i know that if my opponent set ups too many players and i don't notice this till after the kickoff the extra player stays on untill the end of the drive or half whichever happens first, but is there anything else that happens???

What would make you think that the opponent should be allowed to field too many players just becazsue you did not notice? The onus should be on both players to count how many players are on the field and play fairly. If you notice after the kickoff, then whatthe people I play with have done is tor randomly determine the player who is to be removed. This could be a rookie lineman, or the star blitzer. It really helps to remind the coaches to be more careful when setting up.

If the TD was scored, or an important player is killed in the process of this illegal drive before you notice then it can get more complicated, and may require a restart.

the situation hasn't arisen yet thankfully - but it was more a case of what the rules actually say about.

i understand that there are a lot of house rules about this situation but what does the LRB and any FAQ's actually say

it's just that i'd like to have an official ruling before coming up with a house rule

The official ruling is that you should both check the number of players at the Kick Off, so it can never be an issue.
Therefore, as it's never an issue, the rulebook doesn't say what to do if it does happen, because according to the rules it can never happen.

That's why leagues/groups have houserules.

Hi all,

Happened once locally - noticed it during Turn 1 and I just let my opponent remove a player of his choice that hadn't moved yet off the pitch. Other option we thought of was to call illegal procedure every turn until he was down to 11 players, but I felt that a bit harsh... lol Smile

we remove one random player if this ever happens ~(sometines it does but only once) mor commonly i find people set up too fewer players and to resolve this we "kick2 the 11th man on as if you were placing and kicking the ball if he goes into the crowd TOUGH

Our house rule is that if a coach sets up too many players then their opponent can remove a player of their choice. It is pretty harsh, but it makes sure that people never make that mistake twice Smile
