The points were slanted towards the win, so any team that could win heavily (or even, say 4-3) is rated higher than one who grinds a 1-0. Still can't figure Darkson's 2-1-3 rating higher than my 2-2-2, unless he got 2 Sportsmanship points... ? Must say i'm amazed you played 2 CD's though as there were only three (including myself - who you didn't play!) that I could see.
My games were: HElf, Undead, Orc, Chaos, Orc, Undead - only used Tackle against Luthor really! |

Well he must have scored more tds than you and were your 2 losses 1 point ones. I know darkson had one 1 point loss cause i gave it to him ;]
Also I think there were at least 6 chaos dwarf teams, obv i got the highest placing of them. |

Turning the draws into wins really was the key. Maybe next time after some practice.
I agree Thadrin (beer on saturday has erased all real names from memory...) our little clump of players who kept grinding out tough draws against each other didn't exactly propel us up the rankings. But pleased to see I wasn't the only one to find those halflings tough. Brian clearly knew what he was doing with them, and three trees on the line is not something to enjoy too much!
One of the best parts of the weekend was meeting so many familiar names and I thought the friendliness on and off pitch was excellent.
Shame about the coin.... |

Brian deserved a MUCH better placing than he got. Very able coach. His "am I gonna run the ball or toss the halfling" tactics had me in fits on defence. |

Ian suggested during the Q&A that it be rated on net TDs, not gross TDs. That brings scorelines from Dwarven coaches and slower teams back into perspective. A 2-0 win will stand you in better stead than scraping in a 4-3 win.
I've seen a lot of posts around saying "I didn't do that badly and look where I came!" The fact of the matter is that there were 175 players all going for the cup. The bigger the tournament, the less useful it is just to keep from losing, you have to go for the big wins. Often that involves taking some risks and not just playing for the draw, but Nuffle favours the bold.
I think ranking players on net touchdowns would be more useful. It wouldn't disadvantage slower teams as much but would still reward the big wins. |

Touchdown differential is one of the main tiebreakers in our league's current tournament. It seems to be a good way to keep teams playing hard. |

I think the answer is having a base score for win-draw loss and bonus points for scoring/defence.
Win =5, draw=2, Loss=0
Hold opponent to less than 2 TDs=+2 points
Score at least 2 TDs=+2 Points
A blow out loss is 0. A tight loss will generally get you two. A draw 4 points, a tight win 7, and a real pounding 9. Either way, everyone is forced to be good at either offence or defence, while the guys who are good at both are on top, regardless of race played. A dwarf team winning 2-0 earn the same.
There's probably an easier way to express this, but I'm at work and feeling a cold coming on (one of you gits infected me dammit!)... |

Here's what we have been doing over here:
Win: 50
Draw: 30
Loss: 20
Win by two or more: +10
Lose by one: +10
Cause the most casualties: +10 |

The WPS uses a rather complex system that takes into accounts net TDs, casualties, clean sheets, etc. works out reasonably well and develops a fair bit of granularity.
I think the BB system would work alright with Net TDs. I'm generally against adding casualties to the mix because, IMO, it's just about how many times you roll 10+ on an injury roll.
I'd be interested to run a few alternate scoring systems over the BB results.... |

That's Woody's thing isn't it?
Problem there is we're hindered by not knowing how many of the two point gains were 1 TD losses and how many were ties.
(desperately trying to stay objective here ) |

I'll take that as a compliment
I think it was such a tough match because neither of us could put a dent in the other's team and so there were never any gaps to exploit.
Hope there'll be a rematch at some stage. |

This is the system I'm definitely going to use at GenCon Anthony if you can get the boys down here to defend the Canadian honor.
I think I've just about got the prizes lined up also and GenCon has confirmed that the tournament is a go.
And Marcus ... I don't really have a problem with give 10 points to the team with the most casualties. If you keep having Blow out wins (2+ TDs) and always lose the Cas war, you'll bring in 60 points a game to your oponent's 30. That's still a pretty larger win margin on points.

I'll hold you to that. Maybe next year I'll keep 3 players on the pitch |
