Half the size means only half a normal paintjob.
If it also halves the time it could get finished before the end of the year.

Nyarlathotep: Zombie #13 Received
DarkDancer: Zombie #17
Spazzfist: Zombie #4 Dropped Out
Lauth81: Wight #81 Received
Eggball: Mummy #55 Received'

Temujin71: Ghoul #71
Lychanthrope: Skeleton # 65 Received'
Antipixi: Zombie #83 Dropped Out
Misanthrope09: Mummy #09
Raider888: Wight #88 Received
Buggrit: Zombie #69
Rottweilerrme: Skeleton #15 Received
Rodders: Zombie #23
Sann0638: Ghoul #41 Recieved
Clan-Skaven: Ghoul #11

Karl Lagerbottom: Werewolf #8

Rune Master: Golem #66

ForceCommander : Golem #7
Crazylegs: Skeleton #5
Darkdancer: Werewolf #1
Mokopagan Zombie #21 Received
Lord Wriggly: Zombie #0.5 Received

Sideline Team Figures

Don Vito: Head Coach/Necromancer
Tojurub: Cheerleader
Lauth81: Turnmarker Received
Nyarlathotep: Re-roll counter Received

So we would need at least 1 ghoul, 1 mummy, 2 Flesh Golems, & 2 Werewolves.

I wouldn't have a problem with giving double entries double chances - if the 1st entry was for the previous year (shown in bold, above). But that's up to you all. I'm just tryin' to herd cats here... Smile
