I am currently in the mood to paint my orc team and need to decide on the final line-up. I have scoured the advice from other players out there and have put together what I feel would be the most effective orc teams for tournament play. Which teams have people tried or played against that they found worked really well (or didn't for that matter!)

Option #1 (12 players)
4 Black orcs 3 Blitzers 1 Thrower 2 Gobbos 2 Line Orcs 3 Re-rolls 1 FF

Option #2 (Brute force)
4 Black orcs 4 Blitzers 3 Lineorcs 3 Re-rolls 3 FF

Option #3 (Well Rounded)
4 Black Orcs 4 Blitzers 1 Throwers 2 Linemen 3 Re-rolls FF 1

Option #4 (Sneaky Gobbos)
4 Black orcs 3 Blitzers 2 Gobbos 2 Linemen 1 Thrower 3 Re-rolls 1 FF

Option#5 (Orc-Finesse)
3 Black orcs 4 Blitzers 2 Throwers 2 Linemen 3 Re-rolls 2 FF

Option #6 (Troll)
4 Black Orcs 4 Blitzers 1 Troll 1 Goblin 1 Thrower 2 Re-rolls 2 FF

Thanks for the help!

I go with Option 6...scrap the Gobbo and a RR and go with a LineOrc...
1 RR...Commanche Style

Gobbo - 40K
Reroll - 60K
Total - 100K

1 Lineorc - 50K

Ummm.... I could afford two line orcs you know! No wonder you have trouble at tourneys KL! Your cheating yourself in the very team creation! Laughing

I would go with 6. Not sure how tournaments work but you would cripple most other teams in the first few games

Most tournaments reset all casualties after each round, that way no team is crippled after any one game. This prevents people from travelling vast distances only to realize after the first game that their chances of winning another game are shot after a bad first game.

That being said, you cannot always rely on crushing every opponent every game. Also, I sometimes have found the troll to be less than reliable! I have used option 6 for the two tourneys that I have taken orcs to, and I will let my dismal record speak for itself!

(Someone posted on TBB that #1 and #4 are the same.Wink)

I like option 1, but with 3 BOB's and 4 Blitzers.

Sounds like those sneaky gobbs tricked him. Smile

You know what I meant...try my line-up and go for a Leader. You already have enough bask skills/ability and can trade one skill in for a RR.

-Rob

EDIT:
Thrower
2 Line Orcs
4 Blitzers
4 BlackOrcs
1 Troll
With this roster you could also foul...or you can scrap one of the Line Orcs and take an Apoth and instead potentially save a Blitzer or BlackOrc.

I know! I realized shortly after posting it, and thought about saying something, but then thought i would leave it, and see how long it took others to notice!

I guess I can just add up the votes for 1 and 4 and count it as one.

Note - Ian "Doubleskulls Williams" claims that it is the Roster #1 that allowed him to have his massive NAF ranking with orcs.

Hmmmm......

Someone on TBB also had a point, that the orc thrower may not be a great choice because there is not a great catcher, and they are too slow to get into a cage - better to give sure hands to a blitzer.

I wouldn't normally give block to a thrower, and IMO 20k for the sure hands RR is a bargain. Pass isn't really that useful (maybe pass once or twice a tournament) but when you need it you really do need it Very Happy

Giving sure hands to a blitzer feels like a waste of a skill to me - but a necessary one if you don't take a thrower (too many strip ball war dancers).

The speed thing rarely bothers me. BOBs are MA4 so both blitzers & throwers can keep up with them. It might mean caging one square deeper and starting further back - but that is rarely much of an issue.

Ian,

Having done so well with orcs, have you posted your wisdom in any forum?

IIRC Absent & I had a long running discussion here about 18 months ago.

I don't actually believe there is a single best orc team anyway. First of all you don't know who you'll be drawn against - so running up against all flair blitzers are better value than BOBs. If you play against lots of Woodies then sure hands is a must. If lots of dwarves (either kind) then gobbos are a liability and against most bash teams you want to be AV9 everywhere.

There is another really big factor and thats the coach. Your team selection needs to reflect your style of play. I think I get good value from gobbos, but others may not. Also some will find the troll really powerful while I consider him a liability.

The final thing is tournament rules. Some tournaments allow Star players, most have different rules about skills and getting points. In some scoring systems slow teams are disadvantaged - so you can compensate a little by being better set up to score than grind. Stars are a whole different subject too.

I second Ians analysis. Laughing Your personal style of play is very important when chosing the lineup. I am personally a huge fan of the gobbo/troll combo, and the troll won more games for me than he caused losses due to his blocking.

To add to Ians list, the choice of skills should also be taken into account when chosing your lineup. If you, for example, want to include a dirty player, you should go for 12 players and have a lineorc doing the job.

Block on the thrower can be quite helpful in a woodelf/skaven environment, but this needs some flexibility during the tournament. Confused

Hmmm, maybe I should give my orcs another chance soon to see how much they can do. Wink
