Hey Guys, although I'm not a complete rookie (played 1 league so far, about 10 or so games) I'm still pretty new to this. I'm heading off to a tournament in about a months time and i'm going to take my chaos team (yes I know they're not the best/easiest but I'm hardly expecting to win anyway Very Happy ) It's 1.1mil starting team, players get healed after each game 6 games with a starting skill set which stays the same for each game. I have no idea on the likely ST/AG make up of the teams playing. Forgive me if in the post I state the obvious, its just I've posted this on a local forum as well for people that wont be as experienced as you guys.

The team is probably

6 Beastman 6 3 3 8 with horns

4 Chaos warriors 5 4 3 9

1 Minotaur 5 5 2 8 with Loner, Wild Animal, Horns, Frenzy, Mighty Blow and Thick Skull.

3 rerolls

0 FF
1 assistant coach

------------------------------------------------------------------

I wish I'd had another 10k so I could have gotten a cheerleader too but the above set up is maximum positionals. The other option would be to drop a reroll and add another beastman for 12 players....tempted.

For the skill sets you get to choose one of these options at the beginning of the tournament and you get the same skills for all 6 games.
No player is allowed more than one upgrade and you can pick a normal skill instead of a trait if you want to.

Set 1: 4 Skills, 2 traits
Set 2: 3 skills, 1 trait, 1 MV+1
Set 3: 5 x Skill, 1 AG+1
Set 4: 4 x Skill, 1 x ST+1

I went for Set 1 with my chaos.
Sets 2 and 4 have one less upgrade in them and an extra movement isn't really all that useful for me as I'd still only be up at 7 with a beastman and I've already got 4 strength 4 and a S5 block with a S4 blitz from a beastman so I'm not short on strength as it is.
For skill set 3. In a league if you offered me a +1AG beastman I'd snap your hand off....but that's because he can get other skills later. In this tournament where each player can only get one skill I think reroll skills are a lot more useful than +1 to the roll...esp as I dont come with any ball handling skills to start with (unlike other teams where this skill set would be awesome).

So that leaves me with 4 skills and 2 traits to assign to my players in skill set 1. There are a few ideas here.

Option A: Bashy
1) Beastman with surehands
2) CW Block
3) CW Block
4) CW Guard
5) Minotaur Stand Firm
6) Beastman Leader (Double)

I get to use two "doubles" skills but didn't end up useing them in this set up. Block on the CW to up the odds of getting knock downs, a S4 with guard should be quite hard for most teams to dislodge from being able to support. Leader for another reroll (so 4 in total). Surehands for the beastman over bighands/extra arms as although I could use a team reroll to pick up the ball if needed (and be doing it on a lower number) I think I may well need protection from strip ball. Stand Firm on the frenzied minotaur means I can push people off the pitch from 2 squares out and not have to worry about getting pushed off the field myself the next turn Very Happy (Block or Claw were the other considered alternatives here)

The problem I have with this skill set is that agile teams wont find it very hard to keep dodging away from me/through me.

Option B: Dodge Defence
1) Beastman surehands
2) Chaos Warrior tackle
3) Chaos warrior tackle
4) Beastman diving tackle (double)
5) Beastman diving tackle (double)
6) Minotaur Stand Firm

Still got the beastman with surehands (def surehands over the others in this set up as I dont have the extra leader reroll)
CW with tackle mean its a lot more risky trying to dodge away from them.
Beastman with diving tackle, one in each wide zone to make dodging through my line hard. Mino as before.

Option C: Pass Defence
1) Beastman Extra Arms
2) CW Disturbing Prescence
3) CW Disturbing Prescence
4) Beastman Pass Block
5) Beastman Leader
6) Minotaur Break tackle

The extra arms guy is because I'm likely to be needing to pick up the ball around other tackle zones after fumbles/missed catches due to disturbing prescence. (I chose it over Big Hands because it also helps me pick up the ball when its kicked to me). Using a reroll if needed (Leader)
Disturbing Prescence makes it a lot harder for the thrower to be near the los when he throws the ball meaning he has to atempt longer passes, pass block makes it either even harder for him or allows me to put tackle zone on the catcher. Break tackle for the mino is so he can blitz the ball carrier easier by "dodging" next to him, S6 on a blitz means I should still be on a 2 dice block even if he has 2 assists.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is how it works in my head anyway, being a rookie I'm probably dead wrong so if any of you would care to enlighten me please do so! :->

Thanks

Chaos are a tough team to play in tournaments. The lack of skills (comparative to other starting teams) combined with relatively high player and reroll cost makes life difficult.

