Can you tell me the name of the brush on varnish you use? Also, are you using GW paints or those swanky Vallejo ones - a mate of mine has just got some and they look really impressive so I might be getting some! |

Well, I use a standard GW Fine Detail Brush (sometimes a detail brush or standard brush for really large surfaces) and standard GW paints and I don't use varnish - that might sound stupid but in the past I've fucked up really good paint jobs by varnishing them and watching in horror as the varnish turned glossy, caught dust while drying or made highlights disappear... So the only thing I use varnish on nowadays is on stuff that's supposed to be really shiny like tongues.
I've never tried Vallejo myself but I heard it's good stuff, for me the nearest store that sells it is 45 kilometres away so I'll stick to my GW paints
Also, a lot of dutch expert painters use Rembrandt brushes size 000 for the fine detail work, I don't know if they're available outside of Holland though...? I'm gonna get me one as soon as I have some more money...

I bought an 00 brush from a hobby shop in town, and as well as being 33% cheaper than games workshop ones, it is also staggeringly better quality, so much so I will never be buying another GW brush again.
As for paints, I'm still on the GW stuff, but seeing as how Vallejo needs to be imported from Europe or the USA I am going to have to save up before I get any of them... |

I've stopped using spary on varnish as well, if anything I will use a bit of brush on matte for protection but that's it. |

I hate spray varnish cause you loose some of the quality of the paint job, but how do you protect your minis then ? The paint chips off when you manipulate them, that is not counting the swetty hands from stressful games !!! Seriously, is there an alternative or a matte spray ?

I use brush on matte varnish by Delta Ceramcoat. It's dirt cheap and comes in a bottle with a flip lid so you can squeeze out what you need. I also prevent chipping by smacking people upside the head when they drop my minis on the board
A good primer can also help prevent chipping, GW black undercoat works really well for me. Never use brush on primer. |

Why never use brush on primer? Just curious, I've never heard that before.
I always brush on my primer, it gets better coverage and has much less chance of obscuring detail if you make sure the consistancy is right. |

Didn't Grumbledook post (here or on TBB) about somewhere that sell it here in the UK? Might be mistaken. |

Brush on primer doesn't adhere to the surface as well as spray in my experience. Plus, if you are using the spray properly you won't obscure any detail like you will by brushing it on. |

Yes, I've used smelly primer in the past (gw's own brush on primer). It leaves tiny bubbles and the coverage is like some sort of very thin rubber coating which crumbles under the very first signs of stress. Black spraycoat works best to protect mini's without varnish, plus the fact that plastic models tend to be somewhat sturdier anyway. For metal models like my Black Orcs I just use Great Carefulness (and I smack anyone who knocks one over!) and having to repaint chips once in a while is compensated by the fact that the paint job isn't ruined by varnish.

And for the Dutchies amongst us, you can get the stuff in Tiel at Scale-Line games as well (Kwelkade 54 if I'm correct? I should'nt be doing this as a GW employee... ) |