Caveat - my LRB5 Chaos experience is pretty limited.

Of your skill options I'd only think about the "bashy" set and I'd modify that.

With your original lineup
Mino - Block
Chaos Warrior - Leader (4 rerolls Very Happy)
Chaos Warrior - Claw or Mighty Blow
Chaos Warrior - Claw or Mighty Blow
Chaos Warrior - Sure Hands or Claw or Mighty Blow
Beastman - Tackle

Mino with block is much much more reliable than without. The tackle beastman is reserved for marking/blitzing dodge players in your backfield. Then the Chaos Warriors do all the damage. I'd suggest one CW with Sure Hands to protect against Strip Ball War Dancers etc. You don't care who scores so it may as well always be the same CW. Claw/Mighty Blow should be split up. Orcs/Dwarves hate claw. Mighty Blow is better against Av8 or less - so most other teams.

Another option is to drop the mino take 2 extra beastmen and give one of them Dirty Player.

I'll take a totally opposite view from Doubleskulls, although I have not coached Chaos recently, but have had some success in the distant past.

The team is already as strong as it needs to be, with every player able to Blitz without assists at ST4 and every player except the Minotaur with AG3. This gives you amazing versatility in being able to pick any player for the Blitz and any player to handle the ball.

I would make up for the team's deficiencies with Extra Arms and possibly Big Hand or Sure Hands, at least 2 ball handlers anyway. However, you should get 3 players with Block. Leader might be useful since the team tends to go through rerolls. Possibly Guard on a Chaos Warrior to give you a nice solid front line.

With only 6 skill picks you can't afford to specialise against either passing teams or dodgy teams, so skip the Pass Block and Tackle versions. They'd be great for 2 games but useless for the others.

This skill set looks like the its for the waterbowl in Manchester? If it is, I will see you there. Very Happy

I would take

Leader on a warrior
Claw on the mino to make him a cas machine
Sure hands on a beastman
Block on a warrior
Claw on a warrior
Tackle on beastman to take of those GR/wardancers.

Good luck

Give the mino GUARD. Standing at the line of scrim with two beastmen, they have ST4.
One beastmen with disturbing presence would be fine in the defence agaist passing teams.
Give the CW Claw or the beastmen guard. Both is fine.

I try this at the Dungeonbowl in march. Hope it works
Good luck

For those pulling for Claw, keep in mind that in LRB5 it is completely wasted on AV7 teams and worse than MB against AV8 teams. I would rank it up there with Tackle as a skill you will get use out of only against certain teams (but still worth it to take at least one). Weigh that heavily when making decisions.

true, but it can stack with MB now, making arnour break on a 7. very handy vs orcs and dwarves

I'm not sure if the tourney has happened yet, but this is what I think.

Mino's aren't worth it on a new Chaos team, but they maybe worth it on a tournament team. Guard is the way to go though. Break Tackle on a mino is about the worse choice you could make, as you'd have to roll a 4+ first just to get the chance to dodge away (unless you're blitzing). Guard's great because even if you fail the Wild Animal roll you still get to use the guard.

Surehands is better than extra arms. Disturbing Presence is for metagaming. If you don't know your opponents, you need to go with the standard MB and Block. I love claws on my beastmen but high AV is big in my league.

Hey guys - the tournament was last weekend.
I went for mino, 4CW, 6BM and 3 rerolls with 1FF.
Mino had tentacle, this stopped people dodging away from him and was great in a few of the games. Block would have been a better choice to avoid the turnovers thuogh.
2CW had block
1CW had guard. This I felt was a bit of a waste and another block would have been better.
1 Beastman had surehands for the pickups (better than extra arms)
and another had leader for the 4th reroll.

It was a team set up for playing elves, about half the teams at the tournament were elves, however I only played one elf team (my last game).

Was a great tournament (waterbowl weekend) and I finished about as mid table as you could get with 2 losses, 2 draws and 2 wins lol.
Thouroughly reccommend it to anyone - although I cant say as much for chaos teams Razz
